What does living well mean to you? Ask 10 residents what living well means and you’ll get 10 different answers. For one, it might be that first cup of coffee after a morning run through the 40-hectare renosterveld biodiversity corridor. For another, it’s raising children in a place with nearly 1 000 hectares to roam, while others delight in spotting the many birds that call the Estate home. And then, of course, there are the horses – not just the polo ponies, but the Akhal-Tekes, a rare ancient breed, with metallic coats that shimmer in the afternoon light. Resident Tonya

Invested in Living Well

Ehlers keeps a small number of these endangered horses as part of her breeding programme and among them is the gorgeous Gwyn, who is featured on the cover. On the Estate, living well also means access to exceptional facilities. Construction of the Estate’s largest 4000m² wellness facility, at Val de Vie Evergreen, is progressing well. It is also reflected in the work of The Val de Vie Foundation, which is celebrating 10 years of meaningful contributions and has donated over R50 million to initiatives that empower the local community. Residents

are proud to be part of this ongoing commitment. Over R319 million in property sales were recorded in just three months. Beyond the numbers, these figures represent families choosing to build their lives here and homeowners who also know that their property investments benefit from capital growth, supporting financial well-being. So, what does living well really look like? It’s about balance and the quiet joy of living with intention. And on the Estate, it is found in the small things, every single day.

Life in the Biodiversity Corridor

Did you know? Life and nature coexist beautifully on Val de Vie Estate. The Estate is home to a magnificent 40-hectare renosterveld biodiversity corridor, one of the rarest ecosystems in South Africa. A rich community of 29 mammals, 950 plant species, 169 bird species (found in and around the biodiversity corridor) and 15 species of dragonflies and damselflies live here. This makes Val de Vie Estate one of the country’s most ecologically diverse residential estates, providing a lifestyle unlike any other. And while nature flourishes, so do our residents, knowing they are safe with more than 600 cameras, 17km of electrified fencing and a dedicated on-site ambulance and team that has already responded to more than 337 emergencies this year alone. It is no wonder that Val de Vie Estate is known as the “Valley of Life”.

Sarah Vos has been around horses for as long as she can remember. Now, as the Riding School Manager at the Val de Vie Equestrian Club, she’s the one who makes sure everything runs smoothly. Let’s meet the woman behind the reins.

Sarah’s love for horses started when she was only a few months old. “One of my first words was ‘horse’,” she says. Growing up at the South African Jockey Academy, horses were part of everyday life. By age three, she was already riding, spending her childhood in the heart of KwaZulu-Natal’s horse scene, going to races and competitions and enjoying picnics in the horse paddocks.

However, early on, her bond with horses was put to the test. “I had a terrible fall when I was seven years old,” Sarah recalls. “But I was back in the saddle a week later.” That’s when her parents knew this wasn’t just a phase.

Sarah, who has worked in the equestrian industry for almost 10 years, spends her days teaching lessons, training horses and handling admin. After a friend introduced her to the Pearl Valley Stables, where she began as Yard Manager, she found her way to Val de Vie Estate. She assisted with show management for three years at the Val de Vie Equestrian Club, helping wherever she could. When the opportunity to manage the club arose,

she jumped at the chance. “I could not refuse the opportunity as it has always been a passion of mine to help riders of all ages reach their potential.”

Those moments when everything clicks, the “aha” moments in lessons, are what make it all worthwhile for Sarah.

Val de Vie Estate’s equestrian offering is exceptional. “We are situated in such an amazing environment where you can do so much,” she remarks. “You can get coffee or hot chocolate, you can see wildlife or you can even watch polo on horseback – all in a safe environment.”

The Val de Vie Equestrian Club offers something for everyone, from one-on-one lessons, group lessons, pony rides for the little ones and theory classes when the weather turns. On why theoretical classes are essential, Sarah says, “Riding is just part of it. Knowing the horse and why you do what you do is just as important.”

For those who haven’t ridden before but might want to try, Sarah’s advice is simple: “Once you start, you will never want to stop. Horses are such incredible animals.”

Outside of the stables, Sarah likes spending time reading or catching up with friends and family.

If you’ve been thinking about getting in the saddle, get in touch with Sarah and the team – you’ll feel right at home.

“Do not judge me by my successes; judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again… I have walked that long walk to freedom”
– NELSON MANDELA, LONG WALK TO FREEDOM (1994)

Mandela Day 2025 –A Final Step to Freedom

On Sunday 11 February 1990, Tata Madiba took his final steps to freedom as he walked out of the Drakenstein Correctional Centre (formerly Victor Verster Prison) onto the R301, which has recently been renamed Nelson Mandela Freedom Road. Today, residents are reminded of the area’s historic significance when they drive past the new sign at the end of Kliprug Road.

