A WARM WELCOME FROM
Welcome to our 2022 Annual Review. I found myself moving into the role of Chair at the end of 2021 when Matthew Gold decided to step down after doing so much to help set the scene for a stronger, brighter GB National Committee Thank you, Matthew. And thanks to all who have helped bring UWCGB forward to where it is now, especially Anna Moses, Emma Franck Gwinnell and Mueez Abdur Rahman who are stepping down as Trustees at this AGM With some incredibly hard and dedicated work across all of our various teams we have begun to see a much stronger, more grown up National Committee take shape before our own eyes It really has felt like we are building a sturdy new ship which after the turmoils of Covid feels like it will not just set sail, but will proudly plough through the stormiest of seas! We have worked incredibly hard on our culture, inclusivity, our processes and our governance as well as re building our structure around our own UWCGB mission, vision and values. All are published in our first three year strategy which we launch at this year’s AGM. I am amazed at what a small group of very hands on Trustees have been able to deliver, with the support of some brilliantly dedicated volunteers. Many get a mention in the full text below so I will only mention our Trustees and staff members here as they should be better known amongst the UWC community. Having said that, every single person who has given time to UWCGB this year should be extremely proud of what they have achieved It’s time to sit back and reflect on just how much UWCGB has been moved forwards by all of your efforts. Thank you! THE CHAIR

The Membership Engagement team, led by Gareth Williams, myself and our second staff member, Isobel Clymer, has launched UWCGB’s first National Committee membership scheme and enabled nearly 200 of you to become UWCGB members in our first year. Our Fundraising team, led by myself and Isobel, has, with significant support from a great group of parents and alumni, created the first ever UWCGB funded scholarship and selected our first UWCGB funded student who will attend UWC Atlantic College this year. In addition to this and in many ways most importantly Anna Moses, our ever present Governance & Strategy lead and process perfectionist, with the support of Tegan Evans, who is managing to combine a PhD with being UWCGB’s Secretary, have helped us shape UWCGB’s first 3 year strategy They have also kept us focused on managing the present better and keeping an eye on the future, too.
"THESE HEADLINES SPEAK
Our Health & Wellbeing team, headed up by Perveez Mody and Trisha Gorman have helped students and families buffeted by the Covid storm and more. They have just managed to pull off one of the best Orientation sessions ever for both the Zero Years and Year 1 students who missed the opportunity last years. All this has been enabled by our Volunteer Coordination team, led by the extraordinarily dedicated Emma Franck Gwinnell She has helped us find and on board more great volunteers than ever and they have been brilliant in bringing all these initiatives to life We have a Data Protection and IT team, led by Mueez Abdur Rahman, which means that for the first time we have a core function helping us manage our data and ensuring we have the best IT to help us fulfil our purposes. The Finance team, led by Gareth Williams, has ensured that we have weathered the Covid storm well We are as sound financially as we ever have been. We have more to do to build our income to support the professionalisation of the NC, but we have the right systems in place and are moving forwards.
Our Selections team, led by Hannah Mahapatra and Chris Jones, superbly supported by our first ever staff member, Kinga Skomra, have managed to place more than 50 students in 16 of the 18 UWCs this year 20 of them will be going to UWC Atlantic College meaning that, for the first time in a long time, there is a really strong and diverse group of British students selected through UWCGB heading to our home UWC FOR THEMSELVES"
We have a growing Promotions team, under the leadership of Andrew Morris and Tabea Leiss, who are promoting UWC to potential students and their parents through TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and school visits too They are also supporting applicants to learn more about UWC and build their confidence to apply through our regular Zoom in on UWC sessions. They are even taking the time to sit back, evaluate and learn better ways of doing things

As a result, UWCGB really is making exciting progress. As mentioned earlier, some of our Trustees will be stepping down this year We thank Anna, Emma and Mueez for all they have done for UWCGB. Some of them will stay on as volunteers, but we are looking for new Trustees to replace them and to continue the work they do to support the wider UWC community. If you are interested in joining us as a Trustee to help take UWCGB forward do please contact hugh@uwcgb.org, or our Secretary, Tegan, at secretary@uwcgb org We’d love to have a discussion. The work that has been done on strategy, governance and process in 2021 and 2022 will make this a much more pleasant and purposeful organisation to join It will also give us a much greater chance of evolving into the type of UWC National Committee we believe will best help us to serve the UWC community in GB Most of all, the effective implementation of our strategy will help us to better than ever find and fund the next group of exciting young people to benefit from a UWC education and make their impact on this small and highly interconnected planet. THANK YOU ALL FOR EVERYTHING YOU DO FOR UWC! Here’s to an even better 2022/23!

