Welcome Message

from Michael Schaepman, President, UZH
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to Switzerland, to the beautiful city of Zurich and – of course – to the University of Zurich (UZH). We feel honored to host the Una Europa General Assembly for the first time, and we extend our warmest greetings to all of you.
Being part of Una Europa is a privilege, but also an opportunity for us as a Swiss university to strengthen Swiss-European relations in the fields of education and research. We are ready to contribute to shaping the future face of the European Higher Education and Research Area. In this context, the importance of interdisciplinary exchange cannot be emphasized enough. The collaboration within the Una Europa alliance enables us all to harness our expertise to create a dynamic environment where knowledge transcends disciplinary boundaries, fostering synergies that are crucial as we address the ever more complex challenges of our time. The topic of this General Assembly, "One Earth, One Future", under-
scores the value of interdisciplinary approaches as well as the importance of leveraging our alliance to advance research and teaching in fields that are essential to tackling global challenges. I am convinced that by working together on the health of our planet, we will be able to develop sustainable solutions that will ensure a healthier and more prosperous future for all.
Dear participants, I wish you a stimulating and inspiring three days of dialogue, collaboration and discovery at UZH. I am looking forward to meeting many of you in person in the coming days. May this assembly strengthen our relations and inspire new ideas and initiatives that will shape the future of our universities and of Una Europa.
Warm regards,

Welcome Message

from Elisabeth Stark, Vice President, UZH, and Member of the Una Europa Board of Directors
Welcome to the University of Zurich, welcome to the Una Europa General Assembly!
As Director representing UZH in the Board of Una Europa, I am proud and honoured to be hosting such a distinguished gathering of scholars and leaders from institutions that are at the forefront of international research advancement.
The importance of our Una Europa alliance and its collaborative spirit cannot be overstated. At UZH, Una Europa serves as a powerful driver for sustainable internationalisation, opening up a world of opportunities for students, researchers, and staff through successful joint study programmes and mobility schemes.
By emphasising a global perspective, this year’s guiding theme ″One Earth, One Future″ even augments this idea of international collaboration as it reminds us that we share one common
living space and therefore are bound to shape our future together. At the centre of this reflection lies the multidimensional concept of health as a universal concern that transcends borders and disciplines. By underscoring the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, ″One Health″ encapsulates a holistic approach that recognises the interdependence of these domains and fosters interdisciplinary research in critical areas such as zoonotic diseases, antibiotic resistance, and environmental impacts.
″One Health″ is not only one of the six Una Europa focus areas but, since 2019, also a strategic research focus of UZH. In this context, UZH has successfully built and will continue to build inter- and transdisciplinary capabilities to deliver research excellence, for example through the launch of the One Health Institute (OHI) in 2023.
Against this background, the General Assembly offers us a unique opportunity to create a space of exploration and discussion through well-established but also first-of-its-kind formats such as the interdisciplinary workshop with delegates from all Self-Steering Committees. Here and beyond, new ideas can thrive and, together, we can pave the way for future research and teaching initiatives across the alliance.
Thank you very much for your participation and commitment. I look forward to a productive and inspiring General Assembly!
With warm regards,

Join us on Wednesday evening at Restaurant Riithalle for the Una Europa Delegates’ Welcome Dinner Reception. Located in the heart of Zurich, Restaurant Riithalle offers an ideal setting for networking, engaging conversations, and more.
Doors open at 18:30, and we welcome you with an ″apéro″, a Swiss tradition featuring a refreshing drink and a selection of small bites. After introductory remarks from Michael Schaepman, President of UZH, and Dolores O’Riordan, Chair of the Una Europa Board of Directors, and a toast by Elisabeth Stark, Vice President Research at UZH, you are invited to enjoy a variety of (Swiss) dishes in a relaxed atmosphere.

