We are writing to let you know that, as expected, the State of Emergency in Portugal has been extended for another 15 days and will be in place until 17th of April 2020. This decision reflects the assessment that the slower spread of Covid-19 in the country is largely owed to the collective effort of containment. This is positive, and April may be a decisive month to help limit the outbreak.

We are all in this together, and we all must continue to follow the measures that have been in place for protection and isolation. We are happy to say that, so far, we have registered no Covid-19 positive cases within our team and our community. We appeal to everyone to continue actively contributing to stop the spread in Vale do Lobo. The quicker we conform, the quicker this will be put behind us all.

Meanwhile, we continue to support our community in all ways possible. Our Club Team remains operational, working remotely.

WE ARE HERE FOR YOU! Other essential services also remain functioning, while following health authority rules. Resort Reception and Resort Control teams provide all necessary assistance. Our construction, maintenance, housekeeping, gardening, alarms and telecom teams are also working and taking care of your properties and Resort grounds. Our Real Estate team is also working remotely.

Our Wellness Centre and Golf Courses remain closed, even if the maintenance team continues to work hard to maintain the courses in immaculate condition for that first round of golf afterwards.

It is time to stay home, stay positive and protect the collective wellbeing of our community. We appeal to everyone to continue to be responsible and respectful. Although physical distancing is a necessity, we also want to make sure we continue staying in touch and strengthen our community through several online initiatives. Our Vale do Lobo Community group has brought together over 120 members already and keeps on growing. Don´t forget to check our Instagram #stayhome highlight with plenty of resources on how to stay calm, healthy and connected. We share daily live mindfulness classes, online concerts and immunity boosting tips.

AUTOGENIC DRAINAGE – PHYSIOTHERAPY TIPS We’re all staying home as a preventative measure at this difficult time. While we do so, it’s important to stay healthy by following the advice of physiotherapists. Today we’re talking about clearing our airways using Autogenic Drainage. Cristina Pedro, the Vale do Lobo Royal Spa Coordinator & Physiotherapist, has brought us this technique in which she teaches us to breathe using different lung volumes to transport secretions from the peripheral airways to the central airways.

For this reason, correct hand hygiene is an essential habit, to prevent diseases and promote safety and public health.

The procedure for proper hand hygiene involves the following steps:

NATURE IS WHAT WE MISS THE MOST: DREAMING OF WALKING IN NATURE WITH SUZANNE RADFORD Recently, much has been said about the benefits of therapy associated with nature. Have you heard about Forest bathing? Even the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, designed her garden for the Chelsea Flower Show based on this practice. To tell you a little about this new trend that seems to come to stay, we interviewed Suzanne Radford, Forest bathing guide, certified by FTI and practitioner of this therapy based in the Algarve. What is Forest bathing?

Shinrin yoku is the Japanese name for forest bathing and it means to bathe or immerse one’s self in the forest atmosphere. Dr Qing Li in the 1980s identified office workers in Tokyo sitting indoors at their desks for long periods of time were showing signs of stress. He created health programmes including walks in forests to combat this and observed how rejuvenated people were afterwards, they felt ‘alive’ and ‘energised’. He carried out research into why this is so and gathered scientific evidence as to how time spent in nature can help us both physiologically and emotionally.

How does forest bathing work?

A forest bathing walk typically takes two hours as I guide people through a series of ‘invitations’ to awaken the senses and relax the mind and body. I ask people to notice details like shapes and colours, to listen to the sounds around them, and to smell the scents whilst providing moments for people to share their thoughts and experiences which is optional, silence is also welcome. The aim is for people to unwind and to deepen their connection with nature and to allow time for one’s self.

Why is it good for us?

It is well documented that time spent in green spaces can help reduced levels of the stress hormone cortisol, improve sleep, lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, reduce the risk of type II diabetes, reduce anxiety and depression. Studies show that breathing in the organic compounds emitted by trees can help combat a variety of illnesses. These essential oils are called phytoncides, they are anti-microbial and released by trees to protect themselves from disease. When we breathe them in they boost our natural killer cells (NK) and our immune system.

