Damien Buttler ( a n o .i mc ;,, ! to miss out on the side) and Damien Zammitt were good Ts while Simon Abrahams and 200 gamer Frisina got the plaudits for Marcellin . were suspect . Flashy, packed with stars, b susceptible to a bit of brute force . Thing is, their 2006 Old Boys side bears little resemblance to the stereotype. Barry Price's team is low-key, very even and hard at it . Will a team that plays a "close in" brand of footy be suited to the expanses o f Sportscover Arena against a bunch of fleet footed running machines? Didn't seem to bother Xavs in last year's GF, Scotch by four goals . Uni were smacked around by Haileybury in Round 2 and will be desperate to extract some sort of revenge . Bank on them to continue to gather momentum and to send Haileybury coach Nicho in further apoplectic rage ! The Junction Oval is in amazingly good nick ar could be the setting for a massive upset, if 10th beating 9th qualifies as that . . .,OMs by 2 points . I'll tip the third upset of the day and select St Bernards to beat Xavs, who actually have a very good record at the 'Pit but are terribly , -~'_ ;;, - :_ J . Old Brighton took a much better attitude and a more positive attack on the ball in the game against MHSOB at the wind swept South Road .A new balcony was in place after months of red tape and with Health and Safety in place, Andy and Orch had to timekeep through the bars . Back to the football, it was the Tonners' ability to score into the wind that got the points from the Unico s~I a fielded a side containing 9 Under 19s . Unfortunately in B Grade you cannot afford to mL :;e mistakes and turn the ball over on a regular basis . them, the Blacks will come ready to play . MHSOB, although not winning have been thereabouts and are full of enthusiasm, and tough to beat at home but I feel this will change today as the Blacks continue their improvement and win again . Leura Road welcomes Old Brighton in the Match of the Round . Was impressed with what I saw of the Bombers last week, they were awesome and looked in good touch . And at home they play even better which in all reality is not encouraging for the Tonners . Still below top strength, will make it harder for the visitors and while having faith in their ability it's my preference for the home side that sees me tipping Old Essendon today . availability, player motivation, evaluation of opposition strengths & weakness and countering opposition plays & tactics while developing your own . It's a great challenge.

An interview conducted by AFCA VAFA executive member, Geoff Reilley, with St Bernards' Senior Coach, Simon Madden - PART 2

SPi: The quality of the people involved, the standard of the football and the nature of the competition . GR : A .^ t' ai , ; r' the VAFA' operations that yo' woui is r >ing ? SR I'll openly say I'm on my soap box here . I am a great advocate for representative football . I have been involved directly in Victorian teams and believe it makes you a better footballer for your involvement . But I find it amazing that in 2006 the VAFA chose to have a representative game against VtAAFL and a normal home and away round on the same weekend . This restricted 22 players from playing for the clubs . To me, taking your best 22 players out of the competition for that round denigrates the competition . I don't agree with the administrative reasons I've been given for the choice . To me if your competition is important enough, you will be able to find a solution that does not pit the internal competition against an external competition . At League level I've seen such a conflict pressure clubs and coaches into discouraging their players from being involved in representative football which I strongly disagree with and would not want to see in the VAFA . GR: What are greatest challenges you find each week as a senior VAR coach ?

SR I think it is a very even competition this year, more so than last season . Obviously the teams up the top have a better chance of success at the end of the year but I believe any team can beat any other team on any given day . ,e °"°re any players in particula•, `-m "_ ~hih or :lobs, that impress you as _ i by to ;i .he next level ? SM: I've seen a number of players that have the ability to play at a higher level but ability alone will not get you theire . Passion, persistence and drive on top of the talent are what separate the stand out players from the rest . Those are the things that are hard to measure and which you don't see unless you are closely involved with a player. GR : Can r you ha a-

ae :,inn nh : • , :,u and d o

S h9: Enjoyment, Development and Competition are the three underlying foundations of my philosophy. You have to enjoy your football first, if you are not doing that why are you involved? That's not a simple "let's have some fun" attitude but the enjoyment that comes from taking on a challenge and giving it your best effort . Then on top of that you have to look for continual development and consistently being competitive in all phases of the game . foryourtime,yo v

Now we all love a bit of niggle, whether on or off-field, as long as it stays within the bounds of decency . Apparently there was plenty of it at David Street where the Kiss of Death failed the Rovers badly (sorry guys!!) . Whilst a 7 goal blitz in the final 10 minutes saw the margin blow out, the Tigers were in control for most of the afternoon . The Tigers kicked into the breeze and somehow managed to generate 13 scoring shots, through the midfeild dominance of Sam Anstey (38 touches) and Tim McColl . With the breeze at their backs, STBMT were always a chance of banging on plenty, but had managed to register a staggering 18 behinds, despite the work of Jon Kane up front and Steve Kidd down back . To their credit, Hampton drew within 4 goals nearing the final break, but the injection of Aaron Sawers provided a renewed spark for the Tigers who flew home on the back of a 5 goal last quarter by Luke Terrill . Gary Carr was best for the Rovers with good efforts by Paul Adams and Nick Henry . A classic North Balwyn northerly provided a 4 to 5 goal advantage to the pavilion end of the GBO, but Monash failed to make full use of this in the first term, with only a 13 point buffer the result. The OC defence were to be commended for their close checking, but the midfield also matched up tight to deny the Monash boys room to create . With the hint of a zephyr at their backs, the home side proceeded to pile on 7 goals to 3 to hit the sheds with a 2 goal break . They were winning the stoppages and rebounding quickly from defence to find a handy forward target in young Mr Loats . Let's face it, 12 goals is a day out in anyone's language, but when it represents 80% of your team's goals, you can forgive the opposition coach for stating it was the most dominant performance in his 20-odd years of VAFA experience . Still, someone had to get it to him and the likes of David Gough on his wing, Dan Pike and young Wil Austenberry were fantastic for the Wellers . Christian Gregory (somewhat prophetically) celebrated his selection in the C section Team of the Half Year with another BOG performance for Monash but, with only a 1 point lead at the final term, the visitors were always up against it and fell away by 39 points . The Jackas avenged their first round defeat with a magnificent first half which put Parkdale out of contention by halftime . AJAX were able to use the breeze well in the first term, but their 5 goals into the teeth of the gale really nailed it . Whilst AJAX had winners all over the park, it was Jason Israelsohn's hard running hard from defence which set up many forward attacks . The mercurial Anthony Rosen is starting to find great touch, and his 6 goals bodes well for the secon d 14

