Queridos miembros y amigos del Jardín,
El calentamiento global ya está aquí, amigos. Los datos lo confirman: 2024 batió todos los récords de temperaturas medias más altas registradas desde que la ciencia comenzó a monitorizar las temperaturas globales en 1880. Lo que es peor, el anterior récord lo ostentaba 2023, por lo que no se trata de una casualidad.
El Jardín Botánico de Vallarta siempre ha monitoreado nuestra temperatura local a lo largo del año. Debido a nuestra altitud, a 450 metros sobre el nivel del mar (1350 pies), disfrutamos de un clima más fresco que en la ciudad de Puerto Vallarta. Durante los últimos 20 años, hemos observado constantemente temperaturas máximas diarias de alrededor de 29 °C (84 °F) durante todo el verano. Este año, por primera vez, vimos cómo el mercurio se disparaba hasta superar los 35 °C (90 °F), debido a una fuerte ola de calor que envolvió todo el oeste de México.
Los seres humanos no somos los únicos que nos sentimos incómodos con tanto calor; nuestras plantas también sufren estrés térmico. Muchas de las plantas frágiles de nuestro jardín, como algunas orquídeas y rododendros, son endémicas de zonas montañosas de mayor altitud y no pueden tolerar altas temperaturas durante mucho tiempo. Estoy segura de que muchos de ustedes, si no todos, llevan años preocupados por el cambio climático, al igual que yo. Pero lo que antes parecía un riesgo futuro es ahora nuestra realidad.
El año 2025 también nos ha traído lluvias récord y las consiguientes inundaciones, de las que también son responsables las altas temperaturas. La ciencia predice tormentas eléctricas y huracanes cada vez más fuertes y frecuentes en todo el mundo, incluido aquí en Cabo Corrientes, durante mucho tiempo.
Otra víctima que sospechamos que fue causada por el calor récord fue la famosa temporada de colibríes del jardín. El jardín botánico es un foco de diversidad de colibríes, con al menos 15 especies diferentes que nos visitan a lo largo del año, con un pico de aves migratorias que llegan en verano. Este año, los colibríes llegaron como siempre, pero como estábamos en medio de una ola de calor que duró semanas, rápidamente se volvieron escasos y luego desaparecieron, suponemos que a altitudes más elevadas con temperaturas más bajas. Esperamos que aún puedan regresar, ya que parece que las cosas se han enfriado de nuevo, pero la cancelación de nuestro festival anual de colibríes en agosto fue una decepción para todos nosotros. Dear Members and Friends of the Garden,
Global warming is already here folks. The data is in: 2024 broke all records for the average highest temperatures recorded since science began monitoring global temperatures in 1880. What’s worse, the previous record holder was 2023 – this is not a fluke.
The Vallarta Botanical Garden has always monitored our local temperature throughout the year. Because of our altitude at 450 meters above sea level (1,350 feet), we enjoyed cooler weather than in the city Puerto Vallarta. For the last 20 years we’ve consistently seen daily high temperatures of around 84°F (29°C) throughout the summer. This year for the first time, we saw the mercury soar into the upper 90s (35°C+), as a strong heat wave enveloped all of western Mexico.
Us humans aren’t the only ones made uncomfortable by such heat; our plants suffer from heat stress as well. Many of our garden’s fragile plants, like some orchids and rhododendrons, are endemic to higher altitude mountainous areas and cannot tolerate high temps for any length of time. I’m sure many if not all of you have been worried about climate change for years already, just like me. But what may have seemed like a future risk before is now our reality.
2025 has also brought us record rainfall and resultant flooding, with the higher temperatures also to blame. Science predicts ever stronger and more frequent thunderstorms and hurricanes around the world, including here in Cabo Corrientes, for well into the future.
Another casualty we suspect was caused by the record heat was the garden's celebrated hummingbird season. The botanical garden is a hotspot of hummingbird diversity with at least 15 different species visiting us through the year, with a peek of migratory birds arriving in the summer. This year the hummingbirds arrived like always, but as we were in the middle of a the weeks-long heatwave, they quickly became scarce then vanished, we assume to high elevations with lower temps.. We are hoping they might still return as things seem to have cooled off again, but the cancellation of our annual August hummingbird festival was a disappointment to us all. Nature exists in a fragile equilibrium and creatures like hummingbirds and plants like orchids are the proverbial "canary in the coal mine" indicating that serious disruption is already underway.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY IN THE GARDEN INDUSTRY.
I learned biology from my parents and then botany during my academic training in México by studying the flora of the arid olive groves of the Mezquital Valley, Hidalgo. I also studied the milpas—a crop-growing system used throughout Mesoamerica that involves intercropping corn with squash, beans, and other edible plants, including wild ones—of Tlaxcala and the Abies religiosa forests of the Sierra Nevada. These experiences as a botanist and forester forged my path in Mexican public gardens. In 2019 I became Director of the Herbarium and Seed Bank of the Francisco Peláez Ethnobotanical Garden in Cholula, Puebla, where they study more than 600 plant species with beneficial medicinal, culinary, and cosmetic value.
In 2022 I moved to the west coast of Mexico to continue my professional career as Head of the Botany and Education Department of the Vallarta Botanical Garden (VBG) in the state of Jalisco, where I oversee the plant collections and records and coordinate environmental education programs for neighboring communities. The VBG is a national leader in conservation and protects more than 123 hectares of forest habitat in one of the most diverse and unexplored regions of our country.
My work in botanic gardens has connected me to the Mexican Association of Botanic Gardens, the Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI), and the American Public Gardens Association (APGA). I have received invaluable
support for my professional development including a Longwood scholarship to attend the 2023 APGA conference in Dallas, Texas, and two BGCI scholarships for the Caribbean and Central American Garden Network meeting in Cartagena, Colombia, and the BGCI Global Botanic Gardens Congress in Singapore.
TELL US ABOUT A RECENT PROJECT YOU WORKED ON.
I‘m currently working on two BGCI-supported projects at the VBG: in vitro culture of four native Encyclia orchids, and acorn sampling of two critically endangered oaks from Western Mexico, the latter also with support from The Morton Arboretum and ArbNet and the collaboration of Adam Black from the Bartlett Arboretum. In addition, I coordinate the “Plantas Mexicanas,” a science communication project that has more than 70,000 followers on social media and seeks out new plant species in my country. We recently discovered and described a new species at VBG within the Horcones river basin, Polystemma horconesensis (pictured above).
WHAT DO YOU FIND TO BE THE MOST REWARDING THING ABOUT WORKING IN THIS FIELD?
I have learned so much throughout all these experiences with the public garden community. One of the most fulfilling has been collaborating with incredible professionals who work for the benefit of the environment and give hope for the future of coexistence between nature and people.

