• The habitat of kangaroos varies by species. The tiny musky-rat kangaroo beds down in little nests in Queensland’s rainforests. Gray kangaroos like the Australian and Tasmanian forests, while the antilopine prefers the eucalyptus woodlands.

• The four different species of kangaroos all reside in Australia – the red kangaroo, the eastern, the western gray, and the antilopine kangaroo.

The red kangaroo is the largest, as well as the largest of all marsupials. Its length from head to rump is between 3.25 and 5.25 feet, with the tail adding about another 40 inches. On the park's Opening Day, with the mad rush of uninvited guests, the ride became so overcrowded it nearly capsized.

They quickly realized that a maximum safe passenger capacity had not been established.

In all likelihood, the answer is yes. That word has been used at least since the 14th century to insult those considered to be cowardly. * It was once against the law in some places -- England, for example -- for a man to marry his brother’s widow. It was considered to be an incestuous relationship. * On a per-capita basis, Canada is the most educated place in the world; more than half of the country’s residents have earned at least one college degree. * According to a study conducted by researchers at Emory University, heterosexual couples who spend more than $20,000 on their wedding were three and a half times as likely to have shorter marriages than those who were more frugal.

This principle extends to the ring, too; men who spent more than $2,000 on an engagement ring were more likely to end up divorced. * It takes about consecutive 70 hours to read the entire Bible aloud -- even longer if you take breaks to sleep and eat (and, one would hope, to shower). * Aside from being plant products, what do pinecones and pineapples have in common? Get Back at Your Creditors

Late fees, punitive interest rates and over-limit fees are piling up on your credit reports. It’s enough to make you scream! ®

It’s not that your creditors are doing anything illegal. You just didn’t understand the power

by Mary Hunt you gave them when you opened that credit card. (It was buried in the fine print.) And now it seems like they’re staying up late looking for new ways to stick it to you. If you’ve just about had enough, maybe it’s time for you to turn the tables and get back at them. Here’s how.

Pay your bills early.

Nearly 30 percent of a credit card company’s profits are derived from fees -- annual fees, late fees and over-limit fees. You’d think they would be pretty satisfied with all that interest you send them each month, but no. They want more.

The days when issuers allowed 10 to 15 days for a late payment to arrive before charging a fee are long gone. Now those fees kick in if you’re five minutes late, and they can range from $20 to $39 per occurrence.

Get back at your credit card company by deciding right now to never pay another dime in late fees. Make your payments quickly. Send them in the preprinted envelopes that come with your statement. Don’t enclose a note in the envelope, decorate the envelope with stickers, use a paper clip or do anything else that will pull your payment out of the fast track and into manual processing. You can also make payments online.

Your credit card account most likely has a credit limit. Stay below the limit. Running up a balance that is anywhere near your limit is deadly to your credit score. The rule of thumb is you should never charge more than 30 percent of your credit limit per month. For example, if your limit is $1,000 you should never have a balance exceeding $300. A zero-dollar balance is even better! Get back at your credit card company by creating a wide margin between your balance and your limit.

Stop using your credit card.

Card companies are playing the odds.

They know that the more you use your card, the better the chance you’ll go nuts and rack up a ton of debt. Once your balance becomes greater than what you can pay off in a single month they’ve got you. They do all they can to encourage this to happen. Get back at your company

Everyday CHEAPSKATE

Open your eyes.

All of your creditors know what’s in your credit report. Part of your credit card agreement is that they can check up on you whenever they like to see how you are handling your financial affairs. Get back at your creditors by staying ahead of them. Read your credit report regularly.

If you don’t understand what it says, ask someone to explain it. And if you see something on there that you know to be untrue, then dispute it.

But don’t stop there. If your creditors are punishing you for things on your credit report that are not true, don’t sit back and be passive. Get it fixed, and then confront them. Don’t back off until they reverse the action.