half of the season . With Bloom and Rappaport still finding the big sticks, the Jackas are firming as the Real Deal for 2006 . For Parkdale, things are looking les s rosy, but the Sullivan Brothers continue to put their hands up and Sam Hecker is starting to hit his straps too . There's time enough, if they're good enough!!! Ormond continued their improved form when they defeated North Old Boys/St Pats at Ormond on Saturday . After winning the all important toss Ormond kicked with a strong breeze and immediately had the opposition under pressure with the strong play of Michael Miller, who kicked 3 goals for the term, and a miserly defence giving Ormond a 56 point lead at the first change . It was pretty much all over at this stage, but the Combine managed to bang on 4 quick ones to get back into the match (well, kinda) . Ormond held sway thereafter to lead comfortably at the main change . Ryan Martin, Simon Keleher and Leigh Deledio dominated the midfield in the third term and built a match-winning lead, which NOBSPC simply couldn't trim . In the final game, the Reds edged out Parade at Bundoora. Marcus Matko bobbed up for the home side with 4 majors, but Tim Davis and the wily old skipper Vinnie Cahilll managed to lead their team to a crucial win . That's about the most I can make out of the feedback I received!! !

Tips The OC's match against Parkdale will be tighter than the most important hamstring in C section . Word is the big fella is out, and this tips the scales in Parkdale's favor . Vultures by 3 goals . Massive stakes in play at Le Gillon where the Combine face off against Hampton Rovers . Both sides came off important wins last week, and were 'touched up' by Ormond and St Bedes MT respectively - who will hit back? I'm on the Purple People bandwagon, NOBSPC by 22 points. Parade will fight hard throughout, but will find too much class at Brindisi Street where the Tigers will salute by 44 points . Monash must regroup quickly and hosting the Monders is not the easiest way to do so . I think the trip up North Rd will be worth it as Ormond salute by 5 goals . Finally, the Reds host the in form AJAX in the Match of the Day. I reckon an upset is brewing here, and Fitzroy may be belting out their song after a 5 point win . McGaos Wellers, NOBSPC, STBMT, Ormond, and Fitzroy .

Old Paradians congratulate !_and Vincent on their 5t,t;r VAFA games . Blake commenced with the Under 19's in 2004 coming from Parade College and one of our junior affiliate clubs, St .Damians JFC . We look forward to many more games from the stylish left footer who was a duel premiership player in the Under 19s. Glenn commenced with the Under 19's in 2003 coming from Parade College . We look forward to many more games from the big mobile ruckman who was a premiership player in the Under 19s. Old Camberw ell congratulate Ben Craven, who played his 100th Game for the club against Monash Blues in Round 10 . Benny first joined the club in 2001 through our Under 19s Team . He proved to be an integral part of their Premiership Team that season, grabbing plenty of marks at Centre Half Forward . Playing senior football from 2002, Benny has worked hard to cement a place in the club's first XVIII, becoming a more permanent member this season as a straight running defender. Well done Ben on reaching this Mark .

ROUND 10 REVIEW Emmaus St . Leo's and Old Mentonians played out the first draw of the season at the BSG . In windy conditions, the Panthers started off brilliantly, before the Animals clawed their way back . Indeed, they were two goals up with 10 minutes to go before Michael Basile kicked three goals in five minutes to regain the lead for the visitors, before the home side goaled via Tony McKenzie with seconds left to tie the game. Blake Carroll continues his rich vein of form for Old Mentonians, while Jack Pascoe down back, ruckman Stephen Ronchi and forward Scott LeClerc stood down for the Animals . Old Carey won comfortably by 42 points over Yarra Valley OB at Dunshea Oval . The performances of first-gamers Barton, Casey Ratcliffe and Luke Maslin were especially encouraging, given the Panthers' recent injury woes . The Bushrangers have also had their share of injury problems lately, and the loss of big Stevenson is foreboding if they wish to grab fourth spot. Fantastic news for the Two Blues, breaking through for their first win of the season, overcoming Therry Penola by 28 points at John Pascoe Fawkner Reserve. Dan James' play on Prahran's half back line set up many attacking opportunities, particularly in the second half . A disappointing performance by Old Geelong at Como Park saw Bulleen Templestowe bring home the bacon by 50 points . The pressure exerted by the Bullants in the midfield was the key factor in setting up the win, as sound as their defence was also. Al Munro and Jonno Malpas were amongst the Oggers' better performers . Finally, Rupertswood arrested their mini-slump by defeating Banyule by 10 points at Sunbury .

