Welcome to the Cardiff Metropolitan University Summer School for Adult Learners 2018 which provides a variety of FREE courses to adult learners from 18th 29th June 2018.

We are delighted that Summer School 2018 is running during The Festival of Learning (previously Adult Learners’ Week) - an annual campaign celebrating and promoting adult learning opportunities.

At Cardiff Metropolitan University we aim to ensure that adults of any background or ethnic group are given a fair and equal opportunity to study in a supported manner. We are committed to ensuring that everyone with the determination, skills and desire to access Higher Education should be able to do so.

We understand how important it is to work closely with local communities to help raise aspirations and encourage people who think higher education is “not for them” to start thinking about the opportunities available. For whatever reason, if in the past, you have felt that a higher education course would not be for you, we have introduced a range of measures designed to make studying here as simple and flexible as possible.

Living in such uncertain economic times, you may be worried about how you are going to develop your skills and reach your potential in such a difficult job market. We understand with all the commitments that come with modern life - work, family, and social-life - it’s not easy juggling all of

these things and considering studying at the same time. You may feel you are not bright enough to study at a University, perhaps you didn’t do well in school and life has taken you away from education.

Often, adults who have been out of study for a long time lack the confidence to return to learning or think people will judge them harshly.

At Cardiff Metropolitan University, we offer a range of free and interesting learning opportunities. Our courses can help you to grow in confidence and help focus your career or learning plan. The Cardiff Met Summer School is a great opportunity to try something new, for fun or to improve your career potential. Trying a Summer School course might just be the start of something exciting, which could open more doors for you through progression onto one of our accredited community courses and ultimately, provide a progression pathway to full-time or part-time study at the University. Summer School is also a great way to get a taste of university life, especially if you are thinking of studying here.

Last year many of the adults who attended the Cardiff Met Summer School went on to enrol on a further course at Cardiff Met in September, many onto Foundation courses or our accredited programmes, and some straight onto degrees. This year that could be you!

Whoever you are we have a course that you will enjoy and feel comfortable studying.

Places on Summer School can go quickly. Please be aware therefore that we do give priority to those Learners living in areas of multiple deprivation and those falling into one of the following categories:

“I attended Willows High School and left with all my GCSE’s at grades B and C. I went straight into a hairdressing apprenticeship and worked towards my level one, two and three NVQ in hairdressing while working in a salon. I have worked in many salons across Cardiff and gained ten years’ experience. For five of those years I was a mobile hairdresser offering my hairdressing services to my regular clientele around Cardiff in the comfort of their own home.

Being unsure about what I really wanted to do was something that always held me back, that is why I attended Cardiff Met’s Summer School where they do taster days.

After this, I applied to do my PCET PGCE. I also think money and giving up work hours to do a course was always a reason for not studying.

Student Finance helped with this.

I started teaching with ACT Training, by putting in my work experience hours and showing them how eager I was to work. As soon as there was a job opening, I applied straight away, and was offered the job and am now working with adults with learning difficulties. I am so happy in my role and really enjoy going to work every day.

I consider myself a hands-on person, rather than academic. I struggled at first, but cannot believe how much I have improved

and I have even shocked myself looking back at my growth. My confidence previously held me back, when I started the course I was too petrified to even stand in front of my own class and read something out. However I now stand in front of groups of adults daily without a second thought. Technology was another struggle, I could not even format my first essay, I spent days trying to change the font and layout to meet standards, but again, my skills have improved massively, and I use technology in my new job daily.

The tutors at Cardiff Met are always available; I could ring my tutors, email them or arrange a chat anytime,they offer great support. My boyfriend is a great emotional support, helping me deal with the stress of juggling everything. He helps me break things down and reminds me when times are tough that I have grown massively and I am half way to my end goal.

My mother in law is also great, she has done this course herself and teaches IT, so she helped me with formatting and using technology I was unfamiliar with.

My advice to new Learners would be don’t be afraid to ask for help, there is always help available. I have made great friends and contacts in Cardiff Met and I gained my job before I even finished the course and I am earning more money.”

No traditional entry qualifications?

If attending our Summer School program gives you an appetite for further study, our Widening Access programme offers further FREE Accredited (10 credit) modules run in the Community which can help you develop a pathway into Cardiff Metropolitan University via the one year Foundation courses. Full details of both our Taster and Accredited courses are available on our website www.cardiffmet.ac.uk/wideningaccess.

These Accredited courses may be suitable for adults who do not have traditional entry qualifications but do have other skills and experiences and provides evidence of recent academic engagement. The Foundation programme is intended to widen access and participation for ‘return to learning’ students developing confidence and competence in acquiring the study skills required to embark upon certain honours degree courses.

