Low-and-Slow Ribs with Asian Salad

Chinese Five-Spice Grilled Chicken

You’ll need eight hours to slow-cook pork spareribs (on low), but the reward for your patience is delectable.

Lots of flavor from just a few ingredients makes this a cinch for outdoor or indoor grilling.

3 1/2 pounds pork spareribs

1 cups teriyaki glaze (see Tip)

1 (12 to 14 ounces) English (seedless) cucumber, peeled and thinly sliced

1 bag (10 ounces) shredded carrots

1/4 cup seasoned rice vinegar

1/4 cup dry sherry

1 tablespoon Asian sesame oil

1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder

1/4 teaspoon ground red pepper (cayenne)

1 cut-up (8 pieces) chicken (about 3 1/2 pounds), skin removed from all but wings if you like

1/3 cup hoisin sauce

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1 teaspoon sesame seeds

1. In 4 1/2- to 6-quart slow-cooker bowl, place ribs and teriyaki glaze, spreading teriyaki to coat ribs on all sides. Cover slow cooker with lid and cook as manufacturer directs on low setting 8 hours or on high setting 4 hours.

1. In large bowl, stir sherry, sesame oil, five-spice powder and ground red pepper.

2. Meanwhile, in medium bowl, stir cucumber, carrots and rice vinegar until blended.

Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.

Makes 4 cups salad.

3. To serve, transfer ribs to cutting board; cut into portions. Skim and discard fat from cooking liquid. Arrange ribs and salad on dinner plates. Spoon remaining liquid over ribs.

Serves 8.

2. Add chicken to spice mixture and toss until evenly coated. Cover bowl and let stand 15 minutes at room temperature, turning chicken occasionally.

3. Prepare charcoal fire or preheat gas grill for covered direct grilling over medium heat.

In comic strips, in country songs, in Disney films, dogs and babies go together like peanut butter and jelly. In real time, where potential dangers and acts of instinct and nature can’t be edited out, dogs and babies require constant supervision and should never be left alone in a room together.

In Jacksonville, N.C., a 12-week-old pit bull chewed the toes off the left foot of a 4-month-old infant as the child’s mother slept in the same room.

Robie Lynn Jenkins had taken medication that induced a sleep deep enough to drown out her infant’s cries through the night. Jenkins’ boyfriend, Tremayne Spillman, was also asleep in the room.

The couple claim they were watching the puppy as a favor to a friend who was in jail on gun charges.

They now face charges of their own -- felony child abuse.

Before everyone screams, “Pit bull!” a reminder:

Only a month earlier, in Lexington, Ky., the owners of a Native American Indian Dog spotted the family pup trotting toward the woods behind their back yard with their newborn infant in its jaws. Four-day-old Alexander James Smith suffered two collapsed lungs, a skull fracture and numerous cuts and bruises.

A year before that, in Tulsa, Okla., a 6-weekold black Labrador fatally mauled 2-month-old Zane Alen Earles as he sat unattended in an infant swing in the family’s living room. Several relatives were home at the time.

In January 2008, 8-month-old Andrew Stein was inexplicably and fatally mauled by a 7-year-old chocolate Doberman pinscher, the Stein family pet from puppyhood, with no history of aggression.

And in 2001, a 4-pound Pomeranian killed a 6-week-old girl in Los Angeles as she lay in her crib. Afterward, LA sheriff’s Deputy Cruz Solis commented, “Obviously it doesn’t take much to kill a 6-week-old baby, but it’s not something that happens with that breed.”

Obviously, it is.

I don’t collect antiques, but I thought it would make a perfect ser ving dish for birthday and holiday desserts. It is decorated with pastel flowers and trimmed in gold, and the background is white. It is 6 inches tall, and in mint condition.

No one at the tag sale knew anything about its histor y. I paid $20 for it. What can you tell me?

Carpet Rockers Are LateVictorian Vintage

I would like to know the value and vintage of these rocking chairs. They have been in my family for almost 100 years. They are made of walnut and were originally covered with a rug-like material. I had them restored. There is a marking on the bottom of each rocker with the words “Nat’l Mfg. Co., Elbridge, NY.”

You have a nice pair of Victorian Eastlake carpet rockers made by National Chair Manufacturing Co. The company was founded in 1859 and located in Elbridge, Onondaga County, New York. An image of carpet rockers like yours was used on the company’s billhead in 1882.

Charles Eastlake was the father of 19th century household design and architecture. He promoted integrity of design and pride in workmanship. In reaction to the ornate and scrolled Victorian furniture, he believed that furniture lines should be geometric, have incised carving and be affordable.

Zeh, Scherzer & Co. was founded in 1880.

Zeh, Scherzer & Co. made your pedestal cake plate. The factory was founded in 1880 in Rehau, Bavaria, Germany. In the beginning, it made porcelain tea and coffee sets. Then it branched out to tableware and decorative objects.

In the 1980s, the company experienced several financial setbacks and poor sales, and was bought out by an investment company. Operations ceased in 1992.

I know where you think I’m going with this ... that I’m going to bring up the Ryan Lochte “situation.” I am, of course, but only for a brief moment.

Also let me state that Michael Phelps is a freak of nature and broke records that had stood since ancient Greece. Carmelo Anthony has won three gold medals, and Coach K has lost only one game ever in Olympic play. That’s incredible. You want name calling? Just how many kids are going to be named Simone after these Olympics?

Yep, America won the eagle’s share of the gold, and pretty much lapped the competition. For Russia, this was a particularly humiliating Olympics. It’s one thing to implement statesponsored cheating, it’s an entire other thing to get completely nailed for it, too.

The Olympics are actually great places to call names. Everyone knows that there is a tradition at the end of the games to proclaim them as “the best ever,” even if it didn’t happen in Atlanta or Rio, I think. In Atlanta, we received an “attaboy” sentiment, and I believe Rio was simply told they were “magnificent.” Whether or not that was a good thing is for Rio to figure out.

One thing we have figured out is the art of storytelling. Every Olympics, the pre-match bios get more and more “Million Dollar Baby.”

Just once I would like the story of an Olympian to be boring and with no compelling backstory at all. It would really be something to see a b-roll of some kid who simply grew up in Middletown, Wherever, and carried a C or B average through high school, but one day found out he was really fast ... or a really good shot ... and by accident, he tried out for the games and came in seventh.

We never hear those stories.

Your rockers’ designs are similar to the furniture created by George Hunzinger, who was born in 1835 and died in 1898. He was originally from Germany and came from a family of cabinetmakers. His furniture was inspired by the rapidly developing technology and machines of the 1900s.

If there was one consistent takeaway for America from these past Olympics it is that: 1) we have the best athletes (and sport outfitters) in the world, and 2) yeah, we’re more than just a little bit insane.

Sometimes you just have to let the simple ideas win out. We were watching people, athletes, run and jump and play games for their country, and that simple thrill should be enough for us all. ***
