LONG LITTLE DOGGIE

(from page one)

most widely held story of the funny little “hot dogs” origins is that they were developed in Germany in the 18th and 19th centuries. They were bred to be dogs with excellent digging skills with the ability to chase rabbits, foxes and even be a challenging foe to more vicious animals such as boars and badgers. • Dachshunds have been always been associated with Germany. In fact, during World War II the people of both England and the United States viewed the breed with considerable disdain, associating them with Adolph Hitler and the Nazi regime. Americans began calling the dogs “liberty pups,” and political cartoonists drew unflattering pictures of dachshunds just to insult the Germans.

A few facts about

BADGERS Known for being both incredibly strong for their size and the world’s fastest diggers, badgers are small but fierce animals. • Badgers are nocturnal omnivores, meaning they are primarily active at night and eat both plants and animals. They are known to eat insects, grubs, earthworms, birds, mice, squirrels, chipmunks, reptiles, amphibians, porcupines, honey, roots, snakes and fruit. After badgers eat rotten fruit, they appear to be intoxicated.

Tidbits of Coachella Valley

like ferrets, they are long and low. Ferret badgers live in Southeast Asia and are known for occasionally sleeping in trees. The weight of the little creatures in this badger species ranges between 2 and 6 pounds. • One food that all badgers love is earthworms, and they can consume more than 200 of them in one day. Badgers can get all of the hydration they need from an exclusive diet of earthworms due to the high percentage of water found in the worm’s body. • Badgers, even though fairly small, can run at almost 20 miles per hour, which helps them escape dangerous situations when necessary. However, they are more known for standing their ground to fight against any intruder. • Adult badgers have few natural enemies,

Page 5

since their fierocity alone is enough to drive predators away. They have even been known to fight bears and wolves many times their size. Once a predator has experienced the extreme fierocity of an angry badger it is not likely to try bothering it again! • Wisconsin is known as the “Badger State.” The nickname originally referred to lead miners at the Galena lead mines in Illinois back in the 1830s. These mines were close to the Wisconsin and Iowa borders. The Wisconsin miners would live in temporary caves cut into the hillsides. Their caves were referred to as badger dens, and thus, they were nicknamed badgers. The name stuck, and in 1957 the badger was adopted as the official state mascot. ■

• There are seven species of badgers that are found on four continents: North America, Asia, Africa and Europe. Most species of badger weigh between17-26 pounds. • Badgers have a shovel-shaped head, sharp, strong claws and low-slung bodies. They have short legs, short necks and short bushy tails. Most species are black or gray and have white stripes down their faces and sides. • The burrows that badgers dig for their shelter, called setts, are usually in sandy, porous soil. They dig extensive tunnel systems to their setts. An interesting fact about badgers is that they really get vigorous with their digging -using all four feet! They can throw dirt faster than any human with a shovel. • Badgers have poor eyesight but excellent senses of hearing and smell. In fact, it is believed that the badger’s sense of smell is 700-800 times greater than humans! They even recognize each other by their individual smell. • The name “badger” is likely derived from the French word bêcheur, which means digger, or possibly from the word badge, as a reference to the white mark badgers have on their foreheads. In the English language the word “badger” has a meaning as a verb as well as a noun. To “badger” someone is “to pester or relentlessly attempt to persecute them.” • Although badgers can mate at any time of year, an interesting and unusual mating fact is that they have delayed implantation. The female can choose when she wants her baby to start developing! This allows the mother to choose the time she feels her offspring has the best chance for survival. • Ferret badgers are the smallest species, and

Bob Barker wasn’t there to celebrate. Was he not invited, or was he unable to attend? I can tell you his presence was definitely missed! -- Ada E. in Arkansas

A:

Q: I saw a video on CMT by Shooter Jennings, and he sounds and looks so familiar. Is he related to the late Waylon Jennings? -- Travis R., via e-mail

A:

Shooter is the country-music star’s son with wife (and fellow country singer) Jessi Colter. Shooter grew up surrounded by legends: Waylon, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson. You can catch Shooter beginning Sunday, Oct. 7, at 8 p.m. EDT on Ovation, where he participates in the six-part documentary series, “Johnny Cash: Song by Song,” sharing his recollections of the Man in Black. Shooter Jennings Shooter shared some memories of Cash with me when we spoke recently: “One of the first things I think that has not been documented very well about Johnny Cash is how funny and goofy and charming he was. He wasn’t a brooding, dark, stoic character. He’d play jokes on people and do things to make little kids laugh. He was like a big kid. My dad was like that too. That’s the way they were together too.” If you want to read more about Shooter, Waylon and Cash, as well as how Shooter has carved his own niche in the country-music world, check out our interview at celebrityextraonline.com. ***