Studying one of these courses for a year can really help your confidence grow and improve your skills. On completion you can progress onto one of a range of degree programmes offered at Cardiff Metropolitan University. Although a place cannot be guaranteed, it may be worth contacting our programme leaders to chat through your individual circumstances, they will be able to advise on steps to take to access the course.

BE PART OF THE MADEINROATH FESTIVAL

Be part of the 'Widening Access' arts exhibition taking place during madeinroath's week-long community arts festival. The exhibition is open to all Widening Access art course attendees and will give you the opportunity to experience curating an exhibition and gain knowledge on how to present your artwork in an exhibition environment. There you will be supported by madeinroath's team of organisers, who have a diverse range of backgrounds, knowledge and experiences to draw upon. Only one piece of artwork is required to exhibit and involvement is free of charge. Attend any of the Summer School arts courses to find out more and get involved. www.madeinroath.com

ASSESS YOUR ACADEMIC ENGLISH

These sessions form an exciting opportunity for you to improve your academic skills. Focusing on four essential areas – writing, research, note-taking and time-management – these workshops will be very useful in preparing you for further study, either at college or on one of our accredited Widening Access courses. In the ‘writing’ session, we will look at how you can write clearly and effectively. We will also consider some common writing mistakes and how to avoid them.

If you are interested in studying but English is not your first language, you may have some concerns about accessing learning.

This is a great opportunity for anyone in that position. This course gives you the opportunity to assess your academic English level. You will sit the Password Knowledge test which gives an accurate level of your grammar and vocabulary levels. This will help you if you want to study on the Preparation for Academic IELTS or other similar English language course.

Research is about finding the right information. In this session, we will explore the resources available to do this and the types of sources you might find.

Note-making will show you how writing down information can be turned into a more important part of learning. By thinking carefully about what you’re reading or listening to, you can remember much more about the topic.

Time-management will show you how to organise your commitments and easily keep on top of the demands on your time.

Getting organised means you will be able to tick off each of the tasks on your 'to do' list and feel that sense of satisfaction that you are making progress!

CREATIVE SEWING

ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH

This workshop will explore the different functions and settings of the machine where you will have a chance to sample different seams, hems and darts. We will have a basic look at patterns and measuring for a better fit. We will then use these skills to alter and fit existing clothing or upcycle into something new. The course is aimed at beginners and improvers but all levels are welcome.

Machines will be provided but you can bring your own machine if you wish.

Interested in health and wellbeing?

Curious about how we can influence our natural and built environment to maximise them both? This three day course will introduce you to the five areas of Environmental Health practice: Food Safety, Built Environment, Pollution Control, Health & Safety and Public Health.

This course will explore both the proactive and reactive roles of an environmental health professional and is designed to develop team working and leadership skills alongside the knowledge gained. It is interactive and participant led and provides an excellent introduction to the BSc Environmental Health course.

EVENT PROJECT MANAGEMENT

GETTING STARTED IN JOURNALISM

This course has been designed to introduce students to project management and the areas that need to be covered in order to deliver a successful project, including initiating, monitoring and evaluation. It will be an ideal course for individuals that are involved or hope to be involved in setting up and running projects.

The examples used will be taken from the events industry as successful events need to utilise project management tools.

A two day taster course introducing the craft of writing news articles and feature articles. The course aims to provide a basic understanding of writing in these two journalistic styles. Over the two days we will look at examples of news and feature articles and examine style, content and a 'how to' guide from the ideas phase to writing the article. Students will get the chance to experiment with this style and find their writer’s voice.

The emphasis of the course will be hands on and will use real life scenarios that will give you examples of the many different aspects of the industry. The types of subject area covered will be characteristics of events (size & scope), planning and coordination, risk management, time management and stakeholder engagement. Completion of the course will enable participants to identify key project management requirements and understand the internal and external factors which can impact upon a successful outcome.

HOLISTIC THERAPIES

HOW TO CREATE YOUR ART & DESIGN PORTFOLIO

This introductory course will give an overview of Holistic Therapies in general as well as more specific information on some of the different therapies available and their benefits. You will learn how to carry out a simple Indian head massage routine as a group and also enjoy a basic introduction to Aromatherapy, Holistic Massage and Reflexology. The course will be a mix of basic theory and practical application and is intended to be enjoyable, fun and motivating!

Whether you’re looking to progress onto an Art & Design foundation course, further your studies in the creative field or create a body of work for your own professional practise, this portfolio building session will help you take your skills to the next level.

You will learn a variety of techniques that include page layout ideas, finishing and editing your work.

Bring two or three pieces of work along with you, ideally 2D pieces but 3D pieces are most welcome. It could be an experimental or a final piece or even a sketchbook filled with drawings/paintings that you’d like to showcase in your portfolio. We will work together and get your portfolio started!

