Most of his accomplishments are not common knowledge, though -- and they deserve to be. Born into poverty on the Caribbean island of Nevis, the illegitimate son of a Scots merchant, Hamilton began work as a clerk at the age of 11. His employers were so impressed with his intelligence that they paid for him to attend school in America, where he became involved in revolutionary politics. He was a lieutenant colonel by the age of 20 and managed to marry into one of the most distinguished families in New York. In addition to writing most of the Federalist Papers, Hamilton founded the New York Post, the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Mint.

• In the late 1800s a magazine called “The Youth’s Companion” was very popular. Editor James Upman promoted education tirelessly and instigated a program of premiums for subscribers. The prizes included such things as patriotic posters, historical books, and especially American flags. He began a concerted campaign encouraging all schools to install American flags, and he sold them the flags.

• In 1892 Upman was preoccupied with the 400th anniversary of the arrival of Columbus in the New World. He wanted a nationwide celebration on that day to underscore his belief that the American system of free universal education was the wellspring of the country’s success.

He asked Francis Bellamy, who worked for the National Education Association, to help him create a program for schools for the Columbus Day event.

• Bellamy wrote a speech, devised a flag-raising ceremony, and penned a simple creed that school children could recite in unison as the flag was raised before morning classes began. The pledge that Bellamy wrote was short so that even the youngest of schoolchildren would be able to memorize it. These details were published in the September edition of the magazine.

• On October 12, 1892, millions of children all over the United States recited this creed while saluting the flags. Thus began a tradition. In 1942 Congress recognized the creed as the official national pledge of the U.S., now called the Pledge of Allegiance.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been diagnosed with essential tremor. Propranolol 10 mg has not helped. Sometimes I can write and eat with no shaking, but other times the shaking is so bad that the food falls off the fork or I cannot read my printing or writing.

If I drink a beer, it seems to relax me enough that in five minutes I can write or eat quite normally nearly ever y time. I’ve been told that it doesn’t appear to be Parkinson’s.

Any suggestions will be enormously appreciated. -- J.N. ANSWER: Essential tremor, sometimes called benign familial tremor, is common. Often, one has a family history of tremor. It is not Parkinson’s disease; however, it isn’t always “benign” in that, for some people, it can be disabling, preventing a person from not only writing, but, as in your case, activities of daily living such as eating.

Alcohol has long been known to reduce the tremor temporarily, but it must be taken cautiously, since regular use will diminish its effectiveness, requiring higher doses for effectiveness -- and, as I have written many times, excess alcohol is a major cause of many medical problems.

Occasional use with meals is reasonable.

Other effective treatments for essential tremor include anti-epilepsy medications such as primidone, gabapentin and topiramate. Unfortunately, all of these can have side effects, so they are best prescribed by an expert, such as a neurologist who specializes in movement disorders.

For serious essential tremor that is not responsive to medications, deep brain stimulation (via electrodes placed surgically) is effective. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: My mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2009, and she is taking Namenda and Aricept to help slow the advancement of the disease.

I am writing because she complains of being cold all the time. She and my father keep the temperature in their house at 80 degrees, and my mother wears winter clothes, a coat and a blanket in the house.

She sometimes sweats through the clothes, but we can’t persuade her to remove any layers. The house is uncomfortably hot for anyone else, and yet she says she is cold.

Depending on your age, health, and the provisions of the policy, costs can range anywhere from $1,000 up to $5,000 a year for an individual policy that covers nursing home care, assisted living and in-home care. Fortunately, there are various cost-cutting strategies that can help you save and still get adequate coverage. Here are several to consider.

Choice Needs Fixes

Lengthen the time you pay: Most policies have 30 to 90-day waiting periods that require you to pay out-of-pocket for care before the policy kicks in. By choosing a longer wait period, it can lower your premiums 15 to 20 percent.

The Choice program, designed to get quicker medical appointments for veterans at civilian doctors, is a big mess. Changes were made recently to driving distances, delayed appointments at a Department of Veterans Affairs facility, difficulty in reaching appointments due to physical condition, and more, to make it easier for veterans to get care.

But there is a snag: Health Net Federal Services.

Health Net was hired to make appointments. A veteran can’t just call the doctor to make an appointment and have the VA pay the bill. No, this intermediary will make the appointment -eventually. (In New England, there is only one person for the whole region to set up the provider network.)