How often do we need a green prescription?

As little as 20 minutes a day spent amongst trees can benefit us but a minimum of 10 hours a month is recommended to increase NK cells the positive effects staying in the body for around seven days afterwards.

Why do we need a guide to walk in nature?

Walking with a guide who is a trained forest therapy practitioner can help you feel at ease and access all the forest has to offer in a safe and gentle way. Of course, anyone can practice forest bathing for themselves but like with yoga or going to a gym the quality of practice and the amount is questionable when we are on our own.

Why is forest bathing so special to you?

Whether I am in a forest or by the sea, nature is ever giving and there is always something new to see, to learn and if I need a digital detox or I am feeling worried about something a walk in nature helps. The fractals of light through the trees when I look up, the smell of the forest after the rain and the taste of a sea breeze in the air. Along with feeling well it’s the awe and beauty I experience that makes it special. I talk about the 3 Cs – Calm, Contentment and Clarity, they are just some of the things a forest bathing walk can provide.

MAKE YOUR OWN INDOOR GARDEN Spring has now sprung, making this the perfect time to throw yourself into gardening. Start by learning how to pot a plant properly, and watch your garden begin to flourish. We’re also giving you a helping hand by passing on some valuable suggestions from Maria Inês Pinto, Head of the Gardening Section of Vale do Lobo.

What you’ll need: • Expanded clay; • Geotextile; • Compost; • Seeds or the plant you want.

Now all you have to do is follow these steps to pot a plant correctly:

Place a piece or section of geotextile at the bottom of the pot to prevent the drainage layer from falling out of the hole in the bottom of the pot;

Create a drainage layer (prevents water from accumulating and leading to roots rotting). This layer is usually made up of expanded clay.

Lay the geotextile out between this layer and the compost - this prevents earth from draining away with any excess water;

Layer the compost into the pot and plant the seed or plant.

Then make sure you water your plant and that you place it in a pleasant environment so that it can grow to be strong and healthy!

Agora é só seguir as etapas para plantar um vaso corretamente:

Coloque um caco ou um pouco de tela no fundo do vaso, para impedir que a camada drenante saia pelos buracos do mesmo;

Coloque uma camada drenante (impede a acumulação de água e apodrecimento das raízes). Esta camada é, normalmente, composta por argila expandida.

Estenda a tela geotêxtil entre esta camada e a terra vegetal – isto impede que a água da rega em excesso seja escoada com sujidade

O que é o Forest bathing?

Shirin-yoku é o nome japonês utilizado para Forest bathing, que significa “mergulhar” na floresta. Na década de 1980, o Dr. Qing Li identificou alguns funcionários de escritório em Tóquio, sentados por longos períodos de tempo, com elevados sinais de stress. Nesse sentido, resolveu então desenvolver programas de saúde que incluíam caminhadas na floresta a fim de combater essa tendência, e a partir desta iniciativa foilhe possível constatar que as pessoas da experiência reagiram de forma deveras rejuvenescida, ao sentirem-se mais vivas e com energia. Posteriormente, realizou várias pesquisas e juntou provas científicas de como o tempo despendido na natureza nos pode ajudar tanto fisiologicamente como emocionalmente.

Como funciona o Forest bathing?

A terapia Forest bathing normalmente tem a duração de duas horas, pois é guiada através de uma série de inspirações e convites para despertar os sentidos e relaxar o corpo e a mente. Neste processo, é solicitado às pessoas que observem os detalhes, as formas e as cores, que escutem os sons à sua volta e cheirem os aromas envolventes, proporcionando ainda momentos opcionais para que partilhem os seus pensamentos e experiências, sendo o silêncio igualmente bem-vindo. O objetivo é que as pessoas relaxem e aprofundem a sua ligação com a natureza, permitindo-lhe desta forma ter tempo para si.