victors back in contention for a finals spot (You may not believe me, but I gotta keep the race for the four interesting, OK?) At home, I'll take the Panthers . Banyule welcome Old Geelong to R J Brockwell Reserve, looking to keep themselves out of the relegation zone . The Oggers on the rebound aren't the best opponents if you're in that kind of predicament. The Bears will need a huge game from the likes of Kyle Sheppard-Mueller, Leighton O'Donnell and James Tsigaras to give themselves the best chance against an Old Geelong outfit boasting players of the ilk of Nic Casboult, Ed Bayles and Henry McCarthy . I think the performances in midfield, and the ruck contests, will be hugely decisive in the outcome of today's match . Having said that, these teams are at their respective positions of the ladder for a reason, and whilst there is the opportunity for Banyule to cause an upset, all signs point to the Hoops . Old Geelong to win . Bulleen Templestowe and Emmaus St Leos square off at The Ted, both looking to enhance their currently contrasting positions . The Bullants are now in the top two, whilst the Animals are half a game plus %age from the safety of eighth place . Look for Steve Buckle to create chances for the Animals, and Anthony Ballard to make things happen, either in the ruck or up forward . Matt Bain and Kain Burridge starred last week and have been good players in a good team all year, while everyone knows the talents of Greg Chivers and Trent Waters . All things considered however, I think the Bullants look to be too accomplished . Bullants for mine .

I ' - 111 REVIEW First game up for review is Yarra Valley OB versus Rup ;wood at Domeney Reserve . The Bushrangers will hopefully have a number of their topliners available for selection (something like eight were absent last week, plus some more casualties during the course of the game), and will look to the Drew brothers to provide inspiration. West, Spinner and Brennan will not make things easy for the home side however. I have a gut feeling that the home side may prevail today, and I'm going to go with that feeling . Bushrangers to win, and to maintain the pressure on the sides ataove them . Two teams of a similar calibre meet at the Playing Fields as Old Mentonians play host to Therry Penola. With both teams facing an uphill battle to make the finals, a cynic may suggest that this match between the Panthers and the Lions is more like a battle of the pussycats. They may also suggest that this is a feeble attempt at wit (and they'd be right . I'm disgusted with myself .) Seriously though, it should be a good game, with some terrific players on display for both sides. A win to either side today, and other results being favourable, may put the

A buoyant Prahran take on Old Carey at Toorak Park. A dilemma of a positive nature at the Carey selectors' table, with the possible return of Collins, Zander and Travis Bull to supplement their recently arrived personnel means plenty of competition for spots in the Panthers senior side leading up to the finals . I'm sure they're not complaining . Meanwhile, the Two Blues will look to be making it two in a row if they can get past the current ladder leader. John Thwaites and Hamish Hodgson continued their recent good form, while Michael Radywonik will have an entertaining contest with whoever is handling the ruck duties for the Panthers this time out (Unkles? Basell? Hmmm . . .) Also look for Prahran's Andre Pitts to match up on Carey skipper Al Parton if "Dolly" is played as a forward for the greater part of the day . At the end of the day there can only be one winner (or none!), and it's hard to go past Old Carey . Old Carey it is, then . CONTACT I won't be at work (and possibly barely functioning after the World Cup final), so please direct all correspondence via email to theqwill@hotmail .com (please have this delivered by 5pm Monday so that I can attempt to meet my publishing deadline!) . Until next week, have a great VAFA Weekend, Yours in football, The Owil l

Old Carey wish to congratuL ' i Peter "M unter" Ilnkles on playing his 100th game last week against Yarra Valley. Munter has been a mainstay of the ruck division for several years, and has had multiple placing in the Club Champion Award . Something of a cult figure, he has achieved this status through both his on- and off-field efforts, not least his "Ahnoldt"/McBain impersonations . Well done Munter, from everyone at Old Carey. Prahran's Jarred Belcher plays his 100th game for the Two Blues this week . "Belch" has been a quiet achiever since joining the club in 1999, and is also a great stalwart of the club's social scene. Congratulations Belch from all at Prahran. Ben Symons of Old Geelong played his 50th game last week . "Symo" was a strong performer at centre half forward for the reserves last season, co-captaining them to the premiership and finishing second in their best and fairest. Work commitments have limited his appearances to the Club XVIII side, but hopefully the big man can return to a higher level soon . Well done Symo from everyone at Old Geelong.