A life-sized bronze statue adorns the entrance to the prison, where hundreds of local and international visitors gather regularly to take photos in front of the iconic figure. Residents of the region are privileged to live in one of the most historically significant areas in South Africa – and the world. Madiba’s influence has resonated globally as he sought to unite South Africans in an increasingly polarised world. His ideas have promoted solidarity, transcended differences and embraced the concept of shared humanity.

On 18 July 2025, the Val de Vie Foundation, in collaboration with the Hope Through Action (HTA) Franschhoek Valley Community Sports Centre, joined hands to honour Madiba’s legacy in a celebration of community and compassion.

One hundred children from the @HomeLearning Programme and fifty residents and friends from Val de Vie Estate and neighbouring estates came together in honour of Mandela’s life and legacy for a joyful morning filled with fun, food, gifts and laughter.

Athi Ndamane, HTA Centre Manager, coordinated the celebration with support from the Val de Vie Foundation (which has proudly supported HTA since the Foundation’s inception), Rickety Bridge Winery (a key HTA donor), Brenthurst Wealth Management (represented by André Basson) and Bootlegger at the Drakenstein Sentrum.

The morning kicked off with warm welcome speeches from representatives of the Val de Vie Foundation, Rickety Bridge Estate, Brenthurst Wealth, Pastor Thembelani Msolo, a warden of the Drakenstein Correctional Centre and HTA/SCORE partner Stefan Howells.

The central theme that echoed throughout all the speeches and indeed the day itself was the “Y” in South Africa’s national flag, connoting the convergence of diverse elements within South African society, moving forward with unity.

Melissa and Simon Crosbie, the new owners of Rickety Bridge Estate, shared their desire to build “a bridge for all in the Valley,” emphasising their commitment to social mobility through funding Hope Through Action and transformation through community partnerships.

André Basson, with his impressive ability to communicate in English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa, delighted the children as he unpacked their

Brenthurst-donated backpacks.

Volunteers joined the children in games such as crosscountry races, “drie stokkies” and tug of war. They also shared reading sessions in the Learning Centre and prepared soup for the children’s parents – each activity more joyful than the next. The faces of the children beamed when they finally received their backpacks, Val de Vie Foundation water bottles and delicious boerewors rolls provided by Rickety Bridge Estate, after all the fun activities.

“We were blessed to have a sunny, rain-free day for the event, but it was really chilly in the Franschhoek Valley Community Sports Centre, Lorraine Hadfield, Val de Vie Foundation Advisor, remarks. “Our grateful thanks go to Deirdré Bowers, who runs our local Bootlegger at the Drakenstein Sentrum, for donating 60 tasty cups of coffee and muffins to the hardworking volunteers.”

Deidré says: “We believe Mandela Day is a time to reflect on service, community and the human spirit. Together we can work towards a future driven by hope, respect and action – highlighting our commitment to a meaningful change, starting with us.” Shared values indeed.

A heartfelt thank you to all the Val de Vie Estate residents who generously gave their time to join the Val de Vie Foundation, in collaboration with Hope Through Action, for this wonderful celebration.

1. Volunteers kick off the day with a fun icebreaker activity.

2. Rickety Bridge Estate treats the children to delicious boerewors rolls.

5 Feathery Fun Facts About the Barn Swallow Migration

WORLD TRAVELLERS

Barn swallows are among the most widespread swallow species, found on every continent except Antarctica. Each year, an estimated 60 to 130 million swallows from Europe and Asia migrate to Africa for the southern summer.

TRUE NIGHT OWLS (SORT OF)

While most birds rest at night, barn swallows sometimes fly through the dark to avoid predators, conserve energy in the cooler air and make the most of calmer nighttime skies.

LONG DISTANCE, NO PROBLEM

To return north, barn swallows cross the vast Sahara Desert and Mediterranean Sea, a staggering feat for a bird barely longer than a pencil.

The Tale of the Barn Swallow

With its glossy navy-blue back, russet-red throat and elegantly forked tail, the barn swallow (Hirundo rustica), known as the Europese swaeltjie in Afrikaans, is a welcome sight across open skies and often spotted skimming gracefully above the lakes, paddocks and pastures of Val de Vie Estate. Small, agile and social, the barn swallow weighs only around 20g, but don’t be fooled, this dainty bird is one of nature’s most determined long-distance travellers.