Running an NC, particularly one that sends as many students as UWCGB does, is hard work The NC in GB would not exist without the volunteers who undertake many tasks within the various teams We always need help to spread the UWC ideals and we welcome and encourage parents and graduates from whatever generation to get involved as volunteers and members of UWCGB
Great Britain (GB) had the founder United World College (UWC) and, from 1962 until the early 2000s, UWC Atlantic College selected British students to attend UWCs all around the world As an increasing number of National Committees (NCs) were set up to select students, a group of UWC graduates felt that there should be an NC in GB. From the early 2000s, this group of graduates worked with UWC Atlantic College to select British students UWC Great Britain (UWCGB) was set up as an independent NC in 2004. UWCGB is a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee We are responsible for selecting students and preparing them and their families for their UWC journey. We also play a role in supporting students while they are at UWC and seek to keep them and other UWC alumni engaged in the UWC movement in GB once they graduate UWCGB has a Board of Trustees numbering around 11, who oversee the NC’s governance and strategy as well as being company directors and being responsible for the proper running of the charity They are all volunteers who are either graduates of a UWC or parents of UWC graduates and are elected by the membership of the charity at an AGM. In addition, we have an executive leadership team, also comprised of volunteers, which directs the various activities and volunteer teams of the NC
This Annual Review outlines the activities of the Committee over the past year, including introducing our Trustees, core teams, and the activities we’ve undertaken to Strengthen UWCGB We are also thankful to Alis Jones (UWC Li Po Chun ’17) and Matthew Lam (Promotions Volunteer, UWC Red Cross Nordic ’20) for their reflections about their time at UWC and volunteering with the NC.

Selected by the Austrian NC, Tabea graduated from UWC Red Cross Nordic in 2020. Upon moving to London in the same year, she was keen to give back to the UWC community and jumped onboard as a UWCGB Promotions volunteer A few months later, Tabea started working as UWCGB’s Social Media Coordinator and has since managed and expanded its social media platforms, built a committed team of student volunteers, helped plan several events and coordinated the Promotions team’s volunteers

UWCGB’s operating accounts for the past financial year show a positive and reasonably healthy growth thanks to an increase in income from application fees and the first income from our new membership scheme As a result, our General Operations Fund has grown by just over £3,600 during the year. Expenses were reduced by maintaining most of our meetings online. Separately, there has been a surge in support for our UWCGB Scholarship Fund which now stands at £23,800 With matched funding from UWC Atlantic College, we have this year been able to nominate our first UWCGB Scholar to our home college in Wales We now need to raise in excess of £40,000 this year to fund the second year of this first scholarship, and to ensure we can select and fund a second student to attend UWC in 2023 The continued assistance in the form of grants from UWC Atlantic College and the UWC International Office (UWCIO) is helping to fund our Promotions and Membership Engagement & Fundraising activity respectively. The grant from UWCIO is a two year grant, which will reduce in 2022 23, then cease, by which time we aim to be able to self fund our Membership Engagement activity from our recurring membership income.

Whilst we continue to assess the impact which COVID 19 has had on UWCGB’s finances and activities, with the return of in person events and an increase in NC activities, it is absolutely essential we continue to find ways to support our volunteer teams with paid administrative personnel, in addition to encouraging further contributions to our scholarship fund. We will be looking at ways we can support this from current and future income streams. A big thanks goes to Anna Moses for her help and direction in supporting our growing Finance team, and I would like to welcome and thank new volunteers Farah and Abi for their involvement and guidance We look forward to continuing to find ways to develop and grow the financial security and stability of our NC, in addition to supporting a growing UWCGB scholarship fund If you have experience in finance and want to get involved, we encourage you to get in touch and join our team!

