THE SCHOOL

INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAM

Founded in 1962, ASB is an international, independent, nonprofit, co-educational, university preparatory day school which serves the international and Spanish communities in Barcelona from pre-school to grade 12. ASB is accredited by the International Baccalaureate Organization, the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and is authorized by the Spanish and Catalan Ministries of Education. The school has a purpose-built facility located just south of Barcelona.

ASB offers a rigorous university preparatory program, taught in English, that prepares students for admission to top universities throughout the world.

MISSION Our mission is to empower pre-school through 12th grade students to become global citizens with the critical thinking skills and the self-confidence to maximize their potential.

ENROLLMENT There are 973 students from 60+ different nationalities enrolled in Pre-K through 12th grade, with 370 in the high school. Approximately 28% of the students are North American, 21% are Spanish, and 51% are from other countries.

FACULTY The ASB staff includes 150 faculty members (teachers and associates), 26 support staff and 19 administrators. The approximate composition of faculty by nationality is 61% from English speaking countries, 25% Spanish and 14% from other countries. More than 80% of our international teachers have advanced degrees.

STATEMENT ON IMPACT OF COVID-19 As Covid-19 impacted communities around the world our students have shown resilience and flexibility with ever changing restrictions at school and in the larger community.

We were lucky to return to on-campus learning in September 2020. During the 2020-21 school year, extracurricular activities were extremely limited, however for the 2021-22 school year and beyond, activities resumed with minor limitations.

Students in grades 9 and 10 access a curriculum which follows Common Core (English, Social Studies and Math) and NGSS science standards where all students take Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Earth & Environment. There are differentiated levels for mathematics and language learning (English, Spanish, and Catalan) in each grade.

More than half of our grade 9 and 10 students also complete local requirements in Castellano and Catalan Language and Literature, and Spanish History and Geography.

Participation in electives has been limited given other academic requirements, but some opportunities have included: Visual Arts, Music, Information Technology, Model United Nations, Speech and Debate, and Entrepreneurship. All students participate in developing a wide range of community service activities throughout the year.

Graduates earn a U.S. high school diploma and, in grades 11-12, can additionally pursue the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. 70% percent of IB diploma students in the class of 2023 earned the bilingual diploma and many students graduate having achieved a level of language appropriate for university instruction in English, Spanish, and Catalan.

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) is a demanding, two-year course of study leading to external examinations. At ASB, the IBDP is an open enrollment program. In 2023, 86 ASB graduates earned the full IB Diploma, with an average score of 35 points.

GRADING SYSTEM The American School of Barcelona uses a Standards Based Reporting System. In grades 9-12, student progress is reported using a 1-7 point scale aligned with the International Baccalaureate Programme, reflecting a standards-based assessment approach.

Due to the high mobility of the student population, ASB does not rank students, calculate GPA, or convert ASB grades to any other grading scale. ASB transcripts only report grades earned at ASB. Students who have transferred into ASB after the beginning of high school will have separate transcripts to reflect their previous education.

SERVICE LEARNING AND ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES ASB prides itself not only on our high academic achievement, but also on the ability of our students to make a positive impact on our community through ongoing engagement. Service learning is incorporated into the High School curriculum, as well as offered throughout the year as after-school programs, overnight and extended trips. Students are encouraged to develop their own service learning and CAS projects, or participate in one or more of the following established programs: RefugArt - Student-initiated activity to raise awareness and support for refugees around the world through art production and exhibitions. Annual events have collaborated with the UNHCR and other international aid organizations.

Language and Career Partnerships - Students work with local organizations (schools, hospitals and corporations) to support English language development for adults who share their professional experiences with our students.

International Service Learning Trips - Student groups in recent years have traveled to Botswana to support refugee education and sustainable development, as well as to Peru to support medical service delivery in the Amazon communities.

In addition, there are numerous clubs and extracurricular activities that offer students leadership, problem-solving, performance, and team-building skills: Yearbook Club Eco Club Model United Nations Musical theater and performances New European Speech, Debate and Acting Association (NESDA) Varsity sport teams (basketball, soccer, volleyball, cross country, flag football, and tennis)
