Head Coach Johnny Johnson Head Coach

In his 13 seasons as the head coach of the UW-Stevens Point wrestling program, Johnny Johnson has established a very successful coaching résumé. Johnson is in his 14th season as the Pointers’ head coach and 18th year overall in the UW-Stevens Point program in 201112. This will mark Johnson’s 26th year in the college coaching ranks. He has coached 46 wrestlers in the national meet and boasts a 57-20-1 WIAC dual meet record. Johnson earned his 100th career dual meet victory at UW-Stevens Point on Jan. 3, 2009. In 2011, Johnson passed Marty Loy as the UWSP winningest coach and is only the second head coach in UWSP history to tally more than 100 victories. UW-Stevens Point has finished in the top 11 in the national meet five of the last eight years. The Pointers have also finished in the top three in the WIAC every season during Johnson’s tenure, including an undefeated season in WIAC dual meets in 2003-04. Johnson’s 2011 team also posted an eighth place finish at the NWCA National duals. Johnson has also trained three national champions. Yan White was a three-time national finalist who won the national title in 2002. Cody Koenig and Brad Marten claimed national titles in 2003, when the Pointers achieved a school record thirdplace finish at the national meet. Johnson has coached several successful individuals during his term, including three-time All-American Ben Engelland 2009-11. Overall, Johnson has trained 23 All-Americans, including 20 in the last nine years. He has taken wrestlers to the national meet in every one of his 13 seasons. Johnson guided six wrestlers to the national meet in 2007 where the Pointers finished 10th. Additionally, Johnson has had 24 NWCA Scholar All-Americans, including Mike Hayes who was the 2006 WIAC Scholar Athlete of the year.

Johnson also worked closely with threetime Olympian and 1996 Silver Medalist Dennis Hall. Hall a current UW-Stevens Point assistant coach was joined in the corner by Johnson during the 2004 Olympic Trials and on the trip to Athens, Greece. Prior to becoming head coach, Johnson served as the Pointers’ top assistant and the state coach for the Wisconsin Wrestling Federation. Before coming to UW-Stevens Point, Johnson served as an assistant coach at the University of Minnesota for eight seasons. There he was instrumental in developing 18 All-Americans, 10 Big Ten champions, and a No. 1 dual team ranking in 1994. Johnson was a member of USA Wrestling’s National Coaching Pool and in 1996 served as the head coach of the Junior World Team, taking the team to compete in St. Petersburg, Russia. Johnson wrestled collegiately at the University of Oklahoma, where he was a two-time Division I All-American for the Sooners while compiling 112-22-2 record. After college, he gained considerable international experience as a member of three U.S. National teams and an alternate to the 1988 U.S. Olympic team. Having completed his bachelor’s degree in journalism at Oklahoma and his master’s in education at UW-Stevens Point, Johnson teaches Adventure Education in the School Physical Education & Athletic Training at UW-Stevens Point and coordinates Adventure Education minor, which he helped developed for the school of PEAT. A native of Midwest City, Okla., Johnny and his wife, Julie, have three children – son, Jesse, and daughters, Taylor and Gabrialla. They reside in Plover.

Asst. Coach Jake Wozniak Wozniak is in his first season as the head assistant for the UWSP wrestling program in 2011-12. This is his third year as an assistant overall.

Wozniak was the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) champion at 165 pounds and was named the championship’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.

A four-year letterwinner for the Pointers, Wozniak turned in the most impressive season of his career in his final season at 165 pounds, boasting a 34-6 record on his way to qualifying for his second NCAA Championship.

For his career, Wozniak tallied 78 wins including 20-plus wins his last two seasons. The native of Stanley, Wis., was also a twotime state qualifier in high school, placing third at state his senior year. He posted a career mark of 118-19 at Stanley-Boyd.

Asst. Coach Yan White Yan White is in his eighth season on the coaching staff. White spent six seasons as the team’s head assistant and one year as a student assistant before moving into a part-time role.

Asst. Coach Dennis Hall Dennis Hall, member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and three-time Olympian, returns to the UW-Stevens Point wrestling program for his second stint as assistant coach. Hall is one of the most decorated GrecoRoman wrestlers in U.S. history. In 1995, he became only the second U.S. Greco-Roman wrestler ever to win a World Championship, defeating four former World Champions to claim that title. Hall continued to wrestle to success at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta where he brought home the silver medal. During his competitive years Hall also claimed the World Team Trials Championship seven times (1990, 1993-95, 1997-99) and was a 10-time U.S. National Champion (19922001). Arguably the most recognizable wrestler in Wisconsin, Hall brings a wealth of coaching knowledge from every level of wrestling. He operates his club, World Gold Wrestling, out of the UWSP wrestling room and also provides

one-on-one training in his Stevens Point home to wrestlers of all levels—grade school, high school, college and Olympic. Wrestlers from all over the nation and even the world have travelled to Stevens Point to train with Dennis. Most recently he was asked to travel and coach with the world team in Bulgaria. Hall, who was the head assistant coach at UWSP from 2000-03 and helped the Pointers to a third-place finish at the 2003 NCAA Championships, served as head Greco-Roman coach at the U.S. Olympic Education Center in Michigan in 2009-10. Believing in the development of youth wrestling and dedicated to grow and advance the way wrestling is taught and perceived, Dennis Hall will continue to offer his World Gold Wrestling camps, clinics, clubs and private lessons to the athletes of Central Wisconsin. Hall and his wife Chrissy and have four children: Tyler, Brandon, Jake and Alyssa.

Asst. Coach Joel Burdick Joel Burdick is in his fifth year as an assistant coach for the Pointers. This is his fourth season serving as the team’s recruiting coordinator. A three-time national qualifier, Burdick lends his experience to the middle weight classes. Burdick was an All-American in 2005 with a seventh-place finish at nationals while posting

a 31-10 overall record. He completed his four-year career with an 86-44 overall record. Burdick was the Outstanding Wrestler at the 2005 WIAC Championship after winning the 141 pound conference title. Burdick lives in Stevens Point with his wife, Nikki, and son, Zac.

Asst. Coach Chris Brown Chris Brown is in his fourth season as an assistant coach with the Pointers after finishing his career as a four-year letterwinner for the Pointers in 2008.

For his career, Brown finished with a record of 52-61 over four seasons, posting two 17-win season totals.

Brown tallied 17 victories his senior season and placed second at the WIAC Championship, earning second team all-conference honors.

Asst. Coach Kris Magruder Kris Magruder is in his first season as an assistant coach with the Pointers. A four-time letterwinner with the Pointers, Magruder compiled a 63-55 career mark record with the Pointers, finishing as conference runner-up his senior season at 149 pounds and earned an at-large bid to

nationals. Magruder also finished in third place at the conference championship twice during his four-year career. A native of Racine, Wis., Magruder was a state qualifier as a high school senior and holds the Racine Case High School record for most wins in a season with 38.
