Welcome to the inaugural edition of The Richards Report! As Dean of the Richards College of Business, it is my pleasure to connect with you through this newsletter, which will serve as a regular update on the remarkable things happening within our college Each quarter, I look forward to sharing the latest news, celebrating the accomplishmentsofourstudents,faculty,andalumni,andkeepingyouinformedofthe excitingeventswehaveplanned

We also gathered for our annual Welcome Back Event to kick off the semester with new and returning students, markingthestartofanotherchapterintheiracademicjourney Oneofthehallmarksofourcollegeisthededicationto bothclassroomandreal-worldexperiences Thiscommitmentwasonfulldisplayasseveralofourstudentsattended theNationalBlackMBAAssociationConferencetonetworkandconnectwithmanyoftheworld’slargestcompanies and participate in the graduate case competition. Innovation and creativity were also spotlighted at our recent InnovationsDay,generouslysponsoredbySouthwire,wherestudentteamsshowcasedtheirtalentsinacompetitive environmentdesignedtoinspirethenextgenerationofbusinessandentrepreneurialleaders

RichardsCollegeofBusinessHosts"Becoming thePack"EventforNewStudents.

On August 12th, the Richards College of Business hosted the "Becoming the Pack" event for new first year students, welcoming them into the Richards College family Dean Johnson and staff greeted students and families in the lobby, where check-in included a fun photo opportunity.

Dr Johnson shared insights on first-year engagement, campus resources, and success tips during the main presentation Guided tours, led by Richards College Ambassadors, showcased the building, including a demonstration in the MIS Lab by Professor Samuel Wolde The event concluded with locally-made ice cream from Butter'dudder and additional activities at the UWG Coliseum, setting an exciting tone for the upcoming semester

On August 28th, the Richards College of Business hosted its annual Welcome Back Social, creating an energetic atmosphere for returning students They enjoyed upbeat music, free merchandise, and information on campus resources, student organizations, and study abroad opportunities The event facilitated connections between students and campus groups, offering a complimentary lunch and engagement with faculty and peers. Overall, the Welcome Back Social fostered community and provided valuable resources, setting a positive tone for the semester

TheLaunchoftheStart-UpBootCamp

The Stone Center is thrilled to announce the launch of its inaugural 10week Startup Boot Camp, which began on August 30 In recent weeks, 16 undergraduate and graduate students from various disciplines, including business analytics, psychology, arts education, and political science, have united to explore entrepreneurial problem-solving These enthusiastic entrepreneurs have been diligently testing their ideas, collaborating, and creating prototypes for their business ventures or social initiatives As we near the finish line, all eyes are set on the WolfDen Pitch Competition on November 14, where participants will present their projects and complete for a chance to win up to $5,000 The energy and creativity displayed by our students have made this journey truly exciting, and we can’t wait to see how their ideas evolve Stay tuned for more updates as we enter this final phase!

NBMBAAConference

The Richards College of Business provided sponsorship for twelve graduate students to attend the Annual Conference of the National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA) This event allowed students to interact with industry leaders, participate in workshops, and explore various career opportunities, all while building connections within a community They also attended the NBMBAA® Career Expo, where they had the chance to interview with over 100 companies such as Google, Ford, and American Express

CaseStudyCompetition

Richards College students also took part in the Case Study Competition at the NBMBAA Conference Team members, Gregory Armwood, Isaac Joseph, Christen Copeland, and Kendal Sparks were guided by Professor Lantz Ferrell, who provided crucial support throughout the journey Their team was named Next Level Consulting, and their presentation centered on creating strategies to engage new African American consumers with the Jeep brand Former competition judge and consulting expert, Philip White, contributed valuable guidance in the team's preparation They competed against 24 other teams, and while they did not secure first place, the experience was a resounding success, serving as an exceptional platform for the team to enhance their business acumen and communication skills with seasoned industry executives

InnovationsDaywithSouthwire

The collaboration with Southwire brought together students from diverse majors for an exciting day of creativity and problem-solving Participants had the opportunity to meet with Southwire representatives, who shared insights on developing useful apps and leveraging technology to solve realworld challenges Students worked in teams, combining their unique skills and ideas to design innovative app concepts By the end of the event, they presented their solutions, showcasing their creativity and collaboration, whether or not they had prior tech experience The day highlighted teamwork, fresh perspectives, and the power of innovation

Congratulations to our first-place winners for their innovation, "Check It"! This app is designed to help you fact-check any text across various platforms, using a color-coded system: green for true, yellow for somewhat true, and red for false.

MarketingClubExploresTheWorldofCocaCola!

On September 23rd, the Marketing Club organized an exciting visit to Coca-Cola's corporate headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia Students had the opportunity to tour the campus and hear from alumni about Coca-Cola's operations and their personal journeys with the company

Alumni Zachary Rogers '99 '05, Scott Digby '07 '09, Keri Musgraves '03, and Braxton O'Neal '98 shared their experiences from UWG, illustrating how their time at the university laid the foundation for their careers at Coca-Cola

Additionally, students were joined by Professor and Marketing Club advisor Kenneth Hilderhoff, Dr Christopher Johnson, Dean of the Richards College of Business, and Mrs Amanda Moore, Executive Director of Alumni & Constituent Engagement

C-SUITEProgram

We are excited to announce the launch of our C-SUITE program! The Richards College C-SUITE Mentorship initiative is designed to support high-achieving business majors with leadership potential by pairing them with industry executives for coaching and career advice This program aims to foster inclusivity in executive positions by utilizing the diverse backgrounds of our student population Welcome to Our New Faculty

EconMini-Conference:

On Friday, September 20th, Salvador Lopez and the Economics Department hosted the second Economics Mini-Conference. New Assistant Professor Erdal Asker presented his work "The Impact of Charter Schools on Housing Values: The Case of Indianapolis " Michael Sinkey presented his joint work with UWG graduate Ethan Freligh, "MLB Hall of Fame Voting Patterns and the Impact of Information Shocks," while Joey Smith discussed a concept of a project tentatively titled "Nuclear Power and Real Estate Values "
