Dear Friends, Your generosity during the 2012-2013 fiscal year has changed lives right here in Larimer County.

Thank you for standing with United Way to strengthen our community.

Together, we showed the country what it truly means to LIVE UNITED, as our entire community rallied around our neighbors affected by the wildfires in 2012 and the massive flooding in 2013. United Way 2-1-1 answered thousands of calls from people needing to get help and those wanting to give help. Hundreds of volunteers and donors came together to support survivors on their road to stability and recovery.

As we move forward, United Way remains committed to our bold community goal of cutting poverty in half in Larimer County by 2025. Tackling complex community issues, like poverty, requires more than just short-term charity and band-aid approaches.

Thanks to the support of our donors and volunteers, we are working toward long-term, lasting solutions that make a difference on the root causes of societal problems in our community. Our focus is on the building blocks for a good quality of life: • Education – Helping children succeed in school and life.

• Income – Helping families become financially stable and independent.

• Health – Stabilizing families in crisis by meeting basic needs.

Because of your support, we’re on the right path. Through our Community Impact approach, we continue to work collaboratively with nonprofits, community leaders, businesses, and other organizations, to achieve long-term, lasting change that will enable all people in Larimer County to achieve their full potential.

We know that a good education leads to more employment opportunities, parents with good jobs are better able to provide stability for their families, and kids are more likely to succeed in school if they are healthy and well-fed when they enter the classroom.

LONG-TERM RECOVERY EFFORTS FOR HIGH PARK FIRE & WOODLAND HEIGHTS FIRE. With more than 250 homes destroyed by the devastating High Park and Woodland Heights (Estes Park) Fires in the summer of 2012, many displaced individuals and families have a long road ahead to stability.

A letter from a Long-Term Recovery Group Donor

In response to their ongoing needs, the Larimer County community came together to establish the Long-Term Recovery Group of Northern Colorado (LTRG-NoCo) Fund. Administered by Long-Term Recovery Group of Northern Colorado (LTRG-NoCo), made up of more than 50 nonprofit agencies, government organizations, faith-based groups and concerned citizens, the Fund is used specifically for long-term recovery needs of residents affected by the fires and subsequent flooding in Larimer County.

United Way of Larimer County serves as the fiscal agent for the Fund.

Long-term recovery needs addressed by the Fund include such items as health-related issues, replacement or repair of primary homes or personal property, temporary housing needs, and other compelling needs.

UNITED WAY OF LARIMER COUNTY EARNS 4-STAR CHARITY NAVIGATOR RATING. In August 2012, United Way of Larimer County announced it had been awarded the highest rating by Charity Navigator, the country’s largest and most-utilized independent evaluator of charities.

The prestigious 4-star rating is given to nonprofits that practice exceptional governance, fiscal responsibility, accountability and transparency in fulfilling their mission. According to Charity Navigator, approximately 25% of the charities they evaluate have received the highest rating, indicating that United Way of Larimer County outperforms most other charities in America.

GENERATION UNITED, A YOUNG LEADERS SOCIETY, LAUNCHED IN LARIMER COUNTY. A new group for young professionals in Larimer County, called Generation United, launched in mid-2012. Generation United brings together the passion and philanthropic power of young professionals to make a difference in our community. continued 6 | United Way of Larimer County

FISCAL YEAR JULY 1, 2012 – JUNE 30, 2013 The 2012-2013 fiscal year was a busy one for United Way of Larimer County. Here are some highlights of key happenings in the organization during that time:

GENERATION UNITED continued Led by a volunteer steering committee made up of community leaders under the age of 40, Generation United provides young professionals with the opportunity to join philanthropic forces, create a culture of giving, and empower the next generation. The group provides organized social events, volunteer projects, and other unique ways for young philanthropists to make a collective difference.

In its first year, Generation United had more than 50 charter members. See page 26 for more information.

SMART START FOR KIDS WORKS TO HELP LOCAL CHILDREN SUCCEED. United Way of Larimer County has partnered with the Early Childhood Council of Larimer County, Poudre School District (Fort Collins), Thompson School District (Loveland), Estes Park School District, childcare providers, Colorado State University, and several other nonprofit groups to launch an initiative called Smart Start for Kids.

