EDITORIAL by Phil Stevens

Good afternoon football followers , The end of July saw the closing of permits for season 1991 and this year was particularly significant because for the first time in the history of the VAFA registered Amateur players exceeded 10,000 for the first time ever. When we have been selling the virtues of the Association to sponsors and the like we have always boasted "10,00 0 players running around the amateur grounds of Melbourne each weekend" but we've always lied a little, getting close but never quite making the magical "10,000" . When you bear in mind that probably every registered player has on averagefour people interested in his football career in particular, and therefore the VAFA in general - these people being immediate family and friends - then my form-four maths tells me that at least 50,000 people each weekend have a vital interest in what happens . Therefore as administrators we have to continually keep in mind, that while we are not able to compete with the likes of the AFL in providing the ultimate standard of football, we are providing a good standard of football, where ill-disciplined actions won't be tolerated, spectators can watch games without being bothered by alcohol affected larrikins and while because of its vast appeal to people not only at games but to many others with a vested interest, Amateur football is certainly providing an excellent community service which because of its vast appeal offers a wonderful opportunity for sponsors for example, to communicate with a large audience unaided in the main by the electronic or print media. Hopefully the players whose season has just concluded will be back again next year and may even entice some friends of genuine quality playing ability to help stengthen our existing clubs even further. ROUND 18 MATCHES - REVIEW The exciting appeal of Amateur footy was never more apparent than this final round and it has been a long time since teams in 3rd AND 4th have been evicted in the last home and away round of matches . But that was the fate of Collegians and Scotch swept into the 1st Semi. No rth, at home, proved to have done their homework following their loss to Collegians in Round 15 . It was a wind affected game and No rt h was quickly into stride with the wind assistance notching 4 .6 to Collegians 2 .0 by quarter time . This was a crucial break as the Lions outscored NOBs for the remaining 3 quarters but were unable to bridge the gap by only 4 pts . It was a brave attempt by Collegians as they knew the high cost of defeat could terminate their 1991 season . Coming home with the breeze, a tight last quarter saw the Lions snatch the lead but North displayed commendable composure to win the ball from the centre square and M oloney kicked it long to Kearney to goal and restore a 4 pts lead close to siren time . Nick Garnham at CHB was excellent for big man service. The North, along with Damian Cerini (HB) and Darren Martin in the ruck gave tremendous Lions' best were James Benne tt (CHB), Brett Jefferson (R) and Rob Oliphant (C) . Commiserations to new coach Leigh Carlson in his debut in the VAFA and no doubt he will put his players under a searching microscope. as he and the club prepares for next season . Well done to North on a fine season so far butthe challenges still lie ahead A highly enthused Marcellin on a rain-savaged Bulleen ground were far too good for a lack-lustre Therry . The visitors shot to pieces any chance they had of holding on to a finals berth by failing whilst the Eagles ploughed through the mud to have 7 .5 on the board by the long interval . After half time it was more of an even contest on the scoreboard but the damage had been done and Therry will need to look closely at their fadeouts at critical from the finals. Its stages of vital games. Only 2 weeks ago they had a chance for 2nd place . Now they have .slid a cruel game at times, I know, but with so much at stake they only have themselves to blame Marcellin have come home very well over the past 3 weeks but in a review of their season they too have some tough questions to ask of themselves . With an eye to the future Marcellin would be pleased with Greg Woller's game at FF with 6 goals, well supported by Steve Boysen (RR) and Luke Getson taking on ruck duties in the absence of injured brother Matt . For Therry, Mick Bosanko (CHB), Anthony Ratcliffe (RR) and Rod Egglestone (HB) were 3 who performed creditably. Scotch continued on the excellent form of last week by disposing of Haileybury who arranged this game at Haileybury College given the poor surface of their McKinnon ground . It was a move appreciated by most and may further reinforce the College and Old Boys relationship. Scotch knew they had a chance for 4th place if other results went their way and played accordingly . They led by 4 goals at half time, increased it to 5 at the last change and won by 6 in a performance that would give their club confidence that they have improved steadily overthe year. Haileybury have been inconsistent in their 1st year in the pressure-cooker environment of A Section but this is not that unexpected . Despite what some 'experts ' think, it is a big jump from B Grade as the performances of most teams promoted have shown over the past decade and not many have been adequately equipped onand-off the field for the quantum leap. In this game, Tom Keipert ruckroved very well kicking 5 for Scotch, Gavin Eagle again played well at HF and Nick Ha rt (HB) was another to show out . For Haileybury, M att hew Armstrong gave another one of his lion-hearted performances and Anthony Phillips has played well for 2 weeks in a row ruck-roving . Ormond did what others feared they could and strode into 3rd place with a 77 pts demolition of Uni Blues. The Blues gave it everything in the opening quarter anxious to atone for their inglorious performance at their last meeting and led Ormond by 3 pts at the break. After that Ormond kicked 19.11 to 6.10 and never looked threatened . The Blues have finally succumbed after adroitly avoiding relegation in a number of previous narrow misses. It must force them to look closely at their structure as a climb back to A Section will take more than just good players given the highly competitive nature of B Grade of the last few years . More experienced help off the field is badly needed at this historic club. Ormond have fought backfrom the brink of disaster and will play off in their 8th consecutive finals series - a feat considered by many outside the club as almost impossible this year . There is no greater testimony to their fantastic organisation and commitment than this and new coach Michael McCarthy is to be commended on his debut year to this point . For Ormond, acting skipper Andrew Jobling was outstanding on a wing, Matt McConvill continues to play well at CHF and veteran Brett Burden excelled in the centre . Blues were well served by Paul Walsh (W) and Andrew Wallis (HF) . Finally, De La cemented a 2nd Semi berth by destroying OM to the tune of 142 pts . As was the case last week De La jumped the opposition and put their seal of dominance on the game by quarter time when they led by 42 pts . It was not only the ascendancy of their forward line but their defence kept OMs to a very low 2 .4 to half time . Pat M annix continues to rip defenders apart finishing up with 10 at FF and Roger Prezens also for consecutive weeks was outstanding in the centre. John Tully (BP) and Craig Wright (FP) were other great De La players . For OM, Cam Thompson (W) and Richard Webb (C) were good players. OM must, like Uni, look closely at their contingent to determine where and how they can provide more off-field support as the calibre of their players is not as poor as their results this year would suggest . It's not easy, I acknowledge, but the recruitment of more non-

