Cardiff Met Conferences Keeping you in the Know Welcoming Events back to Cardiff Met After a long 18 months, we are so pleased to start welcoming clients back to Cardiff Met. In July we hosted the Enterprise Troopers National Finals. Although the primary school contestants still

weren’t able to attend in person this year, it was great to see Cazbah, Big Ideas Wales, Buffoon Media, and all the team working together to create such an exciting live streamed event for over 100 primary school children from across Wales.

Being a University focused on diversity and inclusivity it was with pride that in July we welcomed the South Wales Police B.A.M.E. engagement day to Llandaff campus. Thirty delegates attended the day with a brown bag packed lunch served outside on the Atrium patio area.

In October we hosted the Cyber First Girls Development Day at Llandaff Campus.

As this was a slightly larger event hosted at the weekend, the university used it as a pilot event to test the additional Covid protocols that have been put in place to ensure the safety of our students, staff and visitors. The event went really well and the young students that attended enjoyed the chance to spend their day learning in a high-tech university environment.

Since September we have also started welcoming back local children from the Chinese and Polish communities for weekend

classes as well as other new and regular clients using our dedicated conference rooms and hosting evening events at both Cyncoed and Llandaff campus’. We’ve

greatly missed our clients so it’s been wonderful to be once again working with and supporting local businesses and the community.

Cardiff Met receives national award Cardiff Met was excited to be awarded Welsh University of the Year 2021 by The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide.

Professor Cara Aitchison, Vice Chancellor and President of Cardiff Met said:

“The entire Cardiff Met community is absolutely delighted to receive such a widely-recognised national award. This has been a challenging year, but we have performed strongly across the board in the main annual surveys and guides. The award also acknowledges the University’s progress in delivering on its ambitious strategy and associated range of developments over recent years.”

In addition, we are also very proud that Cardiff Met has been shortlisted for University of the Year in the prestigious THE awards.

Developments on Campus We’re so excited to introduce the new Hyb café at Llandaff campus.

The Hyb is situated at the front of the campus and has seating for up to 181 people including booths, individual work stations, lounge seating, café tables, a meeting room and plenty of greenery to add to the ambiance. The café will be open for individual visitors as well as for conference groups.

The Gallery café in the main building at Llandaff campus has also benefited from an extensive refurbishment and complete makeover. There is flexible seating for more than 100 people plus 4 comfortable meeting rooms and an overflow exhibition space.

During the enforced lockdown the university enhanced many of our outside spaces adding more grass and wildflower areas and even a water feature. Some incredible new outdoor spaces have been created giving additional informal space for meeting and socialising when the weather allows or with a nice big jumper on. They gave the university staff the chance to name them and this is what we got!

Looking back over the last year Whilst business has been slow in the event industry the Conference Team have continued to play their part at the University assisting other departments on temporary re-deployment while being on part-time furlough. This included utilising a range of transferable skills to support the Global Engagement Compliance Team with international students, updating the web pages for the Sustainability Team and providing a SelfIsolation Support (SIS) service to residential students.

The University has been unbelievably supportive during the pandemic with health and wellbeing initiatives, programmes, training courses and the No Detriment Policy.

“Helping other departments was challenging and rewarding whilst learning new transferable skills. The SIS team provided a vital link between the students and the university which was invaluable at this time.”

“In such a challenging time, it has been a big relief to have had such outstanding support from Cardiff Met, from my line manager, and the wider team. I’ve been given the flexibility to work from home, to help my son with home-schooling, to participate in training, to play my part in assisting other departments, and have been financially supported throughout.”

Eva commented

Easter 2021, instead of chocolate, all 100+ members of the Commercial Services team received a package of seeds, including sunflowers, tomatoes and strawberries. Staff were encouraged to plant, monitor growth, and share pictures, with some impressive outcomes.

“Throughout the pandemic we have remained united as a team and as always continue to put our clients interests and safety first in all decisions that we make. I’m so proud of the team for their flexibility and positivity over the last 18 months.”