Smart Start for Kids is a county-wide initiative to help Larimer County children succeed. With a focus on school readiness and early literacy, Smart Start for Kids aims to ensure that every child enters school ready to learn and is reading at grade level by the end of third grade.

The school readiness component, called Be Ready Larimer County, is a public awareness campaign directed toward ensuring that every child enters school prepared to learn. For more information on Be Ready, visit www.BeReadyLarimerCounty.org.

PLANNED GIVING: LEGACY SOCIETY TREE UNVEILED. Legacy Society Charter members are amongst United Way’s most loyal donors and have made a significant commitment to our community through a planned gift to United Way of Larimer County.

In August 2012, the Legacy Society Recognition Tree was revealed at United Way of Larimer County’s Fort Collins office. It is a beautiful cast bronze tree with individually engraved brass leaves honoring each Legacy Society member.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY 2012. For the 13th year in a row, Make A Difference Day 2012 showcased successful collaboration of volunteers with local nonprofits and community organizations.

Volunteers of all ages participated in a variety of projects, including renovating childcare classrooms, hosting Halloween events, assembling quilts for veterans, and many more.

During the week-long event, more than 2,700 volunteers completed nearly 100 volunteer projects around Larimer County – 900 of those volunteers were youth.

The resulting impact is more than $240,000 worth of volunteer hours invested in the community. Thanks to everyone that gave their time and talent to participate in Make A Difference Day activities!

GIVE NEXT, A YOUTH PHILANTHROPY PROGRAM, LAUNCHED IN LOCAL SCHOOLS The mission of Give Next is to educate students about the vital role that nonprofits and philanthropy play in the community by providing students with opportunities for service and leadership through philanthropy and volunteering.

Give Next is a school-based program that is implemented into an existing classroom curriculum and connects students locally to issues such as hunger, homelessness and domestic violence.

Through Give Next, each classroom receives $5,000 for grant making in the areas of education, income, health, arts, and the environment. The money for the classroom grants is donated by local businesses, foundations and philanthropists.

The 2012-2013 academic year served as the pilot year for the program. Give Next is a program of United Way of Larimer County with major support provided by Bohemian Foundation, the program’s mission sponsor.

HOMELESS GEAR & HAND UP COOPERATIVE JOIN FORCES. Homeless Gear and Hand Up Cooperative combined forces in December 2012 to become an independent 501(c)3 organization operating under the name Homeless Gear.

Both programs were founded at United Way of Larimer County in 2008 as a way to address unmet needs in our community. United Way is very proud to have played a role in launching these two special programs in Larimer County. We congratulate Homeless Gear on taking this big step and are grateful for their important service to our community.

MORE THAN 130 VOLUNTEERS ENGAGED FOR NATIONAL VOLUNTEER MONTH. United Way of Larimer County’s Volunteer Engagement Team engaged 134 community volunteers to complete nine different services projects as part of National Volunteer Month in April 2013.

Local nonprofit organizations that benefitted from the service projects include Community Life Center, Food Bank for Larimer County, Habitat for Humanity, Poudre Landmarks Foundation, Larimer County Division of Children, Youth and Family Services, The Center for Family Outreach, The Family Center, The Matthews House and Turning Point.

The 134 volunteers gave a total of 771 volunteer hours, which translates to a resulting impact of $17,294.

2013 STATE OF THE COMMUNITY FOCUSES ON SELF-SUFFICIENCY AND FINANCIAL STABILITY. Nearly 800 people gathered at the Embassy Suites Loveland on June 6, 2013 for United Way of Larimer County’s annual State of the Community event.

The event focused on the importance of the community working together to help families in Larimer County to become self-sufficient, employed, and independent.

STATE OF THE COMMUNITY continued Speakers included Rocky Scott, Director of Corporate Affairs for Woodward, Inc.; Yvonne Myers, Health Systems Director at Columbine Health Systems; and Loveland resident Beth Hicks, who shared her personal story of her struggles and ultimate success in providing for her family as a single mother living in poverty.

Local community members were also recognized for their outstanding volunteer and collaboration efforts. Mary Carraher, of Project Self-Sufficiency of Loveland-Fort Collins, was presented with the 2013 Community Collaborator of the Year award.

