September is Save the Koala Month, an annual effort to protect these unusual animals and their habitat in the wild. Read on to learn more about these curious and cuddly marsupials of Australia.

• Although most of us refer to these animals as koala "bears" they are really not bears at all.

Rather, koalas are marsupials, or pouched mammals, placing them in the same category as kangaroos and wombats. But because their appearance seems to resemble a cute little bear, the bear term has stuck.

• A male koala has a scent gland in the middle of his chest that secretes a dark sticky substance.

Whenever he enters a new tree, he marks his “territory” by rubbing his chest against the tree’s trunk or branches.

• The life expectancy of a koala in the wild is about 20 years. They have few natural predators, only dingos and large pythons, plus owls and eagles that prey on their young.

Cats have never forgotten this.” * You probably won’t be surprised to learn that 92 percent of teens say that they use social media -- the only question there is why the other 8 percent aren’t using it. It is surprising, though, that, according to a recent survey, 54 percent of teens feel their teen years would be happier if social media didn’t exist. * This contentious election season is a good time to increase your vocabulary. Between now and Nov. 8, you may find ample opportunity to use the word “calumniate,” which means “to maliciously make false statements about someone.” * President Lyndon B. Johnson owned four beagles while he was in the White House: Edgar, Freckles, Him and Her. * In 2011, a Denver woman named Susan Cole went to great lengths to avoid jury duty. When she arrived at the courthouse -- with curlers, mismatched shoes and deliberately botched makeup -- she handed District Judge Anne Mansfield a sob story about domestic violence, military service and post-traumatic stress disorder. She was excused from jury duty, and if she’d been smart, that would’ve been the end of the matter. However, a few months later, a radio talk show’s featured topic was avoiding jury duty, and Cole couldn’t resist telling her story in detail. Unfortunately for her, Judge Mansfield also was listening, and Cole was charged with first-degree perjury. * Sometimes a group of rabbits will get really excited and start to jump around wildly.

Stop the Carnage! No More Rotten Produce in the Garbage

I’m having a difficult time wrapping my head around this documented fact: Experts say that almost half of all produce grown in the U.S. is thrown out, while at the same time poverty is ® growing right here in America.

I had assumed that all U.S.-grown bynaively Mary Hunt produce makes it to market, and then consumers take it home, and sometimes we let it go bad before we can consume it, and into the garbage it goes. That happens, but it’s not the whole story.

The truth is that vast quantities of fresh produce are left in the field to rot, become livestock feed or be hauled directly to the landfill because of (get ready) aesthetic standards. Not every potato, watermelon, strawberry or grape turns out to be photo-perfect. Some produce is ugly, and these days that means it does not meet retailer and consumer demands for perfect, blemish-free produce. Just imagine how the retail cost of produce might plummet if all that is produced -- even the nutritious, but ugly produce -- were available for sale.

I don’t know that there’s anything we can do ourselves about this matter of retail waste, but I know we can stop the carnage in our homes.

According to the World Resources Institute, the average U.S. household of four throws out about $1,600 worth of food that goes rotten every year. Wow. That makes my head spin!

Even if that number is far less in your home, consider these three simple ways to stop tossing your dollars in the garbage:

Everyday CHEAPSKATE

DON’T OVERBUY. The way to do avoid overbuying is to have a good, realistic plan for the produce you need, and to be certain you will consume the produce before it goes bad -- regardless of the great sale price or how beautiful it looks in the store. Buying too much is the No. 1 reason household produce lands up in the garbage.

BUY A BLUAPPLE. Bluapple is a clever gadget (available in discount department stores and online) that slows down the ripening process by absorbing natural ethylene gas, which all fruits and vegetables give off as they ripen.

Ethylene is a harmless, odorless and colorless gas. A high concentration of ethylene gas in the refrigerator or fruit bowl speeds up the ripening process, which hastens spoilage.

