This exhibition Looking back at the Anthropocene was conceived, developed and produced in the course of the Summer Semester 2019, with the students of the Design Foundation Class. It was an experiment in creating a collective narrative through the combination of individual research and design projects. Inspired by the Reverse Archaeology workshop format by Stuart Candy, the idea was to make a museum’s show, in a 100 years from now. In the show, objects made by each one of the students were displayed; they were fictional artefacts found from the past, although the students were imagining the future when they were designing them. The making of consitsts of a complex methodology, where a number of tools were employed throughout the semester, starting with Instant Archetypes - a new tarot for the new Normal by Londonbased Superflux studio, a futures toolkit to activate creative and critical thinking through live storytelling, problem-solving and insight exploration. Then followed the workshop Assembly - Disassembly with designer, researcher and curator Laura Bernhard and the workshop Narrative Mapping with Dr. Sumugan Sivanesan, anti-disciplinary artist and academic. The outcome was an exhibition which was activated with a LARP (Live Action Role Play) performance during the Rundgang in front of the jury of professors. The professors assumed the role of the museum’s visitors, following a tour by Fritz, the guide. The tour was the performance’s spine. Each student had an expert’s role, presenting each artefact. What was personally surprising was that although we discussed in the class about going beyond the binary of a good or a bad future, most of the projects came out quite dystopian. This made me think that we have to find ways to decolonise fiction from this kind of imagination. Valentina Karga, July 2019
Welcome to the Museum of Times Past. The museum presents the social and technological development of the time around the great global collapse. The signs came in on time, but the society cared too much about their personal wellbeing, to risk what they had. This behaviour probably led to the economic, political and social disintegration of institutions and to mismanagement and exploitation of resources. Resources essential for survival were permanently depleted and habitats massively restricted. The capitalist system collapsed and the earth reached its limits. Everything was lost. Some survived the collapse and formed new communities, in a totally new way. Today, the earth is no longer the same, the sky turned pink, molecular structures changed and so did the structure of life and society. We welcome you warmly to our exhibition. Be curious! A-TRANSLATOR Year: 2022 A-Translator translates inserted materials to new materials.It reproduces desired materials from waste combined with a new resource, shark oil. It disassembles them to atomic structural level reassembles them into something else. JIA KIM, SCIENTIST: Everything in the world consists of atoms and variation of atoms determines different forms. Humans intake energy through various food. Plants intake energy through soil, sunlight and water. Machines use electric, lithium or another energy. What if all of them can intake energy from a same substance? It was recently discovered that squalene, The Oil from a shark liver, can provide energy to everything such as human, plant, animal and machine. There was no energy suitable for humans and machines together. For example, the petroleum oil can be used for cars, machines and electronic devices. However, humans cannot use energy from the petroleum oil. In the same manner, machines and plants cannot intake energy sources like meat and vegetables which humans normally take. However, using the substance called MHCE-1 in the shark oil , humans, machines and plants can be supplied of same energy through the same substance. In short, human and plants can take energy from the petroleum oil and machines can take energy from meat and vegetable.