15 CORE FUNCTIONS PROMOTIONS SELECTIONS HEALTH& WELLBEING MEMBERSHIP ENGAGEMENT FUNDRAISING
UWCGB is organised around five core teams: Promotions, Selections, Health & Wellbeing, Membership Engagement and Fundraising. Our teams are groups of volunteers who come together throughout the year to ensure that we are finding the best and most diverse group of UWC applicants, selecting them appropriately, supporting them while at a school or college, and then building our membership engagement and fundraising work. Every NC volunteer is part of a team or another group that pushes forward the NC’s work overall and we’re excited to share updates about our work over the last year!
CORE CFUNCTIONS ORE FUNCTIONS of UWC Great Britain
Our volunteer teams are at the very core of what we do as UWCGB. If you’re interested in any of these areas, please get in touch. Otherwise, we are very excited to share with you updates from our teams about our work over the last year!

Promotions
Team
During the past twelve months, the Promotions team has continued to go from strength to strength New personnel, along with established regulars, have found increased zest in their core task of spreading the UWC message. Our overall aim has remained to increase both the diversity and number of applicants that UWCGB receives This has been achieved largely through an even greater presence online, especially social media and an increased number of webinars
16
Despite the uncertainty of a worldwide pandemic, a close bond with other UWCGB teams, especially Selections, has led to some impressive results. Indeed, it was encouraging to note a percentage increase in final applicants of 50 4% compared to 2021 None of these achievements would have taken place without an unbelievably enthusiastic and accomplished team: Andrew P Morris (Co opted Trustee, Promotions and parent of UWC Pearson alum), Hannah Runacres (Promotions Lead UWC SEA alum), Tabea Leiss (Social Media Coordinator and UWC Red Cross Nordic alum), Matthew Lam (Data/TikTok Coordinator and UWC Red Cross Nordic alum), Josh Morgan (TikTok Lead and UWC Thailand alum), Marlene Leiss (Webinar Lead and UWC Mostar alum), Amalie Ausland Bjerkely (Webinar Lead and UWC Red Cross Nordic alum), Adarsha Aryal (UWC Dilijan alum) and Layo Esther Olayiwola (UWC Pearson alum). Possibly the most positive result of lockdown from the Promotions team’s point of view has been our ‘Zoom in on UWC’ webinars. These have, again, proved hugely popular with potential applicants, their families and volunteers alike. Last year saw a carousel of events delivered in three blocks of four one hour webinars, along with extra sessions as the application deadline approached in October.

SOCIAL MEDIA
All aspects of UWCGB’s social media have been masterminded by Tabea, more than ably assisted by Matthew who has overseen the TikTok branch of the team We have recently surpassed 2500 followers on TikTok and maintained a monthly growth rate of around 1 5 3% A large proportion of our webinar attendees have found out about us through TikTok and Instagram (40% Instagram, 18% TikTok), which demonstrates the increasing value of social media to UWCGB as a whole. Over the past few months, our social media efforts have been supported by some of our current UWC students, who have creatively shared their individual experiences over Instagram and TikTok. This collaborative process has enabled the promotions team to build better relationships with current students and to pass on various skills, i.e. project management, leadership, and volunteer engagement In conjunction with UWCIO, schools h identified in the East Midlands region amenable to hosting UWCGB worksh in person and online during the autumn It will be amazing to finally get the op to visit schools again after a barren c years As part of our outreach pro many of the team will be appearing w UWCGB volunteers at the Independent Show in London in November Orientation ‘22, Matthew ran a focus gr our new UWC students, to understa content they look for and address so points in our social media production pipeline. Insights are currently being analysed and actionable results and recommendations for next steps are expected in the coming months.

