Collecting Imagery
Above you can see in blue the areas that the street view car drives from day to day. They travel every route they can get to and the route they cannot there are other methods Google uses. The areas that are not marked in blue are usually not public areas or areas their car / other cameras cannot get to. You can view where google cars are today at maps.google.com/streetview. Google has other methods such as a tricycle with cameras mounted behind them in order to photograph monuments like stone henge. They use snowmobiles with cameras mounted the same way. The
snowmobile is used for heavy snowed terrain. Google has a new method called The Trekker. This is a camera rig on a back pack. This has been used to map the grand canyon. Google’s dolly is used to map indoor spaces such as large museums, hotels and art gallaries. The last form of mapping the world are us. Google Trusted Photographers. Google Business View Privacy
Your privacy and security are important to us. The Google Maps team takes a number of steps to help protect the privacy and anonymity of individuals when images are collected for Street View, including blurring faces and license plates. You can easily contact the Street View team if you see an image that should be protected or if you see a concerning image.
Public access Only
Street View contains imagery from public roads that is no different from what you might see driving or walking down the street. Imagery of this kind is available in a wide variety of formats for cities all around the world. In select cases, Google will partner with an organization such as Disneyland Paris to schedule imagery collection of their property.
Street View images are not real time
Our images show only what our vehicles were able to see on the day that they drove past the location. Afterward, it takes at least a few months to process the collected images before they appear online. This means that images you look at on Street View could be anywhere from a few months to a few years old.

Making Google’s Business View Collecting Imagery
First off we need to actually drive around and photograph the locations to show in Street View. We pay close attention to many factors, including the weather and and the population density of various areas, to determine when and where can collect the best possible imagery.

To match each image to its geographic location on the map, we combine signals from sensors on the car that measure GPS, speed and direction. This helps us reconstruct the car’s exact route, and even tilt and realign images as needed.
Instead of driving around on the streets we take you into businesses and showcase the store. All of the user interface is the same as Google Street View.

To avoid gaps in the panoramas, adjacent cameras take slightly overlapping pictures, and then we “stitch” the photos together into a single 360-degree image. We then apply special image processing algorithms to lessen “seams” and create smooth transitions.