Por que é que é bom para nós?

Está cientificamente comprovado que o tempo usufruído em espaços verdes nos pode ajudar a reduzir significativamente os níveis de cortisol – a hormona do stress, a melhorar o sono, e ainda a diminuir a pressão arterial, o colesterol, o risco de diabetes tipo II, bem como a ansiedade e a depressão. Estudos demonstram que respirar os compostos orgânicos emitidos pelas árvores pode ajudar a combater várias doenças e patologias. Esses óleos essenciais, denominados fitonídeos, são antimicrobianos libertados pelas plantas e árvores para se protegerem de doenças. Quando respiramos, elas aumentam as nossas células assassinas naturais (NK) e o nosso sistema imunitário.

Quantas vezes precisamos de uma receita “verde”?

Apenas 20 minutos por dia passados perto das árvores e das plantas exteriores podem ser benéficos para a nossa saúde, no entanto recomenda-se um mínimo de 10 horas por mês para aumentar as células NK, cujos efeitos positivos permanecem no organismo cerca de sete dias.

Precisamos de um guia para caminhar na natureza?

Ao ser acompanhado por um guia profissional especializado em terapia florestal, sentir-se-á mais tranquilo e descontraído para descobrir tudo aquilo que a natureza tem para lhe oferecer, de uma forma muito agradável e segura. Apesar de qualquer pessoa poder realizar a experiência Forest bathing por iniciativa própria, tal como acontece com o yoga ou o ginásio, a qualidade e a quantidade dedicada à prática são sempre questionáveis quando as realizamos sozinhos.

Por que é que o Forest bathing é tão especial para si?

Seja numa floresta ou à beira-mar, a natureza dá-nos sempre a possibilidade de descobrir algo novo, de aprender e, se necessário, fazer um detox digital. Se simplesmente estou preocupada com algo, uma caminhada na natureza ajuda-me sempre a superar e a encontrar soluções, quando olho para o céu, contemplo os fractais de luz através das árvores e sinto o cheiro da floresta após a chuva ou o aroma da brisa do mar.

Além de me fazer sentir bem, o que torna esta prática especial é a admiração e a beleza que experiencio no decorrer da experiência. Em inglês, falo sobre os 3C’s (Calm, Contentment and Clarity) – Calma, Satisfação e Clareza, pois são algumas das coisas que esta maravilhosa caminhada Forest bathing pode oferecer.

Para lhe falar um pouco sobre esta nova tendência, que parece ser para ficar, entrevistámos Suzanne Radford, sediada no Algarve, que se trata de uma guia de Forest bathing, certificada pela FTI e exímia praticante desta terapia.

VDL PHARMA – HEALTH & CARE RECOMENDAÇÕES GERAIS DE HIGIENE As nossas mãos estão constantemente expostas e em contato com superfícies repletas de microrganismos (vírus, bactérias e fungos), que podem ser muito perigosos e causar infeções graves!

Por isso, a higienização correta das mãos é um hábito imprescindível, para prevenir doenças e promover a segurança e saúde pública.

Na VDL Pharma - Health & Care encontra os produtos adequados para lavar e desinfetar as suas mãos.

O procedimento para a higiene correta das mãos envolve os seguintes passos: 1. Molhar as mãos com água limpa e colocar sabonete suficiente, para cobrir todas as superfícies das mãos (mantendo um contato durante o mínimo de 40 a 60 segundos); 2. Esfregar vigorosamente as palmas e as costas das mãos entrelaçando os dedos e lavar muito bem entre eles, sem esquecer os polegares; 3. Lavar bem as unhas, esfregando as pontas dos dedos na palma da mão contrária; 4. Friccionar também cada um dos pulsos com a mão contrária; 5. Enxaguar bem as mãos com água limpa; 6. Secar cuidadosamente as mãos com uma toalha limpa ou com toalhete de papel descartável; 7. Para garantir a desinfeção total das mãos, pode ainda utilizar uma solução alcoólica (70% v/v) ou um gel antissético (mantendo um contacto durante o mínimo de 20 a 30 segundos).

