Hobby Lobby is basically arts-and-crafts heaven, but it also includes materials for hobbies; picture frames and framing; jewelry making; fabrics; floral supplies; wedding supplies; cards and partyware; baskets, wearable art; home accents; and holiday merchandise. And let me tell you, this company runs a tight ship.

Generally, the prices at Hobby Lobby are good. But if you know the secrets -- these hacks, tips and tricks -- you’ll never pay the full price on anything there again. And you’ll routinely save 50 percent (sometimes up to 90 percent). Here’s how:

This approach to problemsolving sees a success rate on a par with telling ourselves, year after year, that we will be happy when... fill in the blank: the boss gives us that promotion, the spouse develops a fondness for foreign films, and so on.

These fallback behaviors fail because we’re not holding the reins on our own happiness. Other people or pets are the cause of our distress, and other people or pets should get their acts together.

But difficulties are resolved when we acknowledge them for what they are, accept responsibility for our part and take aim at their roots.

This woman had to acknowledge that her dogs didn’t drain her bank account or destroy her marriage. She had to accept responsibility for the fact that she lived with two dogs she had never trained to behave according to her expectations.

And with all the other stressors in her life, she was unable to see through the overwhelm to the source of this particular trouble: lack of training.

Housebreaking is the No. 1 problem among dog owners. It’s also the easiest to remedy.

Most puppies and dogs, regardless of age, can be completely and permanently housebroken in a matter of days. But they must be taught.

After I listened to her, she listened to me.

We agreed that I would go to her home and put the dogs on a housebreaking program, which I did.

Three days later, they were housebroken. Happy endings all around.

But if your marriage ends, through death or divorce, then there is a decent chance your wife might be due widow’s benefits from her first husband. She would get those benefits if they exceed whatever she is due on her own record or what she might be due on your account. And as far as your ex-wife is concerned, as long as she is alive, it is highly unlikely you’d ever be due any of her Social Security.

A: Well, you certainly have some potential

Social Security choices, especially with husbands two and four. You can forget about husband one.

You weren’t married to him long enough. And as long as husband number three is alive, you won’t get anything from his Social Security because the benefit rate payable to a wife (or ex-wife) is much less than the rate payable to a widow.

So that brings us to your second and fourth husbands. In a nutshell, you’d be due widow’s benefits off the account of whichever one of these guys had the higher Social Security benefit. (You can’t get both. Just the one that pays the most.) But then we mix in your own Social Security retirement and that opens up even more possibilities. You could employ the “take one now and save the other for later” option that widows have. For example, if you think you could live on that $1,100 reduced retirement benefit for a few years, then at age 66 you could switch to a 100 percent widow’s benefit from either husband two or four. You’ll need to talk to the Social Security people about all these choices.

Christmas Stand Holds Many Memories Q: This is a picture of a metal Christ-

mas tree stand. It was given to my grandmother by an elderly friend in the 1960s. It is in excellent condition.

The top rotates and the music box plays several Christmas songs. On the side in relief is a Santa Claus carr ying a tree flanked by two children and the words “TRADE -- MARK -- GERMANY.” The bottom is wood with four small feet. There is a lever on the side to turn it on and off. The part that holds the tree trunk is cast iron, and I also have the original key to wind the music box. The overall dimensions are 14 inches in diameter by about 6 inches tall.

We still use it and hope you can tell us something about its histor y and approximately what is it worth.

A: Hungarian emigrant George Zoltan Lef-

ton founded his company in Chicago, in 1941. Most of his porcelain was exported from Japan. When Lefton heard that Pearl Harbor was attacked, he immediately went to the aid of his close friend and neighbor who was a Japanese-American businessman. He arranged to have his friend’s glass storefront boarded up. Before law could be restored, angry misguided mobs were threatening and damaging Japanese-American businesses. After World War II, Lefton was one of the first businessmen to associate with Japanese china factories. His friend was a huge help in dealing with the Japanese. It wasn’t long before his business was booming and he became known as “The China King.”

Based on your description of your cups and saucers, those decorated with pink flowers are examples of Lefton’s “Heritage Green Floral” and those with purple flowers are examples of “Heritage Brown Floral.”

Your set was made around 1960 and each cup and saucer would probably be worth $25 to $35.
