Troy Aikman Troy Aikman is the 2017-2018 United Way of Metropolitan Dallas Campaign Chair. A member of the United Way Foundation of Metropolitan Dallas Board of Directors, Mr. Aikman served alongside Dr. Kenneth Cooper as a founding co-chair of United Way’s Healthy Zone Schools program, and, in 2015, he co-chaired the United Way’s 90th anniversary celebration with Charlotte Jones Anderson. In 2016, the Troy Aikman Foundation committed gifts totaling $1 million to establish United Way of Metropolitan Dallas’ first-ever donor advised fund. Mr. Aikman has managed successful ventures in broadcasting and real estate since his retirement following a 12-year career with the Dallas Cowboys, when he became one of only four quarterbacks to guide his team to victory in three Super Bowls (XXVII, XXVIII and XXX). With play-by-play announcer Joe Buck, he is a game analyst for the NFL on FOX’s No. 1 broadcast team.

Margaret McDermott Margaret McDermott is a civic leader, philanthropist, patron of the arts and educational champion long committed to improving the lives of North Texans. In 1955, she and her late husband Eugene McDermott, co-founder of Texas Instruments, established The McDermott Foundation, which has given millions of dollars in support of educational, cultural, social, and other civic ventures. Mrs. McDermott has received organizations, including honorary membership to the American Institute of Architects, the Linz Award, the Texas Medal of Arts Award and the Santa Rita Award, the highest honor bestowed by the University of Texas Board of Regents. The Margaret McDermott Bridge was named in her honor by the City of Dallas. She celebrated her 103rd birthday in February.

2017 Decades of Distinction Award Recipients

Ruth Sharp Altshuler Ruth Sharp Altshuler is a Dallas icon whose life has embodied the spirit of generosity and caring for more than five decades. In 1986, she founded the United Way Leadership Circle, handwriting more than 100 letters requesting donations and ultimately generating more than $1 million. The Leadership Circle was later renamed the Ruth Sharp Altshuler Tocqueville Society. That same year she became the first woman to chair the United Way annual campaign. Mrs. Altshuler served as honorary chair of the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas’ 90th anniversary celebration, and today serves as a co-chair of the Unite Forever campaign and as a member of Women of Tocqueville. She has received numerous awards and honors in recognition of her volunteer leadership of United Way and other philanthropic organizations.

Margot perot Margot Perot is a graduate of Goucher College, where she was presented with an honorary doctorate in 2014. She taught elementary school for three years. She and her husband, Ross, have lived in Dallas since 1957. They have five children and 16 grandchildren. Mrs. Perot is the immediate past Board chair of the Dallas Museum of Art. She is a life member of the Salvation Army National Advisory Board, and past chair and life member of the Advisory Board of the Dallas County Salvation Army. She was a Founding Member of the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary in Dallas County. Mrs. Perot is a past Board Chair and Life Trustee for The Hockaday School. She is on the Advisory Board of The Perot Museum of Nature and Science, and currently has memberships in the Junior League of Dallas, The Shakespeare Club, and the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary. Mrs. Perot’s history with the United Way goes back to 1987 when she chaired the first dinner for Dallas Tocqueville Society members. In 1991, she was presented with the Alexis de Tocqueville Award.

Ruth Sharp Altshuler Tocqueville Society This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Ruth Sharp Altshuler Tocqueville Society, which recognizes donors with an unsurpassed dedication to the community. Named to honor longtime Dallas philanthropist, the Ruth Sharp Altshuler Tocqueville Society is composed of civic and business leaders whose vision for North Texas is matched only by their generosity. The Society’s 900+ members each contribute $10,000 or more annually to bring hope, provide essential aid, and shape the future of our region. The Women of Tocqueville is an inclusive network of business leaders, entrepreneurs and community leaders within the Ruth Sharp Altshuler Tocqueville Society. Established in 2007, the 139 founding members Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the Women of Tocqueville continues to produce visible impact in Education, Income and Health in North Texas.
