CONFERENCE PROGRAMME

WEL COME

Welcome to Bristol. A city of inclusion, social action and great diversity with charity and fundraising at its heart. We hope you take inspiration from the city and its values. Welcome to The National Student Fundraising Conference 2018. TNSFConference #TNSFC18

All information correct at time of print. May be subject to change.

Twelve months ago in Southampton our year changed. We had a new task; to deliver The National Student Fundraising Conference 2018. We wanted to deliver a conference suitable for all and have factored that into every part of our planning. We’ve analysed two years of conference feedback to figure out what people want. In line with our values we want this to be a conference that harnesses the spark of student fundraising and allows everyone to take part of it back to their campuses. We’ve designed this booklet for you to interact with. Have a flick through and think about questions you might ask, who you want to see and what you want to get out of this year’s conference. We want everyone to take something positive away, something that will help see you succeed. Thanks to all the workshop facilitators and speakers, we think we’ve got a great line up this year and we really do appreciate the time and support you give this conference without which, could not take place. And finally a big thank you to our sponsors and charities who without their support, this conference simply, could not be put on.

ACCESSIBILITY

OUR VALUES In our bid we set out how our five values would help us deliver the conference. We’ve factored these values into every part of the planning and implementation of this year’s conference. We’ve given some examples of how we have done this here. We’ve also assigned each Workshop a value. This isn’t necessarily a direct connection but was factored in to the design of the schedule.

10

We wanted to make our conference and schedule fully accessible for all. All dietary requirements have been passed to our catering teams, so if something is not right please do say. There is a quiet space within The Students’ Union building if required. If you have any access requirements at any time, please do speak to the Conference Team who will do their upmost to make things right for you.

CELEBRATION

COLLABORATION

It’s important to celebrate who you are. Don’t continually compare yourself to others. You yourself are individual and success looks different to all. Whilst The National Student Fundraising Awards will celebrate your achievements on a national scale, it’s important to think about the success you have yourself. We tried to make the awards all about you and we look forward to celebrating with you.

We work stronger when we collaborate. We’ve really thought this year about how TNSFC is beneficial for both charities and our partners as SU delegates. Be sure to pop along to the Charities Fair to start those relationships and partnerships with your student fundraising groups. TNSFC simply couldn’t happen without their logistical and financial support.

IMPACT

SUSTAINABILITY

After the conference, we hope you will have a better understanding of your amazing impact. We’ve introduced an impact keynote this year to help you with this. We’ve also tried to get you to think about what you want to take away from the conference and how you are going to do that. If you are unsure of how to, please speak to the Conference Team who will try to give you some guidance on how to maximise your time.

Sustainability is not just trees! It’s social action, financial sustainability and making the world a better place. Just by being here, you’re helping to improve the lives of people on the planet. Collaboratively, as a community, we can all make a difference. We’ve taken this into consideration in every part of planning this year’s conference such as reuseable coffee cups and making the programme recyclable.

“If you haven’t got any charity in your heart, you have the worst kind of heart trouble.”

Bob Hope

BE PROUD

Jessica Wood, Fundraising and Communication Manger, Dig Deep Jessica studied Politics and International Relations at the University of Westminster where she first started volunteering and fundraising by leading and taking part in no less than four overseas challenges. At university she also revived the RAG, becoming RAG Chair and President of the International Development Society; raising awareness and funds for a variety of international and domestic causes. Truly bitten by the fundraising bug, Jessica pursued a career in the Third Sector. After graduating, she joined Dig Deep and managed the challenges programme. In 2015 Jessica moved to East Africa and during her time there volunteered for the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project in Tanzania, developed fundraising partnerships within Dig Deep’s Kenyan team, spent time working for the Foreign & Commonwealth Office in Nairobi and vice-chaired the fundraising committee at the British High Commission. This time in East Africa gave Jessica an insight into the impact that community led and sustainable development can have and the importance of good communication, monitoring and campaigning. Jessica is now the Fundraising and Communications manager at Dig Deep, where she manages all the fundraising efforts for Dig Deep and is responsible for growing and developing Dig Deep’s fundraising streams. Jessica is continually inspired by the student fundraisers that support Dig Deep’s projects; working with the next generation of Third Sector workers who are making a huge impact in global civil society. In her spare time Jessica travels to East Africa, attends her many book clubs and frequents her local!