The folks at Bluapple estimate that by placing one in the refrigerator with the produce and another in the fruit bowl on the counter, the typical household can cut its annual food bill by $600. Not bad!

The only trick is remembering to replace the ethylene-absorption packets every few months to ensure that your Bluapple is working at peak efficiency.

Bluapple realy works. If you’re interested, I recommend starting with the Bluapple OneYear Combo Pack (about $15), which includes two Bluapples (one for the refrigerator, one for the fruit bowl) and six ethylene-absorption packets, which is what you need for one full year of Bluapple use.

FOODSAVER. A FoodSaver vacuumsealing machine is the best option for extending the life of produce. Food can be vacuum-sealed

in bags or specific FoodSaver canisters. However, my favorite method of storing food -- everything from strawberries to tomatoes and everything between -- is in ordinary glass canning jars. You will need a Jar Sealing Kit (about $25), which attaches to the FoodSaver. Simply fill a glass canning jar (regular or wide-mouthed) with unwashed produce like strawberries, blueberries, tomatoes, lettuce, etc. Set the lid on the jar, and apply the jar sealer. Start the machine, and it sucks all of the air from the jar and seals the jar tightly. If stored in the refrigerator, the contents will remain fresh and beautiful for weeks, not days. (FoodSaver prices vary from about $75 to $275 or more, depending on the model.)

One last thing: A fairly new company called Imperfect Produce offers a subscription delivery service for "ugly" food. The San Francisco Bay Area-company estimates that about onefifth of all fruit and vegetables end up in the dump because they don’t meet the industry standard of perfection. Imperfect Produce offers perfectly healthy and nutritious ugly produce for up to 50 percent less than retail store prices. At this time, Imperfect Produce only delivers in the San Francisco Bay Area. August 30 is observed as National Toasted Marshmallow Day. What better time for Tidbits to focus on this tasty little confection!

• Around the year 2000 B.C., the ancient Egyptians began using a wild herb found growing in marshlands to produce a sweet treat. The roots of the marsh mallow plant, or Althaea officinalis plant, (related to the cotton plant), provided a sap that was boiled with sugar or honey until the mixture thickened, after which it was strained and cooled. The little candies were given only to nobility and Pharaohs, and it was a punishable crime for others to consume them.

“When Good Dogs Do Bad Things” is the title of a book on dogs that I co-authored with Mordecai Siegal. Chapter three is titled, “Your Dog’s Personality.” That’s right, your dog’s personality is weighty enough to warrant an entire chapter in a book.

When we discuss a dog’s personality, it’s important to note the difference between personality and temperament. Temperament is one’s natural disposition, determined by genes. Personality, as written in chapter three, “encompasses genetically derived behavior along with environmentally influenced behavior, which can, to some degree, be modified.”

Understanding your dog’s personality is infinitely useful. In fact, it’s wise to get to know a dog’s personality before he becomes your dog. Think of it as a chance to choose a relative. And choose carefully. This dog will be your responsibility and a big part of your life for the next 15 years or so.

There are six canine personality types, and any one dog can have up to five of the six types. The only personality types that are exclusive of each other are “nervous” and “sedate.” There’s no such thing as a relaxed, nervous dog.

The six personality types are:

-- hardheaded/stubborn

-- laid-back/sedate

-- excitable/nervous

-- timid/shy

-- responsive

-- aggressive

There are five tests that will help you unravel the mystery of your pup’s personality. The tests and their general purpose are listed below.

More Insights Into SSA Operations

About a month ago, I wrote a column that led to some insights into the way the Social Security Administration operates. That led to more questions from more readers, and my answers in today’s column provide even more insight:

Q:

When I need help filing my taxes, I can find a wide variety of tax preparation services, either via the computer (something like TurboTax) or one-on-one personal help (something like H&R Block). Of course, I could also deal directly with the Internal Revenue Service. But frankly, who wants to do that? Yet when it comes to dealing with Social Security, it seems I have no choice. I can’t find any private help and I have to work directly with the Social Security Administration. Do you know why that is? Is there a law that prevents businesses from offering Social Security consulting ser vices?