Pay off your credit cards. There’s probably nothing more beneficial than bringing your balance to zero. It’s like getting a tax-free raise because you keep all that money you’ve been sending to your creditors each month.

Get back at your creditors by refusing to send them one more penny of interest. ***

Cool Canines

As summer heats up and several states turn to burn bans and water rationing to combat prolonged droughts, dog owners must pay careful attention to keeping their canines cool.

Some dogs, particularly the snub-nosed breeds like pugs, bulldogs, boxers and Lhasa apsos, will make this easy on us and simply revert to air-conditioned hibernation until temperatures outside relax.

Others, no matter the climate, will not forsake their beloved backyard. It is with these stalwarts in mind -- guardians of the yard, lovers of the swimming pool, keepers of the garden -- that I offer the following guidance.

Limit summer walks to early morning or late evening, and keep them relatively short. As a general rule, if the sidewalk is too hot for your bare feet, it’s too hot for your dog’s paw pads.

If for some reason your dog is not allowed to luxuriate indoors, he’ll need a covered shady spot to retreat to at any given time of day and cool, fresh drinking water available at all times. The ideal outdoor water bowl is weighted to avoid spilling, and it’s smart to have two or more bowls per dog set out.

Many dogs are natural swimmers, but don’t set Fido loose in the pool (or lake or river) until you know two things with certainty: 1) He really does know how to swim, and 2) He knows how to get out of the pool. Even great swimmers will tire and drown if they aren’t taught how to exit a swimming pool. And if your pool has no steps and no shallow end, your dog has no exit and no resting place, so you’ll need to keep it covered.

But it’s not just dogs and pools that don’t always make for happy endings. Doggie doors are installed to give a dog free access to both yard and house. But they also give small children free access to yard and house. If you have all four -- pool, doggie door, dog and child -- make sure both dog and child know how to swim and how to get in and out of the pool unassisted. Otherwise, keep the pool covered.

Questions About Widow’s Benefits Q:

I understand paying benefits to widows. But I don’t understand paying benefits to divorcees. A woman who is divorced is not a widow. She is an ex-wife. So why does she have a claim to her ex-husband’s Social Security?

A:

When Social Security first started, the program did not pay benefits to divorced women.

But that led to many unfair situations. Consider this not uncommon scenario. Bill and Rita were married for 35 years. Rita spent much of her married life as a wife, mother and homemaker -- just the way Bill wanted it. As they are pushing their 60s, Bill started flirting with one of his younger co-workers, Connie.

Bill eventually dumped old reliable Rita and moved in with cute and cuddly Connie.

Under original Social Security law, poor Rita was left out in the cold with nothing when it came time for Social Security. That’s why Congress changed the law to say that a divorced woman had a claim on her ex-husband’s Social Security.

The first law they wrote for divorcees said that a woman had to be married for at least 20 years to qualify for benefits from the ex. But many women said that 10 years of life with a philandering fool was enough. That’s why advocacy groups got on the bandwagon and lobbied Congress to change the law so that women could get benefits from an

ex-husband as long as the marriage had lasted at least a decade.

So, in a nutshell, here are the rules for divorcees. A woman can get benefits from her exhusband’s Social Security record if:

--He is at least age 62 (he doesn’t have to actually be getting Social Security himself).

--She is at least age 62 and not working (or working and earning less than about $16,000 per year).

--The marriage lasted at least 10 years.

--She isn’t currently married.

--She isn’t due higher benefits on her own Social Security record.

If her ex-husband is deceased, essentially the same eligibility rules would apply, except that she could get benefits as early as age 60.

By the way, you are right when you said that a woman whose ex-husband dies is technically not his widow. And Social Security law recognizes that, too. So the legal term used to describe a woman in this situation is a “surviving divorced wife,” and the Social Security checks she would qualify for are called “surviving divorced wife’s benefits.”

But I find that term a bit awkward. So I just call a woman whose ex-husband has died a “divorced widow.”

