In 1989 at Alfred University in Alfred, New York, a graduate student wanted to find out what would happen to a ball of Silly Putty dropped from a roof. Would it bounce or break? He dropped a 100-lb. ball from the top of the three-story McMahon Engineering Building while a crowd gathered to watch. The ball first bounced about eight feet into the air, but it shattered on the second bounce.

education to Clark, who enrolled the young man in the Saint Louis Academy boarding school, and provided many opportunities for him to travel the world. Jean- Baptiste died at the age of 61.

SACAJAWEA (from page 2) not a war party.

By Samantha Weaver

● It was humorist Jerome K. Jerome who made the following sage observation: “It is impossible to enjoy idling thoroughly unless one has plenty of work to do. There is no fun in doing nothing when you have nothing to do. Wasting time is merely an occupation then, and a most exhausting one. Idleness, like kisses, to be sweet must be stolen.” ● Though it is unconstitutional and therefore unenforceable, there is a law on the books in Tennessee which prohibits duelists, preachers and atheists from being elected to public office. ● According to most history books, the first shots of the Civil War were fired at Fort Sumter, S.C., in April of 1861, but that’s not entirely true. The first shots of the war between the North and the South actually were fired in January of that year in Pensacola, Fla., where a garrison of Union troops was stationed at Fort Barrancus. A contingent of Florida and Alabama troops marched on the fort with the intent to throw out the Yankees in their midst. However, the Southerners’ dedication to the cause was somewhat lacking; as soon as the Union soldiers fired at them, they beat a hasty retreat. ● Those who study such things say that the average lightning bolt has a temperature of approximately 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit. For comparison, the sun’s average temperature is only 10,000 F. ● If you’ve ever been told to shut your pie-hole, you might have wondered where the expression came from. The term was first used in 1983, in the film version of Stephen King’s horror novel “Christine.” *** Thought for the Day: “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It may be necessary from time to time to give a stupid or misinformed beholder a black eye.” -- Jim Henson (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

During World War II, numerous Japanese invasions of rubber-producing countries in the Far East vastly reduced the availability of rubber in the U.S. In the 1940s, the U.S. War Production Board asked the General Electric Corporation for help in developing a cheap substitute for rubber so that production of goods such as boots and tires could continue. G.E. enlisted the services of chemist James Wright, who created an unexpected and curious compound after accidentally dropping some boric acid into silicone oil in 1943. • Wright discovered that the new compound had some rather bizarre properties. It stretched further than rubber, rebounded higher than rubber, appeared impervious to mold and decay, and could withstand extreme temperatures. The only problem was that scientists couldn’t find any real use for the stuff. In 1945, G.E. mailed samples to scientists all over the world, asking for their help in finding a useful purpose for it. • In 1949, the putty reached the owner of a toy store, Ruth Fallgatter. She contacted Peter Hodgson, a marketing consultant, and the two decided to market the bouncing putty by selling it in her store in a clear case. But sales were only moderate, so Fallgatter decided not to pursue it any further. But Hodgson saw its potential.

going to make a sequel to “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.” Is that still happening? If so, when can I see it? --Freddie F., via e-mail

A:

Mark your calendar, Freddie, because “Anchorman: The Legend Continues” will hit theaters on Dec. 20, 2013. This go ‘round will star the Channel 4 news team from the original movie, and will add funny lady Kristen Wiig in a supporting role. ***

Q:

I absolutely love “The Middle” and would like to know more about the talented actress who plays the daughter on the show. -- Randy W., via e-mail

A: Twen-

ty-one-year-old Eden Sher plays the middle child, Sue Heck, on the hilarious Fox comedy. Eden told me she’s known since she was a little girl that she wanted to be an actress: “It always felt natural, and I was just always performing. And then when I was 8 or 9 is when I finally convinced Eden Sher my mom to let me try it professionally. I would just see TV shows, and I was like, ‘I can do that! I can do that better! Please let me try.’ Then when I was, like, 15, I thought, ‘OK, this is not just something that I love to do, but I think I can actually make money doing this.’” And what makes it even better is that her onset family actually feels like family. Eden told me: “I love them. Like when we’re on hiatus, we still see each other. I always hang out with Charlie (McDermott), and I have lunch with Neil (Flynn). And I see Patty (Heaton) a lot. I don’t see Atticus (Shaffer) outside the set as much, but he doesn’t live in L.A. When we’re all working together, there aren’t words to express the immense feeling of gratitude that I feel on a daily basis. You just don’t get a work environment where you truly enjoy every person you work with.” ***

Q: Did Claire Danes have her baby yet? -- Genie Fiesta Flan Custard Pie R., Boulder, Colo. I can’t think of a better time of the year to A: Claire and hubby Hugh Dancy welcomed a health baby boy, Cyrus Michael Christopher Dancy, on Dec. 17. Congrats to the first-time parents on their little miracle!