THIS YEAR IN SELECTIONS When we made the decision to move our Selections process online in the autumn of 2020, few of us felt that this would be more than a one year hiatus from the norm. After all, COVID was going to be a 2020 phenomenon It is one thing to be a pioneer and have the novelty of being involved in a new process, but it is quite another to commit to this screen time a second time. We are incredibly grateful for our wonderful volunteers that came back for the second year of selecting young people online, and for those fantastic people that joined us for the first time For the second year running, our candidates have completed community conversations prior to applying and facilitating these conversations has given more volunteers a gateway into helping our Selections team. he past year has also been a time for reconnecting and extending our relationships across the UWC movement This time has broadened the opportunities we are able to apply for young people that apply through our NC cohort of over 20 young people heading to UWC Atlantic College including our first fully funded NC scholar Equally impressive is the fact that we will be represented at a greater number of colleges this year. British representatives return to UWC Robert Bosch in Germany, UWC Maastricht in the Netherlands and UWC Thailand for the first time in a number of years In addition, we have young people going to study at UWC East Africa in Tanzania and UWC ISAK in Japan for the first time It is exciting to consider that we have places at a record number of colleges 16 of the 18 United World Colleges this year As well as college applications, we have been successful in gaining places for our young people at a number of exciting UWC Short Courses both at home and further afield. As we look to increase the number of applicants applying to attend a UWC through UWCGB, ▶ This year we have over 50 young people who will be representing GB across the world Fittingly, as they celebrate their 60th anniversary, we have a larger

we have opened our new cycle of applications much earlier than usual. At the time of writing, there are many young people starting their applications, completing their community conversations or signing up to attend a webinar to find out more about UWC. For our new cycle, we will take the best parts of our learning and the opportunities from the last two years, and make use of the continued support from Atlantic College We will continue to conduct our panel interviews online and benefit from the expertise of the skilled volunteers we have across the globe Our group assessments will return to Atlantic College, giving candidates a mini UWC experience in person and a chance for us to better understand their potential as future representatives of our NC There will also be the option for the group assessment to be completed online, if candidates are unable to travel to Atlantic College If you would be interested in supporting our work, please do reach out to us via the Volunteer Coordination team at volunteering@uwcgb.org. Thank you for your continued support, The Selections Team

& Wellbeing

The Health and Wellbeing Team 22 TEAM OVERVIEW
The role of this team is to support students and their families, from initial contact with UWCGB, through nomination and attendance at UWC colleges around the world, and increasingly afterwards We do this in several ways:
working closely with the Selections team throughout their cycle stages and helping to provide information sessions for parents; planning online and in person Orientation activities to prepare families for their UWC journey; hosting periodic town hall and information sessions for current families, often with a social element; in 2021 we helped host regional in person picnics for new and current families; encouraging networking among all our families to build a caring community; acting as a friendly face and sounding board for individual families as issues arise, and liaising with schools where necessary; and integrating into our activities those students and families from the Global Selection Programme with links to GB. After two full academic cycles online, and our first hybrid year culminating in a fantastic weekend of Orientation and bonding with our newest students in the Peak District, we are working towards keeping the best of both worlds We are increasingly taking advantage of the flexibility this offers us by, e.g., offering Orientation sessions on Zoom in more bite sized, digestible chunks which are timely, accessible, affordable, with no travel carbon footprints for our remote or globally-based families. We have also established lively WhatsApp groups which allow parents to assist each other directly with up to date information sharing. An important objective of all we do is to help foster a more interactive community of families who will continue to support each other and the work of UWCGB emotionally, practically and financially both now and in the longer term We thank all our patient, hard working UWCGB staff and volunteers, past, present and future!

23
Membership Engagement
The past year has seen a step change in our approach to membership engagement In spite of being one of the NCs with the most alumni residing in our geography, this country has not really had a fully functioning alumni association before What a wasted opportunity for parties, for mission focused activities, for networking and to continue to build the relevance and influence of UWC here in Britain! If we are to continue to build the number of scholarships available for British students of all backgrounds to attend UWC, we must bring together more alumni, parents and friends more effectively to campaign for and to help raise funds to enable these great opportunities. We also believe a membership scheme will enable alumni and friends to help fund the work of UWCGB And guess what, it’s beginning to happen! In 2021, we launched our UWCGB membership scheme We now have nearly 200 members, over 50 of whom are contributing financially. With your help, we must grow this significantly if we are to cover the long term costs of UWCGB’s staff members, who carry out so much essential work for the Committee We have a process in place and it is beginning to work. We are producing regular membership newsletters, and have organised 11 events in five

