LETTER XXXXXX FROM THE DEAN

Dear College of EMS Alumni and Friends,

I am excited to share this newest edition of the Geode with you. As you are aware, everything we do within our college is focused on the goal of providing an outstanding education to our students which in turn benefits our communities and industry partners.

Our chemistry department started delivering General Chemistry labs in Boebel Hall last fall. We are excited to unveil Sesquicentennial Hall this fall. As you read through this issue of the Geode, you will learn about the spaces available to our students and the community, including the Huff Family Innovation Center. These state-of-the-art facilities will enhance our students’ learning, foster collaboration, and highlight the cutting-edge nature of our programs.

We have also added new programs— Data Science in Mathematics, and Computer Science + X and Cybersecurity in Computer Science and Software Engineering. The Data Science degree helps students develop skills in statistics, mathematics, and programing.

It is also a cross-disciplinary program that allows students to prepare for careers in multiple fields. The Computer Science + X degrees will allow students to pair computer science with other majors and pursue a passion area while gaining marketable computer science skills.

Cybersecurity is an in-demand field, and we are excited to add a program that builds upon the solid foundation we have in computer science and software engineering.

Finally, our focus remains on student recruitment and retention. I am confident that our new facilities and degrees will excite students with the innovative education that the College of EMS can provide.

Computer Science + X degree program opens new opportunities for students Alison Parkins

R

esponding to the increasing demand for computing skills in the workforce—in both technical and non-technical professions alike—the University of Wisconsin-Platteville is rolling out a new Computer Science + X degree program, giving students more flexibility to pursue majors they are passionate about while acquiring in-demand computer skills.

The CS+X degree is an interdisciplinary major that combines a core curriculum in computer science with most of the major requirements for another chosen discipline.

“Traditionally, computer science departments have trained students to work in the tech industry,” said Dr. Afzal Upal, Professor and Chair of the UW-Platteville Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering. “A consequence of the adoption of computing technology in every field of life is that computing skills are increasingly being demanded by employers, even from employees who work in non-technical professions.”

More than 30 industry advisory board members from the computing field supported and confirmed the need for development of this new program. The computer science team is currently offering CS + X degrees in business and supply chain management, computational biology, digital humanities, chemistry, history, philosophy, and a cybersecurity + criminal justice and forensics program.

“Traditionally, students have had to choose between following their heart’s desire to pursue something, such as music, that they’re passionate about or being more practical and thinking about pursuing a major that will get them a job after graduation,” said Upal. “Our CS+X programs allow students to pursue their passion in arts, music, dance, philosophy, social science, or humanities, while also acquiring computing skills needed to find a job after graduation.”

UW-Platteville offers opportunity to sponsor engraved pavers Alison Parkins

W

ith construction of Sesquicentennial Hall underway, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Foundation is offering alumni, friends, students, faculty, staff, and corporate partners the opportunity to be a visible part of its engineering legacy by sponsoring an engraved paver along the walkways and patios surrounding Sesquicentennial Hall and Busby Hall— formerly Engineering Hall.

Three sizes of pavers were available for sponsorship. Each sponsorship directly supports undergraduate research opportunities in UW-Platteville’s College of Engineering, Mathematics and Science.

Participation in research is one of the most impactful opportunities students find at UW-Platteville, allowing them to build connections with faculty, clarify their area of interest, contribute their knowledge to solve real-world problems,

Engraving the sponsored pavers is a learning opportunity for students in itself, as all pavers will be produced, by students, in the College of EMS shops.

UW-Platteville to support rural entrepreneurs with new prototyping services Alison Parkins

A

lready known as a hub for creativity and innovation in the tri-state region, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville will soon be offering additional services to budding entrepreneurs throughout the region with the launch of Pioneer Prototyping Services. In March 2021, UW-Platteville was awarded an Entrepreneurship Support Grant from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation in order to create the infrastructure needed to help rural entrepreneurs turn their product ideas into prototypes.

