Nature's Crafty Trickster

As skilled predators, Cape Foxes play a pivotal role in maintaining the delicate ecological balance of their habitats. They actively regulate populations of small mammals and insects, contributing to the overall health of an ecosystem.

They are known for their exceptional problemsolving skills. They have been observed using their intelligence to overcome challenges, such as accessing food sources and fnding shelter. Their resourcefulness and ability to adapt to various situations demonstrate their craftiness in navigating their environment.

A delightful pair of Cape Foxes have made Val de Vie Estate their home. Scientifcally known as Vulpes chama, Cape Foxes are true foxes and the smallest canid (a mammal of the dog family) in South Africa. Their exquisite silver-grey fur, accentuated by large pointed ears and dark colouration around their mouths, adds elegance to their appearance. Standing at a mere 350mm at the shoulders and weighing approximately 2.5 – 3kgs, these foxes exhibit remarkable agility, with their bushy serving as a clever counterbalance during their swift and nimble manoeuvres.

Thriving in harsh desert environments, Cape Foxes display exceptional adaptability. Their fur, dense and insulating, provides them respite from the scorching heat of the day and cold nights. Equipped with acute hearing and excellent night vision, they effortlessy hunt and forage in even the dimmest of light. Cape Foxes boast a diverse palate, embodying the true essence of an omnivore. They relish a wide range of delicacies, including small mammals, reptiles, insects, birds, fruits, and seeds. Fear not; these charming creatures pose no threat to children or pets. As our new neighbours acquaint themselves with their surroundings and settle into their habitat, we kindly request all residents to give them space within the bio-diversity corridor. Additionally, for the safety of all, please ensure that dogs are kept on leashes at all times