Health Net must make the appointments within the allotted period, but that doesn’t always happen. Health Net is required to call the correct type of doctor that the veteran needs, which doesn’t always happen either.

Health Net processes the bills for the civilian medical providers -- eventually. One large medical provider in New England announced that not only was it owed a lot of money, but the burdens of being a Choice provider were just too much to deal with. Veterans are reporting that they’re receiving bills that should have been paid.

Help, or at least disclosure, might be coming soon in the form of a Government Accounting Office audit, requested by some members of Congress.

I have enclosed the mark that is on the bottom of a potter y vase that I have. I bought it at an antiques shop years ago because the glaze appealed to me. I have no idea what I paid for it so many years ago. It has been sitting and forgotten in the back of a china cabinet for years. My daughter saw it and asked about it. I think she would like to have it. It is decorated with a metallic iridescent glaze that is a blend of green, purple and blue in a swirling pattern.

Anything you can tell me about its histor y will be appreciated.

Weller Pottery was located in Zanesville, Ohio.

Enclosed is a photo of a porcelain Hummel figurine that was my mother’s.

She was born in Germany, and when she went back to visit her family her sister gave her the figurine. It stands about 5 inches tall and is marked on the bottom with the words “Goebel -- W. Germany.” On the backside of the base are the words “Puppy Love” along with the German words “Geigerlein mit Hund.” The German words mean “Fiddler with Dog.”

I would never part with my figurine. It is a family treasure and I would like to know its value since I plan to include it in my insurance.

The “Goebel -- W. Germany” mark was first used in 1979 and is the Hummel trademark number seven. Your figurine was molded by Goebel artist, Arthur Moelle, in 1935. It was only made in the five inches tall size and the mold was retired in 1988.

Your vase was made by Weller Pottery in Zanesville, Ohio. It is an example of their Sicardo line that was the creation of Weller’s French ceramist, Jacques Sicard, around 1902. According to Weller history, there was a mantle of mystery that veiled the glaze process. Sicard and his assistant worked behind closed doors and only spoke in a French-Swiss dialect. They conducted a daily morning visual sweep of the laboratory walls to assure there were no peepholes for anyone to peek into.

Some believe they went to such extreme measures because they were concerned that, if Sam Weller learned their secret process, they would end up dismissed, as was one of their predecessors.

Your vase was made around 1902 and would probably be worth $550 to $600.

What’s Going On? (Make Me Wanna Holler)

I wrote a simple column last week about Peyton Manning, and this week I write an even simpler one.

Last week I shared how I first met Manning (behind the Colts’ bench during the first half of a game versus the Falcons, in a place I was not allowed to be, taking red-eye reduction flash pictures with my trusty Minolta). Also, I opined that he was one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time ... top 10 for sure. He is the QB with the most wins ever, the only QB to win Super Bowls for two different teams, and he holds a host of other passing records that usually surpass QBs with names like Brett Favre and Dan Marino. You get the point.

Even though Manning failed to provide a stellar performance during Super Bowl 50, he grabbed most of the limelight when Denver’s defense deserved more (and as an aside ... if Denver was the home team, why did they opt for the all-white uniforms? How do you not go with the “Orange Crush” unis?). Manning managed to suck all the air out of the room anyway.

It happened just like we knew it would.

You could run a soundtrack of Howard Cossell, Bill Grigsby, Pat Summerall, Keith Jackson and all the rest of the great legends who once graced the NFL broadcast booth. Win or lose, Peyton Manning, his arm on a string, the aging legend in perhaps the final game of his career.

Will he retire on top? Will he go to the Los Angeles Rams and reintroduce football to the trafficaddled city of angels for trillions of dollars? Will he jump into the booth?

Most importantly, will he figure out how to deal with the story that has him sexually harassing a Tennessee trainer during his college tenure? A story that has all but robbed him of any extra glory he was entitled to for his feats on the field?

Here’s my simple conclusion, so easy to understand that even a caveman would grasp it: Stop abusing women.

Manning has already admitted to some manner of vulgar action in the incident that happened a quarter century ago. The story came back to haunt him at the worst possible time, as often happens in life when you think you’re on top of the world. The world is like a pot of crabs ... there will always be those that want to drag you down.

The solution is simple: apologize. Own it.

Give the woman another million or whatever it is she wants if you’re guilty enough. You made a bad decision, now move on.