Colibrí Barba Negra / Black-chinned Hummingbird

Continuamos celebrando a nuestros colibríes migratorios. El protagonista de este mes es el Colibrí Barba Negra (Archilochus alexandri), quien se puede encontrar en hábitats boscosos desde Canadá hasta México.
Mientras vuela, este colibrí mueve su cola hacia abajo y hacia arriba más frecuentemente que otros colibríes. Si lo observas con atención podrás notar el color púrpura intenso de su garganta entre su oscuro plumaje.
El nombre Archilochus refiere a Arquíloco, un poeta griego de la isla de Paros (600 A.C.), famoso por su ingenio salvaje y su desprecio por las convenciones; mientras que alexandri fue el epíteto elegido por los ornitólogos franceses Jules Bourcier y Étienne Mulsant, en referencia a un tal Dr. Alexandre que practicó en México y envió especímenes biológicos a París en la década de 1840.
Finalmente, como dato curioso: el Colibrí Barba Negra tiene el genoma más pequeño entre los amniotas vivos (un clade que incluye todos los aves, reptiles, mamíferos y anfibios) según la Base de datos del tamaño del genoma animal, con solo 910 millones de pares de bases, comparado con aproximadamente 3.2 billones de pares de bases en el genoma humano.
Tener un jardín de polinizadores, o incluso un alimentador con agua azucarado es una excelente idea para que lleguen a tu casa.
As we continue celebrating our migratory hummingbirds, the featured hummingbird of the month is the Blackchinned Hummingbird (Archilochus alexandri), which can be found in woodland habitats from Canada to Mexico.
This hummingbird swings its tail down and up more frequently than other hummingbirds while in flight. If you watch closely you will notice its deep purple throat color among its dark plumage.
The name Archilochus refers to Archilochus, a Greek poet from the island of Paros (600 B.C.), famous for his wild wit and disregard for convention; while alexandri was the epithet chosen by French ornithologists Jules Bourcier and Étienne Mulsant, in reference to a Dr. Alexandre who practiced in Mexico and sent biological specimens to Paris in the 1840s.
Finally, a curious fact: the Black-chinned Hummingbird has the smallest genome among living amniotes (a class which includes all birds, reptiles, mammals and amphibians) according to the Animal Genome Size Database, possessing only 910 million base pairs, compared to the approximately 3.2 billion base pairs in the human genome.
A pollinator garden filled with flowers, or even a sugarwater hummingbird feeder, will attract these beautiful little creatures to your home.