WOMENGIVE CELEBRATES $1 MILLION IMPACT AND 300+ MEMBERS. Thanks to the generous support of its members and supporters, WomenGive has surpassed $1 Million invested in its mission of helping women in Larimer County continue their education and become self-sufficient.

WomenGive started in 2006 when United Way of Larimer County and a group of local women engaged the collective power of women to make a difference in the lives of other women and girls in Larimer County.

Here is a look at what WomenGive has achieved in the last seven years: • More than $1 Million invested to help women and girls.

• 300+ women have become WomenGive members.

• 373 childcare scholarships have been awarded.

• 137 single mothers have benefited from WomenGive childcare scholarships.

• 197 children have benefited from WomenGive childcare scholarships.

• 59 women have graduated with the help of WomenGive.

UNITED WAY TRANSFERS OWNERSHIP, OPERATIONS OF MURPHY CENTER FOR HOPE TO SERVE 6.8. United Way of Larimer County announced in June 2012 that it would officially transfer ownership and operations of the Sister Mary Alice Murphy Center for Hope to Serve 6.8, a local 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, effective July 1, 2013.

United Way led the capital campaign and construction of the facility, which opened in north Fort Collins in March 2009 as an innovative “one-stop-shop” for families and individuals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness to access services and improve their circumstances. More than 20 different nonprofit and community organizations currently have a presence at the Murphy Center.

With the support of Touchstone Health Partners, who has managed the operations of the center since 2009, more than 120,000 visits have occurred since its opening day. That includes more than 10,000 unduplicated individuals, and 37% of those using the center were families with children.

Serve 6.8 will maintain the current collaborative business model of the Murphy Center, and will also retain the facility name. Sister Mary Alice Murphy, a longtime community advocate for the homeless, gave her blessing to Serve 6.8 to continue using her name on the facility as they took on its ownership and operations.

UNITED WAY 2-1-1 PROVIDE VITAL CONNECTION TO SERVICES IN LARIMER COUNTY. United Way 2-1-1 is a community connection to services and information that anyone in our community can access. All services are confidential and free of charge.

By calling 2-1-1 (or 970-407-7066 from a cell phone), you can get help or information on crisis hotlines, food and clothing, housing and utility assistance, aging services, disaster recovery, mental health services, volunteer opportunities, health and medical needs, legal assistance, donation referrals, substance abuse services, and so much more.

More than 47,000 calls came into our local team of 2-1-1 community specialists from people needing to get help and those wanting to give help in Larimer County between July 2012 and June 2013.

In the 2012-2013 fiscal year, 24% of the total clients who called United Way 2-1-1 in Larimer County were individuals with disabilities, and 15% of total clients were over the age of 60 years old.

COMBINED FEDERAL CAMPAIGN (CFC). The Combined Federal Campaign is the only fundraising campaign allowed in the federal workplace. Federal employees are able to contribute to an approved charity of choice, such as United Way of Larimer County.

There are more than 2,600 federal employees who reside in Larimer County. United Way’s role during the 20122013 fiscal year was to serve as the Principled Combined Fund Organization (PCFO) of the local fundraising campaign. There are no membership fees associated with this partnership.

Important Note on Net Assets: The Long-Term Recovery Fund was established in July 2012 in response to the High Park and Woodland Heights wildfires in Larimer County. Donations collected during the year ended June 30, 2013 totaled $483,195, of which $98,426 had been distributed to residents as of June 30, 2013. The remaining balance of $384,769 at June 30, 2013 is restricted for long-term recovery needs of Larimer County residents impacted by the wildfires. The Long-Term Recovery Fund for Larimer County wildfires is administered by the Long-Term Recovery Group of Northern Colorado (LTRG-NoCo), which is made up of more than 50 nonprofit agencies, government organizations, faith-based groups and concerned citizens.

Independent audit was completed by RLR CPAs and approved by United Way of Larimer County’s Board of Directors on October 23, 2013.

A PARTNERSHIP OF UNITED WAY OF LARIMER COUNTY AND THE WOMEN’S FOUNDATION OF COLORADO, WOMENGIVE PROVIDES FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR CHILDCARE FOR SINGLE MOTHERS ATTENDING COLLEGE. The cost of childcare is a major barrier to self-sufficiency for women and girls in Larimer County. The initiative also focuses on addressing public policy for self-sufficiency of women and girls in our community and statewide.