Bob Barker, the original emcee for the long-running game show, was not invited to the birthday bash, which came as a shock to many longtime viewers, and to the man himself. Bob told “TV Guide Magazine”: “I don’t know why I wasn’t asked to take part in some way. But I do know I am ashamed of the show and surprised at their complete disregard for the welfare of animals. (When I was there,) we never did anything that condoned animal cruelty. Apparently, things have changed.” ***

Velvety Chicken And Rice Soup I’ve always been partial to a hearty bowl of soup. Maybe it’s because of my Eastern European heritage. Maybe it’s because Mom stirred up some of the best pots of soup ever, even when she didn’t have an abundance of ingredients to choose from. Maybe it’s because it’s just comforting and cozy. Whatever the reason, I hope you enjoy!

Q:

What does Patrick Wilson have planned since CBS’s “A Gifted Man” was canceled? -- Nicki C., via e-mail

A:

Patrick’s next role is opposite Alec Baldwin in the big-screen thriller “Caught Stealing.” Alec plays a sadistic cop to Patrick’s down-on-hisluck former hot shot who gets caught up in a web of very bad things. The movie is based on a book of the same name by Charlie Huston, which is the first installment of the “Hank Thompson Trilogy.”

Everyday CHEAPSKATE

®

by Mary Hunt

How to Recover the Length of Shrunken Jeans Everyday CHEAPSKATE

If you’ve ever experienced the heartbreak ® of shrinking your favorite pair of jeans to a length that would make them perfect to wear in a flood, by Mary Hunt you’re going to be particularly fond of today’s first great reader tip. And like me, you’re probably going to wonder, “Why didn’t I think of that!” NO MORE HIGH-WATERS. While doing the laundry one day, I got to thinking that if cotton shrinks it, probably stretches, too. I decided to experiment on my kids’ jeans, thinking that if I could make the legs longer we could squeak out more wear. After washing, I folded a pair of wet jeans in half lengthwise and laid them on a beach towel on the floor. Then I stood on the jeans and grabbed the hem of one of the legs. I carefully, but forcefully, began to pull up. I could feel the fabric stretching compared to the other leg. I flipped the pants over and did the same thing to the other leg. When I was done stretching the legs, I hung them up to dry. After they were dry, I tossed them in the dryer for a couple of minutes to take away the stiffness. Jeans come out a couple of inches longer with this method than if I simply toss them in the dryer. -- Sandy, Minnesota SHAPED EGGS. When I’m making eggs for my grandkids, I pour the egg into a metal cookie cutter that I’ve spritzed with Pam and put on the hot frying pan. The egg cooks in the shape of the cookie cutter, and the grandkids love it! -- Margie, New York BABY POWDER FOR SPOTS. Baby powder is a great clothing saver. I use it to remove

oily spots from silk and cotton sweaters. I cover the spot with baby powder and let sit overnight. In the morning, I brush off the powder with a towel. I have had several colorful silk suits last for years, thanks to this trick. And I always pack it when I travel. -- Darcy, email CAP THE BOWLS. When I stack bowls or kitchen equipment that I rarely use, they end up getting dusty before I use them again. To prevent this from happening, I take a shower cap and stretch it over the top of the items. The cap keeps the dust out. -- Christy, Oregon HERB CUTTER. When chopping herbs like basil, cilantro or parsley, I use a pizza cutter instead of a knife. It cuts a large amount of herbs quickly. -- Sharon, Idaho FRYING THE BEANS. Like Mary, I roast my own coffee beans. But I’m not ready to invest in a coffee roaster, and I don’t have an air popcorn popper. So, I roast my beans on the stove, in a cast iron frying pan (with the windows open and lots of ventilation!). Not only is the coffee delicious, but the Ad Proof: frying pan loves it. The oils in the beans give my pan a beautiful, seasoned finish that it had John Cuddihysmooth, - Flags “A” Flying never had before. -- Rosie, Arizona