The analysis of structure of MHCE-1 shows that atoms of a substance, for example called A, change into lego like blocks when MHCE-1 is injected. The substance A changed its atoms into lego like blocks now can be re assembled into a new substance B. In other words, when MHCE-1 changes a shape of atoms of an egg when it is injected, the egg can be changed into an orange. However, the system, which is the translator, is necessary in the process of reassembly of the lego like changed atoms. As if a sentence with a subject, verb and object is translated into another language throughout a system in a brain of a translator. Therefore, with the translator and the oil, the petroleum oil can be transformed into a substance human can consume. Depending on quality of the translator, taste and kinds of food are various. The most promising thing about the translator is that wastes can also be transformed into energy sources. Recently, in one island in South Asia where the ocean pollution is severe, the wastes floating on the surface of the sea were changed into energy bars the local people can eat for a month through the translator. The taste of the ener-
gy bar was also good for the local people there and the company which developed the translator donated their translators for environmental protection and aid.  How the shark oil is extracted? The shark living in a deep sea of the southern Pacific Ocean produces the oil twice a year with an amount of 8 liter at once. This amount is enough for 100,000 people for one year. Even the oil is extracted the shark does not die. However, the shark which the oil is extracted from cannot reproduce. Especially when the oil is extracted from a baby shark, the baby shark can be sexless. The household translator is also developed. The household translator reproduces desired materials with waste and the shark oil. For example, with a banana peel and an egg shell, it reproduces coffee powder. Plastic containers or snack bags can turn into detergent. The household translator analyses the input substance and translates them into reproducible materials. Therefore, substances from a banana peel are translated at atomic level and reproduced into different substances such as toothpaste, coffee powder, fertilizer, flour, starch and etc.
SPLINT Year: 2025 An accessoir attached on human’s crook of the arm after 16th birthday. Blocking the full movement of the arm as a reminder of state control.
JOSEF K, ARCHEOLOGIST : I was called for this archeological excavation after the group of specialists found the first skeleton. The object which we later called “SPLINT„ was found on the crook of the arm of the skeleton. In the beginning we thought it was part of an accessory, but later we were convinced, that we were having a totally different issue. On every next found skeleton, we found the same object repeatedly, placed exactly in a same way as on the first one. So, the idea came that we might experience something related to discipline or control. The object looked like exactly same on every skeleton. As you can see the shape of SPLINT is rectangular with four cut edges, that makes diagonal and fits the inner side of the elbow. It consists of three layers. The first layer which touches the skin is a soft layer of foam. The second one is made of hard aluminium, which we think is the main part of the object, because it blocks the full movement of the arm. And the third one is perforated aluminium. We made an example of just the main part, especially for this exhibition, using a medi-

cal splint, which restricts the full movement of the arm for people who wants to experience how it feels, so feel free to try it on. Object also has two additional connections, one placed upper side of the muscle and the other one near the wrist. Those are made of latex tubes with a chain inside. Interesting part is also that we managed to identify the time when the object was placed on a human body first time. Person turning 16 years old was receiving SPLINT, which stayed on the arm forever, at least that was what we thought before, until we found another skeleton who was the only one and who didn’t have SPLINT on the arm. That’s why we suppose that it could be possible to open it. But as we examined the object carefully, none of the connectors has an opening, so we still working on it, because we believe that for some people it was possible to hack SPLINT and to be completely independent and free. So, as a conclusion, we believe that SPLINT was the norm, which was blocking the full movement of the arm as a reminder that they were controlled by the state.
K-HUT Year: 2030 A combination of surveillance technology and artificial intelligence takes over the role of politicians and decision making.
ZHANG, FORSCHERIN AUS FACHBEREICH ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: In damaliger Zeit suchten die Menschen eine Utopie : sie vertrauten nicht mehr auf einen Person als ihrer Herrscher zu sein, sondern auf eine Maschine. Da die Menschen lassen sich leicht von Macht, Geld in Versuchung führen, aber Maschine nicht. Sie glaube, dass Entscheidung von Maschine rationaler, demokratischer, sachlicher als die Entscheidung von Menschen wäre, deswegen kam dieser Technologie. Dieses object hier, das heisst “K”, ist ein Artificial Intelligence -Hut und funktioniert mit diese Technologie. Eigentlich hat diese Technologie schon ab 2019 in China eine große Fortschritte bekommen. China hat im Jahr 2020 eine umfassende Überwachung der Menschen durch einer Surveillance system mit “Facial

