FROM THE DIRECTOR
Most of us have probably wondered why we think and feel the way we do. It’s natural to be curious about how the mind works and what makes us … well … us. Physically, there are chemicals we depend on simply to have the will to go on living. Without serotonin and dopamine in the correct amounts and being sent and received properly, we may find ourselves in dire straits. But is there something more? Poets and philosophers speak of our hearts and our souls. Do those exist somehow beyond organic chemistry?
In Lucy Prebble’s TheEffect, the four characters try to come to grips with how and why they’ve become who they are. They build relationships with one another and struggle to understand their own impulses. We observe an experiment in which Connie and Tristan are examined, tested, and treated like guinea pigs in order to test a new drug.
This production is set in the near future, a time in which we imagine that technology will have advanced, clothing styles will have changed to some degree, and the pharmacological industry will only have grown bigger and more powerful. TheEffectraises questions of who we are and how what we put into our bodies affects the balance of our personalities. If we’re depressed or anxious, should we medicate that away? Or is there vital information about changes we need to make to our lives that we’ll miss if we use medication? There are no easy answers, but I hope this production will help you more fully explore the questions with us.

WHAT IS AN INTIMACY DIRECTOR?
So much of the work we do as theatre practitioners relies on authenticity through deep explorations of characters on emotional, physical, and psychological levels. These risks can and have taken their toll on performers, so the work of Intimacy Directors has become a growing field of study and a steady practice in theatrical productions in recent years to protect actors from being pushed beyond their comfort zones. The responsibility of an Intimacy Director is to create a culture of consent within the stories we tell and how they are being told. Actor safety and being comfortable in doing the rigorous work being tasked to them requires us to see our fellow collaborators holistically and to treat them better than we have done in the past. The role of the Intimacy Director is to give all production participants the tools and the language to set clear, healthy boundaries with everyone they're working with, resulting in a healthier, safer, and more emotionally and mentally secure working environment. We are grateful to our Intimacy Directors for the work they brought to this production and for bringing these tools to our workspaces.

DRAMATURG’S NOTE
How can we be certain of our feelings? Is the intensity of love a fascinating and inexplicable part of the human experience? Or is it nothing more than a dance of chemicals within our brains? The Effectby Lucy Prebble explores this question and more through the story of a drug trial and two strangers with palpable chemistry.
Lucy Prebble has received numerous theatrical awards for writing. TheEffect(2012) won the U.K. Critics’ Circle Theatre Award for Best New Play. The work was also nominated for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize as well as Best New Play by the EveningStandard. Some of Prebble’s other works include the plays TheSugarSyndrome(2003), AVeryExpensivePoison (2019), and the award-winning Enron(2009). Prebble is also a producer on HBO’s hit TV series, Succession.
Our production of TheEffecttakes place in an American clinical research facility. The futuristic laboratory uses high-end technology to monitor every reaction Tristan and Connie might have to an experimental drug. With medical precision, we are tasked to dissect the situation at hand. Are Tristan and Connie truly in love? Or is it simply another side effect of the pill they’re being given? We hope you enjoy this challenging fusion of medicine, drama, and romance. Please enjoy the show! Grace Bedell, Dramaturg - TheEffect.