Elisabeth Stark Vice President Research, UZH

The evening will be musically accompanied by the band ″Schäbyschigg″. With clarinets, large and small trumpets, tubas, and accordions, Schäbyschigg’s melodies strike a balance between tradition and innovation. Their music, inspired by the mountainous and hilly landscapes of Switzerland, brings traditional Swiss charm with a modern twist to the Una Europa General Assembly.
Swiss German Mini Dictionary
Apéro
The tradition of the Swiss ″apéro″ originates from the practice of enjoying a relaxed pre-dinner gathering, providing a space for casual conversation. People typically enjoy light snacks such as canapés, cheese, and nuts, accompanied by beverages ranging from wine to soft drinks to suit all tastes.
En Guete
″En Guete!″, a Zurich German (a variation of Swiss German) phrase equivalent to ″bon appétit″ in French or ″enjoy your meal″ in English, is commonly used in Switzerland before starting a meal. The expression embodies the Swiss focus on community, reflecting a moment of gratitude and the beginning of a meal shared with others.

Una Europa General Assembly Plenary Session:
One Earth, One Future
20 June 2024 | 10:30–12:15
KOL-G-201 (Aula), UZH main building
Researchers from Una Europa partner universities, particularly those involved within the SSC One Health, along with other leading One Health experts, will discuss and showcase their work. Through a variety of formats, including input presentations and panel discussions, they will explore the opportunities and challenges in international, interdisciplinary research through the example of One Health literacy to tackle critical global challenges of our time.
The Plenary Session will take place in the renowned ″Aula Magna″ of UZH, where Winston Churchill delivered his seminal speech, ″Let Europe Arise!″ to students on 19 September 1946. In this speech, Churchill proposed what was then an unthinkable idea – reconciliation between France and Germany – as the foundation for a united Europe. This vision jump-started the creation of the Council of Europe, making this venue particularly fitting for a European alliance committed to shaping Universities of the Future together.

Getting to the UZH City Campus
UZH is conveniently located just 10 km south of Zurich Airport, in the city center. The General Assembly will take place in the main building of UZH. Here are various transportation options to help you easily reach the university:
From the airport
Tram: The most straightforward route to the UZH city campus is tram number 10, which takes you directly to the ″Zurich, ETH/Universitätsspital″ stop in about 45 minutes. Trams depart every 15 minutes and tickets cost 7 Swiss Francs. From the tram stop, it is a quick walk to the UZH main building.
Train: For a quicker journey, take the train from Zurich Airport’s underground station to Zurich Hauptbahnhof, the city‘s main train station. The journey takes only 10-15 minutes and costs 7 Swiss Francs, with trains departing frequently — every 5 to 15 minutes. Trains such as the S2, S16, and various InterCity (IC) and InterRegio (IR) services are available. From Zurich Hauptbahnhof, you can either take a short tram ride or enjoy a scenic 20-minute walk to UZH through the historic old town.
Taxi or Uber: Taxis and Ubers are readily available at the airport and provide a direct, though more costly, travel option to UZH. The ride typically takes 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic, with costs ranging from 20 to 40 Swiss Francs.
From Zurich main station
Walk: UZH is a 20-minute walk from the main station. Be aware that the route includes steep and cobbled sections, which may be challenging with luggage. Use the entrance at Rämistrasse 71.
Tram: From Zurich main station, head to the ″Bahnhofplatz″ or ″Central″ tram stations. Take tram line 6 towards ″Zürich Zoo″ or tram line 10 towards ″Zürich Flughafen″ and exit at ″ETH/Universitätsspital.″ Use the entrance at Rämistrasse 71.
Polybahn: Find the red funicular railway at tram station ″Central″. It departs every three minutes. Once you exit the Polybahn, walk past ETH towards UZH, marked by its light blue tower. Use the entrance at Rämistrasse 71. Do not forget to buy a ticket before the ride.
The red funicular, known as "Polybähnli" only takes 100 seconds from Central up to Polyterrasse (Zurich Tourism).

Public transport tickets
Ticket machines are readily available at all stations for immediate ticket purchases. Additionally, you can purchase tickets and access timetables through the Swiss Federal Railway (SBB) website, or through the SBB Mobile app.
If you are planning multiple journeys within Zurich, consider purchasing a 24-hour day pass from any ticket machine, online, or via the app, as it offers unlimited travel and costs the same as two single rides.