“We have really great capabilities— both in equipment and talent—at the university for innovation, problem solving, prototyping, and fabrication, which is only going to be made better with the new Huff Family Innovation Center in Sesquicentennial Hall,” said Dr. Jodi Prosise, Professor and Chair of UW-Platteville’s Department of Mechanical Engineering. “We also know that there are tons of innovators in our community, but when they have ideas, they have to go hundreds—maybe thousands—of miles and pay a lot of money to get prototyping services.

We’d like to be able to enrich our region by supporting entrepreneurs and innovators.”

As the largest employer in Southwest Wisconsin and a major provider of STEM talent in the Wisconsin workforce, UW-Platteville is uniquely

suited to offer these services.

UW-Platteville was awarded a federal Economic Development Administration grant last year to fund the IDEA Hub of Southwest Wisconsin, in partnership with the Southwestern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission, to develop a pipeline of entrepreneurs in the rural area. The opening of Sesquicentennial Hall this fall, with its 20,000-square-foot Huff Family Innovation Center—slated to be one of the largest makerspaces in the Midwest—will continue to fuel this entrepreneurial culture.

“As a student-centered institution that is really well-known for hands-on STEM education, it’s exciting that we are going to be able to provide students with the opportunity to work on real projects for real innovators in our community outside the classroom,” said Prosise.

Hanson family donates to Dale Dixon Chair of Engineering fund Kristie Reynolds

L

arry and Peggy Hanson recently donated $25,000 to the Dale Dixon Chair of Engineering fund, which supports University of WisconsinPlatteville faculty. In recognition of their gift, the Hansons will name one of the collaboration studios in the newest engineering building, Sesquicentennial Hall.

Larry Hanson graduated from UW-Platteville in 1971 with a major in civil engineering and was one of Dixon’s students. He fondly remembers his time at UW-Platteville and how the faculty became role models and prepared him for the start of his career in civil engineering.

“The faculty helped me succeed in both the classroom and university life,” said Hanson. “They really care about students and are available outside classroom hours to discuss material being taught and answer questions. They encouraged students to participate and take leadership roles in organizations outside the classroom, such as the American Society of Engineers and Chi Epsilon, for me personally.”

Hanson is Principal of Hanson Consulting Engineers PLLC. He and his wife currently reside in Phoenix, Arizona, and attend alumni events in Arizona every year. He believes that financially supporting faculty will help retain accredited faculty, which will be

beneficial to students.

“Faculty need opportunity and financial support to participate in professional growth opportunities, such as seminars, conferences and coursework, to learn about societal challenges and emerging technologies so they can bring this information back to the classroom.”

The Dale Dixon Professor of Engineering Award was established

by Dale Dixon, a former engineering department chair in the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Science to support engineering faculty excellence. Each year, engineering faculty can apply for a three-year award of $15,000 total, awarded $5,000 per year, to be used for professional development, research and/or student salaries.

Boldt family makes donation to name John I. Boldt Study Space in Sesquicentennial Hall Kristie Reynolds

I

n honor of alumnus John Boldt’s recent retirement, his wife, Barbara, and family made a donation to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Foundation to name the John I. Boldt Study Space in Sesquicentennial Hall.

John, a Platteville native and 1976 UW-Platteville civil engineering graduate, has often noted that having a great university with an outstanding engineering program in his hometown gave him the opportunity to pursue his dream of a career in engineering. He is a registered professional engineer in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa, and has been involved in the consulting engineering industry for more than 40 years. John retired from Clark Dietz Inc., where he worked since 1994, most recently in the roles of president, CEO, and chairman of the board.

“John has always been a proponent of the ‘pay it forward’ philosophy and has worked throughout his career to mentor and create new opportunities for the next generation of aspiring engineers,” said Barbara Boldt. “Our family is proud to honor John with this donation upon his retirement.”

John and Barbara also have an endowed scholarship, the John I. and Barbara L. (Bishop) Boldt Scholarship, which supports students pursuing engineering or mathematics. Both

A

longtime partnership between the University of WisconsinPlatteville and Strand Associates was recently reaffirmed with a $200,000 commitment from the engineering firm, located in Madison, Wisconsin.

