Always Insist on Filing a Claim

I’d like to think that when people email me questions, I give them correct answers with good advice. In fact, I’d guess I do that almost all the time.

And when I don’t, it’s usually because the person writing to me didn’t present me with all the facts.

Here are a couple real-life examples. (I’ve changed the names to protect the anonymity of the readers involved.)

Bob wrote to tell me that his wife, Carol, who is two years older than he is, has been getting her own Social Security benefits since she was 62.

Bob just turned 66 and he was now applying for his own retirement. His benefits are significantly higher than what his wife is getting, so Bob thought Carol would be due more money on his account.

But when they talked to their local Social Security agent, they were told that because Carol took early retirement, she can’t get any spousal benefits on Bob’s record. They wrote to ask me if this was correct.

I responded by telling them that it was not necessarily true. The fact that she took her own benefits at 62 does NOT preclude Carol from getting extra spousal benefits on Bob’s account. Here is how they would figure out if Carol is due anything extra from her husband’s record. They would take her age 66 benefit rate and subtract that from one-half of Bob’s age 66 rate. I told them to do the math. This is a photo of a porcelain figurine that I inherited and believe may have some antique value. I have tried to contact some local appraisers but had no luck.

Marked on the bottom are the words “A Stitch In Time -- H N 2352 -- Copr 1965 -- Doulton & Co. Limited.”

There is also a lion above a crown and the words “Made in England -- Royal Doulton.”

The figurine is about 6 1/4 inches Royal Doulton was founded tall and in perin London, England, in 1815. fect condition.

Royal Doulton was founded in 1815 near London, England. It has produced dinnerware, giftware, Toby jugs and character jugs.

Your figurine, “A Stitch in Time,” was designed by master sculptor Mary Nicoll. It was introduced in 1965 and retired in 1981. In 1913, Doulton began issuing an “HN” design number to each new piece. The numbers were in chronological order until 1949. “HN” is the initials of Harry Nixon, who was responsible for painting the figurines.

Your figurine can be seen selling on the internet in the range of $50 to $100.

For years the chipping set up was taught with a series of mysterious and confusing elements. Point the feet way left. Put the ball behind the right foot. Lean most of the body weight left. All of which created an awkward looking system and typically low, screaming chips that ran off the green.

Modern tour players keep chipping quite simple. They aim slightly left or fairly square with their feet, usually a clubhead apart. No need to aim way left.