Die “K”Hut ist eine Zusammenarbeit von surveillance Technologie und Artificial Intelligence. Alle von der Überwachungstechnologie erfassten Daten werden durch die Algorithmen der künstlichen Intelligenz verarbeitet, um objektivere politische Entscheidungen zu treffen. Die Hütte ist es, die sie zu diesem symbolischen Objekt zusammenführt, das den Menschen vollständig ersetzt. Die Algorithmen treffen die gesamte Entscheidung und nicht der Herrscher, der die Hütte trägt. Er trägt es nur symbolisch. War aber das eine Utopie oder Dystopie? Das ist was wir forschen.
CORALIA Year: 2045 A new communication system that allowed humans to communicate telephatically and worked in a similar way to the ancient corals by hacking the human body to host coral cells. DR. SALINAS, SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY STUDIES : According to the most recent research, we know that in that era called Anthropocene and before the great collapse occurred, technology dominated all aspects of human life. It was at that point where they decided to return to old organic forms to modify the human body. Coralia was a new communication system that worked in a similar way to the ancient corals. According to our theories, we assume that this new type of biohacking allowed humans to build a new communication network based on telepathy, independent of the one controlled by machines. It was possible to transmit ideas, thoughts, and feelings instantly from one brain to another one no matter the distance. After different studies made with Coralia, we have a theory of how it worked. Coralia lives in symbiosis together with algae and bacteria. Coralia provides a safe environment and nutrients. In exchange, it receives photosynthetic products as oxygen and organic

To make possible its existence outside the ocean it was necessary to provide a comfortable environment: a source of water; at least 20 degrees of temperature and high levels of salt and algae. These conditions were given by the host: 80% of the human body was made of water; the alimentation used to include high levels of salt, and algae/ seaweed. The energy emitted from the human brain was not enough to transmit information. Coralia, as a biohacking addition, was significant because the photosynthesis of the coral creates extra energy that the human brain can use to increase brain waves and communicate telepathically. What we see from the discovery of these Coralia artifacts, is that Different human bodies needed a different kind of customized corals, to match their uniqueness. It might be that the corals also grew differently though their symbiosis of the different human organisms.

Unserer Forschungteam war überrascht, weil zuerst dachten wir, dass die Geräte, die wir in der Erde gefunden hatten, die Daten als Morsecode speicherten. Aber die Daten sind die Sätze, die die Leute damals heilten. Leider sind die Daten teilweise kaputt, aber die Möglichkeit wird es, dass die Heilung als Vibrationen transformiert wurde. Die Vibrationen wird sich durch die Stärke des Stroms verändert, weil die Stimmen, die von unserer Ohren nach Gehirn weitergeleitet werden, sind auch Strom.