March to a Million Money is tight everywhere, but there is one group that truly deserves any holiday donations you’ll make this year. I want to get first dibs on at least 15 of the dollars you may have earmarked for charity. Operation Gratitude (www.operationgratitude.com) recently reached a milestone of 800,000 packages sent to service members stationed far away. Started by Carolyn Blashek at her diningroom table in 2003, OpGrat’s efforts have been constant, ever expanding and heartfelt. Here are the stats since 2003:

--6.4 million pounds of donated product --$8 million in shipping expenses --40 million items --$80 million worth of product shipped

The number and type of corporate donations are proof positive that OpGrat is an organizaCorrections due by: 5 pm, Wed., 1/26/11 tion worth getting behind. That 800,000th package was a special one that contained a week’s vacation, a web cam, a DVD player, a digital camera -- and the keys to a custom-built American Chopper motorcycle. Of course not all of the 100,000 packages sent every year contain the keys to a vehicle, but COPYRIGHT 2012 CREATORS.COM each one, addressed individually to a service member by name, is packed with at least $125 worth of excellent products, as well as individually written let& ters and cards. new dog, hold still and present your hand palm up for the dog to sniff. Recently, I had a vet tech breeze up to my dog, Ruby, and lower her hand down over Ruby’s head. Ruby jumped up and “air bit” at the vet tech’s hand. “Also, when I walk Ruby, people encourage their kids to come up and pet her whether or not I say it’s OK, including toddlers who want to grab her to steady themselves. I was taught to ask permission to approach someone’s dog. What is wrong with people?”

My advice: Don’t reach out to pet a strange dog, even with the owner’s permission. Dog owners do not always provide the most accurate assessment of their dog’s temperament. This is sometimes a byproduct of denial, but by and large, it’s ignorance. A dog owner who does not grasp the importance of socialization won’t understand that Fido’s good manners and sweet disposition at home aren’t guaranteed to hold true out on the streets with the We scoop, disinfect and remove y rest of us. When a stranger asks for permission to poop weekly for only $9.7 pet Fido, his owner might give the go-ahead -- not realizing Fido’s inner Cujo hasn’t been tamed when it comes to strangers. And the strangest of the strangers to a pooch? Children. Children are awkward. They walk funny, fall over, flail their arms, shriek, clap, and their heads wobble all over the place. To a dog that hasn’t been raised around children, any of this may feel threatening. I have four fantastic dogs at home. One of them has never been around children, and one of them gets nervous around quick, jerky movements. When my small nephew visits, I keep those dogs away from him. This is not about aggression; it’s about fear. And it’s the kind of “better safe than sorry” judgment call responsible dog owners should be equipped to make. If you must pet a strange dog, make a knuckle sandwich. This will protect your fingers. And don’t approach head-on, arm-extended. For many people, a rolled-up newspaper remains the weapon of choice in their futile attempts to correct canine missteps. To a dog, your arm looks suspiciously similar to that rolled-up paper. only be paid to a widow or widower. And that’s where the one-time death benefit has been ever since. It’s essentially a meaningless payment. BUT, it is an incredibly popular little benefit. Anytime a member of Congress even thinks of introducing a bill to eliminate the token payment, he or she is immediately flooded with letters from senior citizen groups, and the bill is quickly withdrawn!

Q. A.

Q.

I am a 54-year-old widow. My husband died a couple years ago. My children are all grown. I am having a hard time making ends meet, and so I am ver y puzzled as to why I can’t get widow’s benefits now. Why do only older women get widow’s benefits? I have just as many bills and problems as they do. What could possibly be the justification for denying me my husband’s benefits just because I’m not yet a senior citizen?

A.

The law generally says a woman can get widow’s benefits beginning at age 60. When Congress wrote that law, which by the way was back in 1935, they assumed that a woman under the age of 60 ought to be able to work and support herself. I know my mother was a widow at the age of 50 and did just that -- she worked until she was 65 years old. But Congress recognized a couple of situations in which a widow under 60 might not be able to work -- if she was disabled or if she had minor kids. So that’s why they provided two exceptions to the age 60 law. They said a widow can get benefits as early as the age of 50 if she is severely disabled. And they said a woman with minor children in her care ought to be able to get widow’s benefits at any age. Those same exceptions still apply today. But you are not disabled. And you don’t have little kids at home. I know the job market can be tough, but again, the law assumes you should be able to support yourself at least until you reach age 60. * * *

Q.