When it comes to getting our dogs to come to us, some of us have some pretty funny ideas. Over the years, I’ve worked with a multitude of dog owners who are bewildered that their rendition of “come” -ranging from harsh toWe downright has remove the scoop, terrifying disinfect--and yo opposite effect of driving theirpoop dogsweekly away. for only $9.75 Listening to these folks try to get their dogs to come to them reminds me of the rhyme from “101 Dalmatians”: Cruella De Vil, Cruella De Vil. If she doesn’t scare you, no evil thing will... But what often happens next borders on the absurd. Frustrated by their failed efforts to get their own dog to come anywhere near them, they go after him. That’s right -- the chase is on! Through the house, over the couch, ‘round and ‘round the coffee table and then the mad dash under the bed where the dog, exhausted, collapses just out of reach. There are a couple of things going on here that you might not realize and you probably don’t want. 1) Your dog is afraid to come to you because of the tone of voice you’re using. 2) Your dog then learns that if he doesn’t come to you, you’ll chase him, and what dog doesn’t love a good game of chase? There are a few easy changes you can make to get out of this cycle, should this scene sound a little too familiar. First, pay attention to the tone you use whenever you say your dog’s name. Use a happy, positive, loving tone of voice every time you utter his blessed name. Second, it’s time to issue the “come” command in the manner most likely to yield results. Some trainers use the word “come.” Some prefer the word “here.” Still others prefer the German words “Hier” or “Komm,” which sound pretty much the same as their English equivalents. What matters isn’t so much the word, but the tone. For the most part, you’ll want to use a bright tone of voice, one that commands attention in a positive way. When practicing the “come” command initially, you’ll want to use a long lead. The goal is to get your dog to come to you at the first issuance of the command. When you’re starting out, you’ll need the help of the lead to get that to happen. It’s counterproductive to say “come” over and over. The dog gets the idea that he doesn’t need to respond to the CASEY’S CORNER: Turn to page 10

YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margenau

Some Wives Don’t Need Their Own Social Security

Tidbits of Coachella Valley

Page 11

when a couple is still married, the law assumes the husband is still supporting the wife (and thus, she doesn’t need his Social Security until he is drawing it himself). But when a couple is divorced, the law can’t make that assumption. So it allows a divorced woman to get benefits even if her ex isn’t getting them. They threw in that two-year rule because they don’t want a woman to divorce a husband who isn’t yet getting benefits just to claim benefits on his record. But in your case, your husband (soon to be exhusband) is already getting Social Security benefits. And we know you are not divorcing him just to get your hands on his Social Security. You’re dumping him because he is a philandering fool!

The Social Security Administration and the Railroad Retirement Board work closely together because many people have a mix of Social Security covered work and Railroad Retirement covered work. In fact, for those folks who have worked for a railroad for 10 years or more, the Railroad Retirement Board handles both their Railroad Retirement claim and their Social Security claim, including the Social Security claims of their spouses.

If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has the answer. Contact him at thomas.margenau@ comcast.net. To find out more about Tom Margenau and to read past columns and see features from other Creators Syndicate writers and cartoonists, visit the Creators Syndicate website at www.creators.com.

I am about to turn 62. My husband is 68 and already getting Social Security. We have been married for almost 40 years. But now we are getting divorced. (He’s found a younger woman!) I never worked outside the home because my husband wanted me to be a full-time housewife. So I was counting on getting his Social Security. I was reading Social Security rules online, and they say I have to be divorced for at least two years before I can get my ex-husband’s Social Security. Does that mean I won’t get any of his Social Security until I am 64?

A: No. You will be due divorced wife’s benefits

as soon as you reach age 62. That two-year rule applies only if you are trying to get benefits from an exhusband who is not yet getting Social Security, but who is old enough for benefits. Let me explain. Normally, a wife cannot draw benefits from her For more teasers log he on to husband’s Social Security record until is getting benefits himself. But thewww.TriviaGuy.com rules allow a divorced wife to claim benefits from her ex even if he isn’t yet getting benefits, as long as he is old enough to claim those benefits (meaning he is at least 62 years old). ANSWER: Let’s start with a couple of mistakes made by most people with acne. Don’t scrub your face or any place where acne has broken out. Scrubbing causes irritation and worsens acne. Use a mild soap like Dove when washing. Don’t squeeze pimples, whiteheads or blackheads. You force bacteria into adjacent skin. Acne develops because of clogged pores through which hairs grow and through which sebaceous (oil) glands empty their oil onto the skin. The first signs of trouble are whiteheads or blackheads. They indicate that the pore is plugged. Deep in the pore, down from the blockage, the oil glands continue to secrete oil and greatly distend the pore, which can rupture. Bacteria thrive on the oil. At this point, a pimple is born. Acne control involves unplugging the pore, eliminating the bacteria and putting the brakes on oil production. The oil production is in high gear because of the increase of male hormones at this time in life. Benzoyl peroxide unplugs pores. Brand names include Clearasil and AcneClear, both available without prescription, as are many other brands. From this point on, effective medicines require a prescription. The first choice is retinoids -- Renova cream and Retin-A. They’re often used on alternating days with benzoyl peroxide. The next step up is antibiotics. In creams and lotions, they aren’t absorbed very much. Clindamycin and erythromycin are two such products. If no progress comes from skin-applied antibiotics, then oral antibiotics are the next step. Tetracycline, doxycycline and minocycline are examples. Your parents should reconsider their ban on their use. Even if they sensitize you to sunlight, simply stay out of sunlight when using them. They worked for you. I haven’t listed all acne medicines. Bad acne, like yours, calls for treatment by the family doctor or a dermatologist. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am writing on behalf of several neighbors who have started soaking golden raisins in gin. Each of them takes nine such raisins a day. They claim this was a method shown on television to remedy arthritis. Have you ever heard of this? Our cu-