Cuitlauzina pulchella

Desde el sur de México hasta El Salvador llega al Jardín Botánico de Vallarta esta pequeña y hermosa flor.
El género Cuitlauzina fue nombrado en honor de Cuitláhuac, penúltimo emperador mexica. Proviene del original "Cuauhtlahuac", que significa Águila sobre el agua, este nombre es muy respetado por haber sido el principal Tlatoani defensor de los mexicas. Cuitláhuac fue el estratega que venció a Hernán Cortés y sus tropas durante la Noche de la Victoria el 30 de junio de 1520.
El término pulchella proviene del diminutivo de pulcher bello: bonito, hermoso, pequeño, pues sus flores alcanzan los 3.5 cm de diámetro, pero son muy llamativas por su textura y el contraste entre el blanco y el amarillo-naranja. Además, durante las mañanas emite un intenso perfume. Si quieres disfrutarlo, visítanos temprano.
With a native range spanning from El Salvador to southern Mexico, the Vallarta Botanical Garden welcomes this small and beautiful flower.
The genus Cuitlauzina was named in honor of Cuitláhuac, penultimate Mexica emperor and a highly respected historical figure. With the original “Cuauhtlahuac” meaning “Eagle over the Water,” this emperor was the main Tlatoani defender of the Mexicas and the indigenous strategist who defeated Hernán Cortés and his troops during the Night of Victory on June 30, 1520.
The species name pulchella comes from the diminutive of the Latin pulcher, meaning pretty, beautiful, and also small, as its flowers only reach 3.5 cm in diameter. Despite its small size, these blooms are very striking for their texture and contrasting white and yellow-orange coloring. As a bonus, it emits an intense perfume in the morning, so if you want to enjoy it best, come early!

CONTINÚA EL PROGRAMA PARA LA CONSERVACIÓN DEL ENCINO DE CUALE
(Quercus cualensis) en El Cuale, Jalisco
THE PROGRAM FOR THE CONSERVATION OF THE CUALE OAK CONTINUES