My husband died four months ago. They did switch me from the wife’s benefit I was getting to widow’s benefits. But I never received the $255 death benefit. For a month or so after he died, it seemed they were having trouble figuring out my correct widow’s payment. I believe it was a higher rate for a month or so, but for the past couple months, it has leveled off to what my husband was getting when he died. I don’t remember ever applying for that burial benefit. Should I contact someone at the Social Security office about this? I hope you don’t think my question is too naive. I spent my entire adult life as a wife and homemaker, and my husband handled all the finances, so I really don’t understand how Social Security works.

A.

Obviously, I don’t know all the facts about your case. So you should talk to someone at your Social Security office to verify this. But here is what I think happened. You said you were getting Social Security checks as a wife on your husband’s record before he died. In those kinds of situations, the Social Security office just automatically switches you from wife’s benefits to widow’s benefits as soon as they learn of your husband’s death (which they probably did by checking the computer records of the state or county bureau of vital statistics). As part of that process, they also automatiFor more teasers log on to www.TriviaGuy.com

cally send you the $255 death benefit. It isn’t necessarily a separate check. You said that you received a higher rate before your benefits leveled off. So I’m pretty sure that $255 one-time death payment was just included along with your first widow’s payment. Again, you can check with your Social Security office to make sure. To be frank, they didn’t expect you to bury your husband for $255. As I’ve explained before in this column, that little token death payment was never meant to be a “burial benefit.” It started its life as a one-time payment about 75 years ago, in the very earliest days of the Social Security program. At that time, there were many people who died without having accrued sufficient work credits, sometimes called “quarters of coverage,” for their families to qualify for any survivor’s benefits. Social Security planners didn’t want these people to go away empty handed, so family members of the deceased would get a little token reimbursement from the government. It was initially set at three and onehalf percent of the Social Security taxes the deceased had paid into the program. As always happens with government programs, people who weren’t getting what came to be mistakenly known as the “burial benefit” complained that they were being cheated. These would be the family members of someone who died “fully insured,” meaning they were widows and/or minor children who already qualified for monthly benefits. As I explained above, the one-time death benefit was meant to be a compensation for folks whose loved one died before paying sufficient taxes into the system. But Congress knuckled under the pressure and decided to pay a one-time death benefit (NOT a “burial benefit”) in almost all cases. That payment was initially set at six times the deceased’s monthly retirement rate. In 1954, the law was amended to limit the payment to “six times the monthly retirement rate but not more than $255.” In 1973, they changed the wording of the law to simply say the payment would be a flat $255. Finally, in 1983 they amended the law to say the death benefit could

Many of their pieces were decorated with portraits of monks, Native Americans, images of flowers and also fraternal order related pieces. The meaning of the word “IOGA” remains a mystery and often was included with their marks in the early 1900s. Your vase is circa 1905 and can be seen selling in the range of $225 to $275.

This is a photo of an ornate porcelain candleholder that is decorated with a cherub surrounded by pink flowers and green and gold vines. He is holding an egg in one hand. The overall height is 10 inches. The word “Germany” is marked on the bottom along with blue double crossed lines. I purchased it at a house sale approximately 30 years ago, and, if I remember correctly, I paid $8. It is in mint condition. I always thought it was pretty, and now I wonder if it is of any value.

A:

Your figural candleholder is an example of Meissen-style porcelain. The crossed lines mark is similar to those used by Royal Porcelain Manufactory in Meissen, Germany. A number of manufacturers in Germany, England and France used a variation of the mark. Some of the major German factories that copied the mark are Plaue Porcelain Manufactory, Schierholz and Son Porcelain Factory, Kalk Porcelain Factory, Sitzendorf Porcelain Factory and Carl Thieme Porcelain Factory. Your candleholder was made in the early 1900s and would probably be worth $75 to $125.