It's hotting up in D2 with seemingly four teams battling it out for three spots in the finals . Peninsula look safe, even this far out, whilst down the bottom end of the ladder Williamstown's recent form has made the relegation battle between five clubs . Still plenty to play for in all matches . Ivanhoe Assumption AFC $2.70 v Peninsula OB $1 .40 Both clubs had great wins last week . The Hoes knocked off Aquinas at Aquinas, whilst Peninsula had a solid win over Glen Eira at home . Chris Traeger had a great match for Ivanhoe and it was great to see the experienced Colin Brown back in the senior side after a handful of games in the reserves. Peninsula were given a scare by Glen Eire but a best on ground performance by speedy onbailer Andrew Murphy and five majors from Shaun Payze got them the four points . Danger game today for Peninsula . The Hoes will be full of confidence, and if Chris Hunter can give his on-bailers first use of the ball then don't be surprised to see Ivanhoe cause an upset . However, I feel the Pirates have too much depth and think they will salute by 14 points . Glen Eira AFC $2 .10 v Werribee AFC $1 .6 5 Glen Eira were more than competitive against Peninsula, trailing by only 14 points at the last change, before running out of gas . Steve Vamvakas continued his good form on the forward line and Scott Diamond won plenty of the ball . Werribee were held scoreless in the second quarter, which led to them going down to Oakleigh by 25 points . Defenders Aaron Taylor and Pat Keogh were amongst the better players for Werribee and Ben Stornebrink added four goals up forward . Big game today for both clubs. Glen Eire need a win so they don't get dragged into the relegation struggle, and Werribee need the four points to continue their assault on the finals . Tough match to pick . Glen Eire were victorious earlier in the season by one point, but this time I am going to select Werribee by one point. Salesian AFC $1 .65 v Aquinas OG $2 .1 0 Match of the round heads to Bosco Street today with a crucial match which will go along way to decide the makeup of the top four. Salesian had a morale boosting win at La Trobe last Saturday with Simon Greely one of the stars with five goals up forward whilst consistent youngsters Ivan Bobetic and Hermit Singh continued their good form . Aquinas were well beaten in an upset at home against Ivanhoe Assumption trailing all day, an d 26

were never a realistic winning chance . Glen Whitehead had a good game down back and Sean Leonard had a good battle in the ruck but i .quinas were o :_!tplayed . Expect them to come out with a different attitude today, and be fired up for a more competitive performance . Aquinas were easy winners at home earlier in the year, but I expect that result to be reversed today . Salesian by 21 points. ohn's OC $1 .60 v La Trobe Uni $2 .2 0 Have St John's fallen into a hole? That is the question being asked down Doveton way after seven straight losses . An 82 point drubbing to bottom side Williamstown last week may certainly suggest so . However, the one thing I know about St John's is that they are always up for a fight, and with this game being played at Thomas Carroll Reserve expect to see a different St John's side on the field today. La Trobe need a win too, going down to Salesian by 38 points at home last Saturday. Terry Ludeman had a quiet game for La Trobe against Salesian, and he is certainly the key man for La Trobe . A cold, wet Doveton day is exactly the conditions that the Joc's love playing in . Dosostias is a Spanish cabaret performance opening at Chapel off Chapel this week as part of the Melbourne Cabaret Festival . It coincides with the Chapels first victory in D1 last week - the translation for dosostias is "two whacks in the head". Meanwhile, the struggling Rip Van Winkles may be heartened by Japanese inventor Kozo Sanizo who has come with a nap alarm that is triggered by the head nodding forward . Heads nod forward worldwide with the incredibly boring tennis commentary from Strawberry Fields forever - I agree with Helen Caldicott - No More Newks. Closer to home Mr Ed has Triple JJJ problems with Jana, Jessica and Big Jimmy whilst a media and political frenzy is generated by a dosshouse struggling for ratings . Socialist nightowls are wary of Stationmaster sponsor Paul Mees wanting to shut down late offerings in Bohemia where Welsh Nasal Drawl gets her curls factionalised .

Great to see wins by the Chapels and Understandables last round as it will inspire hope that the run home may stave off relegation . Closer to the top echelons, the Blue Smarties and Clydesdales proved that there is plenty of scope for the Phoenix in September although Single Malts and Purple Hearts will be hard to stop. The Threesomes are also putting together some reasonable A form and the Hestias are looking more comfortable in the B-Cup. No stopping the Triads, Sailors and Artists as the season hots up despite the chill winds of July

It goes without saying that the surname `Bone' is synonymous with the Bulleen Templestowe Amateur Football Club . Many at the club are fondly able to recall the football prowess of the boys on field and have enjoyed the famous Bone wit and charm off it . Their proud association spans over three decades with all four brothers having played . This unwavering commitment has greatly contributed to the success of the club and is a testament to the entire Bone family. In November 2005, Sarah Bone, the boys youngest sister (aged 30 ) , was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour an astrocytoma. Unfortunately, Sarah passed away on June 7 this year. In an effort to support Sarah's husband and two young children and express our appreciation and support to the Bone family generally, a fundraising Auction dinner has been arranged for Saturday July 8 . her proof of the esteem the Bone family is held in the cr nmunity, the dinner for 650 people is a sell out, however donations are still being accepted by those wishing t o

However, Wesibourne's persistence paid off, and in a sterling tribute to "Platter's" 200th match, his teammates in Jucka, Pavez and Smith starred in a game to remember for the great man . Monash broke their travel bug racking up a good win on the road to UHS. With it pretty tight at half time, the Rutherford brothers (particularly John and Nick) along with Leigh Dooley set it up and sent the message that they will certainly have a big say in the make up of the final four. I predicted a close one between the Wickers and Ssvinburne, and also said that if Higgins played, Swinburne would w~t . Both predictions proved correct, and the loss now puts Elsternwick in a precarious position, especially when one considers their massive injury count. This is taking nothing away from the Razorbacks however, who answered every challenge that was presented to them especially when they fell behind by 5 points with 3 minutes remaining . Swans coach Gerard Harrington warned his team not to be complacent against a winless St Marys and his request was answered as his side piled on the goals taking a 45-point lead into the first break. The rout continued for the remainder of the match as Nils, Triple B and Doss went to town setting up a huge match against Bentleigh next week. In what many D3 pundits are predicting to be the Grand Final preview, the two standout teams of the season thus far go head to head in a bid to get a physiological advantage over their rival . The Saints cannot take a trick this season, and it is not going to get better today as they host a Swinburne side with their tales up . Buoyed by their upset win against Eisternwick last week, the Razorbacks will be hoping to consolidate their position and keep breathing down the necks of the "Big Five" by racking up some valuable percentage points. My prediction is a bag for Higgins and plenty of smiles to Swinburne as they keep that glimmer of hope alive with a big win . Kew is officially struggling, and today host a West Brunswick side on the rebound, which does not read well for the club . by Steve McCarthy L Leah Gallaghe r A big thank you to ie n~ , , , -iateur FG -ball Club from asca~ neacia who helped him have a memorable VAFA game last Saturday . "Tearer" was presented with an engraved hip flask (is that something he will really use?) at the after-match - a fantastic gesture . Thanks also to Albert Park and the small group of umpires who celebrated with a beer and a pasta with Tearer late into the night .