HERNANDEZ, UNIVERSITÄT FÜR BIOLOGIE UND TECHNIKWISSENSCHAFTEN DER VERGANGENHEIT : Vor kurzem haben mein Team und ich von archäologen ein hexagonales Objekt zugeschickt bekommen. Es wurde bei Ausgrabungen eines zerstörten Laborsgefunden. Innerhalb des seltsamen Objekts entdeckten wir zwei Gruppen von Mikroorganismen, die luftdicht verschlossen waren. Nachdem wir es vorsichtig geöffnet haben ohne die Mikroorganismen zu beschädigen und verschiedene Tests durchfühten, kann ich Ihnen jetzt ein en Teil unserer Ergebnisse präsentieren: Der erste Mikroorganismus ist eine Art Bakterie, d ie für die Reparatur der Gewebe in der Schädelzone von Menschen bestimmt ist und deren Lernfähigkeit stimuliert. Aus einem Beliebigen Zelle von Tieren oder Pflanzen wird das Zellkern der Nucleus isoliert und mit einem Gen eines anderen organismus gemischt. Daraus kann man dann durch zuführung von Nahrung wie z.B Zucker oder anderen Nährstoffen: Bakterien, Mikroorganismen oder Fermentation herstellen. MARKUS, HACKER: Dieser kleine Helfer ist die Verbindung zwischen den lebenden auf der Erde und der großen Mutter-Drohne. Sie leitet die Menschen zu hilfreichen Orten und gibt ihnen Hinweise und Tipps. Die Mutter-Drohne hat eine Übersicht über den gesamten Planeten und weiß wo sich die letzten, zum überleben notwendigen, Ressourcen befinden. Wenn starke Gewitter aufziehen können die Menschen so schnell genug gewarnt werden und zu Unterschlüpfen geführt. Im Gegensatz zu Herr Ballaschkes Vermutung sind wir uns ziemlich sicher das diese Mini Drohnen überall auf dem Planeten verteilt waren und viele Personengruppen herumgeführt haben. Selbst wenn die Vermutungen mit den Mini Wohnungen stimmen bin ich mir sehr sicher das viele Menschen einfach nicht für ihr weiteres Leben eingesperrt sein wollten. Sie waren viel zu neugierig. Wir können ja heute sehen was für Vorreiter diese Menschen waren. Heute sind Bildschirme und Lautsprecher um uns rum normal, und wir vertrauen ihnen. Damals war das aber etwas komplett neues das die
Menschen noch nie gesehen haben. Trotzdem haben sie dieser neuen Technologie vertraut. Da wir nur vereinzelt Teile, und noch keine komplette Drohne, gefunden haben sind wir immer noch nicht dazu gekommen sie komplett nachzubauen. Manche Teile gibt es sogar zu unserer Zeit noch nicht. Deswegen geben ich und mein Team das beste um so viel wie möglich über diese Technologie, die unsere Vorfahren gerettet hat und der wir somit unser Leben verdanken herauszufinden.
HIVE HOUSING Year: 2040 This animation show a safe-for-survival enviroment, where enough resources are provided to the inhabitant in a minimum space. However, once you get in you can never get out and you live in a virtual reality. TIM, PROFESSOR FOR ARCHITECTURE : We made a cyber-archologic found. We found a file in a hidden corner of the internet that presents a housing concept. We don’t know if the project was ever build, we only have the file. Due to lack of space and resources the housing concept was based on hexagon shaped living units that were designed for one person to live in at a time to provide a sustainable lifestyle that still gives each individual its personal environment. The living units were modular so they could be added on to each other in every direction. The hexagon shape of the living units gave the opportunity to leave gaps in the housing structure as the diagonal sides of two units carried a third one on top. Therefore the housing structure could easily be built around existing infrastructures and natural objects. The inner parts of the living units consisted of plates that could be rotated around the shape of the unit. The plates could be equipped with living essentials

and minimalistic furniture so that the one plate that matched your current need could be rotated to the down part of the unit. Such as a sleeping area, a living area or a sanitary area. Once you commited to be part of hive housing and moved to one of the living units you could not leave again to provide a lifestyle of survival, safety and sustainability. Anyhow you could enter a virtual reality that made it possible to take part in the world people knew from decades ago. The housing project contained a concept for the future since according to prognosis even the Hive Housing Project wouldn’t provide enough space for humanity to live. Every second living unit was supposed to be devided into two sleeping units. So while the one individual would be awake in the living unit, the other one would be sleeping inside the attached sleeping unit. In a 12 houre cycle the two individuals would switch places. So when one would go to sleep, the other one would wake up.
BIOCOMPUTER Year: 2070 A biocomputer based on human DNA. Extremely powerful. Last of its kind. AI so highly developed that it is unclear whether it can be classified as an object or a species.