Appealing a Denied Medicare Claim Every quarter you’ll receive a Medicare statement. It’s important that you inspect this form -- going over every item -- and look for mistakes. Kaiser Health News has issued a report showing how to handle any mistakes you find: If a claim is denied, you’ll want to take steps to appeal. Hold on to your quarterly statement and circle the items in question. If you have a computer, go to the Medicare site (www.medicare.gov) and click on Claims & Appeals. You’ll get a list of instructions. Down the page at Get Medicare Forms, you’ll find the forms you need for either a claim or an appeal. You also can file a claim online at the above link. If your claim is denied, be sure to appeal within 120 days. If you’re denied again, file again, asking for a second appeal. If denied, for your next appeal include a letter describing what the payment was for. Include a copy of the previous denials of your claim. Your next appeal will be to ask for a hearing before an administrative law judge. This likely will be a conference call between you, your doctor and the judge. Only 2 percent of errors are ever challenged when it comes to denied claims. Those who are denied a claim often give up. It takes energy and perseverance to have the corrections made, but it’s to your benefit, even if it takes a second or third try. It’s on the third try that you’ll have the most success, so don’t give up if you know you’re right. For free help in filing appeals, contact your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIPS) office. Find them by calling your local county office on aging. toy that was given to me for my birthday in the early 1950s. It has the original two cars and box. The frame is decorated with scenes of children playing arcade games. On the side of the roller coaster, there is a shield with the words: “J. Chein -- Made in U.S.A.” It is in excellent condition and the colors are bright. What can you tell me about my toy?

A:

J. Chein & Co. was located in Burlington, N.J., from 1900 to 1970. They were one of the leading manufacturers of tin windups, pull toys, banks and friction toys. The roller coaster was also available in a ski ride version. Your tin lithograph toy is extremely collectible and would probably sell in the range of $300 to $400. * * *

worse than you can imagine. A few years ago, a friend of a friend invited me to a pickup game at the local college. He warned me in advance that it was pretty competitive. When I got to the gym, I looked the part in my vintage Jordan’s and Under Armour ... that is, looked the part of a giant tool who couldn’t even get a shot off because he was being guarded by a former college player who seemed a bit too tenacious for a pickup game. To make things worse, they had me playing the point. I could pass the ball pretty well, but my lack of on-court experience showed when I tried to run a fast break and threw up an alley-oop from midcourt. It was a real showstopper in that everyone stopped playing and made faces indicating utter befuddlement. “Was that a shot?” one guy asked. “A buzzer-beater?” “No,” I shot back (rhetorically ... not with a basketball). “I was setting you up for the dunk.” After the laughter subsided, the guy I was passing to took the opportunity to provide me with a teaching moment. “Look, dude ... I’m 50 years old,” he said. Then he pointed to his knee brace. It resembled scaffolding. You could get a few masons and build the foundation to a skyscraper around his knee. “I’ve got 10 pounds of steel wrapped around my knee.” “Yeah, and we don’t really dunk, like, ever,” another helpful person. “We’re kind of happy when we find someone who can go to their left. Which you can’t.” Real friendly guys. Which brings me to my original point. If you’re a lefty, you need to play baseball or tennis ... baseball in particular. I cannot think of any institution that employs, per capita, more lefties than the game of baseball (at least outside of the Massachusetts state Senate). Even crappy lefties put together 10-season, journeyman careers. That’s job security. Who’s looking out for ya, kid? Dad, that’s who. Now stop throwing off your back right foot, and we’ll work on your slider after Mickey Mouse. It’s time to step it up. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in Kansas City. ball, actually narrow your stance. It’s much more difficult to sway with a narrow stance and you get a better feel for where the natural bottom of the arc of your swing is. This will keep you from bottoming out before striking the ball because your swing arc will be moved forward a bit. With more balance, stability, and more of a descending swing you will have more control in your chip shots.
