Clean water for millions

With an ever-growing older population, we’re working with a range of experts from industry, charities, and health and social care staff to improve the quality of life in old age. Our internationallyrenowned Bristol Robotics Lab is working on the development of intelligent technologies that can help older people stay independent for longer.

Our researchers have developed a portable mobile water treatment system capable of delivering clean drinking water anywhere. The system has been developed for use in remote or undeveloped areas of the world to provide clean water for disaster relief and humanitarian emergencies. New ways to learn The new £50 million Business and Law building is due to be completed by January 2017, and includes social and learning spaces, allowing students, staff and professionals to work together more closely and make interesting new connections.

Pervasive Media Studio UWE Bristol’s partnership with Watershed is a cornerstone of our City Campus. Located within Watershed’s landmark harbourside building, the Pervasive Media Studio is at the heart of our partnership, and hosts a network of over 100 artists, creative companies, technologists and academics exploring experience design and creative technology.

You will then be able to complete the application form, upload copies of certificates, academic transcripts and references, and submit it electronically.

Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) and LLM in Advanced Legal Practice (inc LPC) Applications for the full-time GDL and LLM in Advanced Legal Practice are made through the Central Applications Board (CAB) and are available online at www.lawcabs.ac.uk or from: Central Applications Board, Ground Floor, Suite 2, River House, Broadford Business Park, Shalford, Surrey GU4 8EP. Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) Applications for the full-time and the part-time BPTC must be made via the central online applications system www.barsas.com. First round applications open in mid- October of the year before entry and close in mid-January.

Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) Applications must be made through UCAS Teacher Training (UTT) at: www.ucas.com/ucas/teachertraining/apply-and-track. On receipt of your application, the University will consider whether you will be invited for interview. If shortlisted, you will receive an invitation to interview by UWE Bristol. You will be notified of the outcome of your application by UTT. Successful applicants must provide a satisfactory Declaration of Health and a further declaration of criminal convictions (Disclosure and Barring Service clearance) before taking up their place. Competence in the use of English language and evidence of this may be required at interview.

Professional and short courses The application process for professional and short courses can vary according to the course. Your application will be considered by a member of staff from the department in which you will be studying.

Criminal convictions If you have a criminal conviction, you must declare it on your application form. The University may ask you to provide further details of the nature of the conviction. We will not be able to proceed with considering your application until this information has been provided. Immigration –Visa If you require a visa to study in the UK, you will need to apply for a General Student Visa under Tier 4 of the Points Based System (PBS) immigration system. To apply for a visa under Tier 4, you must have an unconditional offer of a place to study and be issued a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from an institution, which holds a sponsor licence, as your visa will be linked to this institution. UWE Bristol has been approved as a Tier 4 sponsor.

Your visa application will be assessed and awarded points based on your offer of a place to study at your ‘sponsor’ institution and financial evidence showing that you are able to fund your studies and living costs in the UK. Some postgraduate taught courses and some research programmes of longer than six months may require Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) clearance. If you are studying a course which does require ATAS clearance, we will send you a separate letter to allow you to complete the online application form.

If you do require ATAS clearance, you will need to submit your ATAS certificate with your visa application.

We advise that you allow at least four weeks between applying for your ATAS certificate and making your visa application.

Under the new system UWE Bristol is responsible for ensuring that you are undertaking your studies while you are in the UK and we are required to inform the UKVI if you do not arrive for the start of your course, withdraw from your course, defer or suspend your studies, or if you do not attend for significant periods of time.

Entry requirements We keep our entry requirements as straightforward as possible and explain below our standard entry requirements. You will see any course-specific entry requirements within each course listing.

Standard entry requirements • Normally a first degree minimum 2:2 or above from a UK institution, or a degree of comparable standard from an institution outside the UK, unless otherwise stated in the course listing.

• Applicants who can demonstrate relevant work or industry experience and their potential to benefit from the course will also be considered.

• The University may be able to recognise successful previous study through Accredited Learning (AL), or assess and award credit through Accredited Experiential Learning (AEL) for knowledge and skills gained in accordance with the University’s Academic Regulations. Please contact us if you think you are eligible to be considered for AL or AEL. • All applicants for postgraduate study need to demonstrate good general education, which includes acceptable levels of literacy and numeracy, normally equivalent to at least grade C at GCSE in English and Mathematics.

Accredited Learning (AL) Accredited Experiential Learning (AEL) Successful previous study may be recognised by the University as accredited learning (AL); or knowledge and skills gained in the workplace may be assessed by the University and awarded credit as accredited experiential learning (AEL) in accordance with the University’s Academic regulations covering AL and AEL. Credit recognised (AL) or awarded (AEL) may be counted towards the credit total needed for the award for which you register. Please contact us if you think you are eligible to be considered for AL/AEL.

Alumni Alumni are former students of the University.

Award Within UWE Bristol, you may come across a course being referred to as an award. Strictly speaking, the award (ie a degree) is the qualification you get on completion of your course. Sometimes, courses are also called programmes.

Block release Block release attendance involves occasional full-time attendance for days, or weeks, during a programme of study.

Intermitting

Certificate of Acceptance to Study, needed by international students when applying for a visa.

Intermitting is an interruption to your study. If you are unable to continue studying, you may ask permission to intermit and resume your studies at a later date. You do not lose any credit already gained.

Conversion Course A vocational postgraduate qualification usually taken by graduates wanting to change subject areas after their first degree.

Day release Day release attendance involves full-time attendance one day a week during term-time.

European Credit Transfer Scheme (ECTS) The credit you achieve at UWE Bristol may also be rated in accordance with the ECTS and recorded using the ECTS conversion method by the University.

120 University credits equate to 60 ECTS credits.

First degree This is another name for an undergraduate degree.

Interim award If you are unable to complete the course for which you originally registered, you may be eligible to receive an interim award. For example, a Masters degree includes provision for a PGCert or a PGDip interim award depending on the credit achieved.

MA A Master of Arts is a postgraduate academic or creative Masters degree.

MFA A Master of Fine Arts is a postgraduate academic or creative Masters degree.

MRes Masters in Research is a postgraduate academic Masters degree, the main element of which is an extended research project.

MSc A Master of Science is a postgraduate academic Masters degree.

MPhil A Master of Philosophy is an advanced postgraduate research degree.

Modular programme Most of our postgraduate courses are divided into modules.

Module A module is a unit of study which is assessed and for which credit is awarded.

Modules are of different sizes and have different credit values and levels.

PG Cert A Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) may be awarded upon successful completion of 60 credits as specified for the course of study and in accordance with the University’s Academic Regulations.

PG Dip A Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) may be awarded upon successful completion of 120 credits as specified for the course of study and in accordance with the University’s Academic Regulations.

PhD A doctorate qualification, usually based on at least three years graduate study and a dissertation.

Placement A period of approved work-based learning or study in a host organization or institution approved by the University for this purpose as defined in the requirements of a specific award.

Programme A programme is a degree scheme which leads to a UWE Bristol award.

Car parking is by permit on all campuses.

Local transport We work closely with local bus companies and the Students’ Union to provide the best possible public transport services to our campuses. All new students are given information on bus routes, timetables and student discount tickets. The express bus service takes 15 minutes from Frenchay Campus to the city centre.

We have great cycle facilities at UWE Bristol, including a bicycle loan scheme for students. There is also a network of cycle paths across Bristol, which means our campuses are easily accessed by bike.
