The past few years have been interesting for us all! To be accepted under such difficult circumstances is a phenomenal achievement, during such a challenging time is a huge accomplishment. I would like to say congratulations and hope you have an amazing time even if you are a familiar face or this is your first year... So welcome!

Rebecca Grant Union President 2022/23

This guide is a whistle-stop tour of all the exciting events planned over the coming weeks and all the things we do for you as a Students’ Union. The guide will give you a basic understanding on how we represent your ideas and views to the university, how the union can offer advice and support when things do not quite go to plan, and how we support societies and student groups. These events, whether they be online, or in-person will be a great opportunity to meet new faces and to enjoy ourselves. I hope that this Freshers programme will be an exciting opportunity for us all to reset in order to learn, adapt and keep moving forward through celebrating the new academic year.

My name is Rebecca, and I am your UWS Student President for 2022-23. I am excited for you to experience this years’ Freshers. We have so many great events planned for you over the next couple of weeks and I cannot wait to experience it with you!

Welcome to your 2022 Freshers Guide! Hello!

I will be working on issues that affect our student body at UWS. To provide leadership training to our elected student leaders to further develop their skills. Develop an all-inclusive programme of events that tailor to the diversity of students at UWS. Review our core messages to ensure it is clear what we do for you as YOUR Students’ Union and all students are aware of our services. Engage the university management in ensuring that lectures are recorded and made available to students as is done in some other schools. This will assist students during preparations for coursework and exams. Support the mental health awareness program of UWS by encouraging all UWS students to take advantage of the UWS commitment to rendering support to students with mental health issues. Furthermore, I strongly believe that the welfare of students is key to attaining academic excellence. WHAT WAS THE FUNNIEST THING YOU'VE SEEN RECENTLY ONLINE? I currently follow Viva La Dirt League on Facebook and the funniest video I have recently seen was ‘Awkward Speech at a Funeral.’ Employee Adam has passed on, and Alan, Rowan and Ellie need to come to terms with his death. However, his funeral doesn't quite go as planned. Rowan gives a speech about employee agreement about dying without proper notice. Everyone believed he was joking, but he was legitimately pissed off. Great comedy.

WHAT PETS DID YOU HAVE GROWING UP? I had a pet goldfish and a cat called Bubbles when I was 7 years old.

WHAT’S THE MOST AMAZING NATURAL OCCURRENCE YOU'VE WITNESSED? My husband and I went on a trip to Vienna one winter. I was fortunate to witness the river Danube frozen over to the extent that you could see bubbles frozen in place. I had never seen such a natural occurrence before and hope to do so again. It brought the community together, 100s of people were out communicating, skating, and enjoying themselves. It was wonderful to see.

WHAT TOPIC COULD YOU GIVE A 20-MINUTE PRESENTATION ON WITHOUT ANY PREPARATION? Without prior preparation I can give a presentation or a speech on Blockchain and its applications, with a focus on cryptocurrencies primarily because it has the most use cases and is not so difficult to comprehend unlike other complex applications/use cases.

ARE YOU A CAT OR DOG PERSON OR NEITHER? WHY?

PRIORITIES FOR

Three words to describe me would be creative, ambitious and adventurous. Before recently joining UWS, I strategically led the marketing and branding arm of cryptocurrency/ blockchain based start-up in Nigeria. I have also worked in the B2B tech-sales sector involved in product launches, marketing, and sales for big tech companies such as Microsoft, Samsung and Cisco. @UWSunionVPSD MY TIME OFFICE

I am a bit of both. Though I have nothing against cats, I am a lot more drawn to dogs than cats. Dogs are intelligent, loyal, and funny. From experience, a dog’s unwavering devotion, loyalty and Dogs possess a strong range of emotional intelligence and can read the emotional states of humans and other dogs. Dogs willingly place themselves in danger just to protect their owners and are such great companions. Cats are quite interesting, funny, can take care of themselves and will always be cute like YOU!

I HAVE MY FIRST DEGREE IN COMPUTER SCIENCE, AND I AM CURRENTLY STUDYING ADVANCED COMPUTING AT THE UWS PAISLEY CAMPUS.

The pandemic was a really deeply and widely felt tough experience for everyone; one of the impacts of this experience is how it has caused some form of social inactivity amongst students. There are lot of activities lined up for you to learn in a much more fun way together. I will be presenting you with opportunities which you can take advantage of as well as provide resources and training that will help you maximise opportunities when they present themselves. I can't wait to meet you and see all the beautiful things we can achieve in the coming months as we Dream, Believe, Achieve and Repeat.

