Head Coach Johnny Johnson In his 11 seasons as the head coach of the UW-Stevens Point wrestling program, Johnny Johnson has established a very successful coaching resume. Johnson enters his 12th season as the Pointers’ head coach and 16th year overall in the UW-Stevens Point program in 2009-2010. He has coached 41 wrestlers in the national meet, and boasts a 51-16-1 WIAC dual meet record. Johnson earned his 100th career dual meet victory at UW-Stevens Point on Jan. 3, 2009. Johnson is the second head coach in UWSP history to tally 100 victories and trails only Marty Loy’s 125 career victories for first all-time. Johnson guided six wrestlers to the national meet in 2007 where the Pointers finished 10th. UWStevens Point has finished in the top 11 in the national meet five of the last seven years. The Pointers have also finished in the top three in the WIAC every season during Johnson’s tenure, including an undefeated season in WIAC dual meets in 2003-04. Johnson has coached several successful individuals during his term, including All-Americans Chase DeCleene and Ben Engelland in 2008-09. Overall, Johnson has trained 21 All-Americans, including 18 in the last seven years. He has taken wrestlers to the national meet in every one of his 11 seasons. Additionally, Johnson has had 19 NWCA Scholar All-Americans including Mike Hayes who was the 2006 WIAC Scholar Athlete of the year. Johnson has also trained three national champions. Yan White was a three-time national finalist who won the national title in 2002. Cody Koenig and Brad Marten claimed national titles in 2003, when the Pointers achieved a school record third place finish at the national meet. Johnson also worked closely with 3-time Olympian and 1996 Silver Medalist Dennis Hall. Hall a former UW-Stevens Point assistant coach was joined in the corner by Johnson during the 2004 Olympic trials and on the trip to Athens, Greece. Prior to becoming head coach, Johnson served as the Pointers’ top assistant and the state coach for the Wisconsin Wrestling Federation. Johnson’s strong technical background is the cornerstone to his coaching philosophy. Before coming to UW-Stevens Point, Johnson served as an assistant coach at the University of Minnesota for eight seasons. There he was instrumental in developing 18 All-Americans, 10 Big Ten Champions, and a No. 1 dual team ranking in 1994. Johnson has worked with some of the nation’s top coaches at every level, including Stan Abel at Oklahoma, J. Robinson at Minnesota, and Marty Loy at UW-Stevens Point. Johnson wrestled collegiately at the University of Oklahoma, where he was a twotime Division I All-American for the Sooners while compiling 112-22-2 record. After college, he gained considerable international experience as a member of three U.S. National teams and an alternate to the 1988 U.S. Olympic team. Having completed his Bachelor’s degree in Journalism at Oklahoma and his Master’s in Education at UW-Stevens Point, Johnson teaches Adventure Education in the School of Health, Exercise Science and Athletics at UW-Stevens Point and coordinates Adventure Education minor, which he helped developed for the school of HESA. White is one of two wrestlers in school history to compete in the national championship match three straight years, winning the title in 2001 and finishing runner-up the following two years. Burdick was an All-American in 2005 with a seventh place finish at nationals while posting a 31-10 overall record. He completed his four-year career with an 86-44 overall record. Burdick was the outstanding wrestler at the 2005 WIAC championships after winning the 141-pound conference title. Joel lives in Stevens Point with his wife, Nikki, and son, Zach.

Josh posted a 12 win season his freshman year that ended with a fifth place finish at 165 pounds at the WIAC championships and won the team’s Freshman of the Year award. 2009-10 Weight-by-Weight Preview The 2009-10 season looks to be and exciting year for Pointer wrestling. UWSP comes off a season high 144 points in 200809 and only 2 points away from a WIAC title. The Pointers hope to finish the job and bring the conference title back to Stevens Point as they host the WIAC tournament this year. Many key spots will need to be filled this season, but head coach Johnny Johnson believes he has the strongest group of incoming freshman he has seen in his tenure at UWSP. With the leadership of junior all-American Ben Engelland (184) and seniors Chris Karl (174), Dennis Reckelberg (165), & Bret Oswald (285), Johnson believes several of their freshmen will develop quick enough to contribute right a way. Weight-byweight looks as follows:

149 Pounds Junior Kris Magruder (Racine) returns here with high expectation for the season. Kris accumulated almost 20 wins last season as the starter and finished 3rd at the WIAC tournament. He recorded a huge victory in the UW-L dual against the eventual national champion Matt Mauseth. Kris intends to prove he can wrestle at the national level in 2009-10. Several freshmen will push Kris here for some varsity mat time. Ben Strobel (Neenah) was a 2-time WIAA place-winner finishing 4th his junior year and 3rd last season. He is an aggressive wrestle who loves to compete. Another 2-time finisher at state who will vie for time here is Kory Kleuskens (Freedom). Kory finished 6th & 4th at state and provides a lot of excitement when he wrestles. Tom Jung (Clarendon Hills, IL) an Illinois State qualifier may also see the mat here. Tom could also move to 157 for part of the season.