“The University of WisconsinPlatteville is an important strategic partner for Strand Associates Inc.,” said Matt Richards, President and CEO of Strand Associates. “UW-Platteville graduates are well-educated and wellprepared, and have and will continue to play a large role in Strand’s growth.”

Strand Associates currently employs nearly 50 UW-Platteville alumni, including Richards, who graduated in 1991.

A portion of the gift will support student employment at CenterPOINT, as students play a significant role in tutoring and outreach in the center.

Butterfield selected to represent U.S. at world forum Alison Parkins

U

niversity of Wisconsin-Platteville senior Spencer Butterfield is one of only two student-athletes nationwide handpicked to represent the United States at the International University Sports Federation World Forum in Costa Rica this spring. This biennial forum brings together students, officials, and other partners from more than 60 countries to engage in discussions on education, culture, and sport. Butterfield, originally from Shawnee, Kansas, is a member of the men’s soccer team and President of the Pioneer Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

“Spencer is the quintessential studentathlete,” said Dr. Kristina Navarro, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation and Assistant Chancellor for Sports Administration. “He is solid in the classroom, engaged in the community, and a true leader on campus as well as the soccer field. I am thrilled for him to have this professional growth opportunity.”

Held over a five-day period and in a different country each year, the FISU World Forum centers around a main theme. This year’s theme, “University Sport as a Driver for Sustainable Development,” is a topic Butterfield—a sustainability and renewable energy systems and Spanish double-major—is well familiar with, after spending last summer interning in Peru, where he researched solar panel policy in rural communities.

“I am incredibly honored and humbled to represent the U.S. at the upcoming FISU World Forum,” said Butterfield.

“This is an extremely unique opportunity that allows me to combine my dedication to collegiate athletics, knowledge of sustainability, and passion for Spanish culture all in one event. This selection would not have been possible without my incredible academic and athletic support system at UW-Platteville. I would like to especially thank my advisors Dr. Schulenburg and Dr. Tas as well as Dr. Navarro for providing me with the confidence and inspiration to be selected.

I sincerely hope to make UW-Platteville and the U.S. proud this April while in Costa Rica.”

This is the 16th FISU World Forum.

Since 1992, the event has been held every two years, alternating with the FISU World University Games event. According to its website, since its founding in 1949, FISU is the key driver to expand the role and reach of university sport around the world. FISU believes that sports values and sports practice work in perfect synchronicity with one’s university studies.

Ward wins state-wide civil engineering award Justice Hendrick

J

esse Ward, a senior, civil engineering major from Ladora, Iowa, was recently honored by the Wisconsin Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers with the Outstanding Senior Civil Engineering Student Award. The recognition is awarded annually to one senior-level civil engineering student who has made significant contributions both to the organization, their own academic career and the career of their fellow students.

Student to earn degree after 20 years, credits Platteville Engineering Partnerships program Ruth Wendlandt

A

s Luke Strenn navigated his professional career in law enforcement, he always felt he was missing his calling of working in the fields of engineering, mathematics, and science. Now, after 20 years, Strenn is preparing to graduate this May from the University of WisconsinPlatteville with a degree in mechanical engineering. Strenn credits the Platteville Engineering Partnerships (PEP) program with giving him the opportunity to fulfill his dream.

“The UW-Platteville staff that is on the UW-Oshkosh Fox Cities campus has been super supportive and loving. I can’t emphasize that enough,” said Strenn.

“Every time I would go back after taking breaks, I would be embarrassed. [The instructors] were always receptive, supportive, and understanding.”

and Science graduate programs Director and mechanical engineering Professor, the PEP program caters to non-traditional students, those who are place-bound due to work or family obligations, and allows students to complete their degree in mechanical or electrical engineering without having to move to Platteville.

“The degree is the same degree as you would earn on the main campus in Platteville using a lot of the same faculty members, but it is delivered to your location via asynchronous delivery or, if in the Fox Valley area, via face-to-face instruction,” he said. “Even though you may be physically located away from the main campus, you will still get the hands-on skills UW-Platteville is known for through labs that either are sent to your location or through Super Saturday labs—labs that are held periodically throughout a semester in a fixed location allowing you to work sideby-side with your colleagues. The PEP program provides a great alternative for those that want to earn their degree but are unable to pick up their lives and move to the main campus.”

