The 100th Indianapolis 500 will be held this year on May 29th. No doubt you're familiar with this worldfamous racing event, but what do you know about its history and the venue itself? Follow along while Tidbits brings you up to speed!

• The Indianapolis Motor Speedway was the vision of Indianapolis businessman Carl Fisher, who first came up with the idea in 1905. Along with three partners, he purchased Pressley Farm, a 328-acre tract of level land about five miles outside of the city, for $72,000. Construction on the 2.5-mile oval track began in March, 1909.

• Five hundred workers, 300 mules, and a fleet of steam-powered machinery labored to groom and reshape the land. The track was graded and covered with packed soil, two inches of gravel, two inches of limestone, and coated with tar and oil. Another two inches of crushed stone chips were added with more tar and oil, and a final covering of crushed stone was laid down. Wooden grandstands with 12,000 seats were constructed to accommodate racing fans.

• At the time the Speedway was built, the average price of a new car was $1,280, and gas could be bought for six cents a gallon.

• A crab that manages to not find its way into a fisherman’s trap will live between eight and 13 years (although fiddler crabs live just two years.) Of all the creatures caught from the world’s bodies of water, 20 percent are crabs.

The average crab weighs about two pounds and is six inches long. About one-fourth of its weight is meat.

• About 1.5 million tons of crab are consumed by humans around the world each year. The Japanese Blue Crab is the most consumed.

The popular king crab is not even a true crab.

Because the rigid shell cannot grow or stretch, the creature must shed its skeleton and grow a new one. When it molts, a crack forms in the shell, and the crab backs out of it. Indy 500 (from page one) helium-filled balloon competition on June 5, 1909, more than two months before the oval track itself was completed. Some 40,000 spectators gathered to watch nine heliumfilled balloons lift into the skies in a “race” competition for trophies. Two months later a series of motorcycle races were held.

• The first car race was held that year on August 19th, and nearly 20,000 spectators paid up to a dollar per ticket to attend the track's official opening. The first race, a 250-mile event, included leader Louis Chevrolet, for whom an automobile brand would later be named.

• It soon became apparent that the track's surface was quickly becoming damaged with ruts and chuckholes. The track’s first fatality occurred in the first race, when a car flipped end over end before crashing into a fence post. Both the driver and his mechanic died on site. The third race of 300 miles resulted in three more deaths, after which all races and future events were immediately halted until safety improvements could be made to the track.

• Paving in 1909 was still relatively new, with only a few miles of public roads existing that weren't simply dirt or gravel, and little was known about what would work best. Traction tests conducted on bricks proved they could hold up, and the decision was made to use them.

• The repaving project began less than a month later. Five Indiana manufacturers supplied 3.2

At the same time, a three-foot-tall concrete wall was constructed in front of the main grandstand and around all four turns to protect spectators. • By the early 1930s as racing speeds increased, the track became increasingly dangerous.

In the period from 1931–1935 there were 15 fatalities, which caused a number of safety measures to be taken. Hard crash helmets for drivers became mandatory, and the first yellow light system was installed around the track. I was surprised to see your response regarding the question about Stana Katic leaving “Castle,” and that you didn’t mention that Stana is not just leaving, but was either fired or her contract wasn’t renewed.

I feel that was an unfortunate way to handle answering that question. They might as well just cancel the show than screw it up the way they are doing, and “Castle” fans are furious about this situation.

I and many others I know feel like good, well-written, well-acted shows get canceled, while embarrassing reality shows continue. A big part of my job is talking to people about their dogs. Now more than ever, many of those conversations require me to interject for the sake of clarification: “Wait, are you talking about your human child or your dog child?”

Take for example this recent letter from a reader:

“My puppy is very possessive of me. I am the primary parent. I also have two other dogs, and anytime they come near me, he runs over, jumps on me and barks at them until they leave.

This also is starting to apply to people: My husband can’t come near me, and he recently nipped at my 3-year-old niece. I want to break him of this jealous behavior but don’t know how. My husband says to smack him, but doesn’t that just compound the issue? Other than this, he is a very good boy and an absolute joy to have around.”

If we took a poll and aimed it at the “parents” of aggressive dogs, asking why they live with a dangerous dog, the results would make for a hearty denial soup:

-- He doesn’t mean it.

-- We shouldn’t disturb him.

-- He doesn’t do it all the time.

-- He was provoked.

And the knee-jerk reaction when faced with a shy, fearful or aggressive dog is: Abuse! This dog’s been abused!

Sadly, that is sometimes true. But personality traits are sown in a number of ways, many having nothing to do with abuse. Improper socialization or a lack thereof, defective genetics and even simply being the runt of a litter can tip a dog’s personality toward the timid end of the spectrum.

* Seniors generally would stay with the same health-care providers, who will get less money for the same services, probably 30 percent less. Those providers will continue to see existing patients because they’ll be dealing with volume in the number of patients.

of abuse is that people then believe that because a cruel human being caused the problem trait, a loving human being holds the power to reverse the effect. But all the love in the world is no match for the brute force of bad genes. Not even the love of a pet parent.

I recently talked with a young woman who just had a baby -- she’s highly educated and intelligent, with a very promising legal career ahead of her. She also lives with an aggressive dog and cannot bear the idea of losing him. I asked her what made the protection of her dog as or more important than the protection of her newborn child. She explained that she knows what it’s like to feel unloved and unwanted, and that she loves her dog and doesn’t want to give up on him -- adding that nothing and no one loves her as much as her dog.