Q:

Last year, my 59-year-old mother was getting a Social Security disability check in the amount of $800. Then my father died right after her 60th birthday. He was getting $2,500. So she filed for widow’s benefits. I know that at age 60, she should have gotten 70 percent of his benefit, or $1,750. So to our way of thinking, she should be getting $2,550 per month ($1,750 plus $800 = $2,550.) But she is only getting $1,750 per month. Can you explain this?

A: I’m pretty sure I can explain. But because I don’t know all the facts about your mom’s case, you really should talk to someone at your local Social Security office about this.

The basic answer to your question is this: as a general rule, whenever you are due two Social Security benefits, you don’t get them both. You get the one that pays the higher rate -- or you get a combination of benefits that cannot exceed the higher benefit you are due.

You certainly do. Because you were married to him at least 10 years and you are not currently married, you are eligible for divorced widow’s benefits. Even though you are still working full time, you can claim those benefits because you are over age 66.

And you qualify for the same benefit incentive available to any widow. And that incentive says you can take your widow’s benefit now, and save your own benefits until age 70, when you can switch to your own retirement benefits and get the delayed retirement bonus you mentioned -- which, by the way, is a 32 percent increase tacked on to your monthly retirement checks.

ANSWER: Polymyalgia rheumatica is a common illness, almost always found in people over 50. It causes pain and stiffness, especially in the arms and shoulders, and especially in the morning. It responds very well to low to moderate doses (10-20 mg) of prednisone. The prednisone is continued usually for one to two years.

Vision Loss May Cause Hallucinations

DEAR DR. ROACH: When I lost the vision in my eye in an accident, I had Charles Bonnet syndrome hallucinations. I am 80 years old, and I went completely blind in one eye. There were patterns that I saw whenever my eye was unfocused, which pretty much obscured everything. I saw complicated figures like very bright TV. I have read Oliver Sacks’ explanation in his latest book, called “Hallucinations.” What I viewed is exactly how he described CBS. Seven months later, I am still having hallucinations, but they are much subdued and not very interesting. I think it is gradually disappearing.

PMR often is associated with a more serious condition, temporal (or giant cell) arteritis.

Any symptoms of vision loss need to be evaluated immediately, since permanent blindness can result. ***

What concerns me is that none of the hospital personnel knew of the syndrome.

The best that was offered was that it was from a bladder infection, which I did not think I had. I imagine that there are a lot of old blind folks who think they are crazy, and there is no one to tell them otherwise. I am hoping you might write an explanation for all of us who have failing eyesight and no explanation for what ails us. ANSWER: I can’t criticize the doctors at your hospital too much, since I had never heard about this type of hallucination before your letter.

In fact, a brief survey of some colleagues, with hundreds of combined years’ worth of clinical experience, showed me that many of us, unlike Dr. Sacks, had never heard of this syndrome, so I am glad to be able to bring it up.

Catching Up With The Crooks

Thanks to the Office of the Inspector General, the U.S. Attorney General, the Department of Justice and others, those who try to steal from veterans or hurt them are eventually caught and sent to prison.

A fiduciary in Oregon was convicted of multiple counts of criminal mistreatment, aggravated theft, money laundering and tax evasion after she stole money from 26 disabled veterans. As a fiduciary, she was responsible for the management of the veterans’ money. Instead she snagged checks meant for others and deposited them, and when a client died, she took all the remaining money. She even used $30,000 belonging to one veteran to pay off court-ordered restitution after she defrauded two other clients. For this she was sentenced to only 48 months in prison.

In Maine, a UPS customer-service rep grabbed packages containing narcotic prescriptions that had been sent from the VA medical center in Togus, Maine. For this she could get a maxium of 36 months in prison.

In Boston, a crook tried to cash in on the special benefits of the Service Disabled VeteranOwned Small Business Program by recruiting a disabled veteran to act as straw man on all the paperwork and pose as the owner. He managed to get over $110 million in federal contracts.