BE EMPOWERED

Murielle Maupoint, Chief Executive, Hope For Children Murielle studied Psychology at Brunel University before becoming Managing Director of Project 2041, a charity that supports young disadvantaged and homeless people in order to help them fulfil their potential. She transformed the local, failing charity into a national, award winning organisation. Alongside this she founded The Jungle Lodge Company, an adventure travel company that supports and economically empowers local people – launching an eco-lodge deep in the Bolivian rainforest. Alongside transforming Project 2041, Murielle became a Director for the Heathrow City Partnership, which delivered economic regeneration projects local to Heathrow in the run up to and post-opening of Terminal 5. It was after this that Murielle cofounded and became the Director of Encouraging Women in Franchising, which sought to change the face of the franchise sector so that women have a larger presence. Murielle, also in this time, became the Founder and Managing Director of Live It Ventures, a personal empowerment training and coaching company and Live It Publishing through which she founded Britain’s Next Bestseller – a crowdfunding portal for indie authors. In November 2014 Murielle became CEO of Hope for Children where she is proud to lead the amazing Hope for Children Team. Murielle, as demonstrated above, is passionate about people and personal empowerment. She believes that every one of us can achieve great things. Every day Murielle is inspired by the courage and resilience of the people Hope for Children serve across Asia & Africa and by their supporters at home in the UK.

YOUR NASFA COMMITTEE At the first National Student Fundraising Conference (known then as RAG Conference) all the way back in 2011, it was decided that a national student fundraising committee should be formed and so the National Student Fundraising Association (NaSFA) was formed. This year the committee have been focused on reshaping the NaSFA Strategy, introducing the first dedicated Scotland Representative, and creating the Student Fundraising Guide that groups will be able to use as part of their handovers, inductions, and to consult on everything student fundraising such as advice on charity law, running different kinds of events, and making sure that your fundraising total is as successful as it can possibly be. At last year’s NaSFA AGM we launched the National Student Fundraising Total calculator. A standardised calculator of metrics so that we know we’re all calculating our totals in the same way to feed into the national student fundraising total, so that we can celebrate the power of student fundraisers. If you’re interested in sitting on the NaSFA Committee 2018/19, please come and talk to one of us! Details of elections, which will take place at the NaSFA AGM can be found on the next page. We can’t wait to meet you!

NASFA AGM NaSFA AGM and Strategy Workshop Wednesday 22, 14:30, 2X112 This is where you hear from the delegates standing to be on the NaSFA committee, see the bids for next years conference hosts and find more about what NaSFA have been up to.

Represent student fundraising on a national level. Every year at Conference, you elect your new National Student Fundraising Association (NaSFA) committee. Representing student fundraisers is a unique opportunity and whilst it isn’t easy, it is always fun, rewarding, good for your student fundraising knowledge and can lead to exciting opportunities. There are 9 positions available: 1. Chair 2. Training & Partnerships Officer 3. Marketing & Communications Officer 4. South East Officer 5. South West & Wales Officer 6. London Officer 7. Midlands Officer 8. North Officer 9. Scotland Officer For the second year we will be running the NaSFA Committee & RAG Conference host elections online. You will need to nominate yourself through the NaSFA website. Nominations are open to sabbatical officers and students, but not to SU staff or charity staff (sorry!). The full nominations process is online at www.nasfa.org.uk but you can speak to one of the current committee at Conference to find out more.

Launching the Student Fundraising Guide NaSFA, NUS & the Institute of Fundraising have worked hard this year to bring you the first ever Student Fundraising Guide; designed as a starting point for student fundraisers, students’ union staff, officers and charity staff to learn the student fundraising basics and the world of student fundraising. Working with the IoF and with Endsleigh, we’ve provided crucial safety and insurance support, including a new guidance on the principles of being a good student fundraiser. These are based on the Institute’s standards and will stand all student fundraisers in good stead for a career in fundraising. There are printed copies of the Fundraising Guide available at the NaSFA, NUS & IoF stall at the Charities Fair, and it is also available digitally via the NaSFA website.
