• In the late 1980s, scientists in Florida scattered food pellets to attract fish to a specific spot in a bay. A great blue heron watched these proceedings and discovered that if it hung out nearby, it could feast on the fish that came up for the pellets. After several days, either the fish got wise or they had all been eaten because they stopped coming to eat the pellets.

Scientists were astounded to see the heron pick up a pellet in its beak, take it a short distance down the shore, drop it in the water, and nab a fish that surfaced.

• A man in Washington once tossed crackers to a raven until the raven was full and could eat no more. The raven wanted to take the remaining crackers to its cache, but it could pick up only one cracker at a time in its beak. It reasoned that by the time it got back to collect the next cracker, other critters would have stolen the rest of the food. The man was astonished to see the raven solve the dilemma by tucking the crackers side by side into a snowbank one at a time. When several crackers were lined up together, the raven was able to pick them all up at one time and fly off with the entire stack.

• When a windstorm blew down the netting that enclosed the New York Zoological Society’s gigantic aviary in the 1960s, zookeepers captured as many of the remaining birds as they could, but left the netting open. Within the next few days, nearly 75% of the escaped birds had returned home on their own.

• King Henry VIII had a pet parrot that one day fell unnoticed into the Thames River. It was rescued only because it raucously squawked, “Boat! Boat!”

CHICKADEE FACTS

• Chickadees hide seeds in holes in trees where they will stay safe until retrieved and eaten.

One researcher wanted to test the memory of chickadees, so he arranged a forest of artificial trees. Each tree had holes, and each hole had a small door which could either be open or closed.

He gave his experimental chickadees some sunflower seeds to store when all the doors were opened. He watched where they stashed the seeds, then caged all the birds in a different location. He removed all the seeds, then closed and cleaned every door— whether or not it had contained seeds. This way all the holes looked and smelled the same. Then he let the birds back in. The birds invariably searched the holes where they had stashed seeds 24 hours earlier.

They opened only the little doors where their seeds were located, ignoring the holes where none had been placed.

• For his next experiment, he set out to see if they could remember the holes they had already visited. After storing the seeds, he removed the birds from the aviary and didn’t let them back in for 24 hours. He gave them enough time to visit half of the holes to retrieve their seeds, then removed them again. 24 hours later he allowed them in a second time, this time with all the doors closed once again and all the remaining seeds removed. Still, the chickadees went back to each hole that had once contained seeds, but didn’t bother returning to the holes they had visited the previous day. The test proved the theory that the memory of a chickadee is very good indeed. 

* It was early 20th-century Irish author Robert Wilson Lynd who made the following sage observation: “The belief in the possibility of a short decisive war appears to be one of the most ancient and dangerous of human illusions.” * If you find yourself with a dull pair of scissors, try this trick: Fold a piece of sandpaper in half, rough side out, and make repeated cuts until the blades are sharp again. * In 1980, 16 Danish seamen issued a Mayday call and abandoned their sinking ship, leaping into the frigid waters of the North Sea. Despite the fact that the water of the North Sea is so cold that it can kill a person in half an hour, all 16 sailors, who all were wearing life jackets, survived three times that long, and all were alive when rescuers arrived 90 minutes later.

The sailors were immediately taken below decks on the rescue ship, wrapped in blankets and given warm drinks. Seems like a happy ending, doesn’t it? Nope. After reaching supposed safety, all 16 of the rescued sailors suddenly dropped dead. * The word “infant” is derived from the Latin word “infans,” which means “unable to speak.” * If you’re a pet owner, you probably know that the epidemic of obesity is not limited to humans; many pets are overweight, too. You might be surprised to learn, though, that some pet owners choose to deal with the problem in a way that we usually associate only with people: liposuction. Yes, you can get cosmetic surgery for your pets. * Those who study such things say that in Norway, there are 1,800 lakes that have no fish at all. *** Thought for the Day: “I was a late bloomer. weight is to forget about calorie counting and weekly weigh-ins. Instead, he says, we need to focus on where, why and how we eat. In other words, we need to focus on where, why and how clutter builds in our home. Clutter negatively affects our ability to lead a full and healthy life.

COST: PEACE AND QUIET. It has been said that clutter is mental noise. What a perfect description. For me, clutter is a near-audible noise, too. The greater the mess, the louder the noise. And the noise is not harmonious. I would characterize the noise of clutter as a cacophony, a dissonance more annoying than fingernails on a chalkboard.

COST: WASTEFULNESS. Clutter, disorganization, domestic chaos -- these are conditions that foster wastefulness. I’m talking about the food that spoiled because the refrigerator was in such turmoil that no one knew the pricey fruits and vegetables were stuck way in the back. And that’s just the tip of the waste iceberg.

Disorder isn’t created overnight, and neither is order. Organization takes time, so start now. * * *

But the following letter from a reader explains better than I could the perils of dog parks, where all things are not equal:

“I got my Chihuahua-Lhasa Apso mix when he was 4 months old. He was my first dog as an adult, and I was very devoted to him. I walked him twice a day, taught him many tricks, including roll over, shake and beg, and took him to the doggy park twice a week.

“I had discovered a new doggy park close to my home, and we’d gone there four times. I took him last week, and within minutes of our arrival, he playfully approached a pit-terrier mix that was lying down with a ball in his mouth. I was about 30 feet away, and their playing quickly turned into a fight.

The other dog’s owner, who was right next to them, started to hit her dog with a ball catcher, and as I was running over to them, she finally grabbed her dog and pulled him off of mine. He had my dog by the back and was shaking him. We’re talking a difference of at least 40 pounds between the two dogs.