Una parte fundamental de nuestra misión es trabajar con las comunidades locales para aumentar el conocimiento y el entusiasmo por su patrimonio natural y educar sobre lo que pueden hacer para proteger y conservar el bioma único de Cabo Corrientes. Durante nuestra segunda visita a la comunidad de El Cuale este 4 y 5 de julio de 2025, reafirmamos el compromiso con la educación ambiental y la conservación del encino blanco (Quercus cualensis), una especie endémica y en riesgo. Esta jornada estuvo llena de actividades creativas y educativas para una docena de infantes entusiastas y varios adultos de la comunidad.
Esta ocasión además de la participación del laboratorio de Ecología y Conservación de Bosques Templados de la FES Iztacala UNAM a cargo de la Dra. Maribel Arenas Navarro, tuvimos nuevamente la visita de Adam Black del Bartlett Tree Research Labs and Arboretum (BTRLA), quien nos ayudó durante el taller y la exploración botánica.
Iniciamos con un taller de pintura utilizando colorantes naturales obtenidos a partir de ingredientes vegetales: cúrcuma, betabel, espinaca, café y otros. Los niños exploraron con entusiasmo las posibilidades cromáticas de estos pigmentos, dándole vida a encinos y animales de su entorno. Posteriormente, jugaron la “Lotería mexicana de frutas, verduras y algunas especias” de Fundación HERDEZ, que nos regaló la Casa Doña María Pons desde San Luis Potosí.
A core part of our mission is working with local communities to spread awareness of and enthusiasm for their natural heritage and what they can do to protect and conserve the unique biome of Cabo Corrientes. On July 4 and 5 2005 we made a second visit to the community of El Cuale, to continue our educational efforts for the conservation of the Cuale oak (Quercus cualensis), an endemic and threatened species. The two days were filled with creative and educational activities for a dozen enthusiastic children and several adults from the community.
We were once again lucky to have the participation of Adam Black from Bartlett Tree Research Labs and Arboretum (BTRLA), who assisted us during the workshop and botanical exploration. This time we also enjoyed the participation of the Temperate Forest Ecology and Conservation Laboratory at the Iztacala National Forest School (FES), led by Dr. Maribel Arenas Navarro.
We began with a painting workshop using natural dyes obtained from plant ingredients: turmeric, beets, spinach, coffee, and others. The children joyfully and creatively explored the chromatic possibilities of these pigments, bringing to life the oaks and animals of their environment via art. Afterwards, they played the "Mexican Fruit, Vegetable, and Spice Lottery" organized by the HERDEZ Foundation, a gift from Casa Doña María Pons in San Luis Potosí.
Finalmente, como parte de las acciones de conservación, colectamos bellotas de Q. cualensis para su posterior germinación en nuestro invernadero y se llevó a cabo la plantación de cuatro ejemplares jóvenes de estos encinos en la plaza central de la comunidad, con el permiso de las autoridades locales.
Próximamente tendremos más noticias acerca de otro de nuestros encinos endémicos considerados en este proyecto de conservación: el Quercus tuitensis. No te pierdas los próximos números de El Papelillo.
Finally, as part of our conservation efforts, we collected Q. cualensis acorns for later germination in our greenhouse, and four young oak trees were planted in the community's central plaza with the permission of local authorities.

¡Éxito en la campaña de donativos para la planta eléctrica! Generator Match Fundraiser Success!

Nos sentimos sinceramente conmovidos por la abrumadora respuesta que recibimos durante nuestra campaña de donativos ‘empate’ en julio para adquirir una planta eléctrica industrial para el Jardín. ¡Gracias a la generosidad de nuestra comunidad de amigos y Miembros, alcanzamos nuestra meta y este sueño ahora puede hacerse realidad!
125 personas contribuyeron a la campaña, que se llevó a cabo durante todo el mes de julio, y recibimos 130 donaciones individuales. ¡Algunas personas donaron dos veces! Muchos donantes fueron Miembros, pero también recibimos apoyo importante de visitantes generales que entraron por la taquilla y de personas que reservaron nuestros tours guiados. Una pareja incluso donó sin haber visitado aún el Jardín; planean venir más adelante este año. ¡Tendremos que invitarles un par de bebidas por cuenta de la casa! A todos ustedes que hicieron una donación: gracias. Su generosidad y apoyo significan muchísimo para nosotros.
Nuestra meta era recaudar $20,000 USD ($375,000 MXN). Superamos esta cifra por un increíble monto de $5,000 USD ($93,000 MXN), lo cual significa que ahora tenemos fondos suficientes para cubrir costos adicionales relacionados con la llegada de la nueva planta eléctrica al Jardín, principalmente mano de obra y materiales. También podremos cubrir algunos gastos futuros de mantenimiento. El total final recaudado fue de $25,350 USD ($475,700 MXN).
Este es un proyecto urgente que ayudará a proteger los miles de plántulas de orquídeas raras que cultivamos bajo condiciones especializadas en nuestro laboratorio e invernadero. También evitará que el Jardín tenga que cerrar en caso de un corte de luz. We feel genuinely humbled by the overwhelming response to our July match fundraiser to bring an industrial back-up generator to the Garden. Thanks to the generosity of our community of friends and Members, we reached our target, and this dream can now become a reality!
125 people gave to the campaign, which ran throughout July, and we received 130 individual donations. Some people gave twice! Many donors were Members, but we also received significant support from general visitors coming through the gate and from people booked onto our tours. One couple donated even though they are yet to visit the Garden; they plan to visit us later in the year. We will have to treat them to a couple of drinks on the house! Thank you to all of you who gave to the campaign. Your generosity and support mean such a lot.
Our fundraising target was $20,000 USD. We exceeded this by an incredible $5,000 USD, which means that we now have enough funds to cover additional costs of bringing the new generator to the Garden; mainly labour and materials. We can also cover some future maintenance costs. The final total raised was $25,350 USD.
This is an urgent project that will help safeguard the thousands of rare orchid seedlings being cultivated under specialised conditions in our laboratory and greenhouse. It will also prevent the Garden having to close in the event of a power cut. Even since launching the campaign last month, we have experienced several brief blackouts caused by heavy rains and powerful winds. With the hurricane season just round the corner, your generosity has enabled us to complete this project in the nick of time!

