The crew of the Apollo 8 mission had done it previously in 1968, and had built a Christmas tree from empty metal food containers, with an aluminumfoil, hand-crafted comet carefully placed on top.

This group of wolves better understood the pointing gesture, while the dogs did not. But when dog trainers worked with the shelter dogs in a deliberate attempt to teach them the meaning of the point, they were able to learn it quickly, usually within several minutes.

• In another experiment, researchers plugged in two speakers an equal distance from where a series of test dogs were positioned. One speaker played the pre-recorded sound of a baby laughing for 20 seconds; the other played the sound of a baby crying, also for 20 seconds.

Virtually all the dogs tested approached the sound of the baby crying.

How to Stop Making Bad Decisions I Everyday saw the funniest sign, but it wasn’t funny for long because I started to think about it. SudCHEAPSKATE denly, the humor melted away. The sign read:

Ouch! Those words hit hard because I’ve made more than my share of bad money decisions in my life.

I’ve come a long way from that dark season of my life. I am determined to not go back, but also to not live with regret for what might have been.

Instead of living with my eyes on the rearview mirror, I want to stay focused on the present with eyes toward the future. A good example of this is shown by the farmer as he plows the rows in his field. If he's always looking back, the rows will be crooked, wandering left and right off center. But if he keeps his eyes forward and fixed on a goal, his rows will always stay straight. In this same way we can focus on the right path to take when it comes to money and personal finance. ®

GET SMART Despite the fact that research from the University of British Columbia released in November 2013 found the smallest part of the human brain is integral in the decision-making process, and the fact that we do seem to repeat our mistakes, it is possible to become a better decision-maker.

With practice, awareness and a bit of tender, loving care for yourself, you can learn to make better choices.

CHECK YOUR HISTORY Sift back through your memory when you were faced with something similar to the thing you’re facing now. Review what happened. If it turned out to be a bad decision, ask: What led up to that? History does repeat itself, but you can change the way you will make this decision.

You don’t have to be dumb this time just because that’s how things went the last time. The past is over, but the future is still open for discussion.

LOOK INSIDE I know for myself that when I am overly tired or hungry, I make really bad decisions. I can’t think straight. I’m prone to compulsiveness.

Knowing this, I have a pretty hard and fast rule: I refuse to make decisions once the sun has gone down. Then in the morning, I take a deep breath, address my stress level and move forward cautiously.

SEEK COUNSEL Unless this decision you are looking at is very personal, very private, call a friend, or take your dad out for coffee. Find someone you respect who will listen and then offer his or her best advice. You don’t have to take it, but chances are pretty good that whatever it is, it will help you to see the picture more clearly.

A: Yes, I believe that as long as Bialik enjoys acting in comedies, “Jeopardy” will just have to be a part-time gig for her. Season two of her sitcom “Call Me Kat” just kicked off on Fox. She juggles her busy schedule by also hosting the syndicated game show “Jeopardy!” with Ken Jennings.

A lot of people say they got a dog for protection. But do those people know the difference between protection and aggression?

Barking at anyone who comes into your yard or house is not protection.

Charging the mailman is not protection.

Snarling at passers-by from that coveted spot at the front window is not protection.

Growling at or biting family members and friends is certainly not protection.

So what is?

A protection dog will recognize a potentially life-threatening situation and act to prevent it. This kind of recognition requires training to develop, as does the dog’s ability to respond reliably and appropriately to the situation. Anything less is simply aggression.

Aggression is an overreaction. It’s a form of imbalance. An aggressive dog responds to stimuli, however innocuous, without reason or logic. He’s irrational, out of control, unpredictable and even dangerous.

I recently spoke with a couple whose dog bit their upstairs neighbor’s child. Their response?

“He didn’t mean it. He was protecting our son.”

From what? The playfulness of another kid? The dog overreacted. He wasn’t picking up on a life-threatening situation. He misread the signs, and his response was grossly inappropriate.

With a dog like this, the question becomes: How do you prevent unpredictable behavior?

“He doesn’t do it all the time.”

I hear this all the time. It just underscores the challenge of making safe an unpredictable dog.

If he did it all the time, it would be predictable, and you could, in that case, desensitize the animal to those tried-and-true triggers. “He doesn’t do it all the time” is by no means a good thing. When it comes to aggressive behavior, that he does it at all should be cause to call in a professional.

A COLA Gift From Congress Few Seniors Know About I wonder if any of my readers have thought about this. Why did you get the 2022 cost-of-living increase in your January Social Security checks?

After all, that check you get in January is the Social Security payment for December. In other words, you get your first 2022 COLA increase in your December 2021 Social Security benefit. So why is that? Well, it has to do with the power of the senior citizen lobby in this country. When old folks gripe about something, especially when it comes to Social Security, Congress can’t act quickly enough to make them happy. And this business about getting the COLA one month early is a good example of that.

Automatic annual cost-of-living adjustments to Social Security checks first started in 1975. (Prior to that, it took an act of Congress to hand out increases in Social Security benefits.)

And when those automatic COLAs started, they were always properly paid in the January Social Security check that was sent to folks in February.

And for the first several years, people just accepted this procedure.

But then in the early 1980s, seniors began to complain. They griped, “Why do I have to wait until February to get my first COLA increase for the year?” Someone should have simply explained to the grumbling geezers that they were getting the increase properly and on time. They were getting the COLA in their January checks paid in February.

But that’s not how things work when it comes to placating riled-up senior citizens. Explanations weren’t in order. Instead, legislation was called for. So, in 1983, Congress passed a law saying that seniors would get their COLA increases in January of each year -- in effect, one month early.

Problem solved. Grandma and Grandpa are happy!

I can think of dozens of other times when Congress jumped to fix a perceived Social Security problem just to keep senior citizens happy. I only have space in this column to share one more.

And this one also has to do with the annual COLAs. As part of the process for establishing the automatic COLAs back in the 1970s, the Social Security Administration had to come up with a formula for calculating increases to people’s Social Security checks -- which they did. But after COLAs were paid for a couple of years, someone noticed the formula was wrong. Social Security beneficiaries were getting increases that were slightly higher than the law intended.

Once the mistake was discovered and the SSA notified Congress, several decisions had to be made. For one, they had to figure out what to do about all the Social Security beneficiaries who received the overly generous COLA adjustments.

Congress decided to let them keep the money. (It would have been political suicide to send “overpayment” letters to every senior citizen in the country demanding repayment of the incorrectly paid funds.)

The second choice Congress had to make was to decide where to draw the line -- to figure

out which people would have their benefits figured 1916 and earlier, but they were getting higher benusing the proper COLA formula. And they drew efits than everyone born after 1921.

Then greedy lobbying groups got into the that line at 1917. In other words, they said everymix and really muddied things. Sounds simple enough, doesn’t it? This is a photo of a metal figure that belonged to my aunt. It always fascinated me when I was a child, and when my aunt passed away, my uncle gave it to me. He said he knew how much I liked it and thought my aunt would want me to have it. It stands 12 inches tall and is marked “J.M.R. -- 1916.” It is in perfect condition.

I will always treasure it and would never part with it. I plan to pass it down to my daughter. Any information you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Your pitcher is an example of the “Art Nouveau Lady” series that included a plethora of pieces that included pitchers, toothpick holders, dresser sets, candlestick holders, vases, baskets, bowls and humidors.

This series was available in both white satin finish and multi-colored finish. Pitchers can be found in three sizes: water, milk and cream.

The Good Fairy figure was the creation of Jessie McCutcheon Raleigh.
