• Because it’s estimated that there are fewer than 10,000 adult red pandas remaining, it’s classified an endangered species. While hunting is illegal in most places, in southwest China, they are hunted for their fur, particularly the bushy tails, from which hats are created. The tails and hides are frequently part of weddings, as bridegrooms traditionally carry the hide, and panda tail hats are considered good-luck charms for newlyweds. • It was the dream of Edgar Helms’ parents that he live his life on the Iowa family farm, but Edgar had a dream for a greater cause.

Feeling a call to devote his life to the church and helping others, he enrolled in Cornell College, and later Boston University, earning a Bachelors Degree of Sacred Theology. His excellent academic achievements earned him a fellowship to London to study the povertystricken neighborhoods there, with the dream of doing missionary work in India afterward.

• Helms was disappointed to learn that he was not being sent to India after all, but instead to a Methodist church in one of Boston’s poorest immigrant areas. Morgan Hill Chapel, situated in one of America’s worst slums, was surrounded by drug addicts, thieves, gamblers, prostitutes, and every type of criminal. Helms and his wife established a settlement house, a haven for immigrants which provided a nursery, a gymnasium, recreational activities, English classes, and other services to help the immigrants settle into their new life.

The following letter from a reader demonstrates that it is certainly the chief occupation of those who champion the companionship of a particular canine at any cost.

“We recently got an 8-month-old yellow lab from a family with three small children. The lady said the dog could be aggressive and had nipped at her 2-year-old.

“She is a very nervous puppy -- jumps at the slightest movement or noise. She also jumps and twitches when she sleeps. We have experienced her aggression now, and it is quite scary. The second morning we had her, something spooked her and she would not let us near our truck. The doors were all open, and she sat in the driver’s seat growling and showing her teeth. I got a treat and put it on the ground near us. When I said “release,” she got out, snatched the treat and jumped right back in. She calmed down, but was nervous all day after that.

“She has showed her teeth a few times, and we’re not sure how to handle it. I read that it isn’t always good to approach or discipline her when she is showing her teeth and growling because it could initiate an attack. I know that she is scared and confused. Within one week she stayed in four different houses, with all new people. We’ve had her for a week, and we’d love to keep her. We have no children, but we have nieces and nephews around often. We need to break her of these aggressive behaviors or we will not be able to run the risk of her hurting a child.

“She is a good dog -- excellent when playing fetch, gives up the ball or toy every time. However, she gets aggressive with some of her toys when indoors. We gave her a pig’s ear last night and she got extremely aggressive. Every time we moved, she growled and showed her teeth -- even when we were nowhere near her. She came out of it, but again she was nervous for the rest of the night.”

Did John Lennon do us all in when he wrote “All You Need is Love”? The decades that have transpired since that release have taught me that this, like so many other missives of the 1960s, does not literally apply to everyday life.

When it comes to aggressive dogs, you need more than love. You need an excess of time, an arsenal of experience and technique, and a backup plan for that moment when you realize some things can’t be fixed. Now what?

This dog requires professional help and, as is, cannot be around children. Her aggression is trifold: She’s possessive, territorial and fearful. It’s like living with a three-headed rattlesnake, and, as the Roman satirist Horace put it, “as crazy as hauling timber into the woods.”

Dear Linda: When it comes to choosing a cane for balance and support most people don’t give it much thought, but they should. Walking canes come in hundreds of different styles, shapes and sizes today, so you need to take into account your needs and preferences to ensure you choose one that’s appropriate for you. Here are some tips that can help.

Types of Canes:

The first thing you need to consider is how much support you need. That will help you determine the kind of cane you choose. The three basic types of canes you’ll have to choose from include: 1. Straight canes: These are basic, single point canes that typically incorporate a rounded “crook” handle or “L-shaped” ergonomic handle.

Usually made of lightweight aluminum or wood, most of the aluminum models are adjustable in height and some even fold up.

2. Offset-handle canes: These also are single point straight canes, but come with a swan neck curve in the upper part of the shaft that puts the user’s weight directly over the cane tip for added stability. These canes are typically aluminum, adjustable-height and come with a flat, soft grip handle that’s easy on the hands.

The grip is also very important, so choose one that’s ergonomically designed, or one that has a molded rubber or foam grip that’s comfortable to hold on to.

And if you travel much, consider getting a folding cane that can be packed or stored away easily.

How to Use:

When using a cane, it should always be held in the hand opposite of the leg that needs support. For example, if your knee pain is on your left side, you should use the cane in your right hand. The cane should then move forward as you step forward with the bad leg.

If you have to go up stairs, you should lead with the good leg. And when you go down stairs, you should put your cane on the step first and then step down with your bad leg.

VA’s New Centralized Archives

The Department of Veterans Affairs announced recently that the Dayton VA Medical Center will be the new site for the National Department of Veterans Affairs Archives. The plan is to renovate two existing buildings, built in 1871 and 1881.

Ideally they will completely gut the old buildings and start fresh, with fire safety a big consideration.

Anyone who has requested military records from the National Archives’ National Personnel Record Center in St. Louis and been told that the records burned up in the 1973 fire will appreciate that sentiment.

The fire damaged or destroyed as many as 18 million Army and Air Force records. In the aftermath, it ordered that records from around the country not be destroyed anymore, since they could be used to piece together the history of veterans who apply for benefits or for future generations doing genealogy.

Now the VA is trying to get all records from all sources digitized. Different branches have different methods of producing records, and not all are digitized.

Some historic records and artifacts are stored at National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, D.C. Others are scattered at 150 facilities around the country. The plan to centralize all of it is theoretically a good one.

However, until the VA has caught up on all current records requests, any plans to centralize historical documents and objects should be put on hold until all records are digitized.

Meanwhile, make a copy (paper and digital) of every single piece of paper you have pertaining to your military service. Make a list of dates, locations and personnel who served with you. Put it in a bank safe deposit box. You never know when it will be needed.

I have enclosed a photo of the mark that is on the back of a small cast-iron skillet I own. It belonged to my great-grandmother.

Near the mark are the words “Erie - Pa. U.S.A. -- No 3.” The skillet dimensions are approximately 7 inches in diameter and 1.25 inches deep. I am the fourth generation to use it and I plan to pass it down to my daughter. It is perfect for making one or two eggs.

Ladies of Leisure Loved China Painting

This is a photo of several pieces of Bavarian porcelain dishes that my grandmother hand-painted between 1900 and 1903.

She took china-painting classes, and the dishes were fired three times at the school’s kiln.

In the three years that she attended classes, she painted a complete set for twelve people that included 135 pieces.