Este mes tuvimos una visita escolar inesperada, del Instituto de Capacitación y Educación Profesional (ICEP), estudiantes de la materia Didáctica de las Ciencias naturales de octavo cuatrimestre de la Licenciatura en Educación. Es la primera vez que una escuela nos visita en un periodo vacacional para la mayoría de los estudiantes. Nos entusiasma saber que ahora las escuelas cuatrimestrales, sabatinas o con horarios flexibles contribuyan a que más jóvenes puedan continuar sus estudios. Así nosotros también podemos ofrecer actividades para ellos.

This month we had one unexpected school visit from the Institute for Training and Professional Education (ICEP), students studying Natural Sciences Teaching in the eighth semester of their Bachelor's Degree in Education. This is the first time a school has visited us during what is a vacation period for most students. We are excited to know that semester-based, Saturday, or flexible-schedule schools are now helping more young people to continue their studies. This allows us to offer activities for them as well.
We would like to thank the Grand Park Royal Puerto Vallarta Hotel once again for continuing to support the student community. The school that visited us benefited from a free box lunch sponsored by this hotel.

Día del Árbol Arbor Day

El Día del Árbol se celebró el jueves 10 de julio en el Jardín Botánico de Vallarta, para honrar a los árboles como pilares de sostenibilidad y bienestar. Se llevó a cabo un recorrido sobre árboles emblemáticos en el jardín botánico y una exposición por parte de la Organización para la Conservación de Árboles (OCA) y el personal del Laboratorio de Biodiversidad y Servicios Ecosistémicos del Centro Universitario de la Costa. Estos últimos llevaron a cabo mediciones de los árboles de Chilte (Chidoscolus tepicensis) en nuestro jardín botánico, como parte de la investigación de la estudiante doctoral Joanna Jazmín Suarez Torres.
Asimismo, Tahamara Esquivel Rodríguez, Encargada del Programa de Arbolado Urbano del Gobierno Municipal de Puerto Vallarta, impartió una charla especial sobre la importancia del arbolado urbano en nuestras ciudades. Su experiencia como responsable del Programa de Arbolado Urbano de Puerto Vallarta, así como su labor en la Organización para la Conservación de los Árboles, enriqueció esta celebración y ofreció al público una valiosa perspectiva sobre el papel de los árboles en la vida urbana. Gracias a los esfuerzos de ella y su equipo Puerto Vallarta es reconocida con el distintivo Ciudades Árbol del Mundo, iniciativa conjunta de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura (FAO) y Arbor Day Foundation (ADF).
Arbor Day was celebrated on Thursday, July 10, at the Vallarta Botanical Garden, a day dedicated to honoring trees as pillars of sustainability and wellbeing. A tour of the trees in the garden and the bay was conducted by staff from the Organization for the Conservation of Trees (OCA) and staff from the Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Laboratory at the Centro Universitario de la Costa. The latter are also studying the gum trees in our garden in terms of populations and conservation.
Tahamara Esquivel Rodríguez, head of the Urban Tree Program of the Municipal Government of Puerto Vallarta, gave a special talk on the importance of urban trees in our cities. Her experience as head of the Puerto Vallarta Urban Tree Program, as well as her work with the Organization for the Conservation of Trees, enriched this celebration and offered the public a valuable perspective on the role of trees in urban life. Thanks to her efforts and those of her team, Puerto Vallarta has been recognized with the Tree Cities of the World designation, a joint initiative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Arbor Day Foundation (ADF).