playing officials must become a top priority for next season . De La go into the finals not completely satisfied with their year so far. Their inconsistency was worrying but their form over the past fortnight has been good although it may be hard to accuratelyjudge given the poor form of the opposition . Still they have a week's rest before challenging N orth so the task is there before them . They are realists and know they will need to be at their best, but isn't that true of all finalists? FIRST SEMI FINAL - PREVIEW (Sunday, September 1st ) Ormond take on Scotch in what promises to be a great game of Amateur footy . Both are playing very well at the right time and both have catapaulted into the four at the deathknock casti ng aside teams who have wavered in their commitment . That is a commodity not lacking in either of these 2 sides . It will be tough, make no mistake about that . Neither side will concede much in the physical contests but then that's what finals footy is all about . Ormond know how to play at Elsternwick Park in September ; their record over the past 7 years clearly shows that . It is frequently windy at Headquarters in Spring so teams must be able to use the wind intelligently. Running the baIl into the wind and kicking to position with the wind . Scotch showed they were no slouches here when they defeated Ormond at the Park in July by outscoring the ' Monds into the wind in the last quarter. That was one of 2 wins Scotch have over Ormond so far this season and Scotch always seems to trouble Ormond . Scotch's forward line-up is very effective with the talented M illar or Brady at FF, McCall often at CHF, and Eagle and Keiperl at HF contributing stri kepower that Ormond will have to counter . But Ormond's defence has become a very effective unit with Hille at FB playing well and supported by a tremendous competitor in David McDonald and across HB Brown, M adden and Clarke is as talented aline as you will find in A Grade . Atthe other end Scotch have very good players in state captain Fuller, Hunter, Smith and Kiel . They will need to be on their game to contain Carboon, McConvill, and McCooke who have posed problems for most defenders in the 2nd half of the season. Ormond should have an advantage in the big man area with N ankivel in top form and proven finals ruckman Paul McDonald returning from injury last week . Winning across the centre is just so essential at the Park and Petering flanked by Kingston and Jobling will be a big plus for Ormond . Reddish, Hart, and Co. take on Connell, Burden, Wood, and the work around the packs could well decide the outcome . Congratulations to both coaches in their first year to get their sides into the finals . Well done! There won't be much in this I suspect but I lean to Ormond to win.

After the most unpredictable year in B Grade the final round was a bit of an anti climax with the only surprise result in Old Brighton's win over Banyule . Old M entonians in B Grade. Parkside beat every could be well pleased to finish 5th in their first season side in the four and should be very disappointed with their season . Parade would have been hoping for more . likewise Banyule's clash with Old Brighton Brighton had other ideas . Old Brightonat Latrobe Uni should have been a warm-up for the finals, however Old with a very young side will benefit from this season and could be a power next year. Banyule's coach, John Simpson, been devastated in fact (his words) Banyule had onlytwo players ofhas note on Saturday - by the last two performances by the Bangers, best player was young state rep Nick Per ry who killed the Bangers PeterAdams and John Gilham. Old Brighton's ( 5) and Mal Shippen (3) - defenders in the air along with fellow forwards Tom Hayden Came ro n Lade and Stuart M urray were impassable. In perfect conditions (my apologies to the Doggies curator), the match of the day between Old Trinity St Bernard's and the top two sides was another "Match of the Day" fizzer boil at the moment - St Bernard's are on fire . I said it last week - Trinity are off the The final margin of 52 pts in concern to Trinity coach Alan Johnson. Best. for St Bernards' favour would be a real St Bernard's was young defender Mark Egan in sparkling form of late . Back pocket Rob who has been unpredictable M ark Fitzpatrick. Trinity's Purcell and forward Jason Gollant had good games as did the better players were hard to locate although ruckman Tony Smith and the gun centreman Andrew Allibon tried hard to lift their side - forward Rob Phillips4 goals kicked half of score. Trinity's Old RAentonians at home are awesome as Uni Blacks found out when they were defeated by 46 pts which was all to no avail as OM missed the four on percentage only to Banyule and Old Xavs Sly (ruck rover) finished off a wonderful season with a brilliant game . Defender Allister. Old M entonians John as was centreman Mark Barnett and the consistent was a real goer Craig Best . Blacks best player (no Petrov thanks to fellow scribe Andrew Donald whose education has gone amiss) was rover Hayden O'Neal, a very good ball winner. Winger Andrew Brandt and John Quiity finished the season on a good note with strong games . Parkside played host to Kew a match that Kew could have had their first win of the season . In a very good ammo game of football Parksidein led all dayto run out victors by 6 pts. Parkside Sansonetti had a big impact on the match as did the skilful Mark Page best player was the skipper Frank Winger Lou who inserra is tenacious ; Dean Goodier who had numerous possessions . made the difference between winning and losing . Kew's best player was the winger Brian Cullen who tore(4) Mark Sturgess apart . Centreman Adam Bowater and the gun utility, Paul Clayton continued their excellent form ; big Rob Schober the match for Kew. kicked 5 goals and very nearly won Old Xaverians were at home to Old Paradians in a game which Xavs had to win to make the four finished the season on a disappointing note losing by 34 pts to Old Xavs. . Parade Xavs best player. Forward David Defender Petroff was judged Landrigan 5 goals until injured was a great effort ; centreJamie took many strong marks ; Bill Mithen half forward Paul Conners to impress this scribe. Parade's ruckman David Way and Jamie Gearycontinues best two players were the two who gave Parade plenty of the ball . Defender Peter Brabender was yet again a good player as was winger Simon Vincent . FIRS The clash between Old Xaverians and Ban T yule atSEls~terPnBw ok Park wiil not be the one sided affair most B Grade supporters are predictng . This week's 1st Semi clash is cut throat . REVIE W - FIRST SEMI FIN A L Monash Blues made it 8 in a row with a 68 point win over Ivanhoe . Ivanhoe started better and were more aggressive to the ball and direct in the first quarter. They scored the first 2 goals but then Monash steadied into a slight breeze with the next 2 . But Ivanhoe kicked 3 more for the term to lead by 20 points at the first change . From there M onash dominated the game kicking 15 goals to 2 . Monash were clearly the fitter side and exploited this with creative run off the backline . At times the handball was overdone but Ivanhoe could not match the overall depth and skill of the Students . Final scores were Monash 17.16.118 to Ivanhoe 7.8.50. Monash had big games from backmen Crampton, Hay, Fielke and Quin, while rovers Alexander, Baring and Koop were busy all day. Ivanhoe were best served by Kennedy in the backline and other consistent contributors were Tucker, Armst ro ng and Rawley. PREVIEW - SECOND SEMI FINA L Along with Monash, Whitefriars are the form side with 8 wins from the last 9 matches . They start favourites in my book against Bulleen-Temp . after beating the Stowers in the last match of the season . Both sides have a number of class players which will make for a top clash of Amateur football . For the Friars watch full-forward Pratt , ruckman Houston and rover Strike . Other regular performers have been Carbone and McNeil . Bulleen have some dangerous forwards in Pace, Agrotis and Mayne. Other key players will be the "Tony McGuiness of Ammo Footy" Farley, centreman George and the elusive Parris . It should be a top game and I favour the Friars by 16 points.

Old Ivanhoe pushed Melbourne High every inch of the way last Saturday, with the difference between the teams perhaps the last quarter of Adam Green who kicked 4. In a battle of the back line, neither side kicked well, but Old Ivanhoe's 6 .18 deprived them of a game which they could well have won . Pitodo kicked 4, but they had few other effective forwards, despite some good marking from Triandos. There was little in it all day, with the Hoes going inta the last quarter a couple of points up and then missing a couple of vital shots early . The Hoes' runners Dyson, lfyeston, Alexander, matched Meibourne High, and Bamert was kept quiet, whilst I was impressed by the effort of the iioes' stand in ruckman Paul Ritchie who never stopped trying. Clinton Young was High's best, and, after "Jocka" Rielson failed to make his rumou red comeback, and Dawson went off early with a stilltroublesome hamstring, it was left to Chief "issac" Ne~rton to carry out the ruck in good style . In the second semi AJAX scored a sizeable victory to gain promotion to C Section in 1992 and with it of course a birth in the Grand Final . The crowd was the largest at Elsternwick Park since last year's A Section Grand Final, and the game was not without incident, including a player count, (but there is definiately no truth in the rumour that A . B . had to call for a calculator when he got into dou b!e figures!) . For Old Geelong it was a day when absolutely nothing went right, to the extent that I finished the day putting "Nightmare on Elm Street" on the video that evening for some light relief! The match started with 2 send-offs early, and although AJAX also had a player off later, the Blue and White never seemed to recover their poise . AJAX's kicking for goal -!ed by Gordon and Klooger (whose disposal is outstanding) was in considerable contrast to Geelong's, but the difference was more than that . Charlie Ross played an outstanding game, mainly in defence, for the OGs, and was ably supported by John Roysmith, but few of their other players managed to get into the game which saw the Jackers go further and further ahead as the afternoon progressed . T H IS W EE K It is hard to see Old Geelong coming back from last week's sizeable loss, although there have been a number of cases in recent seasons of teams throughout the grades losing 2nd Semi Finals only to come back and win Preliminary Finals, and, indeed Grand Finals . (E .g . in A Section : 1988 Ormond lose 2nd Semi to Old Xavs by 10 goals but win Grand Final ; Old Xavs win 1981 Grand Final after losing Second Semi to No rth Old Boys by over 100 points.) High's ruckstrength, with or without Comer will worrythe OGs, and OG's injury list is not getting any smaller. As Old Ivanhoe lifted against High last week when the work of a season was on the line, so will OG, but I can't see it being enough . Reserves - Old Geelong performed a bit better than last week's scores suggested, and SKOBs could be decimated (and demoralised) by the loss of their playing coach through injury . However, SKOBs performed well when these teams met a fortnight ago, and on paper they look good enough to push through to the grand final . Two very good games of football to open the final series saw Williamsto wn win the 2nd Semi and earn rightfull promotion to D Grade. Well done to all associated with the club, while at the Ross Gregory, the Bloods stayed alive by the barest of margins against a very game N orth Brunswick . From F-Troop we welcome AN Z Bank to E-Street, I know how hard they have worked to get here and they richly deserve all the accolades bestowed upon them . RE V IEW iST SEMI FINA L This was a very good pressure game of football as all elimination finals are. The 1st half was controlled by the strong wind with North using it to advantage to set up an early lead by 1/4 time, the Bloods used it very well during the 2nd term to have the match almost squared at the long break . The 3rd quarter was to be the decider, North had the wind but to their dismay could not capitalise and kicked many points, some from very easy set shots . The pressure was starting to tell on both sides as crucial mistakes were made as the ball turned over from one side to the other, and the orange break saw A quinas 1 point in front coming home with the wind, North looked gone . Inexplicably the wind decided to drop completely and this really opened up the game, North got a sniff and at the 17 minute mark led by 17 points, and looked home, but no, the Bloods refused to give in, dug deeply into their mental and physical reserves, kicked 4 goals in the next 10 minutes to take a 7 point lead, with North kicking a f u rther goal to reduce the margin to 1 point when thesiren finally sounded toend@Vorthies'season, and give Aqlnas another chance. The North Brunswick club was very proud of all its players for fighting to the end after being out for the count at the orange break . Keith @dehir,in the centre, played a fantastic game all day, he really was an inspiration to his teammates . y Tirchett never stopped at CHF and Craig Burrows on the wing played his season's best game. The Bloods kept things close to their chest and did not think it fair to name 3-4 individuals in a top team effort . In the Reserves, W illiamstow n proved too strong for Aquinas . 2ND SEMI FI N A L The N odders opened up very well with Timmy Chilcott leading the way in defence and Conroy gathering many useful possessions out of the middle . At the mid-way point of the 2nd quarter Willy had their backs to the wall against what appeared to be the faster and more skilful Mazenod and found themselves 4 goals in arrears, but they lifted to a man, they picked up their men, played good close checking football to take control of the ball, overtake the Nods and lead by 9 points at 1/2 time. The 3rd quarter saw Willy open with a quick confidence boosting goal that really lifted them and disheartened Mazenod, with Dean McLeod dominating his wing he optioned the CY's game and at 3/4 time they had a matchwinning lead against the Nodders who just could not put together any semblance of passages of good football . Mazenod gave their all in the last quarter and really tried to fight back, in a goal for goal battle, Blackley was spectacular in the air and Stu M cMullin put in a gallant effort to keep Pete Graham goalless, but all this was to no avail and the Us kept going to record a big victory and the much deserved promotion that goes with it . Anthony Cook, in the centre, continued his great season, the CY's B&F could be his, Tom Cannon kicked 7 goals and Larry Turnley made an excellent return to form, as the Big Bird controlled the ruck . The Reserves saw the taller, hard running Mazenod score a big victory over a N orth Brunswick side that never stopped trying . Best : Paul Smith, Grimmo and Paul Deegan for M azenod and Jim Kibizis, Paul Randello and John Androutsos for North . PREVIEW PRELIMINARY F I NAL The Nodders now find themselves in the same position as they were this time last year . I still don't think they have found their correctteam balance and certainly miss Sam Rekic up at full forward . They have beaten Aquinas twice during the year, but this doesn't count for anything today, the Bloods' form is better at the moment and they will (Bloods) welcome the return of their captain . If the Bloods can match the Nodders in the 1st quarter and then maintain the momentum and pressure all day they will win and advance to D Grade and end another disappointing year for the Nods . I fancy W illiamstown Reserves to join their senior counterparts in next week's grand final . PRESS CORRESPONDE N TS : We scored 4/4 last week, a good effort considering the disappointments etc. Keep up the good work this week and don't forget Ph : 571 4808 or Fax: 569 8766 by 6pm M ondays . Well Communists and Socialists really took a beating this week with Gorby and the hardliners outpointed by Boris and Bustling Billy and the Backyard Boys having the answers for each Redz challenge which came thick and fast in an entertaining clash at Lakeside 2 . The Boys started well and held their 3 twin break till half time . A remarkable third stanza saw a spirited fight back by the Socialists inspired by spearhead Alex McNutt . This was eclipsed by a 7 goals in 12 minute burst by the Boys who were superbly led by Spider Christie. The Redz came good in the end of the third and the start of the last but the Boys steadied to win by 25 points . It was a great final and a credit to both clubs . Across at Lakeside 2, the Van Winkles set up their long-awaited promotion to E-Grade (congratulations Tommy, Harry, Kanga, Foot, Mrs. Getta etc.) with a 10 goal opening stanza . The Brewers gave their all for the rest of the match but must have wondered which team they had thrashed the week before . With F-Troop Medal winner, Jack McDonald still to return, the Winkles have a fortnight to plan their assault on the flag . In the Ressies, the Sham rocks did it comfortably in a lack lustre game against the Boys to win a spot against the Winkles in the prelim . Last year's premiers, the Elitists, earned the rightto defend their title by easily accounting for the Winkles. MILESTONES: • F-Troop Medal Results - Congratulations to the following : J. REVIEW OF LAST WEEK'S GAMES DIVISION 1 As expected, De La finished the year as undefeated champions for the second year in a row but this year didn't have a game taken away for administrative errors! Well done Dennis & Co .!! Bernies lifted their game in the 2nd half after booting only 2 goals to l/2 time and that should give them encouragement for their repeat engagement of their 1990 semi final against Marcellin . De La were best served by Dom Sculling at CHF who netted 20 marks and booted 4 goals and by David Dean who kicked his first goal in 2 years in his new role as a ruck rover. 2 undermanned teams in Tonners and Collegians had a good 3 quarter contest but Tonners got 8 in the 2nd quarter which was the sea!er. John Howell got 5 of them and finished with 8 for the day. Andrew Skelton and David Morton also did well for Tonners while the Lions were best served by Tony Symons and Fergus Donaldson . Haileybury got a walkover from Parade but compliments to the 14 guys from Bundoora who turned up and did the right thing and "played the game" . The Eagles prepared for the finals with a comfortable win over Scotch . "Secko", A .T. and "Darbs" all back from the "ones" starred and Nick Daicos booted 6 (with a name like that, what else would you expect!) . Xavs won easily against Nodders who started with only 16 and had only 14 for the 2nd half. Paul Salter booted 12 and got a mention in the best 6 this time, whilst Portelli and Purcell also did well for Xavvers . As usual, Howie was one of Nodders' best who no doubt rue their visit to Bundoora - the only game they lost to a team out of the fou r. The M onds, again, couldn't make the effortto advise me afew details of their "spoon saving" effort against the Students. DIVISION 2 NORT H Therry became yet another team to respond to the "Slab Challenge" by rolling OT and thus ensuring their finals spot . It's been a costly year for me with the slabs but this is the one I was probably happiest to lose - well done Roys. Therry's best were Adrian Baker and Ricky Bannister. Albanvale had the unusual experience of coming from behind at 1/2 time to get up and beat the Towners . Anthony Padden (can he make it a hat trick of B&Fs?) and Alex Cilmi were Cobras' best with Phil Phillips booting 5 and 16 y.o. Troy Gillard getting 3 in his debut . Once again, Aquinas provided no details whilst Chirnside got a forfeit from Old Hoes whose nonperformance and non-communication over the last 3 weeks could only be politely described as deplorable and disgraceful . DIVISION 2 SOUT H Bedas had a disappointing warm-up for the finals against the 16 man Jackers. The bonuses for Bedas were the good form of Simon Zahra and the goalkicking efforts of Simon Farmer with 7 from the flank and David Goodchild with 5 . St Peter's made it 2 in a row by just getting home from Ashers who once again staked a claim forthe "most consistent losers of the close ones" . Ruckman Ga ry Hall and Emi Lema were St Peter's best . Caulfield finished a poor year on a good note by beating Nodders - a fitting "reward" for Graeme, "Chippy" and Tony and all who stuck at itthrough the year. M att hew Johnston's plea to play on the forward line was finally rewarded and he snagged 5 whilst Anthony Ellis and James Terry also did well . As usual, De La's goalkickers in their win over Old C'well were Ash Trusco tt and Joe Losinno, with 3 each, with Eric Maillard and Adam Sheedy being 2 of their main contributors. O M spoilt Tones unblemished record with a good win on the Keysborough bog . Conditions were dreadful but OM proved that the team that really wants the ball in such conditions will win the game . I only saw the last half but Tones would have to lift their endeavour to turn the tables in the finals . The 2 Stuarts - Cox and Will - were only 2 of the gutsy performers for OM whilst Tones were best served by Chris Radin and "Beau" May. PREVIEW OF TODAY'S GAMES DIVISION 1 - 1ST SEMI FINAL We see a repeat today of last year's semi in which Eagles were too good for Bernies and went on to win the flag. Can history repeat itself? Eagles form in recent weeks - prior to last week - has been only marginally above average whilst Bernies' form against other finalists was also average . Eagles should be able to field their best possible team with "Secko", "Darbs", Denne tt and A .T. backfrom the 1 sts, whilst Bernies probably won't have their seniors' "form horse" M ark Egan available. One of today's key issues will be who can kick the straightest particularly on a ground like Oval 4 where across wind usually features . Eagles' accuracy has left a!otto be desired whilst i3emies have good goalkickers in Paul Gilmour and Steve Parrett . I think Eagles will overcometheir accuracy problems to beat Bernies by a much smaller margin than they enjoyed last year . SELECTION : Marcellin DIVISION 2 NORTH Ther rytake on Chirnside at Parkside - a ground similar to size to the Roys' home at Oak Park. Disappointingly, Chirnside didn't get a hit-out last week whilst the Roys have beaten them and OT in the last 2 weeks to stay in the four - good examples of ability to play under pressure . I must qo for Therry. Albanbale were brought bac k TIHF

to earth last week in the 1st half against Towners and this will be costly for OT, who must be disappointed with last week's effort . Can't see any chance of OT stopping the Cobras' second successive grand final appearance . SELECTIONS : Therry Albanval e DIVISION 2 SOUT H I haven't seen De La at all this year whilst I have seen Bedas put in a couple of good losing efforts to the top 2 . D's recent form is faultless but I expect Bedas' experience against the 2"OlYls" to stand them in good stead today. If they can curb the Truscottll Losinno goalkicking machine, I'm sure they'll win . On last week's showing, I'd be sillyto do other than go for O M s against Tones particularly with Sinn, N elson and Cornell back with them . However, Tones have Mu rphy and Campbell back from the seniors which will help cover the loss of Appel stretchered off last week. If Stainfor@it is available, I'm sure the Tones will get better drive from the pivot than last week where Smith featured for O M . I've been wrong in my 2 previous picks with these 2 and, with no home ground advantage, I can't resort to my usual "logic". I guess current form is good form, so I must pick OM . SELECTIONS : St Bedes Old Melb .

FORESTERS FRIENDLY SOCIETY Foresters Friendly Society is pleased to enter a second year of V A F A sponsorship in 1992 . In afinancial market characterised by consumer nervousness I feel it is atimely opportunity to favourably distinguish Friendly Societies from other Financial institutions. Firstly, Friendly Societies are non-profit organisations with the declared aim of providing maximum member services for the minimum possible cost. Very importantly, Friendly Societies are mutual organisations with ownership and control vested in the members . All surpluses are returned to or held as reserves on behalf of members, there are no shareholders nor external control of member funds . The rise in popularity of Friendly Societies in recent years can be attributed to the almost unique combination of tax effectiveness and security . The types of investment permitted are highly regulated and funds are subject to regular rigorous actuarial valuation and audit certification and appropriate reserve levels must be maintained . All in all, the structure of Friendlies make them intrinsically solid and secure and well placed to provide a broad range of community and financial services. Foresters is a traditional high performing friendly society that has operated in Australia for over 135 years . The traditional functions of health insurance, life cover, sickness benefits are still an important element of our Society and are now being augmented by a new generation of well researched investment products . Those people who value their ABC Sports coverage are dismayed at the news that the sports coverage will suffer from savage budget cuts . Why ABC Management, who are based in Sydney, has singled out sport as a target for major cuts when it is held in such a high regard by the community, is puzzling . We understand that sport obviously does not have many friends in the ABC's hierarchy, who think sport is covered by the commercial radio and television networks, so, why bother? What they forget is that the ABC is supposed to be the "people's network", and if the thinking is from anti-sport sentiment then it's an outrageous attack on our Australian culture.

Astonishingly, Melbourne has always been a high rater for sport and is well supported by the local and country people, and yet it appears it will be savaged whilst Sydney will have minimal staff cuts . The bottom line is that Sydney will just take control of all sports coverage in the long run, and whilst it is claimed that AFL and international cricket won't be affected, it's hard to see how 3LO's high standard of professionalism in its footy coverage can be maintained WITHOUT 60 PER CENT OF ITS STAFF!!! This has serious implications for other aspects such as Amateur football . Over the past twelve months we have seen time for local sport eroded to just FIVE MINUTES and coverage of the popular amateur competition - grass roots footy - trimmed drastically. We are deeply concerned that with the entire output of ABC Sport under the control of Sydney, little regard will be given for local sports coverage if any . The people of Melbourne and Victoria regard the ABC and sport as part of our national heritage . If you feel strongly about the proposed cuts to sport we urge you to write to the man who can change that ! COACHES CLIPBOA edited by Mike McArthur-Alle n With most teams now putting their guernseys away for next season, 1 thought it would be a good idea to start getting some basic ideas on next season's pre-season . I was reading an article by Mark McKeon, Collingwood Fitness Adviser and Runner that really appealed to me as being simple, basic and reliable fitness tests. The great problem with fitness tests is that they are all done differently by different types of people. For example, the basic 60 sec . push up test, there are too many variations of a correct push up to make any comparisons of strength between individuals . Three fitness tests which are easily administered, objective and reliable tests :

1 . Aerobic Enduranc e The 12 minute run is hated by players, many don't have the condition to complete it safely when they start their pre-season campaign and there is an unacceptable injury risk in having 90 kilograms plus athletes pounding on hard surfaces, especially when they tire and their running technique deteriorates . A stress fracture or shin splints could be just around the corner. Try a 1500m run, mark out a track on your own oval . Even the slowest runner should ~ be ableto cover the distance in six minutes . You'll be able to see all groups at all times ~ and they will be training at a pace that is closer to that which they have to sustain i n a game. Anything underfive minutes is a good time. Four minutes 30 seconds is very good and when retesting ensure to use the same track at all times . 2 . Stengt h I have already mentioned the problem with push ups because of the difference in techniques. A more simple strength test is the flexed arm hang . The only equipment needed is a horizontal bar (chin up bar or monkey bar) and a watch . Players take an undergrip (fingers wrap under the bar, thumbs wrap over) and pull himself upward in a chin up type action . Hold the position where the eyes are exactly at bar level . Hang on, as soon as the eyes are lifted above or below bar level, the test is over. Players who hold for a minute, very good, the majority will be 30 to 45 seconds . Retest after 12 sessions to see how effective your strength training has been . 3. Body Fat The easiest test is body mass which is measured by scales . Players performance at training can be measured by loss or gain of weight. A far better test is skinfold test. Most clubs would have a PE teacher or know of one who could help in this area . This test measures fat deposits in millimetres of thickness in a number of body areas or sites . Measure the skinfold on the tricep, behind the shoulder blade, above the point of the hip, next to the belly button and on the mid point of the thigh . Add up the figures and you'll have a skinfold score. In excess of 60 is too high, players needs to lose weight . Make allowances for different body types of players than issuing the same goal to everyone but make sure they have achievable goals . Muscle is denser and therefore heavier than fat and so it is possible and common to lose fat but not lose weight . Ensure the same person tests the players at each testing session to maintain consistency with all tests . As a guide, 8mm per site is OK with a total of 40mm for five sites . A total of 50mm is marginal and any site in excess of 12mm is too high . I hope this helps coaches with some easy tests for pre-season '92 . They do not take a long time and are easily organised . Garry Connolly Senior Coach, St Mary's Football Clu b

5 YEARS AGO - 198 6 In "A" Section first semi De La Salle reversed last year's grand final result with a 51 point win over Ormond . De La lost Mick Deveson and Chris Campbell through injury on the morning of the match and Ormond recalled strong forward Andrew Hill who had been out with a broken collarbone . A point the difference at half time then De La powered away to kick 11 goals to the Monds' 3 in the second half to win 14 .18 to 6.13. Best were Maher, Greene, Lowe, Harrington, Hanrahan, Rennie (5 goals) (De La) and P. M ehrten, Clark, Crampton, R . Tonkin, N aylor, Boyanton (Orm .) . Parkside and Fawkner threw the executive into frenzy and delighted the treasurer when they played a draw, Parkside 15 .18 to Fawkner 17.6 i n"B" Section first semi . It was an absolute thriller, the play of a high standard and with both teams having real control of the match at different stages . At half time Parkers led by 31 points. Then halfway through the third quarter Fawkner unleashed an incredible burst to kick 6 goals in 8 minutes to be 10 points down at the last change . With 2 quick goals Fawkner hitthe front atthe 5 minute mark. Then it was goal for goal . Parkside hit back every time Fawkner drew ahead and levelled atthe 25 minute mark . Ter ry Young put Fawkner ahead at the 27 minute mark but Ollie Filipovic replied for Parkside to level the scores at the 29 minute mark - the siren sounded 2 minutes later with the scores level . Best were A . Shaw, Sturgess, Williams, Sansonetti, Griffiths, Marsh (P'side) and P. M azerczak, G . Busst, Weir, Buckley, Cropley, Kavanagh (F'kner) . 10 YEARS AGO - 198 1 Nort h Old Boys "A" justified their top position when they destroyed Old Xaverians, 30.16 to 14 .14, in the second semi . Best were Butera, Horan, veteran Shane Maguire (7 goals), Dillon (7 goals), S. Weir and Considine (NOB) and for Old Xaverians, Vale, Sullivan, Callil, Pirrie, Noonanan, Stanley (Old Xavs) . The question on everyone s lips after the game were whether Old Xaverians could recover and whether veteran Shane Maguire would be able to repeat his magnificent performance in the grand final . 15 YEARS AGO - 1876 It was another North Old Boys-St Bernards grand final when St Bernards held on long enough to stop De La Salle's bid and get home by 2 points. St Bernard's inaccuracy, 11 .24 to De La's 13 .10 almost cost them the game. Best were K. Phelan, Nadzielski, Angel (St B.) and Lyons, G roves, Donegan (De La Salle) . Marcellin won their way into "A" Section in 1977 and the "B" Section grand final when they beat Old Scotch by 34 points. Old Melburnians, Old

Xaverians, La Tro be Blacks and West Brunswick won "C", "D", "E" and "F" premierships . Umpires in charge of grand finals were "A" : Rowell ; "B" : Wills ; "A" Reserves : Simpson ; "B" Reserves : Grubb. 20 YEARS AGO - 1971 Ormond earned the rightto meet Uni Blues when they inflicted a crushing 43 point defeat on St Bernards . Wood, Ladd (7 goals) and Murphy were best for Ormond, who were in control all day. North snatched a6 point win over Ivanhoe aftertrailing by 19 points in the third quarter. Ivanhoe's inaccuracy, 3.12 in the second half, led to their defeat . Premiers in other sections were " C" : ToorongaMalvern (who beat Old Trinity by 5 points) ; "D" : Power House (beating Reservoir OB by 15) ; "E" : St Pat's (who beat La Trobe Blacks by 1 point) and "F" : M arcellin (beating Old Ivanhoe by 29 points) . 25 YEARS AGO - 196 6 Coburg trailed Old Paradians by 15 points atthreequartertime in the Final and fought backto lead in the last term only to see Parade come back to score a goal and win their waytothe "A" Section Grand Final against Melbourne High . The Parade winning margin was 5 points. Ormond were overwhelmed in the second half by Ivanhoe who kicked 7 .4 to 1 .2 for a 31 point win and chance to play Kew in the "B" Section Grand Final . Premiers in other sections were Geelong (C) ; Old Geelong (D) and AJAX (E) . It was a double to Old Geelong as their Seniors and Reserves defeated Old Carey in both Grand Finals . Umpire Kevin McKay was the man in charge of the "A" Section Grand Final at South Melbourne CG when Old Paradians defeated MHSOB to make it 4 premierships in 5 years . I n"B" Section Kew repeated their semi final victory over Ivanhoe to take the premiership. 40 YEARS AGO - 195 1 Old Paradians repeated their Final win over Alphington in the Grand Final to takethe "B" Section premiership (decided under the "pre-Page system" when the minor premiers had the right of challenge if beaten in the semi-final or final) .

STAN KENN Y Old Paradians stalwart Stan Kenny died recently . Stan joined the club as a supporter in 1962, and the following year became an official of the club and carried out duties as goal umpire and timekeeper for many years, up until 1990. Stan also became the official VAFA timekeeper at interstate matches and carnivals . If timekeepers do have a role in desperate finishes, then team management alwaysfeltthat Stan's hugeframe and farily gruff demeanou r served the VAFA well . Beneath that gruff exterior Stan was a man of great passion with a love for his church, Collingwood, his dog, the Old Paradians and the VAFA but who could nominate the order, and above all, a kind man . Stan was elected to life membership of Old Paradians in 1978 . He served as VAFA Delegate from 1976 to 1990, and was awarded a VAFA Certificate of Merit in 1982 . Farewell, Stan, from all your mates in VAFA football .

Personali ST PATRICK'S MENTONE 200 GAM ES TO BER N IE SYMON S Congratulations from all at St Pat's Mentoneto Bernie Symons who plays his 200th game against ANZ in the Preliminary Final today (31/8) . Club records show that he was B&F in 1980 and a member of the Senior Premierships in 1976 and 1982 . Bernie has been an elusive wingman in the seniors and this year is lending his experience to the Reserves in their questfor a flag . Well done from all at the "Vultures" .

Pars is his lovely wife Libby who never misses a game and who can be heard cheering loudly from the sidelines . Well done Al, we hope that you can crown the year with a premiership.

ST PAT'S MENTONE - MILESTO N ES Congratulations go to the following players who have achieved milestones throughout thisi year: 150 games - Peter Emmerson ; 100 games - Paul Kingsbury, Marty Mulcahy, Steve Scanlan ; 50 games- Tony David, Mark Dipiila, M ark Henson, John Mackay, Neil Sanderson, Danny Seedsman . WELL DONE from all at the "Vultures".

100 GAMES TO ZEDDERS YOUNG VETERAN All atANZ Bank today congratulate Paul Shoppee on playing his 100th game for the club this week (31/8) in the Preliminary Final . Paul, a relatively young veteran at 24 years old, has reached this milestone in 6 straight years by rarely missing a game. Through his early years 'Shops' was a regular Senior player but in the past couple has played good consistent footy across half back for the Ressies, and in no small way has contributed to the success of this season . Well done Paul from all at ANZ . Have a big game today, we hope our form will improve so that game no . 101 is in the GF next week, and we Iookforward to you and Jo being around the club for many years to come .

A L GAILEY REACHES THE CENTURY Al Galley reaches the 100 game milestone in the Reserves 2nd semi final against Bulleen-Temp today (31/8) . Al is one of the fittest players at the club and is always one of the hardest workers on the track . His dedication and commitment to the club have paid handsome dividendsthis year having played a number of fine games in the seniors in a new "taging role' and on the wing . Al is a popular player amongst his peers and is a hardworkinq clubman . His number one fan

50 AT SKOBLAN D Rob Marks last week (24/8) played his 50th game in the Ressies' big win over Old Camberwell . A player of undoubted ability, "Skiddy' in his younger days may of not given his footballing the desired commitment it needed (one must get up early on Sat mornings when you're playing ressies) . However with a more mature outlook this year, Rob is looked upon by many at the club to be a future senior player in a number of positions. WELL DONE 'Skiddy' .

7C=ME CLACK LIST

350 GAMES FOR BRIAN KELLY Bulleen Templestowe AFC congratulate stalwart Brian Kelly on achieving this amazing feat of 350 games. Brian has been around BulleenTemp for many, many years and played a big part in the Bullants dramatic climb up through the grades in the late 70s, early 80s . He has played most positions during this time, and is currently attempting to captain our Reserves side to "backto back" premierships . Brian is also the club's Treasurer, and as a Life Member has made an outstanding contribution to Bulleen-Temp. A huge congratulations from all at the club. 350 REACHED AT ST KEVINS OB Today's Preliminary Final (31/8) against Old Geelong sees SKOB's oldest (and still one of the fittest) players, Robe rt Henry Hawkins, notch up yet another milestone in a remarkable career that commenced before many of his team mates were even born . Today Bob becomes the first player to reach that lofty milestone of 350 games, a magnificent achievement in consistency and dedication that has seen him, at 38, miss only 4 games in his entire career (he played the first 197 consecutviely), and if that isn't enough, for the past seven years after playing, he fronts up as runner for the Senior coach . Bob's records over the years are many and varied : Captain/Coach Resies 1975, 80, 81, 82, 83, 84 ; Reserves B&F 1981, 82, 84 ; Best Clubman 1976 ; Committee 1975-81 ; and a member of St Kevin's successful Reserves GF team of 1976, still the only highlight the club has had since 1953. Although pushed for the Club record in recent seasons past, by the like of 'Curly' and 'Mouthwash', their subsequent retirements (forced or otherwise) has seen Boz out their on his own, pushing on to that ultimate goal of 400 amateur games, or his 40th birthday, whichever comes first. Congratulations Bob, from your teammates past and present, from all supporters and opposition players . You are what Amateur football is all about, and a tremendous example to all at St Kevin's OBFC . DOUBLE CENTURY TO IAN "HAPPY" HAMMAM Committee, players and supporters of St Kilda CBCOB belatedly congratulate Ian Hammam on recently joining the elite "200 club" (apologies from the correspondent) . Ian joined the club from De La Sa!le and quickly established a reputation for himself as a solid and dependable backman. He is renowned for his strong overhead marking and is a master atthe art of "punching". Ian is not frightened to show his aggression on the field (and also on the training track as his team mates will testify) yet over the years has deve!oped an excellent rapport with the umpiring fraternity. This year Ian will be the "General" of the backline in the Reserves quest for a flag . Over the years he has been a generous sponsor of the club and a willing worker. Congratulations on your fine achievement ! LOU ZACHAIUAH B.E .M . PATRO N At North Melbourne Football Club Social Club on the evening of Monday 19 August, Lou Zachariah attended the VAFA Umpires' Annual Dinner . Lou enjoyed the dinner immensely. He sat with a group of veteran umpires including Kevin McKay, Colin Wills, Don Dodds, Harry Marks, Daryl Hill and David Dressing . It was to be the last VAFA function Lou attended as he died early next morning . Perhaps it was fitting that it was an Umpires function as Lou in his club capacity for Old Xaverians was boundary umpire for the clu b from 1951 to 1956 and timekeeper from 1957 to 1964 . Lou joined the club in 1947 and had the occasional game from 1948 to 1950 before taking on official duties . Lou had grown up in a football environment as his family were in the boot business, manufacturing the famous Arena football boot and sporting footwear. Club president from 1959 to 1962, Lou became a member of the VAFA Executive 1959, and President from 1971 to 1977. Lou managed a number of representative teams and was immensely popular in interstate circles . He was also a skilful and crafty medium pace bowler with Old Xaverians in the MCC Club competition . A man of strongly held beliefs, Lou was very proud of his association and his contribution to amateur football . It was a pleasureto know Lou . H is quiet smile and sense of fair play won him friends wherever he went . Those who shared a beer with him will be surprised to know that Lou did not have his first beer until he was 23. Our sympathyto Billie who gave Lou total support and to his family. N .R.