cities Cardiff, Edinburgh, London, Oxford and Manchester attended by over 300 members, alumni, parents and friends of UWC. Please take a look at our membership scheme here, and think about becoming a member if you aren’t already Members can vote at our AGM and will receive a copy of our regular members newsletter In addition, members will receive direct invites to all UWCGB events as well as events in GB organised by the UWCIO and UWC Atlantic College
The opportunities created by a more structured paid membership team are significant We are already receiving over £2,000 annually in membership income from just 55 paying members On that basis, if we can boost our paid membership to 500, we will be more than covering all of our membership scheme costs, and well on the way to expanding UWCGB’s capacity to fundraise for more scholarships. We have started, and we must grow We are now intending to move toward a membership 24 model whereby members will receive free entry to UWCGB’s events, while non members must pay a small amount to attend. This will gently introduce the idea of our UWC community paying it forward and helping to fund UWCGB’s work. It will make our events and socials more sustainable, as well as generating more membership income. This is a practice already well developed in other parts of the world, and one which it makes sense to introduce here given we have such a large community wanting

Fundraising
In 2020, in the heat of the COVID 19 pandemic, we launched our first fundraising campaign to support British students attending UWCs. We raised £10,000. In 2021, we managed to more than double the amount raised Thanks to the hard work and contributions from over 70 parents and alumni living in the UK, we have raised over £21,000. From launch, our aim has been to develop and sustain at least one fully funded scholarship to a UWC each year for a young person who could never have dreamed of applying to UWC without a full scholarship We have built a dedicated fundraising team with the considerable support of UWC parents Matthew Gold, John Creaton, David Levy, Wayne McCardle and Richard Middleton, as well as alumni including Karina Dostolova and Neil Fenton. This has all been supported by our Membership Engagement and Fundraising Coordinator, Isobel Clymer We are delighted to announce that the first recipient of a UWCGB funded scholarship will be starting at UWC Atlantic College in 2022 Thanks to matched funding from UWC Atlantic College, we have been able to offer a full open scholarship to a wonderful young lady from London who would most certainly not have been able to benefit from a UWC education without this opportunity.
25 Oxford Event 2022

Our 2022 campaign is already well underway and as always WE NEED YOUR HELP! We have a fundraising dinner coming up in Oxford in September, and another in London in October. Do please contact isobel@uwcgb.org or hugh@uwcgb.org if you are interested in joining these events or helping us organise them. We still have a way to go to achieve our 2022 target of £40,000 so please do all you can to help us by donating to our 2022 fundraising campaign here. This is a significant, but much needed undertaking for any NC. UWCGB is a long, long way behind most of the other larger NCs when it comes to fundraising for scholarships to fund young people from our own country to attend UWCs We have, for too long, been in the shadow of UWC Atlantic College and we would like to thank Andrea Diez de Sollano (Director of Philanthropy, Engagement and Partnerships at UWC Atlantic College) and Naheed Bardai (Principal at UWC Atlantic College), who have been extremely generous in offering us guidance and support to develop our own fundraising programme We have also been greatly assisted by UWC International’s NC Development Team, led by Kaya Karam and Andrew Mahlstedt We'd love to connect with you! The Governance & Strategy (G&S) Team was formed in 2021 with the primary responsibility of advising UWCGB on good governance practices Currently, our team consists of two core members: Tegan Evans and Carter Cheng, and two advisory members: Emma FranckGwinnell and Anna Moses We are incredibly grateful and fortunate to be supported by such passionate people. We’ve been supported this year by three interns: Tivona Yeung, Saahir Nazar and Shreya Reddy, who have each completed a fixed term project with UWCGB. Tivona Yeung has been hard at work creating Terms of Reference for each Team, to ensure that roles, responsibilities and activities are clearly understood and defined across the Charity The second project was updating our Articles of Association, which will be approved by our Members at our 2022 Annual General Meeting This work was delivered by Saahir Nazar, and supported by Emma Franck-Gwinnell.
Finally, Shreya Reddy has taken over the review of UWCGB’s internal operating policies thank you to Shreya for this invaluable work!
In addition to these projects, the G&S team has had a number of diverse work streams this year A major focus has been supporting UWCGB’s strategy development, resulting in the UWCGB Strategy 2022 2025 This will be put to our members for a non binding vote of approval at UWCGB’s 2022 Annual General Meeting In addition, we are excited to be coordinating the 2022 Annual Report, and delivering the 2022 Annual General Meeting in collaboration with our Membership Engagement team.