WHY SHOULD SOMEONE CONSIDER BECOMING A STUDENT REP? If you are thinking of standing to become a student rep then absolutely go for it! My first year compared to my second year is like night and day. I feel as though I have really had the university experience and gained much more confidence to become part of societies.

STUDENT COUNCIL

SUBMIT OR VOTE ON POLICY IDEAS BY VISITING uwsunion.org.uk/representation/ sauwsstudentsvoice

Student Council is the decision making body of Your Students’ Union. It is the forum for UWS students to share ideas and create policy which shapes the direction of the Students’ Union and the University. Ideas can be about anything that impacts students – from improving student support to free access to drinking water on campus.

Your student rep team are the most important student voice at UWS! As well as your Sabbatical Officers there are three different levels of student rep at UWS: School Officers, Divisional Reps and Course Reps. These students represent students at school, divisional, and course levels. They work together to gather student opinion, share those opinions with staff and work together with staff to find solutions, and then they feedback to students.Reps also have full voting rights on student council! Any student can stand to be a rep –and being part of the team is a great experience which can help you gain new skills and develop existing ones. You will get to meet people from across the University community and beyond, and it’s also a great co-curricular activity to show off to potential employers.

WHAT’S THE FUNNIEST THING YOU’VE SEEN RECENTLY ONLINE? The person who attended court online with the cat filter stuck on!

MORGANDONALD-MONRO

I’m Morgan and have just completed my 2nd year of my psychology degree. I became a Student Rep at the start of my 2nd year, and it was a saviour during the lockdowns as it forced me to speak to loads of people that I wouldn’t normally have spoken to, and it has helped me make some solid friendships. It also gave me a focus for all my energies and passions which in turn helped me gain the Leadership Award which was lovely!

UNION CHAIR

STUDENT REPRESENTATION

The Union Chair is an impartial person elected from the student body for a one year term who supports the running of Student Council and Chairs Council

Elected Student Reps attend Student Council and vote on policy ideas, but any student can submit an idea through Your Union’s website to be discussed and acted upon.

Theymeetings.arealso responsible for helping to hold the elected Sabbatical Officers to account for the work they do, ensuring they are representing your views and opinions effectively.

Hi! I’m the staff member who helps organise our societies and volunteering. I help students set up and develop their societies. I provide training to make sure you know how things work, what you can do and how we can support you. I enjoy getting to learn about all the different interests students have and helping them share these with others. I support our student volunteering team, which includes our Student Buddies and Freshers’ Volunteers.

JAMIE JENNINGS ACCOUNTINGPRESIDENTSOCIETY

I am Jamie Jennings, an Honours year Accounting Student at Lanarkshire campus. I am also the President of the Accounting Society. The Accounting Society holds events with academic and professional benefits (guest speakers, careers fairs, skills seminars, professional bodies links), and various social events. The society provides a platform for accounting students from all year groups to get together and share experiences. Set up in 2021, the society initially held all activities online due to COVID but it now meets regularly face-to-face. We will still continue to use online methods of communication, given the geographic spread of our membership. Our events have been well attended and received and I hope this continues. The Accounting Society recently won Student Group of the Year at the UWS Union’s Big Awards 2022.

Joining a society is a great way to meet new people, help develop key skills way and immerse yourself more into university life. In respect of the Accounting Society students from UWS and partner colleges are more than welcome to join. Each society is run by members, for the benefit of members and as such they can develop the society and the activities to suit their needs. I have thoroughly enjoyed being the President of the Accounting Society and I am very much looking forward to continuing my role into the upcoming academic year. With the wide range of societies at UWS there is something for everyone. In summer 2018 I toured the USA West Coast visiting: San Francisco (including Alcatraz), Yosemite, Death Valley, Las Vegas (including the Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon), Los Angeles, Disneyland and San Diego. I needed a holiday after tha I am studying Chemistry (BSc) and in 2022-2023 I will be doing my last year of the course! My campus is located at Paisley. I am also the president of The Chess Club society, which I started back in February 2021, during lockdown.

The society involves (apart from chess-duh!), interacting with other students from other courses and years, sometimes students from other campuses, which contributes to a nice wee break from studying and also contributes to socialising a bit
