Convergences By Sharon Eilon Israel has many holy sites representing many different religions, so it makes sense that it would be a convergence point for a multitude of spiritual beliefs. Throughout history the city of Jerusalem has been considered the navel of the earth, “L‘ombelico del mondo.” Over the years it has evolved into a meeting place for an even larger variety of diverse communities. People of different cultures, races, colors, sexual orientation, and gender identities all come together to form the complex society of my city. Naturally, a country that brings together people from so many different backgrounds is bound to be rife with conflict and division. Indeed, sometimes life here can be tense and intense. People often describe living in Israel as “being inside a pressure cooker.” But strip away the layers of these contrasts, and one will find a single simple truth – we are a shared humanity. In a country filled with differences, it is my wish to highlight our similarities. We all want our children to be happy; we ourselves want to be happy; we all hum our own favorite songs; we laugh when we‘re told a joke, and we cry when we lose the people we love. Our emotions, our wishes, our aspirations are all so intrinsically human, and it is those experiences I hope to shed light on with my photography.

Even though this tightly knit yet complex Israeli society can be tough to navigate, I have a profound appreciation for the challenge of it all. We come from diverse backgrounds, hold a disparity of opinions and beliefs, but we all collide in a meaningful way, creating such a warm and vibrant atmosphere in this relatively small and incredibly beautiful space. When I go out on the streets with my camera I encounter many people who are so wonderful and generous that I feel there‘s a real sense of community here. As a mother, I am genuinely happy that my children get to grow up in such a colorful society. I‘m grateful that they are learning to accept and welcome those who are unlike them with openness and respect. I‘m glad that they will need to make compromises, to be empathetic, and to always look for a middle ground. All of this will make them better human beings, and maybe their generation can find new inroads toward the many problems here that have yet to be solved.

So, in striving to help my children, myself, and everyone else living here, my photos aim to showcase our differences and similarities with respect and compassion, and represent this diversity of people, all of whom have one thing in common – we are intrinsically human and, more notably, we are the Israeli people; warm, colorful, at times loud, and each and every one of us a meaningful piece of this spectacular puzzle I call home.

From

Robert Sherman

editor of Convergences In collaboration with Sharon Eilon I have learned quite a lot. Deciding together the order of her exquisite photographs and the general layout of the piece was an exercise of curative joy and a pure celebration of the artist and her art. And the editing of her succinct and beautiful artist’s statement was a smooth gesture of simply placing the cake she had already baked onto the appropriate gilded platter and making sure not a single frosting swirl was out of place. The rest was all in her voice, one that rings true and clear to her selflessness and generous intent. She is beautifully humble and dignified, and instinctively talented beyond her years in photography, and clearly has only one thing in mind; to share freely of herself through her art.

Her photographs touch me deeply and her words, although I feel the photos speak for themselves, added a perfect thread of continuity for the series as a whole. I genuinely and devotedly hope to work with her again. She is a sparkling gem on the belt of our wonderful group. -Robert Sherman

Babajide O. Olusanya Title: Rose From A Concrete. „Use a Picture It Is Worth A Thousand Words“ Many voices can be heard when we see a photograph and our interpretation is born out of our ability to translate that which meets our eyes and the intent of our hearts. Many will see suffering in a photograph and others will see the perseverance that keeps the subject going through the phase of hardship and great depression. Inspiration lies in every situation why are we forced to look to the negative reflections of our mind‘s beliefs. One who as been a seed buried deep in concrete of hardship knows and can share testimonies of the passion, perseverance, struggles and sacrifices it takes to grow out of the cracks towards the light in pursuit of happiness. I was delighted by Hana‘s Pešková compelling work capturing people’s magic moments in their everyday environments, like rural areas and the lovely village backgrounds. Strong characters in emotive and also amusing stories are caught with creativity and depth. Her black and white documentary style images are really powerful, also in portraying the souls of the subjects.

Hana Pešková My name is Hana Pešková, I am from picturesque town called Český Krumlov in Czech republic. Inspired by Vivien Maier I began to learn the power of street photography. While i traveled the world I started to realize that photography isn’t just about creating memories, but it captures the indescribable energy of the moment and local people. Soon enough my two hobbies, travelling and photography merged together and I “fell in love with” capturing the esence of everyday life at home and in the world.

Bruno Lavi Photography for me is actually a multilayered journey of material and human environmental discovery. As with every journey, I enter into known or unknown areas, sometimes alone, sometimes accompanied but always with the dreamof discovering something else in the realm of creativity. Most of my work is about people and contact. Fiction and Reality, Photographing the theatre of the street. In street photography reality and fiction mix in a complex relationship. When capturing those meaningful unpredictable instants, aesthetically cinematics, a fragment of reality becomes fiction. I get lost in the endless stage of the public space, in the mystery of people‘s life, involuntary performers, great characters out of time in evocative narrative situations. Candid people living their ordinary everyday life from which the extraordinary arises spontaneously. People with unconventional looks, product of what they want to project to the world. If we add the photographer‘s personal interpretation of the frame, creating his own surreal reality, what finally gets the viewer are meaningful, believable and seductive street fiction shots. Scavengers It is at the end of the day that the dump resembles a post-apocalyptic scenario. The atmosphere is heavy, almost palpable, interspersed with the living flames of the fires spewing toxic fumes that mix with the warm evening air. It is the time of the scavengers. The leftover food has already been disputed during the day with the animals, who are beginning to leave the place. Now there remain pieces of metal and glass that the fires manage to expose amidst the amalgam of burnt debris, the last hope at the end of another day at the dump.

Robert Cressy Please do promote my work from within FB. I don‘t have a website as such but may set one up. Some blurb on me might be „I am a photographer in the Magnum tradition, working chiefly in B&W. My Street photography started in the early 80s and is influenced by other photographers (Kertesz, Cartier-Bresson etc.) but also by the history of Western painting. I am largely self-taught but did a one week course with Magnum photographer David Hurn in 1986.

Roberto Rampinelli Title: A LOOK OUTSIDE THE NEW YORK JUNGLE I‘m not a professional photographer, but I have loved photography since I was a child. The common thread that units my shots is the humanity of people: in work, in sport, in art, in religion, but also in the simplest moments of everyday life when men and women become „human beings“ facebook.com/roberto.rampinelli.3 | instagram.com/rampinelliroberto/