Volunteer Coordination 29 CLICKHERE CLICKHERE TOVIEWAND TOVIEWAND SUBSCRIBE! SUBSCRIBE!
In 2021, UWCGB identified a need for a central person or team to be responsible for developing and managing a consistent recruitment and onboarding process for new volunteers. From this, the Volunteer Coordination team was born, formed in January 2022 to work with all of UWCGB’s teams (and the Board of Trustees) to help identify and fill volunteer gaps, and to ensure that our volunteers have a good time volunteering with us. Our first order of business was to review and update our existing recruitment and onboarding procedures, adding a Volunteer Onboarding Session for new volunteers and employing a new method of volunteer recruitment: direct outreach via LinkedIn. Following this procedural refresh, we created detailed step by step instructions for recruiting and onboarding new volunteers, to enable new members of the team to get up to speed quickly. Next, to enable volunteers to learn more about other volunteers and what other UWCGB teams have been up to, we launched a new quarterly volunteer newsletter the first edition was published in April.

In June 2022, we organised and hosted a social event for UWCGB volunteers in London. A group of volunteers from various teams went to the Serpentine Gallery in Hyde Park to see some beautiful art, eat ice cream and meet new people Stay tuned for details of our next volunteer event, to take place in Q4 of this year! Finally, the volunteer coordination team had an away day, hosted by Emma at her flat! In the session, we discussed UWCGB’s 2022-2025 strategy and how this would feed into our volunteer coordination strategy, and brainstormed new ideas for volunteer recruitment, onboarding, retention and engagement. Of course, we also made and ate pizza, and enjoyed some homemade Norwegian ‘skoleboller’ (“school buns”) And, of course, in addition to all of the above, the team has been carrying out work to “keep the wheels turning”, recruiting and onboarding over 25 wonderful new volunteers, running a volunteer satisfaction survey, attending relevant training sessions and UWCGB is very grateful to all the volunteers who have given up their time to help the Volunteer Coordination team: Agnieszka Ziemba, Anna Moses, Cartman Tai, Ellika Benn, Emma Davis, Gwendolyn Tan, Hazel Law and Sophia Wei. We’d like to give a very special thanks to Anna, who was co-lead of the volunteer coordination team until May 2022, and whose experience has been absolutely invaluable to UWCGB. As UWCGB grows, so must our volunteer coordination team! We are currently looking for three new members of the team to help us recruit and onboard new volunteers and engage our existing volunteers please get in touch with the at volunteering@uwcgb org if this is something you’d be interested in.

Data Protection & IT NEW MEMBERSHIP ENGAGEMENT PLATFORM
While the membership platform launched last year with the essential features, volunteers are still working to complete a smooth transition from our current database of members to White Fuse a task that sits squarely between data protection and IT. An important aspect of this was reclaiming the previous UWCGB website’s uwcgb org domain and redirecting the membership platform to it. Currently, work is ongoing with the help of the White Fuse customer support team to import all our subscribers into one central database.
The Data Protection and IT (DPIT) Team was officially created in March 2022. Prior to that, it functioned as an extension of the Membership Engagement team, mostly to set up UWCGB’s new membership management platform, White Fuse The DPIT Team, as the name suggests, primarily has two objectives The first function is to comply with local data protection requirements. Our team members have taken part in Data Protection for Charities training, hosted by the National Council for Voluntary Organisations, which provided the helpful skills required to assess exposures and plug them. Our other function is to provide quotidien technical support to UWCGB Trustees, volunteers, students, and parents

The course of this exercise will naturally lead to two achievements: 1. 2. We have tons of other cool projects in the backlog, just waiting for enthusiastic volunteers to own them and make them theirs. If you like to look at a process and have big ideas on how to make it better, or just like to dabble with data and technology, reach out to the Volunteer Coordination team at volunteering@uwcgb org Finally, big shout out to all UWCGB staff and volunteers who make staggering contributions to the UWC movement!

32 the creation of a data control policy that will lead to minimising data exposure going forward; and an internal UWCGB Intranet a central location where important resources can be easily shared and accessed. The DPIT Team volunteers are reviewing all documents in our server to ensure they comply with the UK GDPR requirements.