UW System Awards Dr. Holly Attenborough, Associate Professor of mathematics at UW-Platteville, was selected as one of four recipients across the UW System of the 2021 Alliant Energy Underkofler Excellence in Teaching Award. The award, funded by an endowment from the Alliant Energy Foundation Inc., recognizes extraordinary undergraduate teachers at UW System universities within Alliant Energy’s service area.

Attenborough joined UW-Platteville in 2013. She teaches a variety of courses, ranging from general education math classes and the calculus sequence to upper-level math-major courses. Attenborough also has a strong focus on scholarship of teaching and learning research and has developed materials and activities in her classroom to improve student engagement and active learning.

Dr. Chelsea Lancelle, Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, is one of four UW-Platteville faculty members selected for the 2021–22 Wisconsin Teaching Fellows and Scholars Program. The UW System program offers faculty a unique opportunity to collaborate with other teachers from across the system and complete a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning project.

Lancelle’s project will explore the Micro-Spiral Method and whether it can change students’ perception of their learning and metacognition in a general education science course. The Micro-Spiral Method involves structured repetition built into a course. It has previously been used in a middle-school setting to address student learning and absenteeism.

UW-Platteville Awards Dr. Austin Polebitski, Associate Professor of civil and environmental engineering at UW-Platteville, is being honored with the 2021 Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence. The purpose of the award is to recognize a tenure track faculty member who has made distinguished contributions to the mission of UW-Platteville as an outstanding teacher. Polebitski credits his colleagues with helping him get to this point.

“I’m excited to continue my progress towards becoming a full professor,” he said. “My peers nominated me for the award, hopefully it means I’m headed in the right direction. I appreciate that I have co-workers who thought I was deserving. It makes me happy and humble to be amongst really good educators in the department.”

FACULTY XXXXXX AND STAFF FEATURES

College Awards The EMS Excellence in Research and Scholarly Activities Award was awarded to Dr. Mehdi Roopaei. Roopaei started working at UW-Platteville in 2018 and has already built an impressive record of publications, funded grant proposals, and undergraduate research. In the last year alone, Dr. Roopaei has secured two grants from the Dairy Innovation Hub totaling over $100,000. In addition, he has published six conference papers and one journal paper.

The EMS Excellence in Teaching Award was awarded to Dr. Kyle Czarnecki. Czarnecki started working at UW-Platteville in 2016 and has already developed a reputation as an exceptional teacher. His success in the classroom stems from his philosophy of teaching, which extends well beyond the role of content deliverer. “My goal as an instructor is to create a welcoming learning environment in which students can obtain a working knowledge of course content, critical thinking skills, and a general appreciation for mathematics. Additionally, I want to instill in my students a sense of independence, confidence, and a thirst for lifelong learning.”

The EMS Excellence in Advising Award was awarded to Dr. Edoardo Rubino. Rubino started working at UW-Platteville in 2017. In a short amount of time, he has developed an inspiring advising philosophy. In it, he identifies three fundamental components to good advising: attention to graduation requirements, attention to the student outside of academics, and attention to post­ graduation plans.

Zolper awarded Thompson Center funding to pursue infrastructure research Ruth Wendlandt

D

r. Thomas Zolper, University of Wisconsin-Platteville Associate Professor of mechanical engineering and sustainability and renewable energy systems has been awarded a faculty research grant from the Tommy G. Thompson Center on Public Leadership for his project titled, “The Wisconsin Strategy: Independent Infrastructure.”

Zolper is examining how to enhance the resilience of Wisconsin energy and information infrastructure against natural and man-made failures to reduce public emergencies.

“It’s a great honor,” said Zolper. “The research is going to focus on energy infrastructure. It includes both the fossil fuels and electricity grids—it’s a pretty broad scope. Energy infrastructure generally denotes petroleum pipelines for gas and diesel fuel as well as electricity generators including wind turbines, solar arrays, nuclear, coal, gas, and hydroelectric power plants, as well as all their interconnections.”

