• The man best known today as Dr. Seuss was born Theodor Seuss Geisel in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1904. Seuss, a name with Bavarian roots, was his mother’s maiden name and was pronounced “Zoice,” (rhyming with “Joyce”), not the Anglicized pronunciation of “Soose.”

• As a senior at Dartmouth College, Ted Geisel was the editor of “Jack-O-Lantern,” the college’s humor magazine, a medium he used to publish his cartoons. Prohibition was in full swing in 1925, and when Geisel and nine of his friends were caught drinking gin in a dorm room, all the young men were put on probation. Geisel lost his position as editor of the magazine, but continued to publish his cartoons under several aliases, including T. Seuss.

We humans console ourselves and each other by saying things like, “Well, 11 is 77 in dog years.” True, but that’s a mathematical conversion that does nothing to diminish my pain. It feels too short. Too soon. It feels that way in my heart and in my bones, but it wasn’t.

Idol was my big, beautiful boy. Whip-smart, playful and always there for me, it was my turn to go to bat for him. He was suffering from a degenerative spinal disease that left him unable to get up, unable to relieve himself. My wife and I made the decision to end his suffering. It wasn’t easy, but it was right.

We knew we were going to do it the next day, and you know tomorrow is going to come, so we said our goodbyes. My wife and I told Idol how much he meant to us, how much he had added to our lives. Did he understand that? Not in our English terms. But he felt our love. He knew.

The next day, we drove him to the veterinary clinic. We had discussed the whole thing with the vet beforehand. The procedure was painless. I held Idol’s head in my lap and told him how much I loved him, how much joy he gave me, how much he helped me.

And then I cried. Not like a baby, but like a grown man who had just lost his dog. That’s what we do when we lose someone we love. If love could be measured in tears, Idol would be pleased with himself. Then again, what makes dogs so special is that they don’t demand proof of love. They don’t quantify it or keep score or withhold theirs in an attempt to extort ours. They simply give it and give it and give it, never once making the obvious judgment that only a fool would let it go unrealized. I’m proud to know this much of myself: I am no such fool.

I can practically track my life through all my dogs. I can think of no milestone or special occasion that was not intrinsically linked to the canines in my life at the time. I’m ever grateful for the albums crammed with pictures of great dogs alongside growing kids, and for the videos that allow me to watch them run, bark and play, that will forever remind me of their voices, quirky habits and the

More Questions About the Earnings Penalty

In a recent column, I explained to readers who are under 66 and working how they could work with Social Security’s complicated earnings penalty rules to avoid the oftentimes nightmarish bureaucratic hassles involved in dealing with the Social Security Administration on these antiquated laws.

(Rather than rehash the whole story, I suggest that readers who missed the column from a week before last go to this newspaper’s online archives at www. issuu.com/valleybits to find it -- or go to my syndicate’s website: www.creators.com.)

I should have predicted the reaction from two sources. A few current or former Social Security Administration employees criticized me. And many regular readers of the column thanked me and had even more questions. First, an example of a complaint from an SSA employee, and then some questions from readers.

I think you are boneheaded and just plain wrong to advise your readers to lie to the Social Security Administration. Your tactics can only lead to problems. Will you please retract your last column?

A:

No, I will not retract it. I stand by my advice. And I really didn’t tell my readers to lie to SSA. OK, maybe I advised them to fib a little. Or to be more precise, I encouraged them to delay reporting their earnings to you as long as possible. All the facts eventually get reported to SSA and the government gets the money they are due -- in the form of repaid Social Security benefits. It’s just that under my plan, it all happens at one time, as opposed to the piecemeal approach that regular SSA procedures call for.

A:

If Donald Trump calls me up and asks me to be the “King of Social Security,” the very first thing I would do is eliminate the earnings penalty rules that plague working senior citizens under age 66. Here is a little bit of history.

When Social Security was enacted in 1935, the law said benefits could only be paid if someone was completely retired. I guess the thinking was that you must be fully retired in order to get “retirement” benefits.

In the 1950s, they relaxed the rules a bit and said people 75 and older could do some minimal work and keep their Social Security checks. In 1972, the law was amended so that people 72 and older could get all their benefits, no matter how much money was made. In 1981, they dropped that threshold age to 70. And in 1993, they lowered it to “full retirement age” (currently age 66).

But the antiquated earnings penalty rules remain in effect for anyone between age 62 and 66.

If those working seniors make more than about $17,000 annually, they start to lose some or all of their benefits. Why? Or to expand that question a bit: Why make senior citizens getting Social Security benefits who want to work and make a little extra

No. If you want your Social Security checks to start in April, then go ahead and apply for them now to be effective that month.

The only income that counts towards the earnings penalty rules is income that you earn while actively working. So any special payments you get after you retire do not count towards those earnings penalty limits. This could be severance pay, as in your situation. Or it might be compensation such as accumulated sick or vacation pay distributed to you after you retire.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband was admitted to the hospital with a ruptured spleen that bled into his belly. His surgeon repaired it with a coil. He was not in an accident and had no injuries or any bruising anywhere on his body. His doctor had never seen this; he says a ruptured spleen usually is sustained from some sort of accident. My husband is almost 59, and in good health otherwise. How could this happen, and could this happen again? -J.C.

VA Cemeteries Earn Top Rankings

The Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration (NCA) has bested corporations and federal agencies in a survey of customer satisfaction -- for the sixth time.

Since 1999, the government has used American Customer Satisfaction Index methods to gauge satisfaction with agencies.

Here is the most important stat this year: NCA was ranked at 96 points out of a possible 100, the highest score in public and private sectors, and 32 points above the average of 68 for federal agencies. (As a comparison, the IRS received 58 points for individual paper filers and 67 points for small business and self-employed filers.

The Weatherization Assistance Program of the Department of Energy netted 67 points.)

The National Cemetery Administration was scored on maintenance of the national cemeteries, customer service and respectfulness of the service and interment. The customer service score was the highest since the survey first began and next-of-kin respondents indicated a willingness to recommend NCA to others.

Burial in a VA cemetery is open to those who meet the eligibility requirements for minimum active-duty service, were discharged under other than dishonorable conditions and more. Spouses and minor children may be eligible, even if the service member or veteran is still alive. The VA provides headstones or markers, U.S. flag, opening and closing the grave and perpetual care of the site.

Porcelain Coffee Set Is Family Treasure Q:

This is a photo of a porcelain coffeepot with a matching cream pitcher and covered sugar bowl. They are decorated with multicolored flowers and gold trim. The set originally belonged to my husband’s grandmother, and his mother passed it down to us.

Each piece is marked with the words “Royal Vienna -- Germany” and a crown.

We treasure this set, and it has a special place on a self in our curio cabinet. We are wondering whether it has any value other than sentimental. We plan to pass the set on to our kids and would appreciate any information you might have regarding its histor y and value.

Nelson McCoy Pottery made your flower pot/jardiniere. It was located in Roseville, Ohio. Your jardiniere is part of its “Horticulture” line, which was available in several sizes and colors, including green, cream and yellow glazes. The number is a design number.