That’s powerful stuff.

It may be true that some will never know another love like the love of a dog. But that doesn’t excuse bad judgment.

I spoke this week with another woman, whose dog is lunging at people and dogs, has to be walked with a muzzle on, and has already been quarantined by the health department once for biting someone. And she knew he was aggressive before she brought him home. The dog wasn’t trained when she adopted him and she hasn’t trained him since. She brought home a bundle of dynamite and exposed everyone to the danger. Now she wants to be able to take him to the dog park.

If a single person wants to live with a dangerous dog, that’s their choice. I can help modify the aggressive behavior and offer suggestions on how to create the best possible life. But there will be sacrifices. And the dog park is just one of many.

But pet parents who are also the parents of little humans are a different story -- one that can only have a happy ending if the parent protects the right child.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I read in a medical advice column that tea tree oil can help cure the nail fungus that I have had for more than 10 years on my big toe. It did dramatically reduce the inflammation around the nail, but the nail is unchanged, and the inflammation subsequently returns. Recently, though, I have seen or heard of several nail fungus treatments that do not present a danger of liver damage. Are there any new treatments for the nail fungus that actually are effective?

I own this old Philco table radio, and I have been tr ying to find out how much it is worth. It is their Model 37-60. I’ve had it for a ver y long time -- so long that I’ve forgotten where I got it or how much I paid for it. It is in excellent condition, and it is a ver y beautiful shape. It is also ver y heavy.

I have enclosed a photo of the logo that is on the pieces of a silver coffee set. The set has been in our family for generations. It includes a coffee pot, a cream pitcher and a sugar bowl with a lid. The coffee pot stands about 9 inches tall, and there is a finial on the coffee pot and sugar-bowl lid. The silver on ever y piece is in mint condition.

I plan to pass the set down to my daughter. Since no one in the family knows anything about its origin, age and value, I hope you can tell me about its histor y and its insurance value.

For the Love of Baseball

So my cousin -- a good kid, lives in Vegas, keeps his nose clean -- says to me, “You know ... I’d like baseball a whole lot better if they only played, like, 16 games in a season.

The season is just too long.”

I didn’t want to break up the party (I think it was a Christmas dinner, we were watching the Knicks midday, if that’s any clue), so I just threw out what I had immediately available to both refute and condemn his view on the national pastime.

“Well then,” I began, “In a 16-game season, how do you suppose a pitcher will put together a 20-win campaign? Who’s going to get 100 RBI in a season? Hit 60 homers?”

You see, in this “right now” world -where everyone has to have instant access to the goings-on of Arianna Grande at the doughnut shop, the latest bout of calamitous discourse from the presidential primaries, the latest late-night sketch -- all shown on your little phone or tablet screen, maybe the subtle nuances of a 162-game schedule are lost.

Baseball puts it all out there, and they do it for nearly half a year. In no American professional sport can you find such a rich timeline full of individual stories, vividly reported on day after day, during three seasonal climatic changes (spring, summer and fall). It’s the only sport that translates as well, if not better, on radio as it does on TV. In fact, some of my finest memories were of listening to the Yankees on WABC while my friends and I played Wiffleball in between bouts of delivering pizzas in Red Bank, New Jersey. Years later, I remember listening to Vin Scully being broadcast on a beach at Key West. People hung on his every word.

When Derek Jeter retired, for my parents and grandparents, it was a very dramatic event. For nearly two decades, when they wanted to unwind at night, they would put on the Yankee game. No, they weren’t always in rapt attention, but the game was always there.

When he left, it was as if they had lost a friend or sent a son off to college. If you think about what even a decade of baseball amounts to ... 16,000-plus evenings and days of programming, it is almost mind-boggling.

The storylines only keep getting better and more diverse thanks to expansion. More fans are more engaged than ever before. And of course, baseball venerates its champions better than any other sport. The record books still routinely spit up names like Nap Lajoie, Tris Speaker, Hack Wilson, Maury Wills and Catfish Hunter. No other sport comes close in that regard. More people can name the lineup of the 1927 Yankees than their own current favorite team. You can trace historical events -- civil rights, world wars, 9/11 -- through baseball.

• On a hot Memorial Day in 1936, threetime Indy 500 winner Louis Meyer drank a glass of buttermilk in Victory Lane after his win. Officials of the local Milk Foundation saw a picture of his celebratory toast in the newspaper and immediately recognized a rare PR opportunity to promote their milk products.

The practice became a tradition, and every winner is now presented a glass quart bottle of milk after the race. It’s no surprise that today the American Dairy Association is a regular sponsor of the Indy 500.

• The traditional phrase, “Gentlemen, start your engines!” prior to the race has been around since the early 1950s. Wilbur Shaw, a three-time Indy winner became president of the Speedway in 1945, and is believed to have coined the phrase. When women drivers are part of the line-up, the phrase has been altered to, “Ladies and Gentlemen, start your engines!” If there’s been a rain delay, occasionally it's modified to “Restart your engines!”

• Since its inception over a century ago, the Speedway has seen dozens of major changes.

The track itself has been modified and repaved numerous times, the stands have been rebuilt, remodeled and enlarged several times over including plush viewing suites. Museums and numerous other visitor attractions have been added, and its original 328 acres has almost doubled in size to 560. The Indy 500 proudly ranks today as one of the most prestigious motorsports events in the world. 
