I heard some simple words for dog owners to live by on the radio recently, and they are paraphrased here:

Don’t ask: “What did you do?” He’ll never answer you.

Don’t say his name with the word “no.”

He’ll never come to you.

Don’t point your finger at him. He’ll never trust your hands.

Don’t say “no” over and over and over again.

It’s only a word.

Don’t tell him he’s a bad dog. Why is he a bad dog? Maybe it’s you!

“Don’ts” are often thought of as negative speak, especially on the West Coast. But these are the good don’ts, the important ones, the ones that will keep your relationship with your dog strong and healthy as the two of you navigate the challenges of interspecies communication.

With the right approach to training, canine behavior can be modified from as early on as 8 weeks to as late in life as 12 to 14 years. The “right” approach is determined by the dog -- or, rather, his personality or temperament. For example, a hardheaded dog will require a firm voice and technique; whereas, a timid dog would only be made more fearful by the same treatment.

Bottom line: In order to train your dog, you have to know your dog. And part of knowing your dog is knowing dogs in general and what to expect.

Dogs bark. They chew. They jump, dig, nip, teethe, whine, wiggle and bark some more. None of this is bad -- it’s just dogs being dogs. But some of these behaviors may not align with your expectations.

Consider yourself warned: Expect these behaviors. When your expectations are realistic, you can prepare.

Ever heard of the Five P’s? Purpose, Preparation, Planning, Practice and Performance. They serve as good guidance in the business world, and they apply to dog training, too.

Some Insights Into SSA Operations Q:

I work for the Social Security Administration in the Dallas area. I enjoy reading your column and I have even learned a few things about the Social Security program.

I like the way you explain the reasoning behind various laws to your readers. That is something that is lacking in the training we get from SSA. But I do have one gripe. I wish you would stop telling people to “talk to someone at their local Social Security office” or to “visit their local Social Security office.” Our staffing levels are always being cut. People should tr y to resolve their business at our toll-free number or at our website. If they insist on going to a Social Security office in person, they should call first to make an appointment. Thanks for listening.

A:

Point well-taken. Although people can just drop into any Social Security office and eventually get served, it makes more sense to call ahead of time to make an appointment. They should call SSA’s toll-free number -- 800-772-1213 -- to do that.

And more and more people are comfortable taking care of their Social Security business online.

SSA has a pretty good and easy-to-navigate website that lets you do just about anything from your computer.

So why do I tell people to “talk to someone

at their local Social Security office”? I guess it’s partly because I’m an old-fashioned guy. I miss the days when a Social Security office was a nice place to visit. And people would just drop in anytime. No appointments necessary.

And part of being old-fashioned is that I do miss the one-on-one personal service people used to get. I liked sitting down with folks and not only helping them fill out benefit application forms but also explaining why rules and laws were in place and how the system worked.

It is obviously more efficient to try to handle as much Social Security work as possible via the phone or computer. But I still think there are some things that can be handled best by sitting down and talking to a real human being.

Q:

I am a 72-year-old widow. I get two Social Security payments each month.

One is my own Social Security check and the other is a widow’s payment. I have no problem with that. But I have a neighbor who also is a widow. She also has her own Social Security.

But she gets just one check for the combined amount of her own Social Security benefit and her widow’s benefit. I am just curious.

Can you explain why I get two checks but my neighbor just gets one check?

A:

I am going to guess that you and your husband came from different parts of the country, while your neighbor and her husband were from roughly the same area.

And why that is an issue with your Social Security checks has to do with how the Social Security Administration handles and processes Social Security claims.

As you probably know, there are a wide range of Social Security numbers, almost all of them starting in the 001 to 600 range. Those numbers are assigned based on where you were living when you applied for a Social Security card. For example, my Social Security number starts with 394. And you can check SSA’s website and learn that 394 numbers were issued in Wisconsin. Lower numbers were issued on the East Coast, and they got progressively higher going down the Atlantic seaboard and then farther and farther west.