Tairn ing Japanese or the second year in a row ump i has travelled overseas to Japan during the Queen's Birthday break to umpire the 6 team Narita Cup in Tokyo along with Box Hill North . Out of the possible 18 games that were played, Tugger umpired 15 of them; he also helped with a football clinic and had 53 people turn up for an umpiring clinic, (which is more than we have for most of our skills nights) . Well done to Peter who paid his own way to do something that he enjoys . A brief description was en up in For the Love of the Game" just recentiy .

bowled over by a couple of players who sent hi m flying and landing on hi . Bloody and battered sbackide with some pretty dee p stop marks on his leg he was able to get to his feet and signal the goal . Obviously in a bit of pain he was able to soldier on and get through the game . Good tough stuff Michael, great to see a young bloke willing to put his body on the line.

Whilst mentioning tough umpires, Simon Stokes (now stop laughing!) toughed it out umpiring a D4 game last weekend after being cut down with a pretty heavy flu that forced him out of action for two rounds . Stokesy crawled out of his sickbed but obviously needed a little help with his breathing due to his clogged head . After applying ample amounts of Vicks Vaporub to his chest before the game he remarked to his umpiring partner (former un-named President) that it really didn't seem to be helping . Maybe the flu has affected his eyesight - he'd actually rubbed Vaseline onto his chest !

And for those out there who like to be a little cryptic, is there any link between the famous 80's song by L~-` ~ - liip & 10 year service The Vapours and Peter's nickname ? Nominations for life membership are required in the

by Ed Sil l A few sides dropping off the finals pace, however the battle for fourth spot looks likely go down to the wire . Fancy the key result of the week was Albert Park's victory away from home . With a big tranche of home games to come, the Falcons might be starting to swoop !

As noted earlier, great win for Albert Park . They got out of the blocks quickly and cruised to a comfortable win over a disappointing North Brunswick . Fehsing contined his fine season for the winners who also had Bennet strarring . NB's best was McLachlan . Memo for myself, don't tip against Power House! With a few key inclusions, the House were able to hold sway over a persistent Syndal . Taylor and Moresi were the House's best whilst Fleming and Fox were the Sinner's best . Bulleen recorded a solid win over Richmond which saw them replace Box Hill North in the four . Some usual suspects in Fradkin (7 goals), Daley and Cookson were the best for Bulleen . The trends are again good for Richmond, with goal scoring becoming easier each week . Nuske with 6 was their best . Hawthorn took on an injury depleted Box Hill North . After an early struggle, the Hawks were able to pull away in the last half to record a solid win . Mundy was unstoppable down back for the Hawks whilst the mercurial one, Dave Pritchard, starred up forward . Plunkett and Currie were the best for BHN . Finally, ten on end was the reality for Eltham as they comfortably defeated a resource starved Eley Park . Good solid win for the Turtles as they get closer to locking down a top two finish . Runco and Foo (same pack drill each week from this two) were excellent whilst Turner managed another 5 up forward . Hard day at the office for the Sharks, however Nelson and Payne were their best . Preview Match of the day status goes to the Power House and Hawthorn clash at Glenferrie Oval . The two teams put on a ,great display of Ammo footy earlier on the year and it is hard to see how this will be any different . Of course, the containing of 'Ed Woods' will be tough, expect an Avery brother to get the job . Really close but learnt my lesson on the House last week, the visitors for mine . Eley Park will be licking their wounds after last week, however an opportunity to atone presents as they tak e 42

on Richmond . The [ Sharks should be good enough to get the points but buyer beware, this will be close! Sharks, but just . Box Hill returns home to face North Brunswick . The injury toll at Box Hill North is high, with their star forwards most impacted . Not crisis levels but this game is simply a must win . I had fancied that North Brunswick might make a late run however last week put paid to that . BHN for me to get their finals aspirations back on track . Another crunch game as Bulleen host Syndal . Four points and a little bit of percentage separates the two at this stage and a loss to Syndal will almost be terminal . Couple of key outs for Bulleen might make it close however home ground advantage plus the motivation of cementing a spot in the four should be enough for Bulleen . Finally, Albert Park welcomes Eltham in YET another crunch game . A loss would probably leave them little finals chance however they couldn't have picked a worst game to try to build some momentum . The Turtles just keep on rolling, picket fences this week with 11 in a row ! Correspondents Don't forget, 0418348723 or ed .sill@locker.com .a u