But the worst by far was the male nurse in the VA medical center in Albany, N.Y. He was accused and found guilty of stealing painkillers from veterans on the hospice ward. Instead of administering the prescribed oxycodone hydrochloride (a serious painkiller), he gave them Haloperidol (aka Haldol), which is an anti-psychotic drug for mood disorders. To feed his own addiction, he replaced the painkillers in the syringes with the other medication, which gave the patients no relief from pain whatsoever. For his selfish and horribly egregious crime, he was only given a prison sentence of 82 months. Not nearly enough, in my opinion. ***

Adult Day Services

The business of adult day care services has grown rapidly in recent years. According to the National Adult Day Services Association, there are around 5,700 programs operating in the United States today.

As the name implies, adult day care provides care for elderly seniors who cannot care for themselves at home. While services will vary from center to center, they typically provide personal care, meals and snacks, various activities and social interaction in a safe supportive environment. Additionally, many centers also provide health services such as medication management, various therapies, exercise and transportation to and from the facility.

Adult day care centers generally operate programs during normal business hours five days a week. However, some centers may offer services in the evenings and on weekends, too.

Her eyes are closed, and she has black eyelashes. My friend has a collection of cat figurines, and this is one I have always admired. She told me the figurine is called “Jezebel.”

Sascha Brastoff Dinnerware Inspires Collector Q:

Enclosed is a photo of a set of dinner ware I own. It is a large collection of Sascha Brastoff dishes with the “Surf Ballet” turquoise and platinum pattern. I bought the set for $425 at a Habitat for Humanity ReStore and am planning to design the color scheme for my new kitchen around these beautiful, unique dishes. Brastoff also made the Surf Ballet dishes in pink, black and white; the turquoise and platinum color scheme is rare and usually only found in single pieces rather than a complete dinnerware set. I have nine full place settings, which include dinner plates, salad plates, cups, saucers, soup bowls, dessert bowls and dessert plates. I have 89 dishes altogether. With the exception of one bowl that has a chip, the set is in pristine condition.

Einstein was a genius who had this theory about space and time. I’m not a physicist, nor am I a genius, but his theory of relativity said that there is a fabric that surrounds us in which things appear to move faster when you observe them standing still.

Whatever ... all I know is that the legendary Tennessee Volunteer head coach, Pat Summitt, the winningest division 1 basketball coach of all time, had her own theory, and it went like this: “Here’s how I’m going to beat you. I’m going to outwork you. That’s it. That’s all there is to it.”

Could there possibly be a better quote from a coach ever? All respect to Vince Lombardi and John Wooden, but this lady Vol didn’t write three books, win 1,098 games, 8 national championships, a gold medal and participate in 22 Final Fours without picking up a few ideas.

She was famous for dressing down any male coach that dared to ask her for advice about coaching girls. “Coach basketball,” she would say.

And she said a whole lot more. To wit:

“Success is a project that is always under construction.”

“If you don’t admit a mistake and take responsibility for it, you’re bound to make the mistake again.”

“Attitude is a choice. Think positive thoughts daily. Believe in yourself.”

Sascha Brastoff opened his pottery studio in 1947.

A:

American designer and artist Sascha Brastoff was raised in Cleveland, Ohio. He studied at the Western Reserve School of Art. After serving in the army during World War II he opened a ceramic studio in Los Angles in 1947. His Surf Ballet dinnerware was produced in the 1950s and 60s, and it exemplified mid-century modern design.

Each piece was decorated with a matte marbleized glaze that had a slight metallic appearance. Brastoff left his company in 1962, but his wares were still produced under his name until 1973. He died

In the end, the end came too soon for Pat Summitt, robbed of her brilliant mind, taken by that insidious disease named after Aloysius Alzheimer.

She was only 64.

How can you fill such a great chasm? The fact is, you do not. You reflect on that loss, you remember what she stood for.

Pat Summitt had a pretty good way of summing up her final days, too.
