The year 2022 proved to be a challenging year for our organization, but we’ve come out a stronger, more resilient United Way. As we close the book on our second year as Tygart Valley United Way, we are thrilled with the continued progress we see around our region. We are working to make sure every county is represented and receives the services of our United Way.
For the first time in eighty years, we launched our campaign without a campaign chair. Our organization is continuing to find ways to evolve and adapt our workplace campaign to answer the challenges posed by massive changes in the workforce and in society overall. With that in mind and because of the generosity of over 900 donors, we exceeded our campaign goal and raised $628,657. These dollars are more critical than ever and will be put to work immediately for our community.
Our programming continues to make a dramatic impact on the lives of our neighbors, and we are so thankful for our amazing staff and their hard work. Our 211-line provided help and support to nearly 3,000 individuals in the Tygart Valley region, Flipside Afterschool expanded to Taylor County, and VITA helped over 442 individuals and families prepare their taxes.
We are extremely proud of what has been accomplished in 2022, but we know there is much more work to be done. Our community is still rebuilding and recalibrating from COVID-19 and we will be there for every step. Our brightest days are ahead, and we hope you will join us for the work!

EDUCATION
The Flipside Afterschool Program works to improve the academic, social, and emotional
engagement of middle school students in Marion and Taylor counties. By operating sites Monday-Friday from school dismissal until 6:00 pm, Flipside is able to provide a safe, comfortable space to deliver academic enrichment, tutoring, and recreation activities to students. Our program staff and AmeriCorps members work hard to make sure that every child is cared for and encouraged, but sometimes our efforts go farther than we could have imagined.
This year, there was a particular student- we all know them: the one that wouldn’t listen, said disrespectful things to our staff and other students, and refused to participate in planned activities. They were only there because they simply didn’t have anywhere else to go after school. This student would arrive daily to Flipside and sit in the corner of the room, silent, for all 3 hours of the program. But our staff did not give up! Every day, they would encourage him to join. They would sit with him in silence; wherever he was, we would meet him there. And then one day, he joined in. He started doing his homework during tutoring time, he began to speak respectfully to our members and other students. And the progress didn’t just stop at Flipside! School staff also report that he is more engaged in class, prepared, and more polite to his peers.
Flipside has provided this student with a solid emotional foundation and access to a group of adults that are focused solely on encouraging him to be the best he can be, which in turn has helped him flourish academically and socially. We are incredibly proud of this student’s progress, and grateful to our program staff for their success in helping make it happen.

AmeriCorps is a network of local, state, and national service programs that engages over 70,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet community needs in education, environment, public safety, health, and homeland security. Tygart Valley United Way operates the Flipside AmeriCorps program, an education initiative, which leverages 17 members to support the Flipside Afterschool Program.
Our members are from all walks of life, from high school seniors to college students and parents raising their own families. By being a part of our program, AmeriCorps is providing these individuals with real-life classroom experience that will aid them in their future career goals.

FINANCIAL STABILITY
As another tax season comes to a close, Tygart Valley United Way’s
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program continues to grow and expand to meet the needs of our community. Each year, tax law becomes more complex, and the technology needed to prepare a return is ever-changing. The VITA program is intended to take that burden off the individual without the added burden of hundreds of dollars in fees.
TVUW was fortunate to be the recipient of a team of volunteers from AmeriCorps NCCC to assist with the program. The group of 8 traveled to NCWV for six weeks, where they met with taxpayers throughout our five counties to ensure their hard-earned refunds came back to them. With the help from AmeriCorps NCCC and volunteers from Fairmont State, WVU, MVB Bank, and the surrounding community, we were able to provide free tax services to 442 households during the year.
Over $450,000 was brought back to our communities in refunds. These dollars are critical to ensuring individuals have emergency savings, funds to reduce debts, and opportunities to enjoy all the Tygart Valley region has to offer. While the hours put in by volunteers in the VITA program are invaluable, we can estimate this three-month program brings hundreds of thousands of dollars back to our community.

West Virginia 211 aims to help bridge the gap between West Virginians and the numerous social services available to them. 211 helps alleviate stress by providing them with a compassionate ear to empathize with their current situation, a comprehensive database of programmatic solutions, and the peace of mind in knowing that there is somewhere to turn 24/7/365.
With rent, mortgage, and utility assistance making up 60% of statewide needs, the partnership with WV Housing Development Fund's MRAP and Homeowner Rescue Program has been crucial in keeping our neighbors in their homes. Last year, our call specialists made over 111,670 connections for West Virginians.

Making sure students are able to focus on school and able to get
through each day with dignity is the main goal of our United for Kids Collection. Young people can’t focus on school if they are hungry or worried about not being hygenic. Children often don’t have the means to go out and get these items on their own and school is the only place they can ask for these items. Last year, over 40 businesses hosted collections as part of the drive. We were able to triple the amount of donations to each school this year. TVUW provided supplies to all 50 schools throughout our region.
One of our donors for the program shared a story about how this program resonated with her. She lost her mother at any early age. Her teachers made sure she had what she needed throughout the years in school. They would often buy these items themselves and make sure she had enough. As she got older, and was being raised by her dad, one of the teachers called him to let him know what she would need as she matured. She made him a list so he knew exactly what to buy for her. When she saw our list for United for Kids, she noticed many of these items were the same ones she received throughout the years and wanted us to know what a tremendous impact these items have on a child going through those times.
Her story certainly is exactly why this program exists. We want to make sure that every child has the tools to succeed and we want to help remove the burden from individual teachers having to purchase the items themselves.
Nearly 2,700 items were collected this year during our Warm Coats Warm Hearts drive. Every year, our goal is to get the items out to those who need it most right away. We are thankful for the many partners that help to distribute the items. In Elkins, the coats and winter items went off the racks as soon as they were hung up. Coats were hung on racks outside of our office in Fairmont and would find a home almost as quickly as they were put out. We were able to send winter items to a family from Barbour County that lost everything in a house fire.
We may never know the full impact of this drive, but it is possible that some lives have been saved on cold nights. We also think of children waiting on a bus in the mornings and hopefully one of our coats can keep them warm.