REFUEL AND REPEAT

Their migration isn’t one long flight. Swallows rely on stopover sites where they can rest, drink and feed. Some birds return to the exact same sites each year, relying on memory and instinct to navigate their journey.

SMALL BIRD, BIG MILES

During migration, a barn swallow can fly up to 200km a day and may travel around 12 000km in just over a month. That’s the distance from Val de Vie Estate to Paris.

So the next time you see a blur of navy blue and chestnut darting through the air, give a nod to one of the world’s most well-travelled birds.

Every year, barn swallows migrate thousands of kilometres between Europe and subSaharan Africa, swapping breeding grounds in the north for warmer climes in the south. They typically arrive in South Africa around October (sometimes as early as September), drawn by our mild weather and the abundance of insects in our landscapes. Open fields, grasslands and accessible water sources make the Estate an ideal seasonal stopover, offering everything a swallow could want before the long return trek northward in March or April.

Barn swallows are highly adaptable birds and prefer human-made structures for nesting, building neat mud-and-grass cup nests in barns, sheds or under eaves. Outside of breeding season, they gather in large flocks, often perching in reedbeds or on telephone wires, chattering and swooping in unison.

Barn swallows feed on flying insects, catching their meals mid-air with impressive acrobatics. They’re also intelligent and alert, using alarm calls to warn others of nearby predators, while selecting nest sites in hard-to-reach places for added safety.

Protecting the Soldier Viooltjie

As part of the ongoing biodiversity study on Val de Vie Estate, another three populations of the threatened plant species Lachenalia reflexa, commonly known as the soldier viooltjie, have been identified. This discovery brings the number of threatened species now protected within the biodiversity corridor to an impressive 30 species.

This Western Cape endemic, once reasonably common, is now restricted to a small area on the lowlands, including Darling, the Cape Peninsula and Franschhoek. Sadly, the remaining population is small, estimated at fewer than 6 500 mature individuals and is found in small, isolated subpopulations. As a result, the species is considered severely fragmented and continues to decline due to ongoing habitat loss and degradation, making every new sighting a small but significant victory for conservation.

The Viljoen Legacy –A Heritage Forged in Gold

Some legacies are written in books. Ours are written in gold.

More than 75 years ago, Viljoen Jewellers was founded on a simple watchmaker’s bench, guided by magnified precision and an unwavering commitment to craftsmanship. From these humble origins in a quiet town, a legacy began to take form – shaped by dedication, artistry and timeless design.

As the years progressed, so did our craft. What began with watchmaking naturally evolved into fine jewellery. With each generation, the vision was refined, the techniques sharpened and the reputation strengthened. Our commitment to handmade excellence remained constant, even as we adopted new tools, introduced fresh ideas and incorporated modern sensibilities.

Growth brought transformation. The workshop expanded. Processes became more efficient. Yet our roots in bespoke craftsmanship never wavered. Each chapter in our story has been marked

by innovation grounded in heritage, a balance between tradition and evolution.

A pivotal moment came with the expansion of our design language: a deeper focus on personalised, emotionally resonant jewellery that reflects not just luxury, but connection. Our identity grew stronger, shaped by those who shared our passion and carried the torch forward with quiet integrity.

Today, Viljoen Jewellers stands as a symbol of generational excellence – a brand where every piece carries echoes of the past and promises the future. From the first sketch to the final sparkle, we continue to craft more than jewellery. We forge legacy – one story, one detail, one masterpiece at a time.

This is who we are.

This is our heritage.

This is the Viljoen legacy.

Written in gold.

Home is Where the Eggs Are

The most obvious example of an organism having a “property” is the bird’s nest, a safe place where a bird lays its eggs until they hatch. Residents might notice that the definition doesn’t include the word structure, simply because different species of birds have varying ideas of what a nest should be.

Several ground-dwelling birds, such as lapwings and plovers, lay their eggs on the ground. The eggs are highly camouflaged, blending into the surrounding pebbles and rocks. Occasionally, when the parent bird leaves the nest to feed or drink, it may even cover the eggs with soil for extra protection, further concealing them from view. Interestingly, the eggs of ground nesters are usually pointed at one end, ensuring the eggs roll in a circle rather than straying too far.

Some birds, like the ostrich, take a more energetic approach by scraping a shallow hole in the ground in which to store the eggs, keeping them from rolling away.