4. If your Membership has expired, please attempt to renew it at home before your visit using our online system Wild Apricot https://vbg.wildapricot.org This will allow you fast entry into the garden.
5. Members: Please present your membership card and one form of identification at the cashier. Inform the cashier if you have additional non-member guests and pay the appropriate fee.
6. Please wear your membership card at all times to obtain valuable discounts at the gift shop, restaurant and plant sales area.
7. Non-members pay 100 pesos per pet; members free
8. Lower parking is also designated handicapped accessible with an official placard.
9. Non-members may use member's parking lot when available for 300 pesos per car.
10. Drivers have 5-minute limits to pick up or drop off at Hacienda.

El 13 de julio de 2025 se llevó a cabo la procesión de la Virgen del Carmen en el poblado de Las Juntas y los Veranos, aledaño al Jardín Botánico de Vallarta. El evento contó con la participación y apoyo del jardín botánico, como ya es tradición desde hace años.
Esta es una forma significativa de fortalecer el vínculo con la comunidad y su patrimonio espiritual. Esta tradición teje una red de identidad compartida entre generaciones. Caminar juntos, entonar cantos y portar una imagen son gestos cargados de simbolismo: representan respeto, devoción y agradecimiento por los dones de la vida cotidiana, en especial aquellos vinculados al mar, la tierra y la esperanza. Para comunidades como Las Juntas y Los Veranos, donde la cultura se entrelaza íntimamente con la naturaleza, esta peregrinación es también un acto de reconciliación y armonía con el entorno.
Así es como la conservación ecológica puede estar profundamente conectada con las expresiones culturales. Es una oportunidad para sembrar conciencia desde lo espiritual y lo colectivo, mostrando que la celebración no solo vive en lo religioso, sino también en el compromiso con el bienestar común.
On July 13, 2025, the procession of the Virgin of Carmen took place in the town of Las Juntas and Los Veranos, adjacent to the Vallarta Botanical Garden. As we have for many years, the botanical garden was proud to support and participate in this important local tradition.
The processional event weaves a web of shared identity between generations. Walking together, singing songs, and carrying an image are all symbolic gestures: representing respect, devotion, and gratitude for the gifts of daily life, especially those linked to the sea, the land, and hope. For communities like Las Juntas and Los Veranos, where culture is intimately intertwined with nature, this pilgrimage is also an act of reconciliation and harmony with the environment. Participating in the event is a meaningful way for the Garden to strengthen our bond with the neighboring community and its spiritual heritage.
We believe that ecological conservation should be deeply connected to cultural expressions. Events like these are opportunities to raise awareness or the value of nature from a spiritual and collective perspective, demonstrating that the celebration is not only rooted in religion, but also in a commitment to the common good.

*El Jardín Botánico de Vallarta se complace en otorgar de forma gratuita entradas para recorridos guiados y programas educativos a grupos escolares que realicen sus reservaciones con anticipación; estas visitas sólo se realizan los miércoles de cada semana. Las peticiones para solicitar una reservación deberán ser enviadas a escolar@vbgardens.org con al menos cinco días de anticipación a la fecha en que se planea la visita. Las primeras peticiones en llegar serán las que se atenderán primero y las reservaciones serán programadas con base en los demás eventos y programas que ya se tengan previstos en nuestro calendario.
** La orientación de la 1 pm se ofrece diariamente de diciembre a marzo, de otra manera, únicamente cuando el Jardín cuenta con voluntarios disponibles.
Los autobuses escolares ya no están permitidos en el estacionamiento y deben esperar en la parada de autobús de la ciudad en la entrada del jardín. Applications may be made by email to escolar@vbgardens.org at least five days before the requested visit date, and are granted on a first-come, first served basis, and subject to scheduling restrictions.
** 1 pm orientation is offered daily from December through March and otherwise only when volunteers are available.
School buses may no longer enter the visitor parking lot. Drivers should drop off students and teachers at the city bus stop near the main entrance. Buses may then wait at the Los Horcones Bridge and return to pick up students at the public bus stop across the highway at a prearranged time.
