• Lapin worked with other tinkerers in order to design a tin can, pressurized with nitrous oxide, which would dispense real cream in the form of whipped cream using an aerosol nozzle. He fiddled with the design of the nozzle until he had a perfect and unique tip that would dispense only the whipped cream without allowing any of the nitrous oxide to escape. Then he improved the nozzle design so it would dispense the whipped cream in flowery patterns.

They made glass objects that were traded around the world by Venetian merchants. After a few disastrous fires, the city leaders in 1291 ordered all of the glassmaking operations out of Venice to the nearby island of Murano, about a mile away.

• When the glassmakers found themselves gathered together on a small island, it created an environment that allowed easy exchanges of information and techniques, which led to a burst of creativity and innovation. Murano became known as the Isle of Glass, and remains so today.

My Advice: Get a Voodoo Doll or Marry an Old Goat!

Q:

I am 64 years old. I was married to a man who was 15 years younger than me.

He was a lawyer and made really good money.

I married him for love. I’m really not sure why he married me. Anyway, we got divorced a few years ago. And now that I’m pushing Social Security age, I realize what a big mistake I made. He told me he plans to work until he is 70. My own Social Security benefit is ver y small -- about $300. And the Social Security people told me I can’t get any benefits from my ex until he files for benefits. My goodness, I will be almost 85. What advice do you have for me?

A: Well, I hope your young husband was

worth it in other ways! Because he is totally worthless to you from a Social Security perspective, at least for a long time to come. So I’ve got two bits of advice. First, you could stick pins in a voodoo doll representing your ex and wish him bad luck in the health department. Or you could marry the first old goat you can find. Better yet, make that an old goat with one of his hooves already halfway in the grave! Now let me explain.

Usually a wife can’t get benefits on her husband’s Social Security record until he is getting benefits himself. If that is what the Social Security people told you, they were a little bit off because the law gives a bit of a break to divorced women.

You don’t have to wait until he is collecting benefits.

You can get spousal benefits on his account as soon as he is old enough for Social Security. And that would be age 62. But that is still a long way off. So again, you can forget about getting any of his Social Security unless...!

Unless what you may wonder? Unless he dies. Then you would be due widow’s benefits immediately. That’s why I suggested the voodoo doll.

But if you’re a nice person and don’t want to wish your ex any ill will, then we can move on to my second bit of advice -- the old goat!

If you remarry, you could get spousal benefits from your new husband -- assuming you don’t make the same mistake again and marry a younger guy. That’s why I suggested the old goat -- someone who is already getting Social Security. You would have to wait a year to get benefits on his record.

(The law says you must be married for 12 months to qualify for spousal benefits.) But that sure is better than waiting for 13 more years until your first husband turns age 62.

And if you happen to find an old goat with health problems, then you’d qualify for much higher widow’s benefits after he dies. (A spousal rate is capped at 50 percent, whereas a widow can get up to 100 percent of her husband’s Social Security.)

And the advantage to being an unmarried widow is that when your rich first husband turns 62, you might be due divorced wife’s benefits on his account if they exceed whatever you are getting from husband No. 2. And you certainly would get higher widow’s benefits on his record if he should happen to die before you do.

Having given you those ideas (with my

tongue planted firmly in my cheek), you could go out and find a nice healthy young man and marry for love. But look where that got you the first time around!

Q:

I am about to turn 66 and am tr y ing to decide what to do with my Social Security. I hope you can help. My husband is 68.

He started his benefits at 66 and gets $2,178 per month. My projected full benefit is much less -- only about $400. Friends have told me that I should delay starting my Social Security until I’m 70. And they told me I could take benefits on his record in the meantime. Do you think I should do that?

Founded in 1927 in East Liverpool, Ohio, Porcelier China Co. moved to South Greenberg, Pa., in 1931. They produced vitrified china teapots, coffeepots, electric coffeepots, cups, saucers, creamers and sugar bowls. Vitrified china is fired at a high temperature.

The shape of your coffeepot was inspired by Art Deco design. Their Southwestern pattern, which was a popular motif in the 1920s and 1930s, had several variations of a figure with a sombrero and a serape next to a cactus. Your coffeepot was originally part of a set that included a teapot, creamer and sugar bowl.

Glass (from page 3) showed that fiberglass on its own is extremely versatile and useful, and when combined with plastics and other resins, it can be used for thousands more applications. By the time Charles Boys died in 1944, fiberglass was everywhere: insulation, clothing, helmets, circuit boards, sporting goods, soundproofing, vehicles, and more. Today it’s made by using high-pressure air to force molten glass through tiny holes.

• In the 1970s, Corning Glass Works, located in Corning, New York, created glass that was so clear that a chunk of it half mile long was as transparent as a single glass pane. Intrigued by this phenomenon, scientists at Bell Labs used fibers of this ultra-transparent glass in experiments with laser beams, shooting the laser light down the middle of the fibers.

• The combination of super-concentrated light beams and ultra-clear glass resulted in the revolution of fiber optics. Whereas the drinking glass in your kitchen is 70% silica, the glass in fiber optic cables is 100% silica.

It can be quite difficult to make breaking putts where you have to aim more than a foot to the left or the right of the hole. It’s partly a guess on the line to take and then how hard to hit it on that intention. While many golfers will say that speed is everything, you’ll need a proper mix of line and speed to make those putts.

When practicing larger breaking putts, try laying down a half dozen balls in a pattern illustrated below. Start with the actual ball to be hit, but then place balls progressively from the hole backwards. You’ll focus on how the ball enters the hole, how much it may curve at the end of the putt, and visualize how the entire putt would look before you hit it. This illustration will give you a better understanding of line and speed that you need to guess on for that putt. There is no perfect combination, but keep in mind “higher and softer” usually results in less three putts from short range.
