This room was a bit different in character from others. Less formal than a living room, the family room was to encourage family connection and conversation. The family room made its first appearance as an appendage of the kitchen, the heart of a home. At the same time, televisions sprouted from coast to coast. Televisions, like the radio was previously, became the anchor of the family room. Today, computer stations and interactive TV games are the main features, however. Because of technological advances, the idea of a family room is slowly fading.

Shelter magazines of the 1960s and ‘70s often referred to the room as a den for gathering. Architecturally, the introduction of sliding glass doors allowed this newly minted room access to the outdoors. Over the years, not much has changed about the decor of this now ubiquitous room. Seating arrangements favored for family rooms are generally L-shaped and U-shaped groupings. Of course, sectionals have found a favorite spot in family rooms for ample and comfortable seating.

Disability Benefits: One Question Leads to Another Q:

I don’t understand. I was getting Social Security disability benefits. But I found a job that I could do. It paid me not much more than minimum wage. But because I made about $18,000 last year, I ended up losing my disability. Yet I just read a stor y about someone who won $50,000 in our state lotter y. This person was getting disability benefits, and she kept those benefits. I made $18,000 and lost my checks. What’s wrong with this picture?

A:

What’s wrong is that you don’t understand what Social Security disability benefits are meant to do or how they work.

You don’t get disability benefits because you have some kind of physical or mental impairment. You get disability benefits because you have a disabling condition that keeps you from working.

In other words, the inability to work is the key to qualifying for benefits. So, if you can go back to work, especially full-time as you did, you simply do not meet the legal definition of disability.

On the other hand, the woman in your town who won the lottery did not work. She just got lucky by buying the right lottery ticket. She could have won a million dollars, and it does not change the fact that she is still disabled and eligible for benefits. My answer to the next question will explain this in more detail.

Q:

I am familiar with someone getting SSDI. Yet, I know he doesn’t need it. He and his wife have money. They have a nice house.

Don’t you have to be poor to get SSI?

A:

Yes, you have to be poor to get SSI. But SSI isn’t the same as SSDI. Let me sort out all this alphabet mess for you and my other readers.

Social Security disability benefits are sometimes known by the acronym, SSDI. That stands for Social Security disability insurance. And as explained above, SSDI is NOT a welfare program. It’s an earned benefit that goes to rich and poor alike, as long as they are disabled.

But SSDI should not be confused with SSI. That stands for Supplemental Security Income.

And SSI is a welfare program. Poor people who are over 65, or poor people who have a disability, might qualify for a small monthly stipend from SSI.

And now let’s add one more noodle to this alphabet soup of acronyms. The disability portion of the SSI program is oftentimes referred to as SSID. That stands for Supplemental Security Income Disability. So I’m sure you can see why people often confuse the SSDI program with the SSID program.

And to clarify one more reason for the confusion, continue reading.

A:

I’m afraid you thought wrong. You don’t have to be poor to get Social Security disability. You have to be disabled. Or to be a little more precise, you have to have worked and paid Social Security taxes for a certain period of time, and you have to have a condition that is severe enough to keep you from working any longer or a condition that is considered terminal.

Maybe this neighbor of yours is dying of cancer. Maybe she has severe heart problems. Who knows? But the point is, she has been declared disabled by an agency (the Social Security Administration) that is known for having some of the strictest disability eligibility criteria around.

The fact that she has money isn’t an issue.

Social Security disability is NOT a welfare program.

I’m not going to name names, but I know a deadbeat in my neighborhood who is ripping off Social Security. He gets a disability check, but there is nothing wrong with the guy. He works in his yard. He runs errands.

I’ve even seen him leave the house with golf clubs! Kick bums like this off the program and Social Security won’t need any other reforms!

If I had a nickel for every guy who told me he knows a friend, a neighbor, a brother-in-law, etc., who is cheating the system, I could stop writing this column tomorrow and move to a villa in the south of France!

I’m not sure if it’s jealousy, pettiness or a misplaced sense of righteousness. But I am sure, as I mentioned earlier, that SSA runs one of the strictest disability programs in the country. You really have to be severely disabled to qualify for benefits. (And, yes, you still could be able to do yard work or even play golf depending on the kind of disability you have.)