SSA has seven processing centers around the country, where all Social Security claims -whether taken in local Social Security offices or over the phone or online -- eventually end up. And claims are distributed to these processing centers based on the Social Security number. I don’t know the precise breakdown, but for example, there is a processing center in New York that handles all claims with SSNs in roughly the 001 through 199 range. Another center in Birmingham, Alabama, handles cases with numbers in the 200 range. A center in Chicago handles the 300 numbers. And so on.

Now getting back to your question. Let’s say that you are originally from the east Coast and have a SSN that begins 009. And your husband was from the Midwest and has a number that begins with 337. Your Social Security claim would have

been sent to New York, and your Social Security checks are authorized by that processing center.

Your widow’s claim on your husband’s Social Security record would have gone to Chicago, and so your widow’s benefit checks come from there.

On the other hand, your neighbor and her husband must have come from the same general area. So both her retirement claim on her own SSN and her widow’s claim on her husband’s SSN went to the same processing center, and they were able to simply combine her payments into one check.

Q:

I’m the kind of guy who likes to see things in black and white directly from the source before I believe them. When it comes to Social Security, I’m not saying I don’t believe what you say. But I’d like to see the rules and regulations you discuss in your column in writing from the Social Security Administration. But I am having a hard time finding source information on Social Security’s website. Can you help?

A:

I can steer you to two sources of information from SSA. One is something called the Programs Operations Manual System. It’s essentially the bible for the rules and regulations that govern Social Security programs and policies. It’s the same source every SSA employee uses. To find POMS, go to www.socialsecurity.gov. Pull down the “Menu” button at the top of the homepage and under “Research Policy and Planning” click on the “Program Rules” link and then on “Employee Operating Instructions.”

But if you want something a little less comprehensive and a much easier to understand, then I suggest you look through one or more of the hundreds of pamphlets and fact sheets the agency produces. You’ll find this source material at SSA’s website under the “Publications” link near the bottom of the homepage. * * *

Psoriasis and its common complication, psoriatic arthritis, together are a highly destructive arthritis that often requires powerful treatment: biologic agents, like adalimumab (Humira) or etanercept (Enbrel). These do have the possibility of serious side effects, such as reactivation of tuberculosis.

Green Nail Syndrome Is Not Easy to Treat

DEAR DR. ROACH: For the past four months, I have had an infection around the cuticle of my right index finger. There is green coloration under the nail near the cuticle, and the nail grew rather deformed. I am a gardener and a homemaker, so I tend to wash my hands often. The urgent-care doctor I saw prescribed clindamycin and mupirocin cream. I also was told to soak my finger twice a day. My family doctor took a culture and, because she did not know if I had a fungus or an infection, prescribed Lamisil and levofloxacin. She also recommended saltwater or peroxide soaks twice daily. The culture showed pseudomonas as the cause of the infection.

With no improvement, I saw an orthopedic doctor. He told me to continue the soaking and the mupirocin cream. On my second visit, he lanced the area between the cuticle and the nail bed. There was improvement, but the symptoms soon returned.

The orthopedic doctor spoke of removing the nail as a possible solution to clearing up the infection. Is this my next step, or is there something else I can do? -- P.B.

ANSWER: It sounds as though you have the aptly named “green nail syndrome,” which is caused by the bacteria you mention, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and which often is complicated by a paronychia, an infection along the side of the nail. Your orthopedic surgeon is quite right that sometimes the nail needs to be removed; however, many people can avoid that unpleasant procedure (I had to perform it once) with ciprofloxacin (the best oral antibiotic against pseudomonas), antiseptic soaks and by keeping the hands meticulously dry, using gloves and even using a hairdryer to dry the nails after soaking or cleaning.

Your postcards were part of series and each one would probably be worth $5 to $15.