Three weeks away from finals ladies and gentlemen . . . . You can already see the look in players eyes, as they start to acknowledge that the end is coming, and that it is almost solely up to them to ensure that they get there, in order to play for that glory and everything else that comes with winning a grand final. Again at home down in Elsternwick we have 3 games being played, one first division ch h and two third division games , Oval 1 will host 3~ ki Br ;n Templestowe in second division playing ag inst 11 Kananook 2 which shoul d a be tough encoun ams Mil be eager to knock, each other off the ; . n a vin would place them three games c!e ost ensure them a spot in the finals. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2006

The main event for this weekend will have to be the first division clash between Mazenod 1 and Kananook 1 . Both teams are in fine form and will throw everything they have at one another to ensure that either Kananook remain on top spot, or that Mazenod, can get up there and show the bigger boys that they have what it takes . I might go the underdog, I feel Mazenod have the pace to get round the much sturdier Kananook side

-Ilarat plays host to Lara which should see last s 1st C vision premiers Ballarat come out on top . Pori Colts i take on Broady 1 which should a o prove to be a very tough game as both sides go out to t<' :â‚Ź ' ie points and go forfinal glory in the next coming weeks . The Colters should be too strong for the Kangaroos this w ;â‚Ź' no and put them at 8 for 0 in second division . Bo .,i Ovens and Murray sides are at home and are taking on two teams near the bottom of the ` : ith ;hould walk away with convincing wins an d 1 their places in second and third spot of third division . Maribyrnong and Pt Colts 2 have got the break this week and will hat to rest them sal s with the tough weeks to come .

UNDER 19 (1 ) Round ten down and out quicker than Wayne Rooney's foot was planted into the nether regions of a poor unfortunate Portugal soccer player . C'mon Wayne. The rain held off and a beautifully cold winters' day ensured a magnificent round of under nineteen football . Review No real close ones this weak so I'll start from the top . St Bernard's flexed considerable muscle, bullying Collegians by over 100 large. Josh Ryan and James Viney on fire for the winners with four apiece . Fair win which keeps the lads right in touch of the `f" word . Uni comfortably accounted for Marcellin away . Great win considering its holidays over at the main. Tom Brenta was unstoppable for the winners who proved too big and strong all over the ground . Be La gave Rupo a touch up t reality check, with a thirty point win considered to be one of their best for the year, Josh Oakley snagged five, while James Lamb was voted BOG . In other games Xavs continued their strong form line with an obliteration of BV. St Kevins also put in one of their finest performances to date beating Old Scotch by 7 goals. Ben Liu was a standout for SKOB . Preview Match of the round and possibly Grand Final preview, Xavs host D La . Should be a tight encounter with both forvrard lines tough to break . The winning team may just have the tighter defence, so I'm going to say Xavs . Rupertswood could make amends against Collegians this week . Good teams need to smash the less fancied opponents, so I'm putting this down as a test for Rupo who will win . Quoting the great Patches 0'Houlihan, "If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball" . In other games, Uni will one to find more percentage against By. Marcel in will try to saiaage the season against On Scotch, and St Bernards will comfortably account for SKOBs who are on the improve . The lock worked last week and anyone who foliowec me into Portugal would be extremely happy. This week ; will stick with familiar territory and back the Swans straight out over Adelaide. Any feedback to beatonc@tabcorp.com.au (first bit of feedback on Monday gets a personal mention in next week's edition) . Happy punting! tlfdDt:919 (2 l The Blacks and Sharks have "taken their marks" for the race to the 4. The year's first draw saw Uni and Beauy fight it out in a nail-biter . The Two points to either side will be a help or hindrance come finals. Pritchard and Gregory kicked 3 each for Beauy . Whitetriars caused the upset of the round knocking off Cambersaeil in a 9 point thriller . Big men Torney (4) and P:lirrabella led the Friars home . Unfortunately for the Wallets, they have opened the door to the four and will find it difficult in the coming weeks. Although the Raiders held only a one point advantage at the main break, the Fielders couldn't prevent Parade from running home by 27, with the victors still having strong players to return . A percentage booster for the Panthers in their 241 point abolition of cross-road rivals, Trinity . Typically hard and fast defender Glen Parker, was moved to CHF and dominated, kicking 10, while fr9acReaoyBrown and Wagner were dc ' ant . Leading goal-kicker for the Panthers, h9arshall Bull is r for 't ,areeks with a fractured jaw . Melburn, ans continued n< coal win over me Tonners. This week the Sharks h,, Panthers. The loss of Bulk will hurt Carey but the visitors ;^ai pe in by a coupie . The Tonners play 48

the Blacks who will be looking to go two points better than Iast week, in a close contest . T ~ Fielders take on the GiYVs but won't have nearly enough to stop the likes of O'Shaughnessy and Lawler, OM's likely to chew the Fielders up and spit them out . The T's host the Friars who will be brimming wan confidence and will stretch their winning streak another week . Match of the Round is the Camberwell, Parade shootout . The Wellers are a tough ask at home and will be looking for redemption, but the Raiders will have the goods in a close one . bernecich@netspace.net .a u Uf1DER 19 {3) Review Not too many surprises to come out of Round 10 with many of the results expec-d, and ! ! gap widening b : . :_n ~ top four and the