A:

There is no law that prevents anyone from offering to serve as a private Social Security consultant. In fact, I’ve often thought about getting into that racket myself. It’s just that since I retired from the Social Security Administration 10 years ago, I’ve been more inclined to play Scrabble on the back porch with my wife than to sit at my desk and help people fill out Social Security forms!

Security consultants,” you will find more than a few businesses that offer such services, especially outfits that help people maximize their retirement benefits or file for disability benefits. But certainly nowhere near the number of outlets there are for tax preparation and consulting.

Part of that has to do with the institutional history of the agencies involved. From its inception, the Social Security Administration’s business model was based on one-on-one personal service.

But times are changing and SSA is trying to move to a more centralized system based on telephone and online service delivery. Still, the agency has 1,300 field offices in big cities and small towns across the country. I don’t think IRS has anywhere near that number of offices. One-on-one personal service just isn’t part of their culture.

Also, of course, taxes need to be done every year, whereas for most people, filing for Social Security benefits is an once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Q:

When my wife and I recently went to my local Social Security office to apply for our retirement benefits, I was shocked. I expected to find a waiting room full of grandmas and grandpas. In other words, folks like us.

But instead, we saw an office full of mostly young people, cr ying babies, and street people. It was a surprising, and frankly, an unpleasant, experience. Is this what has become of Social Security? Are we handing out government benefits to young kids and homeless people?

A:

There is a part of me that wants to sympathize with you. That’s the old codger in me who remembers the days when I first started working for SSA about 45 years ago. Back then, Social Security offices were downright pleasant places to visit. Waiting rooms were filled with mostly old folks there to file for retirement or widow’s benefits, with a sprinkling of middle-aged people applying for disability benefits. But then two things changed forever the way Social Security offices look and operate.

One was the expanded use of the Social Security number, especially for children. For example, I didn’t need a Social Security card until I was 16 years old and got my first job. But for many years now, even the tiniest babies need Social Security numbers. Children today need Social Security numbers for a variety of reasons (school and medical records, for example). But they primarily need an SSN so parents can claim them as dependents on their tax return. So the vast majority of those young people and “crying babies” you saw in the SSA waiting room were there to either get a first-

time Social Security number or replace a lost card.

I’d guess that 70 percent of the walk-in traffic you see in a Social Security office is for Social Security number and card transactions.

And the second big change was the advent of the Supplemental Security Income program in the mid-1970s. SSI is a federal welfare program (funded out of general tax revenues, not Social Security taxes) that pays a very small monthly stipend to poor older folks who are over age 65 or to poor disabled people and children. Back in the ‘70s, the government looked around to find a federal agency to run the program, and gave it to the Social Security Administration. So the sort of down-an-out people you see in an SSA office are usually there to file for SSI benefits.

Don’t get me wrong. People who are down on their luck have just as much right as anyone else to go to a government office. I’m simply making the point that the SSI program has changed the nature of your local Social Security office.

Q:

I am thinking about retiring. I called Social Security’s 800 number and someone there told me my benefit rate would be $2,150 per month. But I also visited my local Social Security office and the person there told me I would get $2,130 monthly.

Why the difference in benefit rates? And should I file my claim over the phone because it sounds like I will get an extra $20 per month from those folks?

A:

No matter where you go to inquire about or to file for Social Security benefits, all Social Security offices and phone centers and linked to the same computer system. So you are not going to end up with a different benefit amount depending on which Social Security service outlet you use. Again, all claims, wherever they are filed, will be processed by the same system.

I can think of several reasons that might account for the different benefit quotes you received. The most likely scenario is that one outlet gave you an estimate using your most recent earnings while the other outlet, for a variety of possible reasons, did not incorporate those earnings into your estimate. When you actually file your claim, again no matter where you do so, the computer system will use all the earnings posted to your files. * * *

This is a photo of an elephant planter made by Haeger Potteries. It is decorated with a white, matte glaze and measures 10 inches high, 8 inches wide and 10 inches deep. There is an original label that indicates it was crafted for Heager’s 75th anniversar y.

