From Stress Relief to Adrenaline Rush When I am having a stressful day, I take a walk and visit the animals that call the Virginia Aquarium home. The graceful seahorses or the schooling jacks always have a calming effect on me. I can also stroll along beautiful Owls Creek and try to catch a glimpse of one of the creek’s resident eagles. My nature treks are like the Japanese practice of Shinrin-yoku, or “forest bathing,” where you go outside and take in the sights and smells of the forest. Many breathe in essential wood oils

Issue Highlights Nature can be exciting too. Beginning in late spring, we’ll have our own forest experience with the opening of The Adventure Park at Virginia Aquarium where Virginia Beach residents and visitors will walk and climb in the forest along Owls Creek. Bringing people close to nature is part of our mission, so partnering with Outdoor Ventures to build the largest aerial adventure course in North America makes sense.

Young and old can walk, climb, and zip in a safe, clean, family-friendly atmosphere year round. Plus, we’re hoping to attract those who might not otherwise be motivated to come and learn about Virginia’s marine

JUNE-SEPTEMBER, 2014 AT VIRGINIA AQUARIUM

From marine debris, giant sculptures with something to say.

It comes from our neighborhoods, streets, shopping centers, businesses, beaches and boats. When we fail to properly dispose of trash, it winds up washed or transported by wind into storm drains and local waterways. The majority of marine debris is composed of plastic trash that will persist for tens if not hundreds of years in the environment – impacting marine habitats and wildlife, and potentially affecting our health.

So, what do we do about this environmental tragedy? Clean-ups like those sponsored in the Owls Creek/Rudee watershed by the Aquarium and other organizations are one way to help reverse damage to the environment – but in a

reactive way. How will we all stop the tragedy at its sources, before trash becomes marine debris?

One creative and innovative group has developed a unique approach to the issue. The Washed Ashore Project: Ocean Awareness Through Art is a non-profit organization based in Oregon and dedicated to bringing attention to the tragedy of marine debris. Their mission is to educate and create awareness about this devastating problem through art. By collecting plastic waste from beaches and repurposing 98% of it into engaging and powerful works of art, Washed Ashore educates people about the problem and inspires them to seek solutions. continued

Artist, educator and founder Angela Haseltine Pozzi will visit Virginia Beach during the exhibit to share her unique story and powerful vision for saving the oceans from marine debris pollution. Pozzi says of her work: “The arts have the power to transform people and their interactions with the world. Instead of drowning in despair about the disappearance of coral reefs, or the pollution in the ocean, I am using what the ocean is throwing back at us to create an artistic response. This project is opening eyes, hearts and minds and is inspiring action. The sculptures are becoming ambassadors of the sea.”

Virginia Aquarium hosts Washed Ashore from June through September, the first time the exhibit has been displayed on the East Coast.

Washed Ashore will bring its unique sea life sculptures, some up to 12 feet tall and more than 20 feet long, to the Aquarium this summer. The exhibit, including a huge seal and sea turtle, giant fish and squid, and even a bleached coral reef, is created entirely from beach-cast debris – tons of it collected from Oregon and other west coast beaches to create the enormous sea life creatures.

Educational signage, hands-on activities and programs inform children and adults about the threats of plastic pollution to sea life and how visitors can contribute to ocean conservation.

Her love for the ocean started it all. ve Ex hi bi ts Ra ch el M et z | Di re ct or of Li What has been the most exciting thing you’ve experienced at the Virginia Aquarium?

My background is primarily in mammals, sea turtles and fish. Large land based reptiles like Komodo dragons are new to me. I was impressed that staff has trained our female dragon to allow voluntary ultrasounds.

How did you get into this line of work? My formative years were spent living on the coast in Charleston, SC. I loved anything that had to do with the marine environment – fishing, boating, surfing, SCUBA diving.

My love for the ocean started it all.

What exactly is animal husbandry? Technically, it is the science of breeding, feeding and caring for animals. An excellent animal husbandry program also provides for animal welfare. Our goal is healthy, comfortable, well-nourished animals that exhibit natural behaviors.

Do you have any plans for some new animals or exhibits? We are in the beginning stages of planning for the new Owls Creek Marsh Pavilion enhancements. We have basically been given a blank slate and are only limited by our imagination and budget. New and exciting exhibits will be headed our way!

Do you have a favorite animal? I have too many favorites!

Fish: burrfish, damsels, oyster toadfish and blennies top the list. Birds: tufted titmice and ravens. Mammals: harbor seals. Reptiles: sea turtles and Malayan leaf frogs.

How much time do you actually get to spend working with animals?

Not as much as I’d like, but the Aquarium’s husbandry staff has been really great about helping me get my weekly “fix” of animal time. Last week I got to feed baby seahorses.

Why do you think aquariums and zoos are important? We play a critical role in connecting humans with the environment. Baba Dioum said, “In the end we will conserve only what we love; we will love only what we understand; and we will understand only what we have been taught.”

What would you tell a young person who wants to work with animals when they grow up? I would tell them to take my father’s advice which is, “You can do anything if you really try!” Study hard, get good grades and volunteer, volunteer, volunteer!

SEA TURTLES IN NEED The Stranding Response team helps turtles suffering in the cold.

COLD-STUNNED TURTLES WHAT IS COLD-STUNNING? The state that turtles enter when they are suddenly exposed to very cold water (below 50°F). They become lethargic and begin to float on the surface of the water.

THE STRANDING RESPONSE TEAM HELPS: Once recovered and taken to the Aquarium’s Marine Animal Care Center (MACC), staff conduct a physical exam, record the turtle’s temperature, respirations and heart rate, collect blood samples and x-rays. The turtles are then warmed up very slowly, over several days, to their normal body

By Leslie Clements and Karen Burns The Sensible Seafood Program’s mission has always been to promote seafood choices that make sense for a healthy marine environment. Now we are discovering new ways to encourage sustainable seafood practices by building on the program that began in 2008.

Thanks to the “go green” movement, many consumers are already aware of the importance of environmental sustainability. Our Sensible Seafood Program’s most important role in “going green” is to change the mindset of consumers, chefs, and suppliers by demonstrating how small choices in the kitchen result in bigger changes for our oceans. We reach out to the local coastal community to make a difference through events at the Aquarium, and beyond, that celebrate sensible seafood and inform chefs and consumers.

We also reach out to local and national sustainability experts who help us define what seafood sustainability means in Virginia. Chef Barton Seaver, Director of the Healthy and Sustainable Food Program at Harvard’s School of Public Health, pioneered unique approaches to sustainability as an executive chef in Washington, D.C. by preparing and serving fresh, local fish not normally found on menus. Last May, as a public speaker during Sensible Seafood Week, Chef Barton reminded us that choosing local fishing and aquaculture operations are a part of a larger fellowship humans have with the ocean.

This year, Timothy Fitzgerald, Senior Policy Specialist, Oceans Program for the Environmental Defense Fund, will kick off our Sensible Seafood Week by bringing his expertise in sustainable fisheries to the Aquarium on May 18th for the Eleanor & Henry Watts Conservation Speaker Series. On Thursday, May 22nd, the Aquarium will host our 5th Annual Sensible Seafood Fest, an event that celebrates sensible seafood by inviting friends and foodies to sample local sustainable seafood dishes provided by select partners.

As we move into spring and summer, we will keep working with over sixty restaurant, business, and community partners to fulfill our mission. We will continue to distribute Sensible Seafood Pocket Guides that make better choices easy, whether at the seafood counter or at a restaurant table.
