preface

As a part of the curriculum at the National Institute of Design, semster IV students are required to take up a simple product design project at the end of the semester. This project is expected to follow the design process and is supposed to be completed in six weeks.

Attachable Pocket for Indian Wear | Simple Product Design

The students are expected to implement what they learnt in the foundation year and the second year, into the design scenario. The course exposes the student to the application of design process in an elaborate manner.

The brief for my project was to design a wearable storage compartment for Indian wear.

The duration of this project was from March 20, 2017 to April 28, 2017.

how we started The first task we needed to complete was to find out all problems around the institute.

We sat together with our guides. We discussed all the possibilities for design. One of us started listing down all the areas at NID that can be looked at to find design opportunities.

We devided ourselves into four groups of four people and assigned one area to each group.

The areas that we shortlisted after the discussion were: 1. Student Mess and Canteen 2. Workshops 3. Studios 4. Hostel Area All the groups were to go to the respective areas and find the problems that can be solved by simple design intervention. My group consisted of Shefali Bohra, Aditya Vora, Abhishek MR and I. The area we studied was Student Hostels.

Each group sat together and discussed the criteria for how to go about finding oppurtunities and problems.

We discussed and decided upon the means to find problems and opportunities by: 1. Studying the complaint registers of all hostel buildings within campus 2. Visiting both girls’ and boys’ hostel 3. Interviewing hostel wardens 4. Interviewing students staying in the hostels

We devided the problems based on the areas that are as follows: 1. Rooms 2. Corridors 3. Bathrooms 4. Laundry Rooms 5. Music Room 6. Basketball court 7. Gymnasium After two days of observing, interviewing and experiencing carefully, we came up with around 30 ideas.

We orgainised the opportunities into several categories and presented to the class. We devided the problems in the categories of: 1. Cleanliness 2. Convenience 3. Movement 4. Storage Intergroup discussions helped us get more insights and different perspectives.

It also helped everyone filter the problems further.

Now, as a batch, the 16 of us together had a set of around 300 oppurtunities in total to choose from to go ahead with the project. All of us were to choose a few out of these and the faculty helped us shortlist from those further.

Here are the shortlisted problems that my group found.

Stacked dustbins are difficult to separate.

Styrofoam on clothes is difficult to get rid of.

Lack of ambient light in hostel rooms makes it working in rooms difficult.

Washing machine regulators loosen up and get lost.

After discussing with the guides, we filtered down the problems to the following twenty opportunities.

There is no balcony in some of the rooms to hang wet clothes.

Fan grills are difficult to clean.

There is no proper space to keep equipments in the Basket Ball Court.

Pipes slip from the washing machine container because of heavy water

Water inlet pipes fold and break later.

Birds sit on the clothes hanging in the balcony and dirty them.

Hand sprays in the washrooms get dirty.

Carrom coins are difficult to take out from pockets.

Cleaning ceiling fans is difficult.

Locking rooms when living with another roomamte is inconvenient.

Some students do not flush the toilets after they are done.

Hair accumulate on the drain.

Maintaining sanipods and keeping them clean is difficult.

Too many wires cause difficulty in the music room.

Water collected around pigeon path can cause mosquitoes.

The pigeon path becomes slippery in rains.

After group discussions and brainstorming sessions, these were the opportunities I listed down.

The next task was to shortlist hree to four promlems out of these. The prolems that I chose are as follows:

ambidextrous scissors Left handed people find it difficult to use right handed scissors as the blades of the scissors is in the opposite direction.

A left handed person using right handed scissors can’t see the line they’re trying to cut and the paper tends to bend rather than cut clearly.

Left handed scissors are available in the market both left handed and right handed can’t use the same scissors.

Scissors which claim to be ambidextrous are almost all actually manufactured right-handed and their "ambidextrousness" is limited to having finger holes that fit comfortably on the left or right thumb and fingers of the user.

However, true left-handed scissors must be engineered and manufactured with the blades reversed so the blade controlled by the left thumb is the top blade.

Opportunity: Making a pair of scissors which both left-handed and right-handed people can use.

carrom board The coins need to be arranged in a specific pattern for every game.

Rearranging the coins after each game is time consuming. There is no rack (like in Billiards) for arranging the coins in the center.

The crochet mesh/nets are still used to hold coins at the pockets. There hasn’t been any change in that. It is difficut to take out coins from the crochet-mesh under the pockets.

A lot of powder is wasted as it goes away in the pockets along with other coins and striker. The powder is difficult to spread uniformly over the board.

Opportunity:

All the coins and powder are not kept with the board. They have to be kept separately in a different box. Talcum powder bottles are used to store carrom powder/boric powder.

Designing a container for powder that spreads powder on the board uniformly.

Designing a container for carrom coins and powder while playing and otherwise.