During this session you will learn about the wide range of interesting opportunities there are for you within the field of Health and Social Care. You will gain an insight into the laws within Health & Social Care, along with an introduction to communication skills, partnership working and professional practice.

Why can’t we build more housing? What is Welfare Reform? What do the new changes to benefits mean for me?

This course is a great introduction to the Foundation leading to BA/BSc Social Sciences.

This course looks at current issues in housing and how people can become involved in housing in their communities and as a career. Housing is a growing sector which offers a range of rewarding careers, with many different job roles and lots of opportunities.

This course is especially suitable for tenants and residents who want to develop their skills and knowledge, adults thinking about returning to education or a career change, or anyone wishing to develop new skills.

Many opportunities exist within the public, private or voluntary sectors where you can work and volunteer in areas such as housing advice, housing support, homelessness prevention and tenant participation. This short course is a friendly and informal introduction to the BSc(Hons) Housing Studies degree at Cardiff Met. Anyone with an interest in housing and getting involved in their community is welcome to join.

INTRODUCTION TO PREPARING TO TEACH Cardiff Metropolitan University, Llandaff Campus Many adults are returning to learning and with this comes the need for really encouraging and inspirational tutors. This course looks at the skills required by those who feel they could really make a difference in helping others through teaching adults. The session is relaxed, interactive and an enjoyable way of finding out more about a potential new career for yourself. You will discuss the role of the tutor; look at the way in which personal motivation can impact upon learning; identify techniques and methods that promote successful learning; and explore potential progression routes for further study.

So if you want to find out more about teaching adults, this course is for you. It’s a great introduction to the PGCE or PCE PCET which will qualify you to be a teacher in the post 16 education and training sector.

INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY Cardiff Metropolitan University, Llandaff Campus Psychology is a fascinatingly diverse subject that appeals to many people. From the course you will gain an introduction into the study of psychology through consideration of some of the main subject areas such as social behaviour of people; children and their development and understanding the brain to understand behaviour. We will also introduce the types of methods that psychologists use to understand human behaviour.

Each workshop will involve mini-lectures as well as practical activities, to aid an understanding of the research base of psychology.

If you want to go further then why not consider our accredited Level 3 Psychology Module or the Foundation leading to BA/BSc Social Sciences.

This session will provide an introduction to the role that social enterprise can play in the process of community empowerment.

Issues to consider will include the contribution that social enterprise can play in creating local employment that contributes to the development of sustainable communities.

More and more people are keen to make a difference in their communities but lack the knowledge about how best to get involved. This course is designed as an introduction for those who wish to undertake professional training in youth and community work and those who would like to know more about studying in this area. It is ideal for people who care about their community and want to know more, and it is also good for youth or community workers with little previous experience of studying.

We will consider how to identify opportunities and roles and responsibilities.

Examples of social enterprise that Cardiff Met has supported will also be discussed.

This session will allow students to consider progression to a variety of Foundation programmes.

Themes that will be developed within the course include: learning from experience; coping in new surroundings and understanding others.

This course is a great introduction to the 10 credit Youth and Community Education module run in the community.

REFLECTIVE SKILLS ACCREDITED (10 CREDITS) Cardiff Metropolitan University, Llandaff Campus You must have GCSE English & Maths at Grade C or above or an equivalent Level 2 Basic Skills qualification to undertake this course. You must also have enrolled on at least one of the other Summer School courses.

The course is taught over two days in partnership with the University’s Centre for Work Based Learning. You will be assessed via a reflective portfolio which means that you will be expected to keep a reflective log/diary and develop a reflective account based on a learning experience that you have had, for example, reflecting on the other Summer School courses you attend.

The course enables you to develop reflective and academic skills from which you can achieve 10 Higher Education credits at level 3. This can be used for entry onto the Foundation Degree in Applied Professional Practice: www.cardiffmet.ac.uk/FDA, or Foundation Programme: Cardiff School of Management.

Reflection is a technique that helps to reenforce learning that has taken place. It is a very powerful tool for self-development and to improve learning. This course helps you to understand what reflection is and how to use it to develop your personal and professional development, it supports you to be able to write reflectively and gives you techniques to be able to introduce reflective practice into your daily thought processes.

How can we help communities to improve their health? How do we stop a disease outbreak?

This course will explore issues in society through sociology.

This 2 day course will introduce you to the wide and varied subject of Public Health.

The course will look at the three key areas of Public Health. You will be investigating how Public Health is involved in protecting our health, looking at the techniques used to encourage people to live healthier lives and introduced to the how our health is influenced by the world around us.

The course is an excellent introduction to the BSc Public Health course.

It will cover a basic understanding of sociology and develop an overview of sociological theory. It is an ideal introduction to the level 3 accredited module in Sociology which is intended to give a pathway to the Foundation in Social Sciences leading to the degree programme.

STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS

THE TRUTH ABOUT SUGAR

You want to start a business, but what do you do next?

The main aim of this short course is to introduce different types of sugar and look at techniques to reduce and/or replace sugar in food.

This course will give you an insight into the different areas and skills that you need to consider in order to make your idea into a reality.

Topics will include: entrepreneurship, feasibility study, goal setting, start-up support, SWOT and PESTEL analysis and the areas and skills needed to create a business plan.

You will look into the effect of sugar on health and the advantages and disadvantages of using sugar in food.

Students will be introduced to sugar substitutes such as fruits, syrups, vegetables, sweetners and how they can replace or reduce sugar.

The course will be interactive and materials will be provided which will help you to develop your ideas.

What if I haven’t done any study for a long time?

How much will my Widening Access Summer School course cost?

All of our Widening Access Summer School courses are FREE of charge.

Do I need any qualification to attend Summer School?

No qualifications are required to attend Summer school courses other than those attending our accredited Reflective Skills course. To enrol on this course you will need a minimum of GCSE English Language and Maths at Grade C or an equivalent Level 2 qualification.

Where and when are the courses?

All of our courses will start at 10am and finish at 3pm and will be on our Llandaff Campus. For further information and directions on our Llandaff campus please look at our website: www.cardiffmet.ac.uk/llandaff.

Can I book on more than one course?

You may attend more than one course.

However, please refer to our Planner on page 19 to make sure the courses you wish to attend are not running at the same time.

It will not be possible for you to attend more than one course on the same day.

I can only attend one of the days of the course. Can I still come?

Unfortunately you will not be able to attend if you are unable to come on all of the days on which the course is running.

Very often our courses will build on the work done the previous day and it is disruptive to both the tutor and other learners if you can only attend part of the course.

How do I enrol?

You can enrol on your Summer School courses by completing the online Enrolment Form available at www.cardiffmet.ac.uk/summerschool.

What if I have booked but can’t now attend?

Spaces are limited on each of our Summer School courses. If you have booked a space but cannot now attend please let us know. We will often have a waiting list of people wanting to come and by informing us in advance you can no longer attend, this means we can then offer them your place.

Can I park on campus?

Parking space on campus is limited and if it is possible to come via Public Transport this is our preferred option. Cardiff Met operates a pay and display parking system, costing £1 for a half day and £2 for a whole day parking. If you intend parking on campus, you will need to go through the barrier, please press the buzzer at this point and inform reception you are attending a Cardiff Met Summer School course.

Is lunch provided?

No refreshments are provided with our courses. However, some catering facilities are available on-campus.

Where do I come on the first morning?

Please report to the Main reception at the front of campus for the start of the course.

Our student ambassadors will be there to welcome you, get you registered and take you to your class. They are also available to answer any queries you may have regarding your course or facilities on the University.

Do I need to bring anything to the course?

You do not need to bring anything specific for your course. Pens and paper will be provided and your tutor will provide any resources you may need for the course.

If I enjoy attending a Summer School course what can I do next?

All breakages or damage to Cardiff Metropolitan property must be reported at once to a member of staff.

Students may be required to make good the loss of, or damage to, any book, apparatus or equipment in their charge.

Cardiff Metropolitan does not accept responsibility for loss or damage to personal property and in the event of any digital media being handed in as lost property, the University reserves the right to access this device in order to restore the property to its rightful owner.

Cardiff Metropolitan reserves the right to cancel, suspend or modify any programme should circumstances so require.

Cardiff Metropolitan University will only process information about you (your personal data) in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998. You are, at all times, expected to conduct yourself in a reasonable and orderly manner, having due regard to other people and to Cardiff Metropolitan property as outlined in Cardiff Metropolitan's Code of Conduct.

All students are required to enrol either prior to or at the commencement of their programme of study. Enrolment is not complete until:

a Cardiff Metropolitan enrolment has been satisfactorily completed.

•

any other administrative procedures have been satisfied.

Any students who have any outstanding financial commitments to Cardiff Metropolitan will not be allowed to enrol or receive any award from Cardiff Metropolitan.

FURTHER STUDY AT CARDIFF METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY No traditional entry qualifications? Cardiff Metropolitan University run one year Foundation courses which may be suitable for adults who do not have traditional entry qualifications but who do have other skills and experiences.

Studying one of these courses for a year can really help grow your confidence and your skills. On completion of this, you can progress onto one of a range of degree programmes offered at Cardiff Metropolitan University. Although a place cannot be guaranteed, it may be worth contacting our programme leaders to chat through your individual circumstances, they will be able to advise on steps to take to access the course.

RELIGION Cardiff is home to many different cultures and religions.