rest. La Trobe Uni showed they will be pushing hard for that fourth spot after a vain over MHSOB away . A 9 goal to 2 second half by La Trobe put paid to the ooposition with O'Halloran kicking 4 goals in a best afield performance . Second took on third with St . Bede's Mentone having little trouble with Old Ivanhoe in a surprisingly easy win for the home team . Andrews was best for SBMT, as was the ever-reliable pair in Swayn and Neville . Oakleigh demolished Emmaus St . Leo's with Costigan bagging 9 and my man to watch Barrand not letting me down by kicking 8. Bentleigh got out of jail against a determined Old Essendon, with the home team being 1 9 points down at the last break, before coming home with a wet sail and winning by 16 . In a cracking affair at Elsternwick Park, Ajax nearly took the points against Ormond with very little between the two teams all day, however, Ajax relinquished their half time lead to a relieved Ormond . Preview An intriguing Round 11 awaits us all and it will take some tipping brilliance for me to get the 5 in a weekend that sees every team having a realistic chance of winning . In the battle of the cellar dwellers, Emmaus St . Leo's host Ajax in the return bout from round 2 . Ajax had the wood on Emmaus that day, but hasn't won since . yet unfortunately for Emmaus I can see Ajax chalking up their second victory for the season. Ormond at home should beat Bentleigh who have been a tad disappointing lately, while Oakleigh should remain undefeated with a win over Old Ivanhoe . SBMT should have too much class for a rejuvenated La Trobe, however, the Tigers will have to work hard to beat the determined Uni boys who have gelled well of late under Coach De Bono . In a toss of the coin affair, Old Essendon play host to MHSOB in a game which Old Essendon should be confident to take out. MHSOB were challengers a couple of rounds ago but have dropped off, and I think Old Essendon might take it up to them and get their third victory of the season . Please send match info to al_vafa4hotmail .com by 5pm Monday. UNDER 19 BLUE Revie w A couple of upsets in this section may make for interesting reading, but have not made too much of a difference to the shape of the top four . Parkdale Vultures had a surprisingly easy victory over Oakieigh Clayton at home with Horler and Hunter very impressive for the victors . Old Mentonians, who were relaxing with the weekend off, would be delighted with this result for they are now a game and a half clear of Oakleigh . Hampton again played havoc with my tips, however, are starting to show what they are capable of with a good win against De La Salle. Both of these teams have suffered at the hands of senior teams with many stars being pushed up to the higher grade, however, De La have had a couple of hiccups of late and while their supporters keep harping on about how they are the real deal, I have a few concerns . Old Haileyburians increased their already massive percentage with a big win over PowerhouselSth Mornington, while Mazenod had little trouble disposing of Monash . Preview With the likes of Dolman, Johnson, Smitsdorff and Mason all playing good tooth for Old Haileyburians, this team will continue on their merry way with a good win over Monash Blues, who seem to struggle against the powerhouse teams of this section . Old Mentonians will have enjoyed the week off and they should be too strong for Parkdale at home, while De La travels to Oakleigh Clayton in a game they should be certainties for, but for some reason my confidence isn't overflowing for the boys in blue and gold . Tom Kovarik has been a shining light for De La, as have the consistent performances from Breda and Semmel, but they can't do it alone and only a good team effort will see De La take the points, and they should do so at least for this weekend . The rejuvenated Hampton host the rampaging Mazenod, and while Hampton have put two good wins together against very good opposition, Mazenod is a different kettle of fish,

and as a result P,fazenod will burst the boy's from the bayside's bubble . Please send match into to al_vafa@hotmail,com by 5pm Monday . UNDER 19 RED The Dominators get a taste of their own medicine . The top side has suffered its second loss of the year to Aquinas AGAIN . The Aquinians have worked out the Fitzroy Formula, not letting them in until the last quarter when it was too late . Sweeney (3) and Adam Raugauskas were influential for Aquinas in the 11 point win, In the second upset, the Lions knocked off the Xavs by a goal . Jumping the Xavs at the start , Therry held the reigns until early in the last (similar to Aquinas) . Costello (5) and Brennan (3) brought it home while 'MC' Lee kicked 5 for the home side . These two results have burst open possible final four possibilities, for sides like the Bullants who continued their winning ways with a 52 pointer over bottom side Rupo. Tonelli and Marc Carfi booted 4 each, with young Dave Voglis blitzing in the middle. After a week off, Kew got that winning feeling back against lowly Westbourne, but will need more to get back into contention against higher sides . This week sees 3rd vs 4th and both will again fight out a nail biter, but unlike round 2, the inform Aquinians should square the ledger against the Bullants who haven't been tested for a while . Therry will be running strong, but the Reds will be bitter, taking the win and a few heads, to boot . Despair for the loser of this next one . The Woodsmen are facing the Spoon, while a Kew loss would make it very difficult for a finals birth. Kew has more to play for and will take the points away. Old Saints should drive home happy against the Westies in a tight clash over the West Gate. Xavs sleep in , bernecich--etspace .net.au

The unpredictable is now the predictable . We can expect an upset each Round . With five rounds to play, no Section has a settled leading group and with upsets each week, predicting what will happen is fraught with danger. With an 80째!o success rate in Round 10, I am well satisfied . REVIEW Section 1 Old Melburnians had more scoring shots than Old Xaverians but were let down by inaccuracy up forward and so failed by seven points to record victory. Prahran made a mockery of my prediction when they defeated top side, De La Salle by eleven points . Each of these sides should be part of the finals scene . Reigning premiers St Kevin's failed by 58 points against Old Scotch, who now are a game clear in fourth place . Old Xaverians 2 justified my faith, inflicting a 21 point defeat on University Blues . The Blues led by some 18 points at half time but all was not lost for the Xaverians . Veteran Rod . Calhaem, shed his years and in a cameo performance kicked three goals to inspire his younger team mates, whose second half form carried them to victory . Mazenod returned to the wining A with :37 point victory over St Bede's/ Mentone Tigers . zenc- set up their wi n in the opening quarter and althoi 째 aring late in the . Best for St Beale _wernvsioulydagerft s, Mentone Tigers were McCraw, Lomagno, Necker and Foster.