I have enclosed a picture of a postcard. It is one of a set of four that have been in the family for a long time. Each has a picture of a young woman seated at an organ. Below her are the words of a poem/song titled “The Lost Chord.” The set is numbered 1 through 4. Also, at the bottom of each card is the name “Bamforth.”

You have a set of ashtrays that were made by Cowan Pottery. R. Guy Cowan founded his pottery in Cleveland in 1912. In 1921, he moved his factory to nearby Rocky River, Ohio. Cowan pieces were known for their sleek and strong shapes that were influenced by art deco designs.

The Great Depression took its toll on the pottery, and the company was forced into bankruptcy. By 1932, all operations were ceased.

Your ashtrays were made in 1929. They were sold in sets of four. The Collector’s Encyclopedia of Cowan Pottery lists their shape as No. 927-F. Your set would probably be worth $25 to $50.

The New Villains

I think I remember a time when letting your little kid win was the correct and right thing to do.

Now, thanks to PlayStation and Xbox, it is pretty much impossible to beat them.

Over the holidays my nephew showed me his new game, NBA whatever. “Cool,” I thought.

Well ... it was more than just cool. It was a “mindbending” experience. I’m not going to date myself, but Blip was our Game Boy, and our basketball game was decided by the guy who could hit the most unmissable corner threes. His game was better than anything I’d ever seen.

“Let’s play!” he says. “Sure,” says me.

“What team do you want to be?”

Without hesitating, I say the Knicks -- my least favorite, favorite team. (He usually picks the Philadelphia teams, so I always begin a video game with the better team.) After messing around with the uniform selection for, oh, about 20 minutes, he picks his team.

“I pick Michael Jordan, Lebron James, Kareem, Bird and Tim Duncan,” he replies, before handing me a controller with 20 different knobs, levers and buttons. “Good luck!”

So the little runt, formerly known as my great little nephew, proceeds to trounce me. Every once in a while, I get Carmelo Anthony to drive to the hoop uncontested, but it ends up as a travel because I have no clue how to make him let go of the ball.

“Wanna play again?”

Fact is, I can’t blame him. On long plane flights I like to play MLB Manager, and I always cheat by choosing the team with the first draft pick and trade until I have an outfield consisting of Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle and Babe Ruth (Ted Williams at DH), and a starting rotation of Feller, Koufax, Walter Johnson, Cy Young and Greg Maddux. I get upset when we don’t win 140 regular season games.

But sometimes my team gets swept by the St. Louis Browns in the World Series. It happens.

Herb Brooks used to say that “all-star teams don’t work.” This observation, while mostly true, has been disproven by the NBA Olympic “Dream Team” concept, but we get the point, and besides, it’s different when it comes to individual leagues. Every year, the New York Yankees field an All-Star team on paper, and they don’t (usually) win.

Then there’s the curious case of Kevin Durant. Fans in Oklahoma City are inconsolable -- they’ve lost the face of their franchise ... the only superstar they’ve known since their inception.

Where is he going? He’s going to join Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, to form what will be, in all likelihood, the greatest team of all-time.

We’ve seen this before (Miami Heat), and you know, they probably won’t win every game. My only question is, how come Oakland has all this money? What is wrong with the Knicks?

My advice to Oklahoma City and all the other franchises struggling to keep pace is to look at this another way: You didn’t lose a player, the entire league found a new villain. * * *

The Academy members knew the strychnine would normally have given him spastic convulsions and quickly killed him, yet he confidently walked among the shocked assembly unharmed. Amazed by the indisputable evidence they witnessed, they knew this was a monumental breakthrough in the treatment of poisoning.

• For the next century, charcoal, because of its incredibly absorbent nature, was the premiere antidote the world over. In the stomach it absorbs and deactivates alcohol, arsenic, barbiturates, cocaine, digitalis, ipecac, morphine, nicotine, opium, and quinine, among other things. Even today, a poison victim in a modern hospital is often treated with a hemodetoxifier, in which the blood is removed from the body, run through a medical-grade charcoal filter, then infused back to the bloodstream. 