Doves and pigeons use a slightly more structural approach; a few twigs on a tree branch or ledge are considered adequate to support the eggs and nestlings. When strong winds pick up, these nests don’t always hold, which is why it’s not unusual to see their chicks ending up on the ground. On a larger scale, many raptors use branches to form a more substantial platform for their nests.

Thicket-dwelling birds usually build a classic bowl-shaped nest the typical one that most people are familiar with. The shape o the nest keeps the eggs from rolling and is often tucked safely high up in shrubs and trees, which helps protect them.

Some bowl nests even have roofs over to protect the parent bird from the sun and rain. Many finches use this pattern. Perhaps th best-known of these nests are the woven nests of weavers and bishops, often considered by naturalists as the most complex nest made by any bird. The hamerkop also builds a roofed nest, adding to the structure over the years, which can cause some of these nests to eventually weigh up to five tons, making them the heaviest nests built by any single bird.

Fitness that Keeps Evolving

Exciting New Additions for the Fitness Community

Val de Vie Estate continually finds new ways to enhance the sports and wellness facilities for our community. That’s why two bold additions have recently been made to the fitness offering, bringing residents better ways to train.

Dive In with the New Starting Platforms at the Indoor Pool

For those who live for water, there’s something new to power up your swim sessions. Two sleek starting platforms have been installed in lanes 2 and 3, at the indoor pool’s deep end, at the Val de Vie Sports & Leisure Centre. These starting platforms will help swimming enthusiasts perfect their dives and stroke techniques, refine their form and elevate their overall swimming experience.

HYROX-Standard Astro Track Coming Soon

By the end of the year, a purpose-built, two-lane HYROX-standard astro track will be introduced at The Yard Wellness Centre. This astro, also referred to as a turf track, will be the first of its kind on the Estate. The track will support HYROX-style workouts and functional training, bringing a global standard of training right to your doorstep. To celebrate the launch, the team at The Yard Gym is planning a fun, in-house HYROX event where residents can put their strength, speed and stamina to the test – no experience needed. More details will be shared in the coming months.

Please note that the astro will only be available outside scheduled Fit45 timeslots to maintain a safe and effective training space. Residents are kindly asked to respect these dedicated times.

DID YOU KNOW?

Both The Yard Gym and the Val de Vie Sports & Leisure Centre Gym are busiest between 07:00 and 09:00 all year round. Residents who prefer a quieter space or a slower pace are encouraged to plan their workouts outside of peak hours.

Coffee the Plato Way

Making coffee at Platō is a bit like muscle memory mixed with instinct. The baristas weigh every shot –grounds in, espresso out – because they know that even a gram can change the flavour. The Platō House Blend has become something of a signature at their stores, a mix of speciality-grade Arabica beans from Tanzania, Guatemala and Colombia. It’s what gives their coffee that familiar taste of caramel, chocolate and a hint of biscuit that regulars come back for.

There are two recipes the team counts on. For an espresso, they use 19g of coffee to get a 40g shot in about 31 seconds – smooth, balanced and just right. For a ristretto, it’s the same amount of coffee but a shorter pull; 30g in 25 seconds, a little richer, with that deep chocolatey edge. Milk drinks get the same attention. Milk is steamed to exactly 60°C, the sweet spot where it turns velvety and brings out its natural sweetness. In a latte, cappuccino or flat white, that silky milk meets the espresso in perfect balance. It’s a small detail, but it’s what makes a Platō coffee taste like, well, Platō coffee.

Residents can grab a cup of Platō coffee Monday to Saturday from 06:00 to 18:00 and on Sunday from 07:00 to 18:00.

WINE OF THE MONTH

VAL DE VIE MÉTHODE CAP CLASSIQUE CUVÉE DE VIE

The grapes for the Cuvée de Vie are carefully hand-picked in the fresh early morning hours and sourced exclusively from coastal and near-coastal vineyards. The cooler climate in these areas gives the wine its lively zest and refreshing crispness, setting this Méthode Cap Classique apart.

The MCC delivers a soft green tint and greets the nose with fresh citrus and lime aromas. After resting in the bottle for 12 months, gentle notes of caramel, toast and nougat emerge, adding subtle complexity to the flavour. On the palate, notes of bright red berries are complemented by ripe peach and crisp apple and balanced by delicate hints of yeast.

This MCC is crafted to pair with a range of moments, from leisurely breakfasts that pair beautifully with Franschhoek trout and citrus hollandaise to more formal dinner parties featuring artisanal breads, rich pâtés and a fine selection of cheeses.

A 10% discount will be applied when you purchase a case of six bottles of Val de Vie Méthode Cap Classique Cuvée de Vie in September.