Zolper says infrastructure failures have led to public emergencies across the U.S. and cited the failure of Texas’s power grid last February after winter storms swept across the state leaving millions without power for days and the Colonial Pipeline cyberattack last May that stopped fuel flow to several East Coast states. He pointed to how a single lightning strike in 1977 caused

To help navigate vulnerabilities in equipment design and network interfaces, Zolper is incorporating students from two of his energy classes in the project. This semester, students from his SRES course (ENERGY 2340) will assist in an energy audit of Wisconsin. Students will have the opportunity to propose potential solutions or adjustments to the energy systems of the state’s infrastructure.

“Student engagement is a beneficial aspect of research,” said Zolper. “When the research is focused on most of the students’ home state of Wisconsin, it makes it a lot more personal. It allows the sustainability enthusiasts to feel like they are engaged in the process of improving our infrastructure and making it more renewable.”

Zolper and his students will be conducting research throughout the 2021–22 academic year.

Staff honored for commitment to international students Alison Parkins

T

hree current and former staff members at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville are being honored with the 2021 Excellence in International Advising Award.

Tammy Salmon-Stephens, Barbara Kluesner, and Lisa Lloyd were selected for the award, which is presented annually to faculty or staff members who demonstrate their passion for and innovation in helping students incorporate an education abroad experience in their degree program or have had a significant positive impact on the international student population at the university.

Salmon-Stephens has worked at UW-Platteville since 1997 and is currently the Director of the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Science Student Success Programs.

She is actively involved in programs to support women and underrepresented minorities in STEM fields and student success, and she said the opportunities to work with international students in

this role has left a lasting impact.

“We in Platteville, Wisconsin, are so blessed to have the opportunity to get to know and learn from our international students,” said Salmon-Stephens. “They bring a piece of the rest of the world to us, in this small and rural community in Southwest Wisconsin. NSF grant will help create future of equitable infrastructure Alison Parkins

L

ed by the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, a consortium of four universities (UW-Platteville, Virginia Tech, Colorado State University, and Lafayette College) recently received a $300,000 grant from the National Science Foundation. Under the direction of Dr. Philip Parker, Acting Dean of the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Science, the Center for Infrastructure Transformation and Education (CIT-E) will use the grant to transform the approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the field of civil and environmental engineering education.

Created nearly a decade ago and led by Parker, CIT-E is a group of professionals across multiple institutions nationwide that share an interest and passion for infrastructure education. Over the past several years, their work has included developing a model introduction to infrastructure course—the material of which has been adopted by dozens of universities across the country. This new grant will expand the capacity of the members of CIT-E to support the efforts of faculty integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion into civil and environmental engineering curricula.

This project will involve gathering and studying successful case studies from other institutions, as well as evaluating CIT-E’s own resources and needs, in order to identify and address gaps in their ability to do this work.

“This grant will allow us to analyze ourselves and really put ourselves under an X-ray to look closely and see if we have enough experts in this area of diversity, equity, and inclusion within CIT-E,” said Parker. “How well situated are we to make change happen?”

The change CIT-E hopes to ultimately address is the destructive relationship between systemic racism and infrastructure. Examples of this, Parker said, can be seen in a number of ways—from communities of underrepresented minorities being displaced when new infrastructure is built or being cut off from opportunities because of infrastructure design, to the increased likelihood of poor health due to proximity to environmental hazards.

“This work aligns directly with UW-Platteville’s mission,” said Parker.

“We are helping students become broader in perspective, be ethically more responsible, and contribute wisely as an accomplished professional and knowledgeable citizen in a diverse, global community.”

Returning the favor for Platteville students Heidi Rhinehart

K

en Mika ’08, ’15 wants UW-Platteville students to have the same good fortune as he has had and that’s why he gives back to UW-Platteville.

“Throughout college I had two internships and a co-op with local Wisconsin engineering firms,” said Mika. “When I graduated in 2008, having a job before your last semester was not common (due to the great recession) and I can only thank the UW-Platteville engineering program for the education and opportunities they provided me.”

