• As nocturnal animals, bats sleep during the day, hanging upside down from trees or from the roofs of caves, gripping with their sharp claws.

On the hunt at night, they might fly 30 miles to locate food, which they can locate in total darkness. They find insects by emitting highpitched sounds, 10 to 20 beeps per second and listening for echoes. The bat has a very long tongue for feeding, which it wraps around its rib cage when not in use.

While some mammals, such as the flying squirrel, have the ability to glide, the bat is the only mammal capable of continued flight. The wing membranes make up about 95% of the bat’s body surface area.

• Many bats have a long life span, including the

brown bat that can live nearly 40 years.

• A colony of bats usually varies in size from 100 to 1,000 bats. The largest known bat colony in the world is in Texas’ Bracken Bat Cave, where more than 20 million bats live. When large groups exit the cave en masse, their size is so large it resembles a gigantic storm on radar.

In November of 1971, Dan Cooper, having paid $18.52 for a ticket, boarded a Boeing 727 on Northwest Airlines Flight 305 in Portland, Oregon, along with 36 others, bound for Seattle.

boarded and gave him the bag of cash and the four parachutes he had demanded. He then ordered the pilot to fly him to Mexico, flying “low and slow” and to leave the aft cargo door unlocked. Five Air Force fighter planes closely tailed the jet, but not one of the pilots witnessed Cooper’s jump into the dark and rainy night somewhere between Seattle and Reno, Nevada.

Dear Savvy Senior: Are there any services that you know of that help families resolve caregiving conflicts? My mother – who just turned 82 – recently had a stroke, and to make matters worse, my two siblings and I have been perpetually arguing about how to handle her caregiving needs and finances.

Dear Bickering: It’s not unusual when adult children disagree with each other regarding the care of an elder parent. If your siblings are willing, a good possible solution is to hire an “elder care mediator” who can help you work through your disagreements peacefully. Here’s what you should know.

Elder Mediation:

While mediators have been used for years to help divorcing couples sort out legal and financial disagreements and avoid court battles, elder care mediation is a relatively new and specialized service designed to help families resolve disputes that are related to aging parents or other elderly relatives.

Family disagreements over an ill or elderly parent’s caregiving needs, living arrangements, financial decisions and medical care are some of the

The job of an elder mediator is to step in as a neutral third party to help ease family tensions, listen to everyone’s concerns, hash out disagreements and misunderstandings, and help your family make decisions that are acceptable to everyone.

Good mediators can also assist your family in identifying experts such as estate-planners, geriatric care managers, or health care or financial professionals who can supply important information for family decision making.

Unfortunately, there is currently no formal licensing or national credentialing required for elder mediators, so make sure the person you choose has extensive experience with elder issues that are similar to what your family is dealing with. Also, be sure you ask for references and check them. Most elder mediators are attorneys, social workers, counselors or other professionals who are trained in mediation and conflict resolution.

I have enclosed the mark that is on the rims of the glass shades of an electric antique chandelier that belonged to my father. It was in an old home that was being torn down in the early 1960s. The owner wasn’t interested in it, and when my dad admired it, he said, “Take it. It’s yours.” It’s been stored in a big box in the cellar all these years. We found it after my dad passed away. Now we are curious about its histor y. It has five hanging iridescent glass shades that are bell-shaped and in excellent condition.

I’ve searched the Internet and cannot find a rocking chair like the one in this picture. I’m hoping you can help me. My father was born in 1896 and said he was rocked in this chair when he was a baby, so it must be really old. Three generations of our family have been rocked in the chair. The arms and seat are all original, but some parts on the rockers and the lower stretchers have been replaced.
