DR KATIE THIRLAWAY Dean Cardiff School of Sport and Health Sciences Cardiff School of Sport & Health Sciences is a recognised centre of excellence within the United Kingdom. It has established a national and international reputation for the quality of its academic, sporting and professional work.

This tradition has been maintained through the quality of the 100 teaching staff who support our 2000 students in all aspects of their academic and athlete careers. Many of our staff are involved in coaching and advising international sports teams.

The sport degree programmes in the Cardiff School of Sport & Health Sciences are structured to provide distinctive pathways which cater for individual student interests and also serve to meet the vocational requirements of an expanding marketplace in the fields of sport, coaching, dance, fitness and health.

Health and Wellbeing Alongside Sporting Excellence Through a close relationship between the School, Cardiff Met Sport and the Athletic Union, Cardiff Met is able to support students in achieving their aspirations, ranging from their quest for sporting excellence through to their health and wellbeing. All Cardiff Met Students are able to access free Sport and Fitness membership, including a wide range of health and fitness classes as well as access to campus sport facilities to support everyone in meeting their sport, health and wellbeing goals.

Employability The School views the employability of its graduates as one of the central themes that informs the design and delivery of its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. A Placement Office, managed through Student Services, promotes and liaises with the increasing number of private, public and voluntary organisations who currently collaborate with the School. Our aim, in partnership with our students and external partners is to produce ‘work ready students’ who have the knowledge, understanding and skill set to allow them to compete in the competitive employment market.

Our Sports facilities

The teaching and practical facilities for the sport degree programmes are situated on the Cyncoed Campus. The campus is compact, friendly and within easy reach of local shops, Cardiff city centre and road and rail transport links.

There are 520 single study bedrooms on the campus. All rooms have high-speed, unlimited internet access included in halls fees. There are catering and laundry facilities on site.

The Campus is serviced by the university bus service and Cardiff Bus. Students resident at Cyncoed are well placed to take advantage of the extensive sports and recreational facilities located at the campus.

Sport Scholarships and Bursaries Elite Sport Scholar Award The Elite Sport Scholar Award is designed for undergraduate, postgraduate, international students and coaches that excel in sport. The award is based upon a combination of academic merit and sporting achievements and is available to students who meet the criteria set out below.

Cardiff, a true sporting city Principality Stadium - is the biggest undercover sports venue in Europe for rugby, football, motor sports, music and concerts.

Cardiff City Stadium - is home to Cardiff City FC. Sport Wales (SoďŹ a Gardens) - has close links with Cardiff Met providing governance, funding, policy and sports science support to Welsh sport. It provides a venue for Cardiff Met students to join appropriate national squads for training.

Undergraduate Programmes in Sport The undergraduate programmes offer some of the best and most popular sport related courses in the UK. Student Work Placement Opportunities Cardiff Met Open Campus is a collaborative programme that delivers sport, physical activity, outdoor play, health & wellbeing opportunities within the Cardiff City region and beyond.

This unique and sector leading project is aligned with the University curriculum.

This enables us to provide a range of opportunities to our partners both on and off-campus that are linked to students' degree outcomes and academic research. The placement opportunities allow students to work on projects within the community to support physical activity and health outcomes across the Cardiff City region.

The programme enables us to work in partnership with our students in instilling the Cardiff Met EDGE (Ethical, Digital, Global & Entrepreneurial Skills) to help develop conďŹ dence, resilience and experiences that will prepare you for life after university and through to employment. Students are given more responsibility to develop their knowledge, skills and professional identities as they move through their programmes of study. First year students generally work with partners in a structured lesson environment, with academic or other support staff working closely with them during the planning process and directly supervising delivery.

Second year students might be expected to engage in placement opportunities on Campus, where the level of support can be more easily managed. Final year students are more likely to be involved in off-Campus placements where greater emphasis is placed on autonomy and responsibility.
