But they are not my words. They are the words of Jesse Browning of The History Channel’s “Ax Men.” He used them to describe the incident that took his 4-year-old stepdaughter’s life in 2010.

On that afternoon in February, Ashlynn Anderson’s mother found her bleeding on the family’s front lawn near Astoria, Ore. One of the family’s Rottweilers was standing next to her. The little girl was seriously wounded and did not survive the Life Flight to Oregon Health and Science University Hospital in Portland. She died of injuries sustained during a dog attack.

A while back, the Brownings were a threeRottweiler family. But one of the dogs reportedly bit an adult family member and was subsequently euthanized. On the day Ashlynn was mauled, two Rottweilers and a Labrador were in the fenced back yard and she was alone in the front yard. It is not clear how one of the dogs got loose or what triggered the attack. Clatsop County Sheriff Tom Bergin said, “Apparently, the dog just snapped.”

I took two calls about aggressive dogs last week. The first was from a woman who adopted a dog six months ago. The dog recently bit her friend.

But, she told me, for the first six months he showed no signs of being a biter. He would just “growl and snarl and lunge and stuff.”

The second call was from a mother whose dog had just bitten her daughter’s friend. She, too, said her dog had never shown signs of aggression.

She summed up the dog as being primarily a backyard dog that had never been socialized. I asked her whether they walk the dog. She said no. I asked her how the dog reacts when people come over to the house. “Hackles up, tail down.” She basically described a dog that could easily be triggered to bite.

Then I got this e-mail from a reader:

It’s Nickels and Dimes.

I am always surprised at the number of people who are so darn intent on squeezing every last nickel they can out of their Social Security benefits. I get that people want to get all the benefits for which they are eligible. But some folks seem absolutely obsessed about the issue. I swear they must lie awake at night, worrying about decisions they think will cost them thousands of dollars in lost benefits, but in reality are usually a matter of nickels and dimes. I’ve saved up a few emails from some of these readers to share them with you this week:

Q:

I will turn 70 on April 22, 2017.

I want to make sure I get the full 32 percent bonus for delaying my retirement until that age.

I’m afraid that if I file for those benefits a little early, like in March, for example, that they will start my checks in March and I will lose my bonus. Should I wait until April 21 to file?

A:

It sounds like you think the 32 percent delayed retirement bonus is an all or nothing deal. In other words, you assume you get an extra 32 percent added to your monthly benefits if you wait until exactly age 70 to file. But that is not how it works.

Instead, the delayed retirement credits are calculated this way. You get an extra two-thirds of one percent added to your Social Security benefit rate for each month you delay retirement beyond age 66. That comes out to 8 percent per year, or 32 percent if you wait until age 70 to file.

So, you can file for benefits tomorrow and just tell the Social Security people you want your benefits to start in April when you are 70. And if the worst-case scenario happens, and they start your benefits right away, you would end up getting about a 31 percent bonus instead of 32.

And if that were to happen, you could either keep the extra Social Security check or two that you get, or you could go back to your Social Security office and tell them to change the effective date of your benefits to April.

Q:

I will be 63 in June. I want my benefits to begin then. I understand I will get about 80 percent of my benefits if I do that. I don’t want to take any more reduction than that. How can I make sure my checks start in June?

A:

You can do whatever you want to do, of course. After all, they are your Social Security benefits. So when you fill out your retirement application, just make sure you indicate June 2017 as the month you want your Social Security checks to start.

But frankly, I am a little confused why you are so worried that your benefits start exactly at age 63.

Your monthly benefit rate is reduced about one-half of one percent for each month they are taken before age 66. (The reduction rate is actually five-ninths of one percent for some of the months, and five-twelfths of one percent for the other months. That’s why I just round it out to about one half of one percent.)

You were right that if you take your benefits at 63, you would get 80 percent. But if, for example, they were to start a couple months earlier, you’d get maybe 78 or 79 percent. In other words, you’d lose a few bucks per month, but you’d gain one or two Social Security checks.

So again, just make sure you indicate June

Taylor, Smith & Taylor was founded in 1901.

Leather Flight Pants Are the Bomb

A:

Taylor, Smith & Taylor made your semi-porcelain teapot. It was founded by John Taylor and Charles Smith in 1901 in Chester, West Virginia. The mark you provided was used on the “Lu-Ray Pastels” line that was introduced in 1938. Complete dinnerware sets were available in the following colors: Windsor Blue, Sharon Pink, Chatham Gray, Surf Green and Persian Cream.

Accessory pieces included teapots, serving bowls, sugar bowls, cream pitchers, butter dishes, compartmental plates, saltshakers, pepper shakers, gravy boats and egg cups. The Luray Caverns in Virginia were the inspiration for the name of the line. Taylor, Smith & Taylor was sold to the Anchor Hocking Corp. in 1972. Due to a declining market, the pottery ceased operations in 1981.

Your teapot is an example of the Lu-Ray line, and the color is Windsor Blue. The numbers “1-41” represent the date of manufacture, January 1941.

This is a picture of World War II leather flight pants/bomber pants that my husband brought home in the 1940s. They are lined with fleece, have the original adjustable suspenders and zippers and are in excellent condition. Stamped on the front is a circle with two wings and a star, as well as the words “Army Air Forces.” On the back stamped into the leather are the words “Type 1 -- Medium -- Pat. NO 87 5509 -- MFG SAAD.”

When I’m on the course with a student who’s facing a long shot from the rough, they typically reach for their 3 wood without hesitation. This particular problem is magnified when trying to carry a water hazard or bunker. It seems that the yardage takes precedence over the lie in most of the decisions.

Unfortunately, when it comes to a battle between the 3 wood and a hybrid…. the hybrid wins.

Due to a poor lie in most of these cases, a low lofted (14 degrees), long shafted, high center of gravity clubhead makes it difficult to get a clean hit or much height on the shot. The hybrid, with its shorter shaft, higher loft (17 degrees), and lower center of gravity, gives average swing speeds a chance to hit pro-like shots.