through their 42 point win over Therry Penola. The game, played in ~ :____ blustery conditions wa s hotly contested throughout . Whitefriars were best served by Ben Atkinson in defence, forward, Peter O'Brien and Andrew Spiteri . For Therry Penola, defenders, Toner, Brennan and Sarong were best . Monash Blues found undermanned Marcellin competitive before the Monash depth of talent, overran "The Eagles" to kick eleven goals to nil in the final quarter. This rampage enabled Monash to win by 121 points . Their best included Richard Davies, James Sheldon, Paul Coughlin and Joe D" ter.

F .?roy Reds went further ahead of Old Geelong each G-,er as the Reds built their 48 point winning margin . The Reds had good contributors in veterans Tony Jackson, Nick Auden (who picked up kicks at both ends of the ground) and Dar iel Barr.

.

.. 2 Fitzroy Reds outplayed Old Bi i n mmarians after quarter time, when the home siu pul(;, .. , .v;aay to go on to win by 102 points . The Reds were well served by Gerard Ziemer, Adrian klarcon and Captain Damian Hannam . For Old Brighton, the veterans Gil Norwood and Stuart Cochrane were solid contributors as usual . An undermanned University Blacks proved no match for Mt Lilydale, whose 70 point victory sent the Blacks from fourth to seventh . Best for Mt Lilydale were Nadyn Mayes, Justin Roberts and Daniel Cerra . For the Blacks, Craig Brook, Brett Murphy and Paul Otsuka did well . St Bernard's opened an early lead over Collegians, who were never quite able to assert, authority on the play to wrest control back from St Bernard's who won by 12 points to move to fourth place . They were well served by Deluca, Cox, Cookson (3 goals) and McGlade . Whitefriars set up another challenge for a finals berth 56

. .. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2006

In the Friday night game, Beaumaris defeated La Trobe University by 11 points. A very inaccurate Old Essendon still managed to defeat Old Trinity by 14 points . Trinity led at half time before Old Essendon steadied following another Rush oration, Their inaccuracy kept Trinity in the game before Old Essendon fitness prevailed and brought victory . Best for Old Essendon were Evans, Hughes, Overman and Rush (orator of the week award) . Emmaus! St Leo's put themselves right back into finals contention when they defeated No rth Old Boys! St Patrick's by 27 points . Caulfield Grammarians were largely untroubled to defeat Old Scotch by 62 points . PREVIEW Section 1 Old Xaverians should consolidate top position with a big win over St Bede's! Mentone Tigers . Likewise, Old Scotch should consolidate fourth place with victory over Old Xaverians 2 . 1 expect Prahran to defeat St Kevin's on the field (unlike Round 2) . St Kevin's appear unlikely to recover sufficient ground to atone for their April administrative oversights and so qualify to defend their 2005 premiership victory. I expect Be La Salle to bounce back with a win over the improving Mazenod . Old Melburnians should continue their recent good form with a win over University Blues, who have lost their way over recent weeks. Section 2 A St Bernard's win over Whitefriars would give them a stranglehold on fourth place with four games to play . Victory to Whitefriars could see them in the four with four to play . Despite their unpredictability I select St Bernard's to win at home . Mt Lilydale, who is playing consistently, should be able to win again at the expense of Collegians, who face a long eastern trip for the game . Old Brighton must be given a good chance of victory over University Blacks, given the semester break as well as the home ground advantage . Both were big losers last week so selection is a toss up . At home I select Old Brighton . Fitzroy Reds should continue on their winning way by defeating Marcellin, who are competitive but short of playing options . Monish Blues face their "Long March" north west to Oak Park to meet Therry Penola, who will not have the depth of talent necessary to inflict the first defeat of 2006 on Monash Blues . Section 3 Emmaus! St Leo's should remain well in the race for the four by defeating bottom side Old Scotch at Bennettswood . Old Trinity should again take the points over North Old Boys! St Patrick's, especially on the big Hudson Oval . Old Essendon Grammarians should record another victory by defeating La Trobe University. Victory on a big ground is vital to the Old Essendon psyche as they were overawed at McHale Stadium earlier in the season . Old Geelong, who THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2006

are an enigmatic side, are at home to Beaumaris who need victory to stay in the final's contest . Old Geelong, who were undermanned last week, still showed snippets of fine football . Overall, I favour Beaumaris, despite the ground size . In a battle for second place, Fitzroy Reds visit Caulfield Grammarians . In Round 2, Caulfield won by sixteen points, but since then the Reds have improved greatly. Caulfield stamina is in question rather than their skill level . The Reds play determined football and with Matthew Kelly and Daniel Barr up forward they could kick a winning score . Travis Brockman for Caulfield is capable of kicking a lot of goals if allowed latitude . I predict a close encounter from which Fitzroy Reds will emerge victorious . ash veteran Lu cods played his 1Uin game for against Marcellin last Saturday. Since Luke started with the Whites, he has proven a leader within the team as well as being a talented member of it . He has won multiple Club Best and Fairest awards because of his match winning talents . Congratulations Luke on your achievements . Perhaps your long service will be rewarded with a premiership this season .