The cry from the stands is always for “DEFENSE! DE-FENSE!” I can’t ever recall a time I’ve heard the fans chant “OFFENSE! OFFENSE!” But the writing was on the wall when the NFL instituted the “in the grasp” rule for quarterbacks in 1991. The rash of concussions, particularly among high-profile quarterbacks like Steve Young and Troy Aikman, made it a ... well, no brainer. And as players became bigger and stronger each year, injuries and concussions grew in lock step. This has led to great concern among players and parents, who are increasingly keeping their kids off the Pop Warner fields. The game has progressed since the early 1900s, when people used to actually die due to trampling during a “flying wedge” play (since outlawed). Talk about points? The Chicago Bears crushed the Washington Redskins in the 1940 championship, 73-0. The Bears rushed for 382 yards and their starting quarterback only attempted 4 passes the entire game. Well that day is done. Forty is the new 20 folks, and if you ask me, we’re all the richer for it. This Meissen-style porcelain candleholder was made in Germany in the early 1900s.

Q:

I have enclosed the mark that is on the bottom of a china vase that I have. The vase is decorated with a portrait of a young woman and the background shades from tan to light brown. It stands about 12 inches tall and has brown handles and rim. It has been handed down in my family from my great-grandmother to me. I know nothing about its histor y or value. What can you tell me?

The Natural Laws of Golf Your straightest iron shot of the day will be exactly one club short. If you seem to be hitting your shots straight on the driving range, it’s probably because you’re not aiming at anything. A ball you can see in the rough from 50 yards away is not yours.

LONG LITTLE DOGGIE (from page page 3) Blackie who became a hero when he alerted Wayne’s wife during a late night house fire in 1958 by barking continuously until she awakened from a deep sleep. • The first dachshund in England was owned by Queen Victoria in 1839. Her husband, German Prince Albert, gave her the dog as a gift and soon brought more dachshund puppies into the country. The breed quickly gained popularity and was recognized by the English Kennel Club in 1877.

TEE UP

• Gergweis, Germany, the “Dachshund Capital of the World,” once had so many dachshunds that they outnumbered people two to one. They were successfully used as a tourist attraction! • There are some exciting “wiener dog” events around the world that draw crowds for fun and laughter as the popular little dogs entertain. Even when dachshunds don’t intend to entertain, they are entertaining! • The 20th Annual Weiner Walk and Dachshund Picnic was held at Winskill Park in Tsawwassen, British Columbia in August. Some years have seen as many as 300 dog lovers and their canines. The event is put on by the Western Dachshund Club and includes walks around the park, a costume parade and contest, contests for best trick, longest dog, oldest dog and more. As could be expected, there are drinks and snacks for sale including, of course, hot dogs! ■

Shoulders are the key

2 - No. 46

“Yikes! Look at this crowd. l’d bet the only person who isn’t out here today is Elvis himself!”

When you are looking to produce a nice, high bunker shot the key is to keep the face of the club facing upward for as long as possible. You will feel like the club face is open, but it’s not. This prevents the club face from closing and digging into the sand, which causes those low screamers. You achieve this by turning your shoulders. Many amateurs dig down into the sand and don’t turn their shoulders into the followthrough. Turn your shoulders all the way to your followthrough, keeping your hands high in front of your chest, and your chest and front of your body, facing the target. This will achieve a higher, softer bunker shot and prevent those low screamers.

PHOBIAS (continued): • Some phobias relate to what’s up above, such as the sun (heliophobia), the clouds (nephophobia), the moon (selenophobia), and the stars (siderophobia). Some folks are just afraid of looking up – they are called anablephobes. • Not all phobias seem that abnormal or uncommon. Lots of people might have a fear of death, known as necrophobia. But those with an extreme form might be terrified of being buried alive. A nosocomephobe has a fear of hospitals, a verminophobe is afraid of germs, and a hydrophobe has an irrational fear of water. • Individuals suffering from extreme agoraphobia rarely leave their homes, due to their fear of public or open spaces and the inescapable situations that may occur there. Only home is safe. • Some phobias can be a learned behavior that comes from listening to others describe a traumatic event. An individual in one’s life can trigger a phobia, such as peladophobia, the fear of bald people. Those with nosto-phobia, a fear of returning home, may be able to contribute their panic to a specific incident. • People who are afraid of looking into mirrors have cataptrophobia, while those with cyberphobia have a fear of working with computers. A person with an anxiety about memories is a mnemophobe. • Don’t confuse levophobia, the fear of objects to a person’s left, with dextrophobia, the fear of objects to the right. • Although some of us fear the possibility of cancer, an extreme carcinophobe will convince himself he has cancer because he touched someone who has it.