PERTTI HAGELSTEIN, LEITENDER PROFESSOR FÜR KÜNSTLICHE INTELLIGENZEN AN DER AIOS UNIVERSITY FOR ARFTIFICAL INTELLIGENCE AND OPERATING SYSTEMS: Was sie hier sehen, werte Besucher, ist der Weltweit leistungsstärkste Biocomputer. Gefunden haben wir ihn in Distrikt 0604 in einem vom Menschen erbauten Atomschutzbunker. Für alle die nicht wissen, was ein BioComputer ist, es ist ein Computer der nicht wie herkömmliche Computer auf Basis von elektrischen Teilen, also Arbeitsspeicher und Prozessor laufen, sondern auf Basis von DNA. Elektrische Computer haben einen Arbeitsspeicher und einen Prozessor und können so immer nur ein Problem gleichzeitig lösen. Beim Biocomputer ist das anders, er funktioniert eher wie ein Gehirn. Er transportiert Daten und löst Probleme durch tausende von kleinen Motorproteinen, die jeder Einzelt für sich ein Problem lösen. Man kann sich das so vorstellen, das in diesem Computer tausende MicropComputer arbeiten, die alle ihren eigenen Arbeitsspeicher und Prozessor besitzen, die alle für sich nicht sonderlich stark sind, doch zusammen eine unglaubliche Leistung erzielen. Den Computer den sie hier sehen, könnte in der Umgebung in der er gefunden wurde wunderbar gedeihen und wachsen, da der Bunker von allen äußeren Einflüssen geschützt und mit einer extra Nährstoffzufuhr für den Computer gebaut wurde. Der Computer ist so über die Jahre immer besser geworden und hab ein Bewusstsein entwickelt. Wir
sind momentan nicht sicher, ob wir ihn als Objekt oder als Spezies einstufen sollen, er hat DNA, ist sehr Intelligent und ist sich seiner selbst bewusst, bezeichnet sich selbst jedoch als Werkzeug. Was ich aber sagen kann ist, dass er uns in naher Zukunft noch sehr nützlich seien wird. Wir haben nun zum ersten mal Zugriff auf lebende Menschliche DNA, was bereits ein unglaublicher Fund ist. Wir können dazu aber auch voller Zuversicht sagen, dass wir höchstwahrscheinlich in einigen Jahren unsere eigenen Biocomputer aus menschlicher DNA züchten können. Das besondere dabei ist, obwohl die menschliche Rasse eine nicht sehr beeindruckende Spezies war, wissen wir nun, das ihr Nervensystem um ein vielfaches schneller agiert hat als das unsere. Was bedeutet wir werden in naher Zukunft in der Lage sein, ähnlich starke Computer anzubauen. Zur Nutzung selbst, der Computer war für den Mensch, wie für uns auch, ein Werkzeug zur Informationssammlung, Kommunikation und natürlich auch Machtgewinn und Macht Erhaltung. Das Verhalten und die Interessen der Menschen wurde von diesem Computer ausgewertet und gespeichert und so ein Persönlickeitsprofil für einen jeden Menschen erstellt. Dieses wurde genutzt um potenzielle Gefährdungen für das System frühzeitig zu erkennen und künstliche Bedürfnisse zu erzeugen, um damit finanzielle Mittel und Einfluss zu steigern. Es diente außerdem als Berater für den jeweiligen Besitzer, da es die komplexen Zusammenhänge der Welt besser verstehen konnte als der einzelne Mensch an sich.
GEORGE Year: Unknown A paper airplane, which gives form to the feelings and emotions of a society through shapes, sound and rythm and flies over inhabited areas to project them. FRAU WILLERT, SOZIOLOGIN : Mein Team und Ich haben vor kurzem den Papierflieger gefunden. Wie aus Aufzeichnungen, Erzählungen, Dokumentationen und Lyrik hervor geht, war auch Er damals Teil der Gesellschaft. Er hat es geschafft, die Gefühle und Emotionen der Gesellschaft aufzunehmen und diese in Formen, Farben und Laute umzuwandeln, und diese auf sich selbst zu projezieren. Auch Er ist leider bei dem großen Kollaps abgestürzt und beschädigt worden. Aus seiner letzen Aufnahme geht hervor, dass die Gesellschaft zu Beginn der Aufzeichnung in einem zufriedenen Zustand war, Sie dann, als sich der Kollaps angekündigt hat, unruhiger und unglücklicher wurden, und letztendlich fast alles Leben ausgelöscht wurde.

GENITAL PLAY Year: Metropolis, 8th Moon of Circle 45 a. Co. (2100) Genital-like objects for non-binary sexual education.
ULEN, SEXOLOGIST : I was asked to research on and analyse the past 100 years concerning topics of gender equality and sexual freedom. Today, we are used to fluid identities, body modification, pluralist models of families and relationships and an open discourse about sexuality. Of course, this is a status quo that builds up upon a long development. People, activists as well as politicians, fought hard for what we have now. I was put in charge with the honorable task of presenting a timeline of the developments since 2050, the year of the End of Collapse. The start of my sexpedition was the archive of the Department for Gender Equality and Sexual Freedom (DGESF) in Peachville. They were one of the first departments that started working after the Collapse as people had the need to get organised regarding the described topics. The DGESF is run by elected representatives of the Peachville citizens. It is a democratic institution. Everyone can get involved and be elected. The tasks of DGESF are: Providing advice, connecting people, organising educational and communal events, distributing products for body modification/ birth control/ menstruation, and of course the archive. Today, I want to talk about one of my discoveries there. It is an educational game called “Genital Play”. The game was first introduced in 2085 by then-comissioner Ganya of DGESF. Back then, a lot of people already agreed on the idea of fluid genders and identities. The societal tendency was growing more and more open towards free decisions concern-

