UW-PLATTEVILLE HISTORY

For over 150 years, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville has been an educational leader thanks to a determined Pioneer attitude that has enriched Southwest Wisconsin and the tri-state region of Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa

The university was founded in 1866 as the first state teacher preparation institution in Wisconsin, then called the Platteville Normal School. Classes were held in Rountree Hall, located at the corner of Main and Elm streets. Rountree Hall was actually built 13 years earlier in 1853 to accommodate the rapidly increasing enrollment of the Platteville Academy, founded in 1839 (even before Wisconsin’s statehood) by the city’s Presbyterian Church.

UW-Platteville also has roots in the Wisconsin Mining Trade School, established in 1907 to train specialized technicians to work in the mining operations surrounding Platteville. When the Normal School vacated Rountree Hall for its new quarters in Main Hall, the mining school moved in. In 1917, a third year was added to the curriculum, making the Wisconsin Mining School the first school in the United States to offer a three-year study in mining engineering, upon completion of which a student received a diploma.

One of the university’s oldest traditions originated in the year 1936 when the mining school students began work on the world’s largest “M” by placing rocks in a pattern on the southwest slope of the mound, located a few miles east of the city. Completed the following year, the “M” measures 214 x 241 feet and consists of some 400 tons of whitewashed stone. The lighting of the “M” is now the featured ceremony each fall during Homecoming weekend.

The mining school became the Wisconsin Institute of Technology in 1939 and later merged with the Platteville State Teachers College in 1959 to become the Wisconsin State College and Institute of Technology at Platteville.

During the 1960s, the college experienced a period of rapid growth resulting in the construction of several new halls. In 1966, the name was changed again to the Wisconsin State University-Platteville. The university and all other public institutions of higher education in Wisconsin merged in 1971 to form the UW System, governed by a single Board of Regents. As a result of the merger, the university experienced its most recent name change to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.

In 2018, UW-Platteville collaboratively integrated with two former two-year colleges. UW-Platteville Baraboo Sauk County and UW-Platteville Richland officially became branch campuses after approval of the Higher Learning Commission on July 1, 2018.

HONORS AND HIGH HONORS

Students who have completed 48 or more credits at UW-Platteville and who have earned high cumulative grade point averages during their undergraduate careers graduate in two categories: Honors (3.50–3.74 grade point averages – Magna Cum Laude) and High Honors (3.75–4.00 grade point averages – Summa Cum Laude). These students can be distinguished by the asterisks marking their names in the list of graduates and by the gold honor cords which they wear today.

The following students have been chosen as valedictorians by their respective colleges, based on comprehensive review of their stellar academic records.

Valedictorians

College of Business, Industry, Life Science and Agriculture ........................... Anna G. Maramonte College of Engineering, Mathematics and Science ................... Ryan D. THE UNIVERSITY MACE

The Mace, as described in ancient history, is a symbol of authority. During Medieval Times it was a studded, club-like weapon made of iron and capable of breaking armor. By the 13th century, the Mace was used for civil purposes and was carried in processions of dignitaries. Today, the Mace is used by universities to represent order, authority, and the power of knowledge. At UW-Platteville, the commencement marshal carries the Mace in the commencement processional, immediately preceding those who sit on the stage.

Our university Mace is 4 feet long and is made of black walnut and brass. Our university seal is the most prominent feature of the Mace. The seal pays tribute to our history and includes the founding date of this university—1866—and icons from our past including a bell, representing our roots in education, and an “M,” signifying our heritage in mining. UW-Platteville’s Mace was created in 2002 by graduate student Andy Van Slett, and his advisor, Dr. Kyle Metzloff, Professor of industrial studies.

RECOGNIZING OUR INTERNATIONAL CONNECTIONS

UW-Platteville has a strong commitment to preparing “students of and for the world.” Advances in technology and telecommunications and a remaking of the global economy are bringing great change to UW-Platteville, our nation, and our world. Our graduates must be prepared to live, work, and contribute to an interconnected world.

Students who have studied abroad and international students are honored with special stoles either displaying the flag of the country where they studied or, in the case of international students, displaying the flag of their home country.

In addition to displaying the flags of the United States, the state of Wisconsin, and our university, UW-Platteville displays the flags of the countries represented by international students studying on the UW-Platteville campus.

44

ACADEMIC ATTIRE

The caps, gowns, and hoods worn at college and university functions date back to the Middle Ages. In the 12th and 13th centuries, education was supervised by the church, and many of the students and faculty were members of religious orders. As a result, the academic costumes which evolved bore a distinct relationship to church garb. The medieval scholar wore a habit or cloak to which a cowl or hood was attached. The hood could be pulled over the head in inclement weather, and the cloak provided warmth in the damp and drafty halls of learning of the medieval university.

In the United States, as a result of our English heritage, caps and gowns have been used from colonial times. Until after the Civil War, students at most American universities wore caps and gowns daily while in residence. The style, colors, and materials used in academic regalia, however, were not standardized until 1894 when the American Intercollegiate Commission adopted the Intercollegiate Code.

The Intercollegiate Code provides for three types of gowns. Those for the bachelor’s degree, earned after undergraduate study, have long, pointed sleeves, and are designed to be worn closed. The holder of the master’s degree wears a gown with an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist. The sleeve base hangs down and the rear part of its oblong shape is square-cut. The gown may be worn open or closed. An alternate and older master’s gown is also permissible. This gown is always worn open, has a long sleeve which is square and closed at the end, and has a slit near the elbow which permits the forearm to come through. Gowns for the doctoral degree may also be worn open or closed, but they carry broad velvet panels down the front and three velvet bars on the full, round, open sleeves. This trimming may be either black or the color distinctive to the field of learning to which the degree pertains.

Traditionally, academic gowns for each level are black although an increasing number of American institutions have adopted the European custom of having gowns in the university’s distinctive color. The gown for Harvard University, for example, is crimson, while Princeton’s is black trimmed with orange.

The commencement marshal and faculty leaders are clad in blue and orange doctoral gowns specially designed for UW-Platteville.

The black Oxford or mortarboard style cap is standard in America. Only the doctor’s cap may be made of velvet, and only doctors and the presidents of institutions may wear a gold tassel on the cap.

Of the three pieces of academic attire, it is the hood that adds great color to the ceremony and provides the most readily discernible information about its wearer. The system established by the American Intercollegiate Commission enables anyone to distinguish at a glance the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctor’s, and at the same time recognize the university which has awarded the degree as well as the wearer’s field of study. The silk lining of the hood bears the official academic color or colors of the institution conferring the degree.

Persons holding degrees from UW-Platteville, for example, wear academic hoods lined in orange and dark blue. The velvet trim or border on the hood indicates the major field of study to which the degree pertains. Thus, agriculture’s color is maize, arts and letters’ is white, business’ is drab, education’s is light blue, engineering’s is orange, law’s is purple, music’s is pink, science’s is golden yellow, and theology’s is scarlet. Doctor’s of Philosophy wear hoods trimmed in dark blue. The bachelor’s hood, which is sometimes worn upon completion of the course even though the degree has not yet been officially conferred, has the same shape as the master’s hood. The doctor’s hood, however, is both larger and of a different style, having a flat panel at the back.

45
