I went to the supermarket to pick up what I needed for a cocktail to bring to a BYOB pool party. One ingredient on my list was fresh mint.

In the produce department, I noticed live plants in small starter pots for $2.50, including mint and basil. The plant was cheaper than the mint that was packaged and ready-to-use.

I purchased the plant, which stayed perky and fresh for my cocktails at the party, and then brought it home to plant in a pot on my patio. I had fresh mint all summer long! I have done this before with basil, too, when I needed it for a recipe.

I store a large tablecloth in the bin on top of the Legos. Lay down the tablecloth and dump the bin. My son understands he can spread out as far as the tablecloth. (Make it a sheet if you need more space.) When it’s time to pick up, grab the four corners of the cloth, dump the Legos in the bin and there you go -- all picked up!

Cocaine and marijuana aren’t the only things being smuggled into the States from Mexico. Monday evening, border patrol officials in San Diego County stopped Raul Jimenez Gonzalez at the Tecate Port of Entry and, while discussing a bottle of tequila, saw something move in his back seat.

The agents lifted a blanket and discovered 15 mixed-breed miniature poodles. All cute as the dickens. All sick as a dog. Most of the pups have parvovirus, which can be fatal -- and could have been prevented.

According to reports, Jimenez Gonzalez told officers he was taking the puppies to Los Angeles to be sold as Christmas presents. This isn’t the first time he’s played Santa Claus. He was accused of smuggling 27 Christmas puppies in 2006 and 11 in 2007. Ho, ho, ho.

Yes, Virginia, ‘tis the season for puppy smugglers, puppy mills and pet stores.

The enormous demand for Christmas puppies baffles me. For most households, the season is louder, busier and more stressful than any other time of year: people coming and going, travel plans to arrange and accommodate, parties to host and attend. Not to mention an abundance of poisonous plants and shiny glass objects that are largely absent from the house the rest of the year.

And outside -- where you and your young pup will be spending a lot of time -- it’s cold, gray, icy and snowing. None of this is conducive to the warm, stable environment in which a new puppy thrives.

But when considered against the harsh realities of puppy trafficking and puppy mills, the demand for Christmas pups is more than perplexing. It’s reckless.

San Diego Department of Animal Services Director Dawn Danielson commented on the market for smuggled puppies during the holiday season, saying, “Unfortunately, most of these puppies are sick. So the buyer ends up spending a great deal of money trying to save the puppy’s life, usually without success.”

In a recent column you said that most people retiring today are waiting until 70 to start their Social Security. But I read an article in USA Today quoting Social Security Administration statistics stating the majority of retirees take their Social Security at 62. Where did you get your information?

A:

Yes, you are right and so is USA Today.

What I meant to say in that column is that based on the emails I get, it seems to me that most people are waiting until 70. The vast majority of people who email me are asking questions about maximizing their Social Security benefits and that usually involves waiting until age 70 to claim the extra 32 percent in “delayed retirement credits” that are added to a person’s monthly Social Security check.

So based on all those emails, I assumed the majority of seniors were doing the same. Obviously, I was wrong.

And I wonder why I am hearing from the age 70 start-date group and not the age 62 startdate group. I’m guessing that those large numbers of people who start their Social Security at 62 don’t have many questions because their Social Security eligibility isn’t too complicated. On the other hand, readers who are into this maximizing business have all kinds of questions because the rules (which I’ve discussed hundreds of times in this column) can get a little complicated.

Having said all that, I do occasionally hear from people planning to take their benefits at age 62 and the rest of today’s column will highlight their questions.

You aren’t due a payment for September. Here is why. Back in the 1980s, a conservative Congress was looking for ways to trim government spending. One of the ideas they came up with was a law that says you have to be 62 for an entire month before you can get your first Social Security check.

Because you were not age 62 for the entire month of September, you can’t get a check for that month.

Q: I plan to start my Social Security

benefits at age 62. Will that decision affect my wife’s eventual widow’s benefit?

A:

Yes, it will. The reduction you take in your retirement benefits will carry over to any widow’s benefits payable to your wife -- with a bit of a twist. At age 62, you are going to get 75 percent of your full Social Security benefit. Let’s say your wife is over age 66 when you die. (It’s too messy to try to explain the reduction factors for a widow who is under age 66.) There is a law that says a widow over age 66 cannot get less than 82.5 percent of your full benefit. So she’ll actually get a 7.5 percent bump in benefits when you die.

This is a photo of an antique bowl that was given to me by a friend. Because I had admired it several times, my friend gave it to me. It is decorated with pastel flowers, gold trim and a white background. The flowers in the center look as though they form the letters “M” and “A.” Marked on the back is a shield with the words and letters “Bavaria -- C -- S -- A.” The bowl measures about 8 inches in diameter and is over 2 inches high. It is in excellent condition.

You have a Dresden-type porcelain re ticulated bowl. It was made by Carl Schumann Porcelain Factory in Arzberg, Bavaria, Germany. The factory was founded in 1881 and closed in 1996.

The mark you described was used from 1900 to 1913. Late 19th and early 20th Dresdenstyle porcelain was inspired by porcelain made in the 1700s by Saxon Porcelain Manufactory located in Germany.

Schumann produced a plethora of whitebody porcelain decorated with delicate multicolored flowers, gold trim and often with reticulated/ pierced borders. The pattern name is “Marie Antoinette,” thus the floral shaped letters “M -- A” in the center.