ing the own body, reproduction, sex and family models. This was already a big step compared to the years Before Collapse. Still, people had to practise their shared ideas in reality and realistic scenarios to be able to act according to their values. For this training, Ganya and others developed the Genital Play. It consisted of a toolbox filled with around 15 models of genitals. All of them had several holes, bumps and folds to be discovered. Genital Play could be used to open a playful discourse and practise on different topics, such as: a)Explore genitals and their characteristics to understand how they work/ what their functions could be. b) Practise stimulation on the body of one‘s own or others. c) Practise consensual sex: How can I get close to someone without crossing their boundaries? d)Understand the genital variety and the fact that no genital looks like the other e)Get a deeper understanding of non-binarism f)Practise genital care and hygiene. It was used for all ages in different educational surroundings. People could also get one for their home and practise with their kids. In 2120, the DGESF completed an extensive study on people‘s sexualities and behaviour with themselves and others. Backed by Peachville‘s citizens, they decided to stop producing Genital Play as the educational task seemed to be completed. Speaking thirty years after the last Genital Play was produced I can say that we still profit from this invention. Our society is very aware. I hope this will last for a long time.
STONES FROM THE ANTHROPOCENE Year: 2100 Natural and man-made materials became the new minerals and resources.

Und jetzt, nach langer Recherche, bin ich sehr stolz darauf, Ihnen endlich meine Ergebnisse präsentieren zu können: Diese Steine, die wir hier sehen, stammen aus einer Zeit weit vor uns, die wir das Anthropozän nennen. Die Menschen verwendeten damals synthetische Materialien wie Kunststoff, Stahl, Beton, Materialien, die heutzutage selten sind. Diese meist nicht recycelbaren Materialien sammelten sich im Laufe der Zeit in großen Mengen an und bildeten eine Schicht auf der Erde. Während und nach dem Kollaps wurden diese Materialien nicht mehr verwendet und kamen langsam wieder in den natürlichen Kreislauf zurück und bildeten etwas Neues.Und das war der Start der geologischen Ära, genannt Anthropozän, dem Zeitalter des Menschen, in dem die menschliche Aktivität einen großen und nachhaltigen Einfluss auf die Natur hinterlassen hat. Durch ihr Handeln ist der Mensch im Laufe

der Zeit zu einer globalen geophysikalischen Kraft geworden, die mit den mächtigsten Naturkräften verflochten ist. Und genau das ist es, was wir jetzt sehen. Im Grunde genommen schuf der Mensch in Verbindung mit der Natur ein neues Mineral. Und die Steine, die vor uns liegen, dienen uns heute als geologisches Zeugnis dieser Zeit. Sie sind erst am Anfang ihrer Formation, und deshalb kann man in dem, was man sieht, noch verschiedene Materialien erkennen, wie z.B. Kunststoff oder Styropor, in ihrer ursprünglichen Form, die noch nicht umgewandelt wurden. Wir erwarten, dass sie in Zukunft verändert werden. Wie wir alle wissen, besteht alles auf der Erde aus einer begrenzten Anzahl von Substanzen, Elementen und Atomen, die auf unterschiedliche Weise kombiniert werden. Egal ob vor 1 Million Jahren oder heute, es sind immer die gleichen Stoffe. Und diese Steine sind immer noch aus diesen Materialien gefertigt, nur werden sie auf ungewöhnliche Weise kombiniert.