125 Pounds Sophomore Joe Mileski (Gladstone, MI) returns here after a strong finish in 08-09. Joe earned the starting spot last year as a freshman improving as the season went on and finished 3rd at the WIAC tournament. Jordan Poirier (Bloomer) will also compete at 125 for the Pointers. Poirier, a freshman, is a 2-time WIAA place-winner and 2009 State Champion. Adding depth here second semester will be freshman Jordan Schraufnagel (Mosinee) who finished 3rd in the WIAA state tournament.

157 Pounds Andrew Dilworth, a junior from Greendale, will return as the starter at 157. Dilworth had 13 wins and finished 3rd at the WIAC tournament last year in his first season as a starter. He worked hard this summer with the intention to improve on his conference finish. Adding depth here is freshman Kevin Pardon (Gladstone, MI). The Pointers may also see Tom Jung at this weight part of the season.

133 Pounds Vacated by graduating senior and WIAC Champion Jered Kern, this is a weight class that will be contested by many new faces. Early indications look like freshman Jordan Kust (Shawano). Jordan amassed 134 victories in high school and was an ASICS Junior National folkstyle runner-up as a senior. Pushing Kust for mat time will be freshman Lucas McGann (Baraboo) and transfer freshman Jake Orban (Pickney, MI). McGann also had 130 wins in high school and was a state qualifier his senior year. Orban comes to UWSP by way of Oakland University in Michigan where he competed on their club team. In high school Jake was a team captain and tallied over 100 wins.

141Pounds This is another weight that will need to be filled due to graduation. All-American Chase DeCleene held this spot down for two years so fans will see a change here for the 09-10 season. Again, several freshmen will be vying for the starting role here. Mark Puckhaber (West DePere) leads the way with Shane Sweeney (Madison/Edgewood) and Pat Conrad (Morton Grove, IL) close behind. Puckhaber, a WIAA state runner-up in 2009, shows early promise at this weight class. Right behind him is Shane Sweeney, a state qualifier from Edgewood high school in Madison. Finishing out the competition here is Pat Conrad. Conrad finished his senior season in high school with over 30 wins. 4

165 Pounds WIAC Champion and Outstanding wrestler Jake Wozniak finished his eligibility and moved to the coaching ranks for the Pointers, leaving 165 up for grabs. Senior team captain Dennis Reckelberg (Luxemburg) will make the drop from 174 to try to claim this spot. Reckelberg had 18 wins last year and stepped in for Chris Karl at the end of the season when Chris was not able to compete because of a concussion. Dennis won some key matches for the Pointers and finished a strong third at the WIAC championships. Dennis leadership in 09-10 will be immeasurable. Pushing hard for varsity time here will be freshman Jordan Schulte (Mosinee). Jordan was one of the Pointers top recruits as a 3-time WIAA State place-winner. A two-time state runner-up his junior and senior years, Jordan also placed 5th as a sophomore. He is talented explosive wrestler who could develop into national competitor early in his career. Junior Coulter Nyenhuis (Gladstone, MI) will move up from 157 to battle for this spot as well. Coulter has steadily been one of the Pointers most improved wrestlers year after year. His work ethic and drive to be better will make Coulter a tough competitor. Ryan Conat (New London) will also see quite a bit of mat time at this weight. Another strong worker, Ryan finished his senior year as one of New London’s all time winners.

2009-10 Weight-by-Weight Preview competitor.

174 Pounds Coming off a late season injury, senior team captain Chris Karl (Auburndale) looks to have a strong finish to his career at UWSP. Karl is and explosive wrestler with a lot of athletic ability who is capable of scoring a lot of points fast. He trained hard over the summer and will look to compete strong this season. Backing Chris up at 174 are senior Mike England (Marinette) and freshman Craig Brandvold (Merrill). Mike has been a strong part of the Pointer team now for 4 years and is always willing to do whatever is needed to help the team. Mike provides great leadership for the Pointers both in and out of the wrestling room. Brandvold comes to UWSP with lots of mat time and a strong background in wrestling. Craig is the type of wrestler who will develop to be a tough competitor for the Pointes in the future.

285 Pounds Senior team captain Bret “Oz” Oswald (Antigo) returns at heavyweight for the Pointers. Oz stepped into the lineup for UWSP at the end of the season last year when starting heavyweight Chad Gregory broke his hand. He took full advantage of the opportunity and had a very strong 2nd place finish at the WIAC Championships. Oz also led the team last year in pins with 18. Challenging Oz for the starting role here will be freshman Matt Cuadra from Oshkosh North high school. Matt will join the team a little late as he is also a member of the Pointer football team. Once he is in the room his goal is to get into wrestling condition and push Bret for varsity mat time. Cuadra finished 3rd at the WIAA state tournament last year and shows a lot of potential for the future here at heavyweight.