“There were no puncture wounds, but he had two swollen masses, golf-ball size, on the side of his back. He bit me for the first time ever when I picked him up, as I’m sure I was unknowingly causing more pain to his wounds. I took him to the emergency vet an hour later, and they diagnosed him as having hernias. I paid for the surgery and said goodbye to my sweet boy, expecting to pick him up at 6 p.m. the next day.

“I got home about 1 a.m. and received a phone call at 5 a.m. reporting that he was in surgery and it was much worse than expected -- he had two broken ribs, with damaged intestines, pancreas and kidneys. His chances were 50/50 with two weeks’ recovery time minimum. We were talking $5,000 to $10,000 more than what I had already paid. So I opted to put him down.

“I’m just devastated by this and am wondering what I could have done differently to save him.

It isn’t an “all or nothing” situation.

You will lose some of your anticipated bonus, but not all of it. As I explained at the beginning of this column, you get a delayed retirement credit equal to two-thirds of one percent for each month you delay taking benefits after age 66. So if you file at age 68, you will get 24 months’ worth of credits, or about 16 percent, added to your full retirement rate.

I started my Social Security benefits when I was 70. I am getting $2,970 per month. My wife is 66 and never worked outside the home. So she is supposed to get half of my Social Security, or $1,485. But she is getting about $300 less than that. What is going on?

A:

Q:

People who delay starting their Social Security beyond their full retirement age (currently age 66) get a bonus equal to two-thirds of one percent added to their monthly Social Security checks for each month they wait to begin benefits. That comes out to a 32 percent if they wait until age 70. (There is no bonus added after age 70.)

The rules regarding this bonus cause lots of confusion with seniors. Today’s questions come from folks who are having trouble understanding this issue.

FYI: Even though I refer to this procedure as a delayed retirement “bonus,” (because, frankly, that’s what it is), the actual term the Social Security Administration uses for the same provision is “delayed retirement credits.” So if you are talking to an SSA rep about this, use their terminology.

I am about to turn 68 years old. I was planning to wait until age 70 to apply for my Social Security. But some family financial issues are causing me to rethink that plan. I

This is one of the Social Security provisions I’ve never understood. So I can explain it to people, but I can’t give the rationale behind the rule. And what that rule says is that a wife does not share in the delayed retirement bonus added to a retiree’s Social Security check. Her rate is based on your full retirement age benefit, not on the bonus-augmented Social Security rate you are actually getting.

Using my little desktop calculator, I’m guessing your full retirement age benefit rate is about $2,250. And half of that is $1,125, and I’ll bet that is what your wife is correctly getting from your Social Security account.

That’s the bad news. But pay attention to the answer to the next question for a bit of good news.

I turned 69 in March 2016 and that is when I applied for my Social Security. I was expecting to get a 24 percent bonus added to my Social Security checks. But it was slightly less than that. When I called the Social Security people to ask why, they couldn’t explain it to me. They said it might be a “computer glitch.” Do you know what is going on?

A:

It’s not really a computer glitch, but just a bit of an anomaly in the way these delayed retirement credits are doled out. You generally cannot get delayed retirement credits for a year until that year is over with. You said you were 69 in March of this year. If I am doing the math properly, that means you turned 66 in March 2013. So when applied for your benefits in March, they added in all the credits you were due for 2013, 2014, and 2015. But they can’t give you the delayed retirement credits for 2016 until next year. So sometime in 2017, you will get a little boost in your Social Security check to add in the credits you are due for those first couple of months this year.

This is a photo of the mark on the bottom of my Roseville Potter y vase. It was my mother’s. She gave it to me in the 1960s. It is rose-colored and shaped like a conch shell.

It measures approximately 6 inches long by 3 inches tall, and it is in mint condition.

One of my children would like to have it and wants to know more about its histor y, manufacturer, age and value.

What can you tell me about this child’s wagon? We think it has been in our family since the 1920s. The frame and body are made of wood. The wheels have wooden spokes with bands that attach them to the frame. It has a wooden handle. There is a bracket in front of the back right wheel. I wonder if it’s a brake mount. On the side of the wagon are the words “Hibbard Coaster Wagon.”

We would like to know the histor y and value of the wagon.

The Roseville Pottery Corp. was located in Zanesville, Ohio from 1900 to 1954. It was founded by George Young in 1892 in Roseville, Ohio, and then moved to Zanesville in 1900. Young’s goal was to make art-pottery lines that would outsell his established and successful competitors, Weller Pottery and Rookwood Pottery. Roseville Pottery launched its art line, Rozane, followed by the Azurean line in 1902. Both lines became extremely popular, and remain so today with collectors. Your vase is an example of the Water Lily pattern introduced in 1943, which was available in rose, ciel blue and walnut brown. The number “445-6” indicates the design number and the size.

Your vase would probably fetch $65 to $75 in an antique shop. * * *

I have enclosed a photo of the mark that is on a set of dishes that I have.

There are 16 dinner plates, 15 salad plates, 16 soup bowls, eight cups, 13 saucers, two sugar bowls with covers, two creamers, and one teapot. Each dish is decorated with multicolored flowers in the center and gold filigree design on the border. They are all in ver y good condition.

I believe the numbers on the mark "45-11" mean the dishes were produced in November 1945. I would like to know more information on the Knowles Co. and the approximate value of my dishes.

Hibbard toy wagons were made by the hardware enterprise Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co. This Chicago, Illinois company was in business from 1882 to 1962. At one time, the company worked out of a huge hardware store on State Street in downtown Chicago. It sold tools, cutlery, paints and toys. Hibbard wagons had hand brakes and ball-bearing wheels, which allowed the wagon to coast smoothly. The body was made with white ash and was available in three sizes. These wagons sold for around $10 to $12 in the early 1900s.