Could you estimate the value of my planter?

German immigrant David Haeger founded the Dundee Brickyard in 1871, which became Haeger Potteries.

It was located along the Fox River in East Dundee, Illinois, 45 miles northwest of Chicago. The riverbanks were a source of rich clay.

Haeger Potteries provided huge amounts of brick to Haeger Potteries was founded in 1871. help rebuild Chicago after the disastrous fire of 1871. By 1900, the company had begun making clay flowerpots, and in 1912 it introduced a line of glazed artware.

I have inherited a complete set of porcelain china from my grandmother. She was married in 1950 and received the set for a wedding gift. Each dish has this mark on the back. The set is a ser vice for eight people.

It is decorated with gold bands on the edges against a white background.

He founded his first porcelain factory, which was one of several plants, in 1879 in Selb, Bavaria, Germany. During World War II, the Third Reich forced Rosenthal to leave the company because of his Jewish descent.

His son, Philip Rosenthal, joined the company in 1950. In 2009, the company was purchased by the Italian manufacturer Sambonet Paderno Group and now operates as Rosenthal GmbH. The mark you provided was used from 1907 to 1956.

Do It Better

The Hall of Fame, for any sport, can be a bit of a buzzkill.

For one thing, casual followers of the sport could not care less about who a bunch of journalists or insiders choose to venerate in their hallowed halls. I mean, my favorite baseball players growing up were Graig Nettles, Rick Cerone, Mike Pagliarulo and Don Mattingly. They all make my personal Hall of Fame. Know how many of them made the actual Hall of Fame?

Zero. Zilch. Nada.

That’s fine, however. It’s not like anybody else gets to see their favorite player make the Hall in regular order. Look, we all like and appreciate the superstars ... but when it comes to picking your favorite player, you have to kind of skip the obvious favorites. Nobody picks Jerry Garcia as their favorite member of the Grateful Dead and nobody picks John Lennon as their favorite Beatle. Those two picks are implied ... it’s the McCartney, Weir, Harrison, Pigpen picks that separate the real fans from those just passively listening or looking in.

Don’t think you’re above it all, by the way ... outside of Cooperstown and Canton, can you name the location of your favorite sport’s Hall of Fame? And even if you did your best to follow that sport, let’s be honest ... you can’t match the rabid voraciousness of your earliest years following your favorite sport.

Still, there are certain moments that bring us all together, and no other sporting event can come close to matching the Olympics. The same week that saw Michael Phelps win his 21st gold medal also saw the National Football League’s Hall of Fame game canceled due to poor field conditions. This brings me to a serious point.

When I was a kid, my parents used to host “gourmet” dinner parties in the formal dining room that my younger sister and I were never allowed to step foot in on days other than Thanksgiving and Christmas. We understood that it was off limits, but we also understood that it was ready to be used at a moment’s notice.

Not so in Canton, Ohio. With a mere 90 minutes to go, the Hall of Fame Game was called off due to unplayable conditions at its newly remodeled stadium and football field. Leave it to the NFL to take a game that has just two serious requirements in order to play -- a flat surface consisting of 100 yards and two goalposts -- and completely blow it. Even the local high school, which planned on playing its games there this season, knew the field was unplayable and made other plans, but not the NFL. Its decision to skip playing the game was met with a collective yawn, once again proving that nobody likes exhibition football games anyway.

Meanwhile, in Rio, despite all the talk of a city on the brink of collapse, things were going pretty well -- particularly for the Americans, who as of this writing were dominating the medal count. Every hour, our athletes stand up on top of the podium, their eyes filled with tears of joy as our national anthem plays. Watching them walk up there begs the question: Who needs a Hall of Fame, anyway? Sometimes it’s better to just live the moment. ***