184 Pounds

Overall the 2009-10 season looks to be an exciting one for the Pointers, but the future of the program looks bright as well. This squad has 17 freshmen and one sophomore striving to put Pointer wrestling into the top echelon of the Division III national scene.

Junior all-American Ben Engelland (Neenah) will return at 184 with his sights set on a national title. Engelland finished his sophomore year with a 28-4 record and 5th at the NCAA tournament. Ben is taking his training to a new level and using his leadership to help guide the young Pointer squad. Ben was also voted a team captain for 2008-09. Mike England will also add support here during part of the year.

Junior all-american Ben Engelland and the Pointers look to improve on their 17th place finish at last year’s NCAA Championships.

197 Pounds Probably the most open weight class for the Pointers, 197 will be contested by several guys. Showing early promise is junior Brandon Jochem (Hustisford). Jochem dedicated his summer to getting better on the mat and the work is beginning to show. A fifth place finisher at state in high school, Brandon has shown he has the skills to compete at a high level in college. Pushing Jochem for varsity time will be sophomore Steve Wozniak (Neillsville) junior Zach Ison (Antigo) and Senior Nick Estep (Racine). Wozniak dropped from heavyweight to give himself a shot at the starting lineup this year. A strong aggressive competitor, Steve could see the mat quite a bit as a starter. Ison could be the most all-around competitor of all the 197 pounders and has great potential here, but he has a history of injuries. Coming into the season Zach had a knee injury, but he hopes to be healthy by the late part of the season to challenge for the starting role. Also vying for a spot here is Nick Estep. Nick has a tireless work ethic and a great desire to be the best he can. Nick’s attitude and drive in the room are great examples for the younger guys on the team. Nick too could see much varsity time in 09-10. Rounding out the field here will be another Wozniak. Freshman Dustin “Duck” Wozniak (Stanley) will also throw his hat in the ring for the starting spot. Dustin is the younger brother of WIAC Champions Jake & Tyler Wozniak. Dustin possesses the same hard-nosed work ethic that Jake and Tyler have and he will surely develop into a very good college 5

“We are proud to honor Coach Roberts through the naming of this facility for his accomplishments, hard work, leadership and outstanding character,” said Athletic Director Frank O’Brien. “What a wonderful opportunity we have to capture the spirit of Pointer wrestling for the past, present and future generations of fans and alumni. We want everyone to feel the sense of pride and tradition we have in Pointer Athletics and the wrestling program and there is no better example than John Roberts for what this facility represents.” The facility renovation and naming in honor of John Roberts is part of a recent successful campaign at UWSP aimed at showcasing the university’s storied tradition in athletics. Fundraising for this project started last fall 2009 and all of the funds from the campaign will be used to showcase the recognition of Coach Roberts, renovation and enhancement of the wrestling practice facility, and wrestling program enhancements. John Roberts served as the founder and head coach at UWSP, then known as Central State College, in the inaugural 1951 season. He also served as the dean of men for the college, started the wrestling program at P.J. Jacobs High School in Stevens Point, and served as the executive director for the WIAA for almost three decades. Johnny Johnson, current Pointer men’s wrestling coach, is excited about the campaign that recently met the initial goal to launch construction which started late last week. “I am very excited about this project on many levels. It will strengthen an already nationally recognized program by improving facilities and increasing exposure” said Johnson. “It has brought out great support from our friends, family and alumni. And most importantly, we are able to recognize an outstanding individual and icon of the wrestling community, John Roberts.”

The Pointers head into the 2009-10 season with six returning starters lead by team captain and All-American Ben Engelland (184). Seniors Dennis Reckelberg, Chris Karl and Bret Oswald will also provide leadership as team captains. One of the biggest goals for the season is to bring the WIAC Championship trophy back home. Having finished just 2 points out of first in 2009, the Pointers are poised to take the next step. However, success jus doesn’t happen. Pointer wrestling is the result of countless individuals working tirelessly on and off the mat, season after season. I’d like to take this opportunity to encourage you to show your support for the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Wrestling Team. The Pointer Takedown Club has played a vital role in bringing the UWSP Wrestling Program to the level it enjoys today. The club not only provides much needed financial support, but it also offers an opportunity for Pointer wrestling fans to come together. In addition, your donation to the Pointer Takedown Club is tax deductible. Funds raised from the Pointer Takedown Club go directly to support the Pointer wrestling program. You can be a part of this important club. Join the team by becoming a Pointer Takedown Club member and help support Pointer Wrestling and its’ family. We look forward to seeing you at our events! Sincerely, Johnny Johnson