Mika began his career with Natural Resource Technology Inc. in 2008.

During this time, he got involved with the American Society of Civil Engineers to give back to the younger generation.

He started with volunteer activities but quickly moved into a leadership role as Vice-President of the ASCE Wisconsin Section Southeast Branch Younger Members Group.

In 2012, Mika decided to return to UW-Platteville to pursue his Master of Science in Engineering.

“The UW-Platteville online master’s program in engineering is phenomenal and the skills I obtained from the program have further accelerated my career,” said Mika. “Right after graduating with my master’s, I was promoted into a leadership role at my then company and took on various new responsibilities. The master’s degree gave me the skills to accelerate 24

in that role and to take on even more leadership roles in my career.”

Mika currently is a Senior Project Manager with Tetra Tech in Green Bay, Wisconsin. He credits UW-Platteville for where he is in his career.

“Without having UW-Platteville in my life, I don’t believe I would be as fortunate as I believe I have been,” said Mika. “I want to support UW-Platteville in the hope of other students being able to have the fortunate careers they are looking to have.”

Homecoming 2021 Award Recipients Outstanding Alumni Lauren Ray graduated in 2001 with a degree in civil engineering with a structural emphasis. This year marks her 20th anniversary at IIW, P.C., where she is Vice President. Her leadership positions at IIW, P.C. have included Structural Department Team Leader, Land Development Department Team Leader, and Field Services Department Team Leader. She has been a licensed Professional Engineer since 2006 and licensed Structural Engineer since 2007. Ray serves on UW-Platteville’s Civil Engineering Advisory Board and volunteers her time giving presentations in UW-Platteville classrooms and taking part in the Engineering Seminar Series. Her volunteer work in her community includes being a member of the Shullsburg Lions Club, a recentlycompleted term on the Shullsburg School District Board, and more.

Samantha Kevern graduated in 2005 with a degree in civil engineering with a structural emphasis before earning her master’s degree in the same field from Iowa State University.

Her career has spanned the fields of forensic engineering, construction and demolition engineering, and bridge engineering. Kevern is currently a Senior Project Engineer at HNTB Corporation.

She is a licensed Professional Structural Engineer in Nebraska and Nevada and a Professional Engineer in Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and California. She volunteers with the American Society of Civil Engineers and with a variety of

STEM education outreach events for school-aged children, with a particular focus on introducing girls to STEM. Kevern also serves on UW-Platteville’s Civil Engineering Advisory Board.

Distinguished Alumni George L. Ochs graduated from UW-Platteville in 1969 with a degree in civil engineering. In 1980, he founded a real estate development consulting firm in Denver, Colorado. He continued a successful career in real estate, holding leadership positions at Prudential Insurance, JP Morgan, Western National Group, and Cityview.

“Upon reflection, both the City of Platteville as well as the university proved to be pivotal towards moving my young life forward in a positive direction,” said Ochs. “I recall arriving in Platteville via Greyhound bus on the Saturday night before the fall semester began, and was picked up by a local who delivered me and my luggage to the newly built Wilgus Hall. What a welcome by the local community. Upon graduation from UW-Platteville, I was immediately employed in my field, which was exactly what was necessary for me to move forward into my adult life and career. My time at UW-Platteville was far more than an education, it was a well-organized, gracious, and well thought out roadmap towards my transition into adulthood as well as a professional career.”

Distinguished Alumni Gary J. Goldberg graduated from UW-Platteville in 1981 with a degree in mining engineering. He is a Director of BHP, one of the world’s top producers of iron ore, metallurgical coal, and copper, with substantial interests in oil and gas. He also serves on the board’s Remuneration, Sustainability, and Nomination and Governance Committees.

“My UW-Platteville education laid the foundation for my success by helping me develop the critical thinking and interpersonal skills necessary to tackle challenges, capture opportunities, and generate sustainable solutions,” said Goldberg. “The need to continually learn and grow throughout my career was a key life lesson I took from my experience at UW-Platteville.”