COMMUNITY REFLECTIONS ALUMN ALIS JONES

My name is Alis and I am from Wales. I graduated from UWC Li Po Chun (LPC) in 2017 and Harvard University in 2022 When I first heard of UWC, I was amazed that such a movement exists Even my interview weekend conducted by UWCGB at Atlantic College reaffirmed my belief that UWC would uniquely facilitate growth and learning. Relocating from a sheep farm in North Wales to the bustling metropolis of Hong Kong was a comical juxtaposition, providing an early indication of UWC’s intensity and exploration of differences. Despite the overwhelming flurry of activities at UWC, from performing Welsh poetry in the European Cultural Evening to dragon boating, I was most influenced by the quieter moments of shared reflection. My most vivid memories of UWC are thus not captaining the school team in a 24 hour race fundraising against modern day slavery or organizing residential conferences for Hong Kong’s ethnic minority youth, but late night conversations with friends where our disparate lived experiences served as catalysts for reflecting on global problems and our relation to them These discussions encouraged us to consciously question our surroundings and critically appraise our assumptions, actions, and aspirations ▶

Collectively, my UWC and Harvard experiences complemented each other by emphasising the need to think but also to do, to prioritise the specific and the actionable as well as the intellectual and the abstract I will be forever grateful for my time at UWC and continue to grapple with how best to honour the educational opportunities and privilege I have benefited from.
34 This probing of what it means to enact one’s ideals and live an ethically justifiable life later shaped my time at Harvard, where I pursued an inter disciplinary degree in the social sciences with a focus in health policy The academic topics I explored were in many ways continuations of ideas discussed at UWC, spanning from health system design to linguistic rights. My interest in probing the pathway from ideas, to policy, to action initially nurtured in weekly Global Issues Forum debates at LPC culminated in my dissertation exploring policy implementation and bureaucracy in the healthcare sector Outside the classroom, I evaluated my decisions in relation to the ambition instilled in me at LPC to achieve a ‘net positive impact’. I thus spent my undergraduate years working as a homeless shelter case manager and directing Harvard’s sexual assault prevention group, whilst my summers involved a policy internship at the NHS and a research position at Save the Children Hoping to apply my skills to assist the COVID response, I took a year off from university during the pandemic to work for my local government’s contact tracing system and ultimately manage 75 contact tracers. The meaningfulness of this experience convinced me to pursue a career in the public sector, and I will soon begin working in project management on the UK Government’s Civil Service Fast Stream

35 This year, my involvements with the Promotions Team were in the following three core projects: facilitating the TikTok Team, producing the statistical analyses of the Webinars data and putting together a data team to help look after our growing promotions data On the TikTok front, I continued my work building the TikTok Team alongside Josh (UWC Thailand ’21) and Georgia (UWC USA ’23) and recruited a team of dedicated, energetic and super creative volunteers to help us produce content. Our TikTok account has recently surpassed 2,500 followers, which is great growth considering our account is only two years old. However, I recently passed this role fully to Josh and Georgia. Recently, I put together a “Handover Weekend” We conducted workshops to develop a TikTok Strategy for the remainder of this Selections cycle. The purpose of this weekend was not only to develop a strategy, but also to rethink and craft a TikTok Volunteer Experience which will hopefully continue to attract and retain our talented volunteers Building on my work from last year’s statistical analyses of Webinar Eventbrite data, this year we have been able to productionize a workflow to COMMUNITY REFLECTIONS VOLUNTEER & ALUMN MATTHEW LAM

36 analyse data more systematically on a periodic basis to better inform our promotional decisions. Although we are still lacking in volume of data for us to do any meaningful modelling or simulation of promotional outcomes, the Eventbrite data analysis in conjunction with Kinga’s annual team statistical presentation shed light on pain points and slippage areas in our promotional funnel This helped inform decisions such as the frequency of reminder emails for webinar attendees and affirm some of our conclusions from last year’s analysis on attendee retention For the rest of this year, we have plans to automate some of these analysis workflows and investigate using the Eventbrite Application Programming Interface (API) so that we can reduce manual input and streamline our data analysis processes. Lastly, as the scope of our promotions data related activities grow, it was necessary to recruit a small team to help achieve our objectives This year we welcomed Karol (UWC Mahindra ’02) and Adarsha (UWC Dilijan ’17) to the Promotions Data Team In the next two to three years, we hope to establish a database and begin migrating our existing Promotions and Selections data into a centralised system to allow for more cross fertilization amongst the teams.