DRENAGEM AUTÓGENA – UMA ORIENTAÇÃO DA FISIOTERAPIA Neste momento que se vive, o paradigma sensato obriga a que se fique em casa por prevenção. Neste sentido, a fisioterapia surge como uma orientação para facilitar a eliminação de secreções pulmonares por meio da Drenagem Autógena Cristina Pedro, Supervisora & Fisioterapeuta de Vale do Lobo, apresenta-nos esta técnica ao ensina-nos a utilizar a respiração em diferentes volumes pulmonares para transportar secreções das vias aéreas periféricas para as centrais.

Duração da sessão: 20 a 45 minutos Escolha uma posição (sentado ou reclinado): 1. Limpe o nariz e a garganta soprando e assoando.

2. Inspire lentamente pelo nariz; mantenha as vias aéreas superiores abertas.

Use o diafragma e / ou o abdómen, se possível.

3. Respire fundo, sustenha por momentos. Expire o tempo que puder.

4. Respire fundo lentamente; sustenha a respiração por 3 segundos.

Mantenha as vias aéreas superiores abertas para preencher todo o pulmão com ar.

5. Expire lentamente pela boca. Mantenha a glote, a garganta e a boca abertas.

Evite respirar fundo, as vias aéreas podem entrar em colapso, você ouvirá um assobio.

6. Use os músculos abdominais para ajudar na respiração pulmonar baixa e depois expulse o máximo de ar possível.

7. Coloque a mão na parte superior do peito e sinta a vibração do muco. Baixa vibração significa que o muco está nas vias aéreas grandes e alta vibração significa que o muco está nas pequenas vias aéreas. Este feedback permite ajustar a técnica.

8. Repita o ciclo. Inspire lentamente para impedir o retorno do muco.

9. Continue respirando lentamente até que o muco se acumule e se mova para cima.

10. Tossir apenas se um huff não tiver movido o muco para a boca.

Terminou o ciclo; relaxe por dois minutos e repita, se necessário.

Escrevemo-vos para vos informar que, como esperado, o Estado de Emergência em Portugal foi prorrogado por mais 15 dias e permanecerá em vigor até 17 de Abril de 2020. Esta decisão reflete a avaliação de que a propagação mais lenta do Covid-19 no país deve-se em grande parte devido ao esforço coletivo de contenção. Esta avaliação é positiva, e abril pode ser um mês decisivo para ajudar a limitar o surto.

Estamos todos juntos, e todos devemos continuar a seguir as medidas que foram adotadas para proteção e isolamento. Ficamos felizes por vos comunicar que, até ao momento, não registamos casos positivos do Covid-19 na nossa equipa e na nossa comunidade. Apelamos a todos que continuem a contribuir ativamente para impedir a disseminação em Vale do Lobo. Quanto mais rápido nos conformarmos, mais rapidamente ultrapassaremos juntos este desafio.

Até lá, continuamos a apoiar a nossa comunidade de todas as maneiras possíveis. O Club Team permanece operacional, trabalhando remotamente. Estamos aqui para todos vós. As nossas equipas de construção, manutenção, limpeza, jardinagem, alarmes e telecomunicações também estão a trabalhar e a cuidar das propriedades e áreas comuns do resort. A nossa equipa de Imobiliária encontra-se igualmente a trabalhar remotamente.

O Wellness Centre e campos de golfe permanecem fechados, ainda que a equipa de manutenção continue a trabalhar arduamente para manter os campos em perfeitas condições para a primeira partida de golfe que se realizará pós isolamento.

Agora o momento é de ficar em casa, permanecer positivo e proteger o bem-estar coletivo da nossa comunidade. Apelamos a todos para que continuem a ser responsáveis e respeitosos.