Todd Johnson graduated in 1981 with a degree in individually contracted engineering management. He is Chairman and CEO of Capstan Corporation, a third-generation family business he has helped lead for 40 years. Headquartered in Duluth, Minnesota, Capstan Corporation is a holding company which focuses on acquiring and growing businesses in a variety of industries, including construction, ship building, plastics, energy, banking, and more.

“My education at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville prepared me very well to assume a wide variety of business responsibilities and challenges, throughout my 40-year career,” said Johnson. “No one knows what journey lies before them as they graduate, but being prepared is a great start. My career has been very challenging and rewarding.

The rigor and depth that UW-Platteville expected from me in my studies made a huge difference in my lifetime successes.”

Douglas A. Weirauch, Jr. graduated from UW-Platteville in 1972, with degrees in geology and mathematics.

His career includes 35 years of industrial research and development experience in materials science and engineering at Owens/Corning Fiberglass Corporation; Alcoa, Inc.; and the Carborundum Company. This experience includes the processing and properties of glasses, technical ceramics, aluminum refractories, the evolution of continuously-cast aluminum surfaces, and the electrolytic smelting of aluminum. His career has included authoring over 250 proprietary reports, publishing 36 technical papers, writing two book chapters, and being cited as inventor on 17 U.S. patents.

“UW-Platteville provided a solid educational foundation for a long and productive career in science and engineering,” said Weirauch.

U

niversity of Wisconsin-Platteville alumna Morgan Hartman, a 2018 industrial engineering graduate, credits her experience as a student-athlete with giving her the tools to become a Marketing Engineer for centrifugal watercooled chillers at Trane Technologies in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Hartman describes her position as a multi-faceted role where she provides pre-sale support, meets with customers, and helps the sales force team strategize and understand the market.

“A lot of the things I learned at UW-Platteville I carry into my position,” said Hartman, a former captain of the women’s basketball team. “I interact with customers quite often. I have confidence in what I know—I learned that from UW-Platteville coaches, teammates, faculty and staff. Where I’m at now is because of what I gained though my experiences at UW-Platteville. I’m grateful for the opportunities that were provided to me.”

Hartman, who has been with Trane Technologies since 2018, now attends the UW-Platteville career fairs as an industry representative. She recalls how valuable the experience was for her as an undergraduate student, along with her senior design project and internship.

“To have those experiences in my pocket to enhance my resume is something I now look at as an employer looking for employees,” said Hartman.

“There is a lot of talent at UW-Platteville.

We see that at Trane. It’s important for students to be involved and boost their resumes with Morgan Hartman internships and co-ops. You can always learn something from every opportunity you are given.”

As Hartman reflects on her collegiate journey, she’s thankful for the handson opportunities and the relationships she was able to build with instructors.

Hartman was introduced to Trane Technologies through her professors and was able to meet company employers at the Women in STEM Banquet.

“I will be forever grateful for that opportunity,” said Hartman. “To be able to meet with industry representatives and talk to them about opportunities at Trane.

One thing led to another, and I was hired within a week. I’m fortunate to work for a company that has exceptional leadership and a collaborative team environment.”

Even now, Hartman still hears from her professors. “It shows the type of staff UW-Platteville has and the care the faculty have for their students. They want you to be successful,” she said. “The academic experience was second to none.”

Dylan LaMere Scholarship

T

he University of WisconsinPlatteville Foundation announced the establishment of a new scholarship fund in memory of Dylan LaMere, a UW-Platteville senior who passed away in April 2021.

“Dylan had a positive impact on all,” said Dylan’s mother, Brenda LaMere. “When he walked into a room people knew it. His bright smile and distinctive laugh were contagious.

Dylan’s genuinely kind, helpful, and positive soul exemplified who he was as a person. His hard work and determination were noted, whether on the football or lacrosse fields, within his academics, or at any of his numerous jobs. This scholarship is a way to carry on Dylan’s legacy as a Pioneer forever.”

The Dylan LaMere Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to continuing mechanical engineering students who are Wisconsin residents with a GPA of at least 3.0. To give to this scholarship, please use the QR code below:
