- nd so the first round of the 97th season of Amateur Football is behind us. Who would have believed back n April that De La would be relegated or that Marcellin would feature in the finals? r ahs been a very interesting season . Ormond, Old Paradians and Old Xaverians stamped their claim as inals contenders pretty early in the season and despite a slip from time to time by Old Xaverians the leading ancee teams of 1987 will fight it out again in 1988, although the order might change slightly ! ; pleasing feature of the year is that Marcellin was able to handle its return to 'A' Section to such an extent that it successfully made the jump from the B Section final series last season to 'A' this season . As Old Paradians and Old Xaverians managed the same jump in 1987 perhaps Andrew Langford-Jones and others are right n saying that there's not much difference between the two sections? Perhaps we should wait and see how Parkside and Kew, if they're the two who win promotion this season, which I believe they will be, fare next year .

North, Collegians, Old Scotch and Blues, finished equal fifth and all would realize they were capable of making a finals appearance as all at time played well enough or better than the top four . At least they're all in there again next year.

(Old Paradians and Ormond judging from comments passed at the Carnival Reunion last Monday, are both grateful for the fortnight's rest . Perhaps Paul Schuhkra ft will spend Saturday practising kicking for goal . Eleven behinds in two weeks is quite a contrast to his Carnival effort of 19 .2 . He may therefore be better off studying the video tapes of Victoria's success in Launceston .

O.Rs will be rightfully proud of their "minor premiers" title but level headed enough to realize that Ormond played well enough to have an incredible 12 more scoring shots and still lose! Old Paradians defenders Matt and B rendan Considine, Tony Canavan and Lloyd Mansfield were again on top with McClements and Fahey also showing out . Gleeson is almost back to his best and with Spillane set to return Old Paradians can be pleased enough . The Ormond selectors will be working hard to figure out why they're not winning and you can bet Tobin, Carboon, McMahon and possibly Roe will come into contention next week .

On the bright side, the form of Jobling, Kingston, McCooke and Gilmore is no doubt pleasing .

Collegians go into mothballs with the knowledge that they let themselves down badly last week, whereas Old Scotch who go with them, salvaged something with an impressive win in front of a very good home crowd made up of those "stars" of the sixties. The Cardinals best and fairest award could be a history making four, ,.,ay tie this season - Fuller, More, Smith and Reddish being so prominent and Hodge may not have played enough games to have made it 5 !

North Old Boys exposed Marcellin as a finals "pretender" with a lively display which will give them heart for a big year in 1989 . Certainly the return of Conti lifted the mobility whilst Booth, Atkinson and Boyd all had fine seasons .

De La departs from 'B' and "what can one say" no more than thanks for the memories and good luck next year. A thirteen year stretch at the top is an enviable record as are five A Section flags and De La of all Clubs know exactly what is required for a return to the big time . With a great crop of Under 19s in the fold the future looks rosy enough for the Blue and Golds.

THE FIRST SEMI FINA L Old Xaverians will approach the game confidently yet cautiously . They are all well aware that they've had the Eagles measure twice this season and that Marcellin will miss Slattery who single handedly almost pinched the game from them last month .

Down the spine John McKay has twice had Petroff 's measure. He has the strength and bulk to bustle the Marcellin spearhead, is a strong mark and punches away when in doubt .

Presuming G reetham is centre half back he will have little trouble with either Psoras or Paatsch . In the centre the Atkins and Amad duel will be a beauty with both players making valuable contributions . B rendan Murray thankfully for Marcellin is in good form . He will need to be, as Mac Grummet has successfully filled quite a hole for Xavs at centre half forward . He has much to prove to the football world and has really hit his straps of late and he won't mind if either Hawthorn or Richmond have their recruiting agents in attendance . At full forward Steve Cu rtain is another big plus for the Xavs . He will be far too strong for Mick Day his likely Marcellin Opponent is an acknowledge finals player and with Grummet provides Xavs with two focal points up forward .

The on ball players for both sides provide a good contrast . Meehan has had the call over Matt Getson who is regarded as a "soft" ruckman whilst Ebe rt who is a great leader will be under constant pressure from Beattie and Dann . Xavs rovers Tierney and Meagher are better on bailers than Sheehan and Carafa and Callan and Paul Cu rtain should have the call on the wings to give the Xavs the edge across the centre . Marcellin's defence is reliable and will look to the experience of Callinan dash of Luke Getson and strength of Cooper to restrict the Xavs scoring opportunities.

At the other end B rennan who is in great touch, Peter Cu rtain and either brother John or Gooding and Marks will defend and atack as required and Marcellin will need Lennox and its resting rovers to aid Pet roff and Psoras in converting the efforts of their defenders and ruck rovers .

The Sist Report on B Section

VVell this is one I thought wouldn't happen - Caulfield being relegated . They should definitely be swabbed, and as for Trinity & Kew, all I can say is that last Saturday's game provided a few upsets. I had to check the scores on a number of occasions just to make sure that I wasn't being had !

I reckon I could hear the cheers in Carlton from 'Shirl' when the Trinity boys capped off the best win in 2 years of B Grade. It was a great game in which Trinity combined well and worked non-stop to overcome the Therry side. In a game which the lead see-sawed for three quarters Therry were up 3 goals at the end of the first quarter with the aid of a stiff breeze. Trinity applied the pressure with some great tackling and Therry found t difficult to get their play on game going on the small ground . Trinity regained the lead by 2 points at 1/2 time .

In the 3rd quarter Trinity got their short game going against the breeze and Therry wasted a lot of opportunities up forward, however they enjoyed a 14 point lead at 3/4 time, but not for long ., With Turner dominating in the ruck Trinity turned on a great exhibition of football kicking 9 .2 in the last . Norman & Black helped Turner get the ball out of the centre down to O'Shaughnessy who did well up forward . For Therry, Nyman & McCann continued their good form .

In the other big game Parkside grabbed the title of 'Giantkillers' when they overcame Kew by 7 points in front of a crowd of about 3000. It was a great game of high standard particularly as the competition in B grade has not been that high this year. In a game which came right down to the wire it was a matter of the side who had the wind advantage and had the lead at the break . There were some great duels on the day - and both backlines pressured the forwards into missing easy opportunities . Parkside's defensive players Sturgess, Sherlock & Sansonetti all played well with O'Kayli & Duncan being Kew's best. It was a great game and a credit to both clubs, and the day was topped off with a good exhibition from the men in white - Mark Hockey & Simon Hourigan .

Roll on 2nd Semi !

The battle of the Universities continued with Monash taking the points . Blacks worked well for 3 quarters and in their usual stylew Monash were just behind . In the last quarter, Monash did most of the attacking against the wind and in the last few minutes kicked some great goals to seal Blacks fate . For Monash it meant 5th spot and for Blacks -it was the lowest position they have been in the history of the club . Despite all that both sides had a wonderful sing-a-long in the Pavvy afterwards . They tell me their combined effort of a greatest hits album is soon to be released .

In the other two games, Fawkner easly overcame Ivanhoe in a game which gave Fawkner a promising note to end on . Har ry Busst again proved he is Fawkner's best player with a great display in the ruck . BulleenTemplestowe stepped up their performance in a comfortable win against Caulfield . I wonder is Caulfield really thought they could be relegated and maybe weren't desperate enough? Taking nothing away from Bulleen/Templestowe it was a good win which they needed for this week's game .

In the first semi today Bulleen/Templestowe play Therry and the odds look to be against the bullants . Results this year have swun heaily in favour of Therry Round 5 Ther ry 18.17.125Bull/Temp 11 .11 .77 Round 14 Therry 24.14.156Bu1l/Temp 8 .12 .60 I'm sure that it won't be as one sided today . The problem is Therry's inconsistency. If Therry play their best football Bulleen/Templestowe will struggle . Both teams like the big ground however Therry rely a little too much on the handball . Neither side have too many big men so by most accounts they are similar . However, Therry have more depth . Some interesting duels will be Espenchied ( CHB-BT) & Biddlestone ( CHF-T), Matton (BP-T) minding George, Smith & Nyman in the centre Farley ( BT) & D'Andrea or P.Crotty (T) on the wing and Heath (BT-HFF) & Flaherty (HBF-T) .

Both teams should be at full strength and it will be an attacking game with small men and flankers dominating on the wide open spaces at Elsternwick Park . My tip is Therry by about 20-25 points but I'm not convinced that they will be right mentally judging on past performances . Bulleen/Templestowe are definitely in with a chance - Finals games are a different story!

I expect Marcellin to be competitive early, but as the game progresses Xavs greater all round skill and talent combined with a fierce desire to have another crack at both Ormond and the Old Paradians will see the Club move into the Preliminary Final .

And a thought on 'B' Section . Therry worry me but deep down they may just remember the devastation of last years draw and the subsequent losses and find enough to halt Bulleen/Templestowe and move onto the Preliminary Final .

Southa's C Section Selection s

I hope the typesetters were able to read this week's tear-smudged contribution after Old Haileyburians' dismal performance at Sandringham . Old Brighton played magnificent football all day and had they kicked straight could have won by ten goals . It was incredible that at the last change the Bloods were still in the game being only 21 points down kicking home with a four-goal breeze . Two quick goals early in the last quarter would really have made a game of it .

Haileybury may now boast a fine academic reputation but their footballers showed no such intelligence when the attacking and defensive sides of the beachside oval were as clear as the Liberals' attitude to Asian immigration .

It was a sad day for the veterans too, Wayne Shand retiring early in the piece and Roger Paul finding no joy in his 200th game. The Bloods' future certainly lies with their talented youth such as Gar ry Phillips, utility Glen Tanner & Andrew Walden, but a lack of finals experience hardly helped in this instance.

Old Melburnians also take a rest this week, albeit a temporary one, having already secured their return to 'B' Grade with a solid win over Banyule. Ian McMullin played a tremendous part as a loose man on the back line when OM's kicked against the wind, taking countless marks, being too fast and setting up opportunities for his centreline players with precision kicking . One of his drop-punts from the goal-square bounced on the other side of the centre circle, Ed Cordner's early goals and the performance of Syd "The Ram" Mead in shadowing Holt were also important contributions "Futch" Seccull returned to true form and wingman Richard Webb played his best game for the season in a constructive, disciplined effort . The day was really made for OMs to exploit any lack of pace in their opposition, although it is perhaps surprising that a running side such as Banyule could be found wanting in this department. Our navy blue friends will also choose their Grand Final team from an injury-free list fuller than Sir Les Patterson after a big night at the local Chinese Restaurant - are you with me ?

Now looking somewhat beleagured after four losses in six games, Banyule face Old Brighton, who no doubt will look forward to returning to the scene of last week's triumph . Who would have thought even four weeks ago (when the two clashed at Elsternwick Park) that Brighton are a real chance to gain promotion and Banyule are a real chance to miss out? Given morale at each club the locals could even be considered as warm favourite for today's encounter. You wouldn't have to be Clive Robertson to utter the single comment, 'Amazing' : Although Peter Adams & G reg Sutterby tried hard in the second-semi, some of Banyulds other stars didn't have great days to remember . Marcus Fraumano even found himself on the bench for a time, reflecting his team's form and fortunes which have gone backwards of late . Found out on Elsternwick Park's wide wings, they will find that the long Sandringham ground is worse for trying to his faulty scheme than the bottom of Sydney Harbour with the knowledge gained from last weeks' game, a host of finals experience and pace through the agency of P ryor and Co., Brighton may have just as much success at the taxman .

Woff was outstanding in the ruck with his vigour and mobility around the ground . Banyule's Moonie, who tried hard last week against OMs Best & Fairest Winner Rohan Brown, will find it two exhausting games in a row if the Bears again try to match their opposing ruckman's athleticism with someone other than Dave Williams.

Peter "Budda" Grant did for Brighton what McMullin did for OMs when loose in defence, and his brother And rew's radar was working weel too when it came to finding the ball . One player who could do anyhing if he kicks straight is the cocky Dave Cochran, who should perhaps be called The Grasshopper after him jumping areobatics in front of goal over State fullback Mike Constable Bennett, James & O'Connor also put in solid contributions which just goes to show what the lesser lights can do in finals games when the big guns are marked . Banyule too have a solid back-up, including Foster, Jason Fraumano & Carlson . Its sad to see what had been such a great season go to waste, but I think today will be an extremely disappointing one for Banyule . * OLD CAREY * Congratulations from everyone at Old Carey to our Captain Simon "Legs" Legear on being runner-up in the 'F' Grade Best and Fairest . 'Legs' missed 4 games and may have gained enough votes if he had played them all, however congratulations to the winner, Mick Cannon of Williamstown .

Will be interesting to see how our own B & F vote count goes on 9th September.

adder leader Hampton Rovers returned to C Grade by disposing of P re ston in an impressive manner. Ian Rice (HR coach) selected a strong combination willing to tackle hard, keen to rebound the ball and convincingly ~,utmark their Preston opponents . The Rovers had winning combinations all over the ground . The centre line -i Shaun Devereaus, Wayne Capp and particularly B rett Hibbs had first use of the ball . The full forward line - i McConville, Lawson & Hutchinson eventually overpowered the Preston backs . In defence Wylie Austin . P[); Ga ry Phillips quiet and Peter Wilson again ever reliable provided a spring board of attack . The move - i the match was the tagging of Mark Mason by Eddie Melnjak . Mark never had an influence on the game. ;cung Matt Salmon dominated the rucks in the second half, resulting in the ball moving quickly to full forwar d are Alf Panagiotidis finished with 8 goals . Preston appeared jaded and apart from a good first quarter ,e ier liiked likely to win . To their credit they kept running and this will hold them in good stead for todays game . setter players for Preston were Turner in the ruck, B rydson, ruck orving and again a steady performance from Peter Yendell. The first semi final saw Old Mentonians drop out of the race after having an excellent second ,,aGGf of the season . Bulleen United have had their measure all season, culminating in a decisive win last week .

Tiie Bulls have now won 9 games on the trot, an amazing performance considering they were in 9th spot in ,a~md 8. Bulleen's strength lies in their running players. John Empey in the centre pathed the way for their :;Ili . Rovers Mark Kelly & Gar ry Taylor provided the linking and Ray Pascoe & Har ry Robe rt s tagged OM's racks Norton & Sly. Mimi Michael finished play up forward with 5 goals . In all, a fine team effort by Bulleen .

OM's on the other hand never used the wind to their advantage, opportunities went begging at vital times . Better ;, iayers on the day were Sly in the ruck, Bournon on the half forward line and Nick Macquire roving the packs. ,,, todays preliminary final P re ston take on Bulleen United, in what should be a fast and furious game . Both - ubs have never been beyond this grade, so the future lies on the result today P reston must make changes o their line up. Without unsettling the side, players of the calibre of Des Hutchinson & Scott McGowan must -erform to bolster the forward line . Preston impressed me last week, even though they were outgunned by 'tie Rovers, they still managed to be within a couple of goals half way through the final quarter, and still running ^ard . On the other hand Bulleen have now established a full compliment of players, all in good form and have and the winning touch . .Vho will win - I've had a great deal of trouble selecting the winner, Bulleen hae done nother wrong of late and have strung together many wins, but I brelieve the Rovers and Preston have proven to ve the best sides ,~ the competition - P re ston to be promoted .

PLAYER PROFIL E -ongratulations to Mark Mason ( Preston) on winning the L .S . Pepper Medal for the Best and Fairest player It D Grade. Mark amassed an incredible 35 votes to easily win. Marks ability to win the ball and finish off in tyle obviously took the umpires eye.

Alf Panagiotidis (Hampton Rovers) congratulations on winning this seasons goal kicking. Alf has now kicked 7 goals and I'm sure the magic ton will come in the Grand Final next week . Alf has very strong hands, good isposal and unlike many full forwards is willing to pass to a better position for the sake of the team . - Well done Alf.

Personality Pars 150 UP FOR "LIVO " Last week, the 2nd Semi Final saw the 150th game if one of the favourite sons of Aquinas . Shane Livingstone, or LIVO as he is affectionately known as been with the club almost from the start . After c :aying his first game in the Reserves, Livo was very nuickly promoted the next week, to the Seniors where r~e has played the majority of his games, only playing nother three in the two's .

?Ithough it was noted early in his career that Livo likes o kick goals, he has produced his best football olaying on the half back flank . Livo's consistency has ,Âťeant that in the last few years he is almost an automatic selection in the Seniors, as not many can H his boots on his flank .

Off the field too, Livo has shown the way with his unstinting support at Social Functions. This year after joining the Committee, he has played a valuable role in the decision-making of the Club and has brought forward many new ideas in fundraising that are both enjoyable and profitable .

Congratulations Livo, from all at Aquinas and lets see if your can make it the double century .

CONGRATULATIONS Parkside Coach finally gets married .

All at Parkside would like to congratulate Wayne 'Banno' Bannister on his wedding last Wednesday to Carmel 'Chicken Queen' Chiminelio . Giving Banno away was another football legend Jack King, giving Carmel away was Telecom .

Once again everybody at Parkside wishes the happy couple a long and happy marriage .

E Section Report by John Palme r

Last weeks 1st semi final saw Old Essendon bow out of the race for D Section in 1989 . Powerhouse ran out comfortable 38 point winners in the match at Ransford oval . With first use of a good breeze Old Essendon could not get its act together and gain any advantage . The Powerhouse defence was rock solid and with a more determined approach at the ball, the House team virtually had the game stitched up at quarter time .

Even though it was at the 10 minute mark of the third quarter before the Dons kicked their second goal, they were not totally out of the game - 26 points behind at 3/4 time . In a spirited fight-back they narrowed this margin to 7 points during the final stanza but the Powerhouse boys steadied, regained their ascendancy and powered away in good style. My best for Powerhouse were Phillips, Stafford & Sarosi while G .Thompson, Crameri & Day were good contributors for Old Essendon .

Congratulations should also be extended to field umpires Eastwood & Simpson for an excellent display .

In the second semi final Whitefriars gained itself a grand final berth and a place in D Section next year with a victory over Aquinas by 1 solitary point . That is all it takes to win a game and, in a final especially, "an inch is as good as a mile . " The Friars were lucky to get the result here as Aquinas led 6 .10 to 1 .2 at half time and were clearly playing the better bootball . However, instead of continuing on and playing to win the game, Aquinas concentrated more on defensive tactics and with some strong play around the packs by McLelland, Whitefriars kicked 4 goals in the last 10 minutes to take the game. For Aquinas it was probably more the case of them snatching defeat from the jaws of victory but they are still in the contest . Wright played well all day on the wing for Aquinas .

Todays preliminary is at Coburg, strange territory for both teams . Contests are even during the year with 1 win apiece. Powerhouse have taken all before them in the past couple of weeks . A win against Old Geelong to make the four followed by another good one last week . The grand final type atmosphere continues for them today and Glyn Evans will ensure they are well prepared for a shot at D Section .

Aquinas are also travelling well . A good win over the top side 2 weeks ago and going under by the narrowest margin last week .They will be keen to win and get another crack at the Friars . The tough part - selecting the winner. In a very even game, a reasoned solution is impossible for me . A toss of the coin and the heads have come up for Aquinas .

Finally let me congratulate E Section Best and Fairest winners Mark Wilkinson (Aquinas) and Bernie Tierney (Whitefriars) . Both players received 14 votes to tie for the Jack Fullarton Medal . A great effort chaps and no doubt your performances have had a fair bit to do with your teams' successes this year.

Feelings of inadequacy have dogged me since then and my hangdog expresssion has been variously _onipared to Clyde "Share" Holding emerging from the Cabinet Room to "Dirty" Dan Quayle flicking through ;; backcopy of Playboy (something about a bird in the hand is worth trouble to Bush) .,,,ell the march of the Sainters was stopped fairly and squarely by the Gdansk-like Solidarity displayed by Keith Wilson's Doves. In a game in which Wilsons of various colours managed to boot 13 majors, it was the »ercurial Mick Wilson Jun who made the difference in a upset result . Roland Magro's boys would have been ;neH-shocked but perhaps thats underestimating the resolve which the Doves took into the game. Apart from MWJ, who booted a six-pack, the Doves were well served by strong contributions from "Anthony" Burgess, Hinges, GoTo and "Nosey" Parker. The Saints centurion, Terry Wilson fought valiantly for 5 goals whilst ~iher good players included Russell Lowe, Princess DiGanni and Wayne "They all love me" Chamra . For n e Sainters it was a disappointment after a tremendous second half of the season . It's a long wait,but they're ;;ound to be a force in F-Grade in 1989 . ,;leanwhile, at Bulleen, La Tro be exploded the hopes of Old Carey in a way reminiscent of a General Zia joy ° ght . The Students took the bit in Rancho Ruler style and are now 1989 E-Graders (congratulations Peter 0'D!) and 1988 Flag favourites .

Ina Students better players included "Kissin" Cousins, "Cess" Poole, "Ever" Green and "Aristotle" Athanasakis . Old Carey who deserve their second chance had good players in "Jeremy" Oliver (a vintage _,x), "Don" Chipp, "Blunt" Cutlack and coach Kelvin Shaw .

H SECTION GRAND FINA L Old Xaverians & St . Kevins who meet today to decide the premiership, have met only once this season or, April 16 when the Old Xaverians won by ninety five points . That day Xaverians forward Prowse had a big influence on the game with six goals . Can he repeat the effort today? Giffin the St . kevin's goalsneak could also be a match winner if he is given sufficient opportunities to win the ball . I favour the Old Xaverians to win this match because they have won each game convincingly this season . Results speak for themselves and they show the all round Xaverians strength and talent .

G SECTION GRAND FINA L Bloods & Bulleen/Templestowe who meet for the fourth time this season to decide the Premiership, have proven themselves the two best sides in the competition during 1988 . Bulleen Templestowe are the only side to defeat won their May 21 game Bloods this season . . . by six points in a low scoring contest on July 16 while Bloods by twenty six points and the Second Semi Final by twenty five points . The Bloods have the more versatile forward line with Hutchinson & Wittey both being reliable avenues to goal . Bulleen Templestowe goals, on the other hand, have not come from any particular forward . Players to watch today by Bloods include Slater & Lockart must nullify who have done well for Bulleen Templestowe in previous games while Bulleen Templestowe Mattingley, G . McAsey & Johnson who have caused them problems in previous games . Fitness will prove an important factor in deciding the result of this game . Will Bloods lack match practice or will Bulleen Templestowe's extra match have blunted their running game? These answers will only become known as the game unfolds. I select Bloods to win what should be a good game.

REVIEW OF MATCHES PLAYED AUGUST 20th 1988 UNDER 19 SECTION 1 (ROUND 18) Collegians ensured their place in the section for 1989 when they finished too strongly for Bulleen Templestowe and recorded a twenty one point victory . Collegians took the lead in the second quarter and although Bulleen Templestowe had reduced it to a solitary point at the last change Collegians rallied in the last quarter to win by twenty one points.

Old Xaverians defeated Melbourne High School Old Boys by fifty nine points in the High School's last to help the appearance in the section until at least 1990 . The result of the main game of the round did nothing critics select the winner of next week's second semi final as Marcellin & De La Salle Blue played a tie . Marcellin may have been unlucky as they had five more scoring shorts . However bad kicking is bad football and credit must go to the De La defenders for the pressure they applied to the Marcellin forwards. Next week will ive the sides another opportunity to prove who is the superior side . Old Paradians Green had a good win over by thirty nine points Old Haileybu ry in heavy conditions at Bundoors . After a slow start the Paradiansin won the race for fourth place. which meant they were still nine. and a quarter percent short of University Blues The Blues had a week's rest because they received a forfeit from Therry .

UNDER 19 SECTION 2 (ROUND 18 ) Old Scotch continued on their winning way with a one hundred and six point victory over CBC St . Kilda who now head back to Section 3 after two season's absence . Ormond were largely untroubled when they outplayed rising ascendency when they Old Melburnians to record a seventy two point victory . Banyule proved their difficulty with the Banyule inflicted Whitefriars first defeat by forty six points . As I predicted Whitefriars did have breezes as indicated by their marked inaccuracy . Credit must go to Banyule defenders and on ball players for pressuring their opponents . University Blacks farewelled Section 2 with a fifteen point victory over the disappointing and inaccurate No rt h Old Boys. The No rt herners had an equal number of scoring shots so they can only blame themselves. St. Bernards received a forfeit from Caulfield Grammarians .

UNDER 19 SECTION 3 (ROUND 18 ) Hampton Rovers vindicated my selection and the fears expressed by the Old Paradians brain's trust when they defeated the leaders by forty eight points . Inaccuracy in front of goal almost cost Old Brighton Grammarians must be causing victory over De La Salle Gold who failed by only three points . This form on the eve of the finals concern to Brighton's coach Robert Draper . Conversely De La Coach, Pat Sheedy can reflect on the imporvements made by his charges as the season has progressed . . Parkside ended Monash Blues clearly had the better of Aquinas as they won their game by fifty seven points their season tamely as Old Essendon Grammarians forfeited to them . St . Kevin's had the bye.

PREVIEW OF GAMES TO BE PLAYED, AUGUST 27, 1988 UNDER 19 SECTION 1 FIRST SEMI FINA L old Xaverians & University Blues meet in this do or die encounter at Ormond . When the sides met on May - t he Blues won by ten points . However in the return game scheduled for July 2, the Blues forfeited to the old Xaverians . Thus there is little to go on in the way of prior form . On May 7 the key cXaverians forwards Connors & Go ro zides troubled the Blues defenders who should again face problems with this pair today . The ,,iented Blues trio McCa rt y, Nicholls & Walton who did well against the Xaverians in Round 5 have all ha d Section experience and they should serve their side well today . The Blues have had problems being competitive e College football finished and today I expect the Old Xaverians will prove strong enough to win this game well .

UNDER 19 SECTION 2 FIRST SEMI FINAL Banyule & Old Scotch meet on the Ross Grego ry Oal which will prove more strange to Banyule than Old Scotch because of its layout and size. Banyule have been the great improvers as the season has progressed 11 h"rle old Scotch have consolidated their team play under the coaching of that astute veteran mentor Laurie Aghan . At their July 30 meeting Banyule won by the minimum margin after a low scoring contest . Turnbull & Hagan are consistent bell getters around the ground for Banyule as is Knight . If the Club plays Dale Bo ttomley defence he will prove very difficult for Old Scotch to pass . For Old Scotch consistently good players have ee~ Hooper, Kerr & hend ry. After careful consideration I am selecting Banyule to win the match .

UNDER 19 SECTION 2 SECOND SEMI FINA L Ciear leaders Whitefriars play Ormond today at Monash University. While Whitefriars has been seriously ;hallenged only once Ormond has suffered serious setbacks at the hands of both Whitefriars & Banyule.

Whitefriars HAVE supplied four of the five leading Section 2 oalkickers and their team work and style of play a : e won them an enviable reputation. In their previous encounters this season Whitefriars have won by seventeen and fifty nine points respectively . Crowe for Whitefriars in both games, and McConvil & Moloney have done ,.all for Ormond on each occasion . Today I am in no doubt that cWhitefriars will win this game and by so doing earn themselves promotion to Section 1 for Season 1989 .

UNDER 19 SECTION 3 FIRST SEMI FINA L Monash Blues & Hampton Rovers meet in this do or die match at Brighton Beach Oval, where local climatic conditions can play havoc with tactics of teams unfamiliar with the oval . Monash Blues have won both encounters i, :s season : by four points at the University on May 7 and by twenty four points at Hampton on July 2 . To counteract these wins the Rovers won well on this oval in Round 17 when they defeated Old Brighton by nineteen poin Is . Roberts has proven a real headache for Monash as had Vine while ruckman Crawford has proven a formidable opponent . For Monash to be sure of success Captain Andrew Headber ry and athletic forward Newman must nullify Crawford and shut out the Rovers forward moves . I expect a good contest from :vnich I favour Hampton Rovers to emerge victorious.

SECOND SEMI FINAL The two leading sidesOld Paradians & Old Brighton Grammarians will meet for the right to compete in Section 2 at De La Salle's Ground . Each side has won at home against the other during the season and in addition he Old Paradians won on this ground on July 23. My Brighton P.R . has told me the Grammarians are confident of victory while I know the Paradians are quietly confident they can win . Old Brighton have had the more active forwards so the Old Paradians defenders will have to be constandly aware of their position and that of their opponents . Sibby, Joyce & Pimmenthal should control the aerial duels while Joel Stencil has been a vital nk in many Paradians moves during the season . The elusive Gavan Rodriques has proven a consistent forward ror Parade while Hill has starred for Old Brighton in both encounters, while Ryan has proven a sure avenue 'o goal for them . The Paradians to win must counter these two players. The Paradians like to run with the ball and exchange hand passes as they sweep up the field . The fitness of Old Brighton was questioned at Bundoora . :hen the Paradians came from behind to win . Given this doubt and the Paradians determination I select Old Paradians Purple to win .

150 UP FOR RINGE R St Kevins Old Boys congratulate Steve "Slugger" Ring on reaching the 150 game mark in this Saturday's H Grade grand final . During the last 10 years Steve has always given 100% on field whether as a dependable backman or a low flying forward .

Steven commenced his career in the Club 18 before graduating to Reserves and then gave a cameo senior performance in 1986 . Now mixing C and H grades, he could be the stopper Curly is seeking .

Always the diplomat, one can be confident that Steve will the ideal club representative for any social occasion, with his fine dress sense and gentlemanly behaviour.

In all finals matches the team which has finished in the higher position on the Premiership ladder at the conclusion of the home and away matches shall (a) Wear its registred uniform for home matches and have choice of rooms, unless there is a clash of uniforms when V.A.F.A . The team finishing in the lower position shall (a) Wear its registered uniform for away matches or in the event of a clash conform with Rule 46 (white shorts only permitted) .

If a change of uniform is required particulars of the substituted uniform must be advised to the Editor of the Amateur Footballer on the Monday morning prior to the match . (b) Provide the following (i) One goal umpire's coat . (ii) Goal and boundary umpires IN CASE REQUIRED (iii) Timekeeper.

The winning club shall be responsible for complying with the Press Correspondent's requirements which were printed in the Amateur Footballer on August 6th .

Footballs for all finals matches will be provided by the Association and the cost borne equally by the competing Clubs . Winning club will have choice of balls.

Fines will be strictly imposed for uniforms not up to standard . i .e. correctly sewn on numbers . Numbers must accord with those appearing in the Amateur Footba!!er . Your club is on show - LOOK THE PART!!

Clubs whose grounds are used for finals matches have first refusal on the provision of canteen facilities .

Should the home club not wish to take advantage the offer moves to the competing club which finished in the higher position at the end of the home and away matches .

Extra time shall be played in any drawn match of the reserve grade or G or H Section .

When the final siren sounds the players will remain on the field, change ends and in the meantime the goal umpires will meet and confirm that the scores are in fact level . Once confirmation is notified to the field umpire, 5 minutes plus time on will be played after which the siren will be sounded . The teams will cross straight over (without an address from coach) and play another 5 minutes plus time on . In the event that the scores are still level the match will be declared a draw and replayed the following week .

** * Last Thursday was quite a day for the VAFA. At a special function at the MCG to launch the A and B Section final series former Amateur under-19 star and former Carlton, Hawthorn and Fitzroy Coach, David Parkin announced that the Victorian Health P ro motion Foundation would jointly sponsor (along with National Mutual) the 1988 Final series and 1989 season.

After presenting VAFA President, Jim Hawkins with the cheque, Jim took the opportunity to introduce the Association's new 'Promotions Officer' Mr. G re g Paine. Greg is a current Amateur Football with Caulfield Grammarians (and notched up his 50th game last week - see page 42 Vol . 88 No . 19 of the Amateur Footballer) and recently completed a degree of Bachelor of Applied Science at FIT with major studies in Physical Education .

Greg is 22 and commenced work at Elsternwick Park last Friday . One of this first tasks will be to organize an umpire's clinic during the coming school holidays for "in school" umpiring panels and other interested boys and girls .

'OTF' wishes Greg the best of luck and thanks the VHPF for its generous sponsorship and support of Amateur Football .

Paul Rapke recently completed his 50th game as a field umpire with the VAFA . Paul is in his 3rd year with ne amateurs having previously been a boundary umpire with the VFA for many years and then joining the S .E .S.F.L. here he commenced as a field umpire . Paul is now completing his 20th season as an umpire and has officiated n over 400 games . Well done Paul, your 100 awaits you .

Not to be deterred he took up the flags and ast week was promoted to A Grade between the big sticks . With this kind of dedication we're sure that Jeff will be the first umpire to do 'A' Grade in the goals before he does 'A' grade on the field . Keep it up Jeff and well done.

It seems a lot of our field umpires are having boot problems, what with all the mud around maybe they are being over-washed . I doubt it ; but it's marvellous what a bit of tape will do . Especially so the observers can't see it .

To all those umpires who get finals in this series congratulations on achieving your goals. As we all know, finals are different ball games so its nice to finish the year off on a high note . Enjoying the game is the key .

2ND SEMI FINAL - 5 YEARS AGO - 1983 Mick Deveson ( De La Salle) won 'A' Section Best and Fairest with 18 votes, defeating Michael Yeo (Uni Blues) and Peter Gittos (Ivanhoe) 15. Former Carnival and interstate player Wayne Blay (Kew) topped 'B' Section with 22 to win easily from Mark Sedgwick (Coburg), Ga ry Valiance (Alph .) and David Hackett (Old Camberwell) 15 .

'C' Section was won by Charlie Capiron ( St Kilda CBOC) 19 from David Matthews ( Caulfield GR) 17.

De La surprised 'A' Section followers with a victory over the more fancied Blues, winning 15.15 to 13.7 to go into the 'A' Section grand final . Best were Greene, Deveson, S . Murphy, (3 goals) (De La) and Wood, D . Curnow, Kay (Uni Blues) . Goal Umpire Don McKenzie waved the flags at his 250th game - a quiet, likeable modest man who travels to all his matches and social functions by public transport in rain, hail or shine.

Xavs staged a fighting finish and drew level with a goal kicked only a few seconds before the final siren . In the replay, Collegians established an early lead and were never in danger of defeat .

St Kilda CBC, in an impressive debut in 'E', finished on top of the ladder and defeated U. Reds by 2 points in second semi, while ANZ beat Old Brighton by 8 points in first semi .

OLD SCOTC H Two of the best players for Old Scotch Under 19's last week were Andrew Millar & Tom Wilson now both playing after the finish of the APS season . Both played well in a team which played well together. Eleven players kicked goals in a good all round performance .

100 GAMES TO BULL STEVE GODFREY Bulleen Templestowe congratulate dashing winner Steve Godfrey on his entry into the 100 games Club.

Another player from the Bulls' 1982 U1 team . It is good to see so many of that side stick together in the football club;s mateship, and 'Goof' is a prime example of the friendliness at Bulleen .

A speedy player who makes good position and used the wide open space that this provides, Steve is of great value to the Bulls moving the ball quickly - and with great skill . He is certainly not the kind of wingman that goes missing though, he will go and get the ball and then create the space out of nowhere, he will readily drop back to pick up a loose man, and is disciplined so that he never crowds the forwards.

Truly the perfect player for a winger . Well done Goof, and many more to come .

Personality Pars ANOTHER 50 AT MARCELLI N Adrian Galla g her is one of the most naturally gifted footballers at Ntarcellin . He recently celebrated his 50th game with the poise and grace he has exhibited over the first 49 games and he seems certain to be one of the club's prime movers now that it has established itself in A Grade.

Well done Gags, we're all looking forward to heaps more in the next 50.

Andy Finnigan may have created some sort of record at Marcellin for the most number of games played in the Under 19s . His 50th was played some time ago and went by without recognition and he has now played some 63 games with the juniors . It is a mighty effort by our very own "Broady Boy" and with the dedication and commitment he has shown so far he looks set to become one of the club's real stalwarts .

Paul Chappell is one of those blokes football cannot do without. Always seen at club functions, and ready to do his bit for the club, 'Chaps' was another eagle who recently notched his 50th game for the club .

Already the prous possesser of the Jack Wood Trophy for services to the club, Paul has been great around the place and all at Marcellin congratulate him on his achievement .

The curly locks of Andrew Cooper have been seen scouting the boundaries for the thirds for a few years now and it was good to see the streaky wingman chalk up his 50th game with Marcellin recently . An honest toiler who every now and again performs feats unseen before on football fields, he has reached his milestone with a minimum of fuss and lets hope that there are plenty more games to come for 'Coops' .

For Mark Delahunt the last two or three years have been a constant struggle against an injury problem which five years ago looked like ending his football

career and even though the problem hasn't completely cleared up. "Della" has overcome it to become a really important footballer at Marcellin . A schoolboy champion, Mark is another to reach the half century recently and he is playing as well as he ever has presently. Lets hope that the next 50 come a little easier for 'Della' and lets see you really burn at Elsternwick in the finals . Well done .

Like a Pamplona Bull, Joe Amad loves nothing more than a marrow-munching, one-on-one contest and in his 50 games to date he has probably bruised a few opposition centremen with his straight aheas approach . A key player with Marcellin and a vital link man across the centre, Joey has followed in the illustrious footsteps left by his brother Tony and continues the Arab connection down with the Eagles .

Well cone Joseph, lets see many more like the first 50 .

The heartiest congratulations go out to James 'Gooey' Golds upon reaching his 100 game milestone . One of Marcellin's real identities, Gooey has worked on his game as hard as anyone in the past few years and has reaped the rewards playing many senior games with the Eagles and being a key player in the Club's push to secure a spot in A Grade.

A tireless trainer and a model to all youngsters, we congratulate Jamie and lets see you set your sights on Tommy Butler's club record .

Timmy O'Hehir has been a tower of strength at the Marcellin Football Club for many years now . A versatile key position man, Tim has been used to plug many holes in the seniors and was a key at full forward in the B Grade finals of 1985 . Tim has had to overcome his share of injury problems, but he has finally reached the 100 game milestone - a landmark in his career which is thoroughly deserved . Congratulations Tim, lets see those injuries subside and hope that the next 100 come a little easier .

Bernards OCFC and against St Bernards OCFC for conduct prejudicial to the interests of or conduct unbecoming a member of the Association in that its Acting Chairman J. Taylor did offer T . Young, Fawkner $2000 and perks, if he would sign with St Bernards for remainder of 1988 season .

Taylor found guilty and suspended from holding an office at the Club until 1/1/91 .

Bernards OCFC found guilty and (1) suspended from fielding a side (first and seconds) .in(2)the That the Club competition for the remainder of the season and that the Club be drawn in B Section in 1989 be fined $5000 which is to be paid on or before the 30th September, 1988 or at such time as the Executive may direct . *NOTE : St Bernards Old Collegians Football Club sought the granting of an injunction to restrain the VAFA from proceeding further with the imposition of the above penalties save that imposed on Mr . J . Taylor.

On Thursday, August 18th, 1988, Mr. Justice Vincent of the Supreme Court of Victoria found the "the Plaintive" (St . Bernards) must fail and directed St .