Obesity and Diabetes: A Deadly Combination

Type 2 diabetes is occurring with everincreasing frequency in young adults and even children. This alarming statistic is the result of an increase in obesity and sedentary lifestyles.

Reduced muscle mass and increased fat contribute to a condition known as metabolic syndrome, which is associated with insulin resistance.

For reasons that are not clear, increased body fat and reduced muscle make it more difficult for insulin to pump sugar into cells. In susceptible individuals, diabetes occurs when, despite increased insulin concentrations, blood sugar rises to abnormally high levels.

Diabetes is a chronic illness affecting numerous organ systems. These changes account for the majority of diseases accompanying diabetes and contribute to much of the suffering.

Small blood vessels in the retina become occluded. This causes retinal damage, making the retina prone to detachment. To improve blood supply, small blood vessels proliferate. However, they are fragile and prone to rupturing, causing sudden bleeding into the eye and making diabetes one of the most common causes of blindness.

While these problems causwe a great deal of suffering, it is involvement of the kidneys that leads to life-threatening illness. Chronic renal failure gradually develops, and sometimes kidney damage causes excessive loss of protein and electrolytes from the body. Kidney disease raises the blood pressure and aggravates the elevated cholesterol that occurs with diabetes, increasing the risk of heart attacks, strokes and heart failure.

Diabetes is a devastating disease. Lifestyle changes are not a cure, but they can delay by decades or prevent the development of disease.

Children are getting this disease because of their dietary habits, substantial weight gain and lack of any form of exercise. Inactivity and overweight also precipitates the illness at an older age.

It may take many years for this illness to manifest, so at-risk individual’s blood sugar should be screened. If diabetes is diagnosed, it should be an urgent wake-up call for health reform. Weight loss and exercise, by decreasing fat content and improving muscle mass, can often revert metabolism to normal, making more therapy unnecessary. If weight loss and exercise are inadequate, numerous medications are available that can keep blood sugar controlled and prevent the devastating complications of the illness.

This is a photo of an antique settee that I have. It has casters on all four legs. The frame is in ver y good shape but needs to be reupholstered. I think the wood is walnut.

What can you tell me about my settee?

A:

You have an Eastlake period settee.

Most settees had two matching side chairs. The Eastlake period of design lasted from 1870 to 1890 and was one of the many Victorian Era substyles. It was named for English designer and reformer Charles Eastlake.

His views were a reaction to the heavy dark furniture of the mid19th century. EastEastlake furniture was made from lake railed 1870 to 1890. against all the extravagant ornate curved lines of earlier Rococo and Renaissance Revival Victorian furniture.

His book, “Hints on Household Taste” became popular in the United States. It wasn’t long before American factories began making furniture with rectilinear lines, incised carving and stylized decorations. The turned legs with castors, canted back legs, padded arms, incised carving, back cushions framed with straight uprights between a decorative center and incised carved top rails with shallow floral carving are typical of Eastlake factory made furniture. Walnut was usually the manufacturer choice of wood. Nonetheless, a variety of woods were used.

We’ve all had that experience of getting into a deep greenside bunker, only to spend two to three swings before finally expelling the ball onto the green. It usually starts with a poor lie, or sometimes stems from an uncertainty of the texture of the sand.

For many seasonal golfers who play northern courses in the summer, this may be especially true. But a lot of amateurs simply hit too far behind the ball where all of the clubhead speed is absorbed by the extra sand. They think they’re hitting two inches behind the ball, but unfortunately are entering more like four to five inches instead.

Many times I’ve coached golfers to try to feel like they are going to hit right behind the ball on a downward blow. Their eyes should pick a spot perhaps even at the back end of the ball. The reality is that even though they’re trying to hit that visual spot, the club really enters the sand one to two inches behind the ball.

In practice, make a mark near the ball’s position in the sand and compare where your club really hit relative to that mark. When you can consistently hit two to three inches behind the mark, you’re bunker game will dramatically improve!