Designing a rack to arrange the coins in the beginning of every game.

one hand hair tie Everyone has to use both the hands to tie their hair up. It is difficult for people living with affected mobility such as amputees, congenital conditions, paralysis, artheritis, broken arms, post operative recovery and others to tie their hair with only one hand.

Sometimes people with both hands may want to use just one had to tie their hair as they’re busy doing something else with the other hand.

There are hairbands available like 1-Up, but it is still difficult to gather hair the way we want and hold them till they are tied properly. You have to take help of your other hand or a wall in such cases. Products like this are time consuming and need a lot of practice.

Opportunity: Designing a hairband or a clip that holds all your hair and the way and ties them together using only one hand.

pockets for indian clothes School girls when go out to play don’t have a sleeve/ pocket to keep their handkerchiefs or pins or rubber bands.

Pockets in women’s jeans are so small that a phone or a wallet does not fit.

Apparel for women such as salwarkurta, leggings, sadi, or skirts and sometimes pants do not have pockets.

Carrying things like keys, phone, money becomes difficult in such cases.

College going girls need to carry their phones and money, pens, keys, lip balm with them all the time. Carrying a bag or a purse just for these things is not convenient.

One has to carry these things in their hands which restricts their activities.

They don’t want to keep their phones in the purse all the time. Keeping these things somewhere else when they are outside becomes a problem.

Opportunity: Designing a wearable pocket or a container to carry small things sucha as cellphones, keys, wallets for women’s Indian wear so that the hands remain free.

Out of the four shortlisted opportunities I decided to choose between either tying hair with one hand or pockets for Indian garments.

workshop and discussion

After presenting our shortlisted ideas to the class and faculty, with the help of their sugeestions I narrowed down the choice to tying hair by one hand and pockets for Indian garments.

We ideated more on how these opportunities could be solved by simple product design in groups of four.

We had a few workshops conducted after the presentation to discuss more about the chosen opportunities, for more insights on which topic should be taken forward.

Finally we presented the outcome of the discussions to our guides and decided the final brief.

I finalised designing attachable pockets for Indian garments as my topic.

about the problem Carrying phones, keys, handkerchief, etc. is inconvenient when there are no pockets to the clothes worn. Women wearing such clothes need something in which they can keep all these things and don’t have their hands busy. Purses need to be held in a hand which is inconvenient in certain cases. Bags are carried on shoulders but they need to be kept somewhere else when you have to do some activity.

Essentially a pocket that can carry small things which are usually kept in hands or in purses including keys, phones, money, safety pins, lip balm, etc.

The pocket should not dangle/ hang from the body which could make it difficult to be active with.

An accessory that can be worn with everyday clothes like leggings, pants, or salwar.

It should be easy to access.

observing + interviewing I went to public spaces like malls, markets and offices and observed the current situation.

I asked what people think about this issue.

People I asked these questions included college going girls, boys, office goers, traffic police, housewives.

These are some observations from the primary research.

It’s inconvenient to take out their phones and keeping them back everytime.

Someting they forget to take their phones because there are no pockets to the salwar.

Mostly when eating chaat, they have to manage between the phone, the purse and the plate.

Your hands are never free. Everytime putting the phone down to adjust the hair is inconvenient.

While working. People tend to forget theirphone on the table.

An online form was sent to a variety of users to fill. The following questions were asked.

1. Which clothes do you wear daily?

2. How often do you wear clothes without pockets?

3. Which essential products do you carry when you go out?

4. Which are the things you avoid carrying because there are no pockets in the clothes?

Phone, money and keys are the most essential things people carry with them all the time.

They avoid carrying pens, lip balms and handkerchiefs because of lack of pockets.

Backpack, wallets and sling bags are the most popular products used to carry these things.

Most of them find it inconvenient to keep these things in a bag while travelling, buying groceries, going out to eat.

They want to keep these things with them all the time, but they want their hands free as well.

Sling bags are good for carrying small objects. But it comes in your way when on a bike or a scooter. The bag keeps dangling aways from the body.

Attachable welcrow pockets can only be used with pants that have one part of the welcrow stitched on it. This limits the variety of clothes that can be worn.

These bag need to be kept away from body while working. It is also incovenient to carry when on a vehicle.

It is like a secret pocket. Inconvenient to use on everyday basis.

As an accessory this has limitations regarding the clothes this can be worn with. It would not go with Indian wear.

Like the backpacks, the size of this bag does not let users to use it for short travels like going to the market or a shop near home.

magnets The idea is to have two magnets at the bottom of the pocket from two sides which will clamp the salwar and the pocket would get attached completely without damaging the salwar.

Magnets do no affect mobile phones, or SD cards. It influences the gyroscope only when the magnet is kept near the phone.

The credit card/ debit card get wiped up only if the magnet is stuck on the magnetic strip of the card.

There are two sides to the pocket.

Magnets are stitched inside the pockets at the corners.

One side goes inside the salwar over the naada/ elastic.
