Cybersecurity accelerator set for Oxbow Center HEADLINES

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise announced plans on Thursday, July 14, to establish a cybersecurity accelerator in the Oxbow Center to house faculty, students and corporate researchers working to develop software for the world’s fastest growing technology sector. In addition, UVa-Wise plans to use a portion of the building as an ecological center to bridge environmental education and economic development efforts by serving as a hub for environmental education. The UVa-Wise Foundation took ownership of the Oxbow Center in St. Paul, Virginia when the Oxbow Corporation transferred the building to the College. The facility has served a variety of health care and human services organizations since the 1990s. Regional leaders gathered at the facility as the Oxbow Foundation officially handed the keys to the UVa-Wise Foundation. “This is a significant gift that will contribute not just to UVa-Wise but to our region as a whole as we continue to distinguish ourselves as an innovative, technology-friendly, entrepreneurial corner of the Commonwealth,” UVaWise Chancellor Donna P. Henry said. Henry said the College is working with MACH37TM, a premier

cybersecurity accelerator from Herndon, Virginia, on the project. Henry said UVa-Wise is negotiating with technology start-up companies to bring those businesses to the region. “We in Southwest Virginia are strategically placed to attract high-tech employers to the region,” Henry said. The College’s software engineering program, the only undergraduate software engineering program in Virginia, will accommodate the growing cybersecurity industry, Henry explained. UVa-Wise will expand its computer science and software engineering programs to include more faculty with cybersecurity expertise and expand coursework in information security. “Adding a cybersecurity component to the UVa-Wise technology programs will increase their prominence and translate into increased enrollment,” Henry said. Henry said the region’s productive and highly trainable workforce and the quality of life in the region are attractive to emerging companies. The region’s rich culture and abundant outdoor recreational activities are attractive to today’s high-tech employees, she added. “Southwest Virginia offers a peaceful, awe-inspiring landscape and a creative culture that is very attractive to the lifestyles and work culture of that

particular workforce,” Henry said. Shannon Blevins, associate vice chancellor for economic development and engagement at UVa-Wise, said the region’s redundant electrical and internet backbone are also attractive to technology companies. According to Blevins, the previous and future investments in broadband fiber network create a critical and attractive infrastructure for companies that rely on the internet for continuous operations. The Oxbow announcement came on the heels of a major announcement from the White House in June that UVa-Wise has been selected as a partner in an initiative to develop and expand ecosystems of high quality IT talent in rural America. “There are many wonderful things underway in our region, at the College and in St. Paul,” Henry said. “We are so pleased to be a part of a resurgence of the St. Paul community.” Kenneth Holbrook, St. Paul’s vice mayor, said town leaders are pleased that UVa-Wise has a plan for the building. “It’s going to be nice seeing this beautiful building come back to life again,” Holbrook said. Plans are moving forward on the project and the College continues to work with governmental and industry leaders on the accelerator.

‘This is what matters’

Donna Hale ’ 71 is a true educator. A visit to her Smiddy Hall office leaves no doubt that the Council, Virginia native answered a strong call to sit behind the biggest desk in a classroom. Her office walls display photographs she took at UVa-Wise sporting events, including of “The Play” that captured an unbelievable football win over Emory & Henry College, autographed posters of Cavalier teams over the years,

special notes from students and other memorabilia of her time on campus. Her desk is covered with news clippings of former high school students who now enjoy successful careers. She can point to their photos and proudly tell visitors where those former students are working. The Buck Henson Award, given by students, is also on prominent display. “This is me,” she said as she looked around her workplace. “This is who I am. This is what matters to me. All of this is from my students.” Her dedication to education was noticed. She was recently honored when an anonymous benefactor created a scholarship in her name. The scholarship is for Buchanan County students, which is fitting since Hale fondly recalls getting help from her teachers over the years. Hale is a product of a hardworking family in the Council community of Buchanan County, Virginia. Her parents farmed for a living and opened a small country store to make ends meet. Her parents saved to build their own home and never entertained the thought of going into debt to do so. They had cash in hand before the first nail was hammered. They did not go to college. “I’m a first generation college student,” Hale said. She did well in school and graduated at 16 years old. A gruff but caring principal would not let her take typing class because he wanted her to take college preparation courses. Hale laughs when she recalls needing keyboarding skills each day of her life, but she has no real regrets. The principal cared about her academic career. The subject of college came up when a teacher at Council High told her about Clinch Valley College in Wise and said she might like the campus. The teen arrived in Wise and started classes. Professor Dick Davidson was her advisor, and she landed a spot as a student assistant for legendary Professor Buck Henson. She graduated with a history degree. There was never a doubt that she would end up in the classroom. She did her student teaching at Appalachia High and taught Tom Turner, who

eventually landed in the Virginia Hall of Fame for his football-coaching career. She was 20 when she landed her first teaching job at Council High, barely older than the students she taught. She coached mock trial teams, attended sporting events and other school activities to support the students, and she was a pioneer in teaching advanced placement courses via television broadcast. She missed an Eagles farewell concert so she could watch a student score his 1,000th point in basketball. Hale stayed at Council High until retirement 33 years later, but she soon grew bored. She decided to get a master’s degree in Criminal Justice from Radford University. She had to write an essay explaining what she was going to do with her graduate degree. She wrote that she was going to do “absolutely nothing” with her degree because she was doing it for fun. She was accepted and earned her master’s degree. It turned out that she did not get the degree just for fun. She landed a job at her alma mater, now called UVaWise, in 2007 and she has nurtured her students on campus for several years. Her dedication to teaching and to guiding students through the academic world is why the anonymous donor created the Donna Hale Scholarship Fund. The funds are awarded on merit first and need second. It was established in 2015, and it benefits students from Buchanan County. Hale was astonished and deeply touched by the scholarship. “I graduated with hardly any debt, and I’m glad that this will help give Buchanan County students the same chance that I was given,” she said. “This is the nicest thing that has been done for me. I can’t imagine anything better than someone actually creating a scholarship in my name to benefit students from my county.” She sums up her career in just a few words. “You just need to find what you want to do in life, and I found it the first day I walked into a classroom.”

Rosebud Smiddy Garden dedicated A large crowd gathered in a tranquil spot on the lower campus of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise to dedicate a garden in memory of a lifelong educator and wife of the school’s first chancellor. The Rosebud Smiddy Garden, located between the library and the Chapel of All Faiths, was first created in the late 1980s by members of the American Association of University Women in honor of Rosebud Stickley Smiddy. The McGlothlin Foundation provided funding. A vigorous construction phase at the College temporarily disrupted the garden for several years. Completion of the College’s six-story library made it possible for the garden to once again thrive. Brenda Edwards, an AAUW member and friend of the late educator, recalled how Mrs. Smiddy helped her make Wise home when she moved to the area in the late 1960s. “As I got to know this special lady and saw how contented and happy she was living such a full and rich life in this little town of Wise, I knew I could do it also,” Edwards said. “She entertained with the grace and charm of a first lady. She was kind to everyone and was beautiful inside and outside.”

4 UVa-Wise Magazine

On behalf of the AAUW, Edwards encouraged the public to use the garden that is now a tribute to Mrs. Smiddy’s amazing life. “Hopefully, those who spend time here will feel the peace and joy that her spirit brings to this garden and know that this is a special place on this campus,” Edwards added. Mrs. Smiddy, a devoted teacher who began her career before World War II in a two-room schoolhouse in Lee County’s Rose Hill, passed away in 1984. “I did not have the pleasure or the honor of knowing Mrs. Smiddy, but I know she is remembered fondly, and that is an understatement,” said Chancellor Donna P. Henry. “She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and teacher.” Henry noted that Mrs. Smiddy is remembered for her elegance, class and grace. “This garden, placed strategically at the center of our campus, near this magnificent new library, which itself represents hope and light, demonstrates the great legacy of Mrs. Smiddy,” Henry said. “She worked tirelessly to advance the education and welfare of everyone.” Marcia Adams Gilliam, chair of the UVa-Wise College

Board and a member of the Class of 1982, said Mrs. Smiddy was her second grade teacher at Norton Elementary. “There is nothing more revered at our great College than excellence in teaching,” Gilliam said. “Our students deserve nothing short of dedicated and capable teachers, and when they come to UVa-Wise, that’s precisely what they get.” Gilliam said Mrs. Smiddy valued education and taught her pupils to love school. “She shared this sentiment with Chancellor Smiddy and with the faculty at UVa-Wise,” Gilliam said. “All of them teachers, they shared a love for the noble task of teaching, of equipping students with the knowledge and skills to lead a meaningful life.” Speaking on behalf of the Smiddy family, Dr. Joe Frank Smiddy recalled how his mother had special eyes that enabled her to see what many others could not see. “She would see hunger and she would see needs,” Smiddy said, adding that she worked hard to meet the needs of the children she taught. “Papa was finding them a way to go to college. Mother was finding them what they needed.” “She had a beautiful voice to read to children,” Smiddy said. “She could make those pages come alive.” Smiddy asked the crowd to remember that his mother would want them to find their own way around life, plant their own flowers, and read to a child. The Rosebud Smiddy Garden is open to the public.

SHELF EXPRESSIONS

A glimpse of the treasures and trinkets found in faculty and staff offices

PHILOSOPHER’S PORTRAIT

SHELF EXPRESSIONS

Anthony Cashio, assistant professor of philosophy, has many items in his office that tell a story, but a painting he bought in Taiwan while on a study abroad trip has generated quite a tale that only a philosopher can tell. The painting is a portrait of an old man smoking a hand rolled cigarette. His face is deeply wrinkled and his eyes are wise. The study abroad trip involved lessons on social justice issues, and Cashio said the experience, and the painting, set his path toward thinking. “Someone painted it, and I bought it,” he said. “It was too big to transport back in its frame so the man broke it off the frame and rolled it up for me. My wife had it framed for me a couple of years ago. It’s my philosophical muse.” Cashio named the old guy Eros after the Greek word for love. Plato’s Symposium includes a passage that asks what love is, and his answer is, of course, complicated. According to Cashio, Eros is born of poverty and resource. Eros will always find a way, but teeters between wisdom and ignorance. In other words, Eros is a philosopher. “He doesn’t have everything he wants, but he knows how to seek it,” Cashio said as he points to the portrait. “This guy is crafty. He knows how to get what he wants. This is what it’s like to be a philosopher.” Cashio is reminded of the idea of philosophy when he looks at the portrait. It reminds him that it is possible that a single class can change a student’s life. He won’t say that the classes he teaches change lives, even when the odds are that his work as an instructor has transformed some of his students. He does admit that philosophy classes changed his own life. It was in philosophy classes that he began to ask questions as a student. Each question led to another and then another. “I just can’t stop,” he said. “I keep doing it and doing it. It is important and energizing. It is something that I don’t

6 UVa-Wise Magazine

mind doing every day.” It is no surprise that he now teaches philosophy, and he enjoys each minute of it. He tells his students about the painting of the man he calls Eros, and whether they realize it or not, they are getting a subtle philosophy lesson in the process. When not in the classroom, Cashio enjoys spending time with his wife, Miranda, and their children Chapel and Madeline. They enjoy hiking, camping and enjoying the many things Southwest Virginia offers. The couple moved to the area about three years ago.

The torch has passed Each day when she arrives at her office in the Resource Center, Debbie Vanover glances at a torch that her friend and former coworker Rev. Sandra Jones crafted and presented to her at the conclusion of last year’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration at Wise Baptist Church. The torch, decorated in pure Sandra Jones style, is a constant reminder of the responsibility that goes with organizing the popular celebration of the life of the iconic

Civil Rights leader. Jones, who retired last year, passed the torch to Vanover to carry on the important work of the Black History Month Committee. The torch reminds Vanover, who works in Human Resources, of the importance of holding events to remember the nation’s worrisome history so it is never repeated. “It is a big, scary responsibility,” Vanover said. “The program has been in place for 20 years. There is a legacy there, and it terrifies me to be honest.” Vanover said Jones has a strength that made people want to work hard to make the events related to Black History Month successful. When asked what her own strengths are, she said her smile goes a long way, and so does her tolerance and understanding for others. She also does not take herself too seriously, and she considers that a good strength. She put those strengths to good use last Jan. 18 at the MLK Celebration. Dozens of people from campus and the community joined together in the spiritual

celebration. It had an impact on Vanover. “There were a lot of emotions,” she said. “It was awesome to see the community and the campus gathered for the same purpose. It is promising to see people who want to continue to make things better for all people, regardless of race or religion. Civil rights are civil rights, regardless of who or what you are.” Vanover was buoyed to see so many people work behind the scenes to make Black History Month a success. She gives full credit to the committee and downplays her role in the events. “To see people behind the scenes that have a hand is wonderful,” she said. “People in the town, the performers, police, the speakers and the churches are

amazing. They all work hard and provide support without even thinking twice about it. They ask to be a part of it all.” When the event was over, Vanover and the committee started planning for next year’s celebration. Racism is a hot topic in the nation today, she added, which makes the committee’s work more important than ever. “You are going to see it just by turning on the TV,” she said. “It is in your face. You can’t deny it. Everybody has an unconscious bias. Not talking about it is not the answer. I hope we can get to the time where we can see people for who they are and for their actions.” Vanover is also a determined woman who does not give up. She received her degree in business administration from UVa-Wise in 2013, three decades after she took her first class. “I was on the 30 year plan,” she said. “It’s called life.” Vanover has worked at the College for 10 years, and she loves it. She feels rewarded when graduates return to campus and tell her that she made a tough day better for them in some small way. “You really have to love what you do or see a purpose in what you do in order to do it,” she said. “I feel so rewarded.” On those tough days when the shadow of responsibility lurks, Vanover only needs to look at her torch to brighten her outlook on life. The torch for Black History Month has officially been passed.

UVa-Wise dedicates John T. Casteen Plaza

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise dedicated the plaza of its new $37 million library in honor of John T. Casteen III, the University of Virginia president emeritus who strengthened ties between the two schools and helped guide tremendous enrollment and facilities growth at the Wise campus. “Mr. Casteen has left an indelible mark on UVa-Wise,” Chancellor Donna P. Henry said. “Members of this community can say emphatically that John T. Casteen has always stood with and for the college.” The dedication, which took place on Nov. 2, was attended by Casteen, several former UVA-Wise chancellors, current UVA President Teresa A. Sullivan, other leaders from UVA and its College at Wise, and a crowd from campus and the local community. John T. Casteen III “will forever be known as the college’s greatest protector,” former UVa-Wise Chancellor Jay Lemons said. Henry said the open space at the 8 UVa-Wise Magazine

library’s fourth floor main entrance would serve as a gathering place for those who come together to explore common interests and share new ideas. “I hope that this plaza adequately reflects Mr. Casteen’s love for learning, his love of the arts and his love of community,” Henry said. Sullivan said naming the library entrance in honor of Casteen, UVA’s president from 1990 until 2010, is appropriate because of his long service to the University and his steadfast support for the University’s libraries and for UVa-Wise. “During his two decades as UVA president, he strengthened the relationship between the University in Charlottesville and the College in Wise,” Sullivan said. “He understood the importance of this college to the people here and to the region of Southwest Virginia, and he appreciated the deep bonds that have connected UVA to the College for more than a half-century.” Sullivan told the crowd that the College at Wise experienced remarkable

growth during Casteen’s presidency, and that he was “a steady hand” during leadership transitions. John Macfarlane, a UVA Board of Visitors member and chair of the Committee on UVa-Wise, called Casteen a visionary leader who is dedicated to advancing higher education throughout Virginia. “John made the success of Wise a priority,” Macfarlane said. “The buildings and grounds, as well as the people around us, are his legacy. He believed in the mission of the college and in the value which it creates not only for southwest Virginians, but for all Virginians.” Jay Lemons, a former UVa-Wise chancellor, said it is easy to see the

handiwork of Casteen across the campus. He said Casteen first visited the region in his early 20s, and never forgot the region. Casteen stood with the college in difficult times, Lemons added. “He will forever be known as the college’s greatest protector,” said Lemons, currently president of Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania. In his remarks, Casteen expressed thanks to those attending, spoke of the College at Wise’s history and offered thoughts for the school’s future and its relationship with the University. “Maybe someday times will change, but my own aspiration is, at least in my time and our time, the relationship continues to be vigorous and productive,” he said. “The college continues to be the stepping point to personal futures for the young men and the young women who continue to come here year after year.” He praised Sullivan and Henry for working together to find ways to articulate the vision for UVa-Wise in today’s time.

ABOUT JOHN T. CASTEEN III John T. Casteen III served as the seventh president of the University of Virginia from 1990 to 2010. An alumnus of the University, he passionately believed in the mission of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise as a public, liberal arts college serving the region of Southwest Virginia. Mr. Casteen guided the work of seven chancellors, nurturing and strengthening ties between the College and the University. Mr. Casteen’s support for the College propelled its growth, which transformed the campus. A vocal advocate and champion of economic development and education, he fostered collaboration with the University to help the region and its citizens. Under his bold and tireless leadership, the name of the College was changed in 1999 to better reflect its relationship with the University of Virginia.

HOMECOMING

Homecoming 2016 was a scorcher, and not just at the football game

The day began with an alumni basketball game in memory of Rick Brown, an alumnus who lost his life saving his three daughters from drowning in North Carolina. More than 20 former basketball players participated in the game. A scholarship fund is in the works in memory of Brown and the heroic life he led.

The day continued at the library with tours of the new $37 million facility. The Alumni Art Show was also a popular attraction for those visiting the six-story library. The Lawn by the Lake was the site of the annual family picnic and carnival, an event enjoyed, despite hot temperatures, by all ages. Inflatables, games, good food, fellowship and overall fun as Cavs fans awaited the big game between the Highland Cavaliers and Glenville State. Grills were fired up in the upper parking lot of Carl Smith Stadium as tailgate parties took place before and during the game. Smiddy, the lovable Highland Cavalier mascot, made an appearance as well to check out the delicious meals that fans had cooked under the tents. The stands at Carl Smith Stadium were filled as the Cavaliers took Beaty-Richmond Field for kickoff.Â

Library opens with big celebration A large crowd of students, faculty, staff, alumni and others gathered on Tuesday, Aug. 23, to officially open the new $37 million library at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise. The six-floor facility, built in the center of campus, includes 24-hour study space, a new coffee shop, significantly more books and other holdings than the previous library, and a new writing center. The library was funded by the state of Virginia as part of a capital bond referendum. “Our new library is impressive day and night, from the inside and out, but it is never more breathtaking than in the evening when its lights seem to illuminate the whole campus,” Chancellor Donna P. Henry said. “It fills passersby with wonder and awe, and that is exactly what we hope it will inspire in our students.” The library, which was built into a mountainside, took unrelenting vision, willpower, creativity and fortitude to complete, Henry told the crowd. The library is the third in the College’s history. The first was housed in Crockett Hall, but was moved to Zehmer Hall in 1959. The library was moved to a new building in 1969 when the former library was opened. Students, faculty and staff carried the books to their new homes during the first library moves. The College reenacted the book brigade on Tuesday by moving some books to the new library. Some of the original members of the two earlier book brigades participated in Tuesday’s event.

UVA President Teresa A. Sullivan also participated in the ribbon cutting. University Librarian John Unsworth was also part of the celebration. “This new library is yet another product of the strong and productive relationship between UVA in Charlottesville and the College at Wise,” Sullivan said. “The library is the heart and soul of any institution of higher education. It’s a symbol of the power of knowledge that students acquire.” Josi Stidham, the student member of the UVa-Wise College Board, said the library would make a difference in students’ lives. “Not only will our library promote scholarship, but it will also elevate our college to a place of distinction equivalent or even surpassing other colleges and universities, and is without a doubt a source of pride,” she said.

Transformational opportunities plentiful at UVa-Wise UVa-Wise students have opportunities to study abroad, immerse themselves in undergraduate research and expand their overall educational experience through a variety of experiential learning ventures. Those who embrace the unique opportunities often say their lives were transformed and enriched in numerous ways. The experiential learning takes place in programs such as the Fellowship in the Natural Sciences, Summer Scholars, International Study and the University of Virginia’s Global Health Fellowship. Students who participate enjoy fieldwork, research activities and learn how to view other cultures with an understanding lens. Bailey Helbert, a Coeburn, Virginia resident, was a Global Scholar who traveled

The mathematics major worked with faculty advisor James Vance to collect and analyze 1,837 road kill samples. Smith examined patterns and factors that led to the demise of the animals, and she is still studying ways to mitigate the number of animal deaths. She is studying whether there is statistical proof of clustering in specific areas of the roadway or if the animal deaths are random. “It opened up a new world of spatial analysis for me,” Smith said. “I learned different research skills and how to analyze data. It opened my mind. My plan was to get a master’s degree in mathematics, but now I

She notes that the research was important because St. Kitts did not have cable television until the late 1970s, and a huge difference in health could be documented. Helbert said the knowledge that her research and the work that her fellow Global Scholars completed was sent to a government health federation for review and for action made her realize that she had made a difference. “I learned so much about hospitality,” she said. “They were some of the warmest people I’ve ever met. He conversed with German tourists and saw how vital it is to communicate with others who share a different culture and tongue. He also noticed an uptick in nationalism in Ireland as he visited places he had only read about in textbooks. “It was a new experience for me,” Powers said. “I had read books in the classroom on nationalism, but I got to see the trends there. UVa-Wise names Boyd alumni director

DEVELOPMENT

Benefactor of the Year

BENEFACTORS

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise named the estate of Nancy Rose Pulaski Benefactor of the Year. Pulaski, a native of Brooklyn, New York, was a professional child model who graduated from St. Agnes Seminary and later earned her bachelor’s degree from New York State. “She had a fierce passion for geology and gemology and believed there was no such thing as a plain old rock,” Bob Bragg, UVa-Wise vice chancellor for development and college relations, said when announcing the award at the annual Benefactor’s Celebration on Oct. 8. Her vast mineral collection is now housed at the South Carolina State Museum. She worked with Morgan Stanley, owned a catering business, and enjoyed a career as gemologist for Christopher’s Fine Jewelers of Pawley’s Island. She traveled throughout the United States, Europe and South America. “Nancy’s only connection to UVa-Wise was that her family roots were in the region and she came to Wise for family reunions,” Bragg said. “She reached out to College officials in 2011 seeking information about the process to establish a scholarship.” Pulaski planned to use her estate to endow a scholarship fund but decided two years ago to do it earlier so she could enjoy its impact. She passed away this year. The remainder of her estate will be added to the Starnes-Thompson Scholarship Fund, which was established as a tribute to her late husband, Mel Klein. “Nancy’s foresight and generosity will help an incredibly large number of future students to pursue their dreams,” Bragg said.

Volunteer of the Year 2016 The University of Virginia’s College at Wise has named key leaders of the John I. Burton High School Class of 1956 its Volunteer of the Year. The award was given to five leaders of the group during the Oct. 8 Benefactor’s Celebration. The leaders include Teresa Ammon, Dotti Chittester, John Fulton, Charles Henderson and Preston “P.D.” Miller. In 2006, as the Class of 1956 held its 50th class reunion, the members discussed leaving a legacy to help Burton students. The group began raising money to establish an endowed fund at UVa-Wise. “They have reconnected with classmates and have garnered significant support from a number of folks,” said Bob Bragg, vice chancellor for development and college relations. “They are now a significant part of the UVa-Wise story.” The group inspired others to establish endowed funds, and those funds are critical in attracting and retaining worthy and deserving students. The Class of 1956 ended the evening by making Chancellor Donna P. Henry an honorary member of the class.

Jennifer Bailey ’86 and her husband, Greg, make it look easy

ST. PAUL BREWERY

as they glide from table to table for a friendly chat with the patrons of Sugar Hill Brewing in St. Paul, Virginia. The Baileys have a way of warmly welcoming each visitor to their new downtown establishment, and they have sharpened their listening skills to truly learn more about their customers and what brings them to the small town that straddles both Wise and Russell counties. The mix of atmosphere, quality brew, tasty food and the personal touch seems to work. First time visitors have turned into regular customers, and the social media world has helped the Baileys reach all of Southwest Virginia and a big chunk of Northeast Tennessee.

While things may look easy, the Baileys display the reality of hard work when they recall the difficult journey of entering the restaurant and brewery business. Jennifer, who earned a business and public administration degree with a concentration in accounting and financial management at UVa-Wise, settled in at a booth before sharing the story of the brewery’s beginning. It all began when the Baileys purchased a hardware store in 2009 in the town that was just beginning a revitalization effort to boost business and overall quality of life. They eventually bought another building and moved the hardware store to that location. The hardware store was not doing as well as the couple had hoped, but the six apartments they had upstairs were thriving as rental properties. Their plans changed once more when Spearhead Trails, a popular ATV route, opened in town.

“We decided to change rental properties to short-term stays,” Jennifer explained. “We remodeled and opened in October 2013.” The Baileys had just done something remarkable in St. Paul. Their short-term rental properties produced the first lodging tax the town had seen in 40 years. The couple, as is their nature, listened to their rental customers and learned that they were always looking for local places to eat, and most of them wanted to know where they could go for a beer after a long day on Spearhead Trails. They always told the visitors about a limited number of local eateries, but recognized the question about where to enjoy a beer was never fully addressed. “Our son, who was 22 at the time, told us he’d been experimenting with home brewing, and he said that we should do that in St. Paul,” Jennifer said. “We had heard it could cost about $30,000, and we decided that we would try it in the basement of our building.” The Baileys were going to help their son and his friends with the business venture. The youngsters lost interest. The Baileys, selfprofessed lifelong learners, did not. They began a period of research and number crunching and came to the startling realization that

$30,000 was just a drop in the beer mug. “We found out that it would take about $500,000 to get started,” she said. “We looked for funding and worked through the Ninth District Development Fund through People Incorporated. We did a business plan and closed the loan with People Incorporated in September 2015.” The Baileys began moving the hardware store to the rear of the building to make room for the brewery. They wanted the shiny equipment to be visible to the public from the street level windows. It was then the Baileys entered the tangled world of permits, licenses and fire marshal regulations. They ended up building a firewall between the hardware store and the brewery, and they hired a general manager to set up a kitchen. They had to get the kitchen up and running before they could get a brewery license. “We were really just feeling our way along,” she said. “We started construction and it took seven months to complete.” It also took seven months to get the equipment to brew the beer. Greg recalls the constant battle to get the equipment delivered and then installed. They hired an experienced head brewer in January 2016. They purchased tables and booths from former restaurants in the region, and Greg crafted a bar from wood from the Congo.

Fall/Winter 2016 25

“We didn’t even know all the permits we needed,” Jennifer said. When the time was right for a soft opening, the brewery had not received its Virginia Alcohol and Beverage Control permit. They scrambled to get the permit in place, and they said the ABC staff in Abingdon was extremely helpful. “We got the permit in the nick of time,” she said. It was only when they opened in September 2016 that the Baileys realized their hard work would pay off. “I walked in, looked around, and said this is better than I imagined it would be,” Jennifer said. “Once we opened and people were excited about it, I felt more at ease. We are getting such a good response from the public. People are saying that it seems very much like Asheville, and we take that as a compliment.” The couple is aware that opening a brewery in a small town often brings some criticism, but they agree that the region has changed over the years as more and more people recognize the need to diversify the economy and move forward. The Baileys decided to be sensitive to the community as well by closing at 10 p.m. and by nurturing a family atmosphere. Children get free ice cream and enjoy a spirited game of pinball or foosball. They also have advice for others who are considering starting their own business. “Look for opportunity, not necessarily what you desire,” Greg said. “Look to see what is needed and then do it,” Jennifer added. “If you do that and work hard, it will become your passion. Both urged would-be entrepreneurs to not give in to crippling fear. “You can’t just focus on the fear,”she said. You have to work to get where you are.” The Baileys are enjoying where they are, and they are pleased they made a bold move. 26 26 UVa-Wise UVa-Wise Magazine Magazine

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise campus has a series of

walking and hiking trails that weave though its quiet forests, but outdoor enthusiasts have only recently discovered the pathways. The trails had been maintained mostly on a volunteer basis by a dedicated group of faculty and staff, and some professors have used the trail system for academic purposes for many years. However, there was no true map of the trails for the average nature lover to use to enjoy a short stroll or a longer hike. An effort to map the trails and encourage the campus and the region to use the hiking area has been successful. A new map (which is included in the centerfold of this issue of the UVa-Wise Magazine) is available. “We’ve noticed over the past few years that the area behind campus has started seeing a large uptick in use by both the College and the surrounding community,” said Professor Wally Smith. “Multiple classes are now using the trails for field instruction, and several students have performed work through the Fellowship In Natural Science or independent studies in recent years.” The cross-country team has used the trails for training and the community is now finding the joys of having an accessible trail system close to home. “All of this has been the result of a huge amount of volunteer effort - mostly thanks to Phil Shelton, Don Leech and alumnus Tyler Morris - that has improved the trail system in the past couple of years,” Smith said. “With all this taken into account, it seemed like the time was right to formalize what opportunities exist in that part of campus.” Smith gives credit to Margie Tomann, head of the Healthy Appalachia Institute, for working to get the map project moving. “Healthy Appalachia Institute is committed to improving health outcomes in Southwest Virginia and much of our work is done off campus in communities throughout the region,” Tomann said. “I believe it is important that we also work to support UVa-Wise as a leader in public health education, research and practice.” Tomann believes the trail system highlights the beauty of the campus and creates opportunities for increased physical activity and outdoor recreation. “We hope people will take advantage of the trails to improve their own health and respect the trails, keeping them clean and well maintained for other users,” Tomann added. “It is just one step in making the healthy choice the easy choice for people who live, learn, work and play at UVa-Wise.” Smith believes the trail system will act as a bridge between the College and the community. “We have one of the only places in or directly adjacent to the town of Wise that has public land with trails available for outdoor recreation, and that makes us a crucial part of the town’s quality of life,” Smith said. Smith believes the strides made in the past five years to transform the area behind campus into a living laboratory for biodiversity studies and restoring native Appalachian ecosystems will give those who use the trails a place to learn while they enjoy the outdoors. “It’s a perfect blend of education, service to the community and improving the quality of life in our area,” Smith said.

ATHLETICS

Golf team wins MEC championship

Prior to this year’s Mountain East Conference Championship at The Resort at Glade Springs, UVaWise had never finished higher than eighth in the event. This season, the Cavaliers had failed to finish higher than fifth in any of their first three tournaments. Those facts went out the window as UVa-Wise shot a 297 in the final round of the MEC Conference Championship to overcome a six-stroke deficit and rally for the league title. The Cavaliers finished with a three-day total of 905 as the program claimed its first ever conference championship. The improbable victory was even more impressive when you factor in Head Coach David Harvey’s team was picked 10th out of 12 teams in the Preseason MEC Coaches Poll and stood in fifth place after day two of the event. With the championship, the program will become the first athletic team at the College to play in a NCAA Division II regional. Additionally, they are just the second program to earn a MEC title and the first male sport to accomplish the feat. 30 UVa-Wise Magazine

Three of Harvey’s golfers finished the event in the top 10 with freshman Alex Arnold finishing in a tie for first with a three-day total of 222. The Wytheville native would end up finishing runner-up for medalist honors as Wheeling Jesuit’s Nolan Tisch birdied a sudden death playoff hole to break the tie. Arnold opened the tournament with a -2 performance on the par 70, 7,151 yards course. The former George Wythe High School star responded with two more rounds in the 70’s, including a 73 on the final day to tie for medalist honors. Sophomore Jacob Smith continued his strong season by firing a 225 for the event. The Strasburg native shot a 76 on day one before shooting a 74 and 75 on consecutive days to be the next highest finishing Cavalier. Springfield’s Andrew Johnson was third Cav to finish inside the top 10. The freshman shaved four strokes off his day two score of 79 to finish the event +12 at 228. Cody Large rounded out a quartet of UVa-Wise golfers in the top 25. The junior from Wise had back-to-back

rounds of 81 on the first two days en route to a 237 for the tournament and a 24th place finish. After struggling the first two days, senior Nick England rebounded to finish inside the top 30. The senior from Wise shot an 81 on day one before finishing with an 86 on day two. He finished the event by tying for the second lowest round score of any Cav in the event with a 74 to finish in 29th. The 297 UVa-Wise shot on day three was the lowest round score of any school in the tournament and was nine strokes ahead of any other school’s performance in the final round of the event. The University of Charleston finished second in the event three strokes off the pace while West Liberty University came in third with a score of 918. Overall, Cav golfers turned in eight rounds of +3 or better, Arnold finished the tournament at +6. In the spring, UVa-Wise will return to Daniels, W.Va. and The Resort at Glade Springs for the NCAA Atlantic Regional in May.

SEASON OPENING FOOTBALL VICTORY Trent Martin’s 24-yard field goal sailed through the uprights in the season opener’s second overtime to give UVa-Wise a 13-10 win over Tusculum in the football opener for both schools. It was the first football game for the Cavaliers under Head Coach Dane Damron and marked the first season opening win for the program since 2012. UVa-Wise dodged numerous bullets throughout the game to force overtime at 3-3. The Cavaliers picked off four passes by Tusculum quarterback Luke Lancaster, including one by Ed Kargbo in overtime. Tusculum was also plagued by poor special teams play, Jerry Odom’s squad missed five field goal attempts in the loss. After a three-and-out by the Cavaliers with under three minutes to play, the Pioneers took over in a 3-3 game with a chance to win. Tusculum took over on their own 39-yard line and quickly moved to the UVa-Wise 32-yard line. At that point, defensive coordinator Shap Boyd’s defense answered the bell again. Alvin Enahoro and Aaron Martin trapped Pioneers’ running back Isaac Robinson behind the line of scrimmage for a 4-yard loss. Two plays later, Zachary Blair made history when the senior linebacker dropped Robinson for a yard loss to set the career tackles for loss record at 64. It was Blair’s fifth tackle for loss of the night and forced Tusculum to attempt a 52-yard gamewinning field goal. Placekicker Will Tommie’s attempt sailed wide left sending the game to overtime. After the two teams combined for just six points in four quarters of action, the offense picked up in overtime. UVa-Wise took the ball first in the untimed extra session and senior quarterback Jeremy Eubank found Carlton Griffith out of the backfield for a 15-yard gain. A play later, Griffith scored the first touchdown of the game when he ran off left tackle for the 10-yard touchdown. Martin’s PAT left the score 10-3 Cavs. The lead was short lived as Tusculum scored on its first play from scrimmage. Lancaster completed a 25-yard touchdown pass to Evan Altizer before Jose Esparza’s extra point forced a second overtime. Tusculum started with the ball on the overtime possession and quickly found the UVa-Wise defense up to the task. Ian Kemp sacked Lancaster on the opening play for a 7-yard loss only to see Kargbo intercept the quarterback on the second play of the drive, giving the ball back to the Cavs needing just a field goal to win. Griffith’s strong overtime continued as the junior caught a pass for seven yards before picking up 10 yards on a third down play to make the field goal attempt closer. After consecutive runs by Jabaaru Wright, Damron elected to try the game-winning field goal attempt on third down. The senior, Martin was true on

the kick, giving the Cavs the dramatic victory. Things started out poorly for UVa-Wise, the Cavs fumbled on their first play from scrimmage and the Pioneers recovered just 25 yards from pay dirt. It would be the first of many near misses of the night for the Pioneers. Tusculum’s drive concluded with a 41-yard missed field goal. The miss precluded the best drive of the night by either offense. UVa-Wise took over on its own 25-yard line and moved it to the Tusculum 14 before Martin booted a 31-yard field goal with 9:27 to play in the opening period. The score would remain unchanged until Tommie nailed a 41-yard field goal with 12:24 to play in the first half to tie the score at 3-3. Tommie’s field goal was set up by turnover on downs. The remainder of regulation was dominated by the defenses. UVa-Wise limited Tusculum to 106 rushing yards on 50 carries while the Cavs posted 39 rushing yards on 42 attempts. For the game, both teams averaged three yards per carry as the Pioneers were limited to 232 yards on 77 offensive plays and the Cavs registered 209 yards on 70 plays. In addition to Blair’s record setting night that included nine tackles, a sack and an interception, Kargbo and Alvin Enahoro also had career nights defensively. Both players had 10 tackles and an interception while the duo combined for 3.5 tackles for loss. Overall, UVa-Wise’s linebackers posted 44 tackles in the win as part of a 19 tackles for loss performance. The 10 points allowed were the fewest by a Cavs’ defense since an 18-10 victory of West Virginia Tech in 2013. The 13 points tie a school record for the fewest points scored in a win by the Cavs. Fall/Winter 2016 31

Men’s basketball schedule preview

ATHLETICS

After playing one of the toughest NCAA Division II schedules in the entire nation last season, the UVa-Wise men’s basketball team once again faces a similar challenge this year. Last season, the Cavaliers faced five different schools ranked in the top 25 by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). Furthermore, UVa-Wise played eight games against ranked opponents, four of those being against teams who were ranked in the top three at the time. The Cavs took on two different teams ranked No. 2 nationally and hosted then No. 1 West Liberty University in Wise. This season’s schedule looks to be no different as UVa-Wise will take the floor against six different schools who made the NCAA Tournament a year ago. Highlighted by games against 2016 NCAA Division II national runner-up Lincoln Memorial University and NCAA Tournament semifinalist West Liberty, the Cavs’ schedule features three exhibition games against formidable NCAA Division I opponents. UVa-Wise will also face 2016 NCAA Tournament qualifiers Wheeling Jesuit University, Fairmont State University, Concord University and King University this season. The Cavs opened up their 2016-17 campaign at the Earl Lloyd Classic in Institute, West Virginia, where they faced Elizabeth City State University and Virginia Union. Remaining on the road, the Cavs traveled to Jefferson City, Tennessee, for a mid-week matchup with Carson-Newman University out of the South Atlantic Conference before beginning conference play. In its Mountain East Conference opener, UVa-Wise took on University of Charleston in a road contest on Friday, Nov. 19. Two days later the Cavs hosted West Virginia State for the season’s home opener and first of 13 games played in the David J. Prior Convocation Center this school year. Following Thanksgiving week, UVa-Wise will take on Lincoln Memorial in Wise Saturday, Nov. 26.

32 UVa-Wise Magazine

The Railsplitters went 34-3 last year enroute to a national title game appearance and were the top-ranked team in the final NABC Division II poll. The Cavs will hit the road once again, this time playing six out of the next seven games away from home. Returning to league play, UVa-Wise faces West Virginia Wesleyan (Dec. 1) in Buckhannon, West Virginia, and travels to Glenville State College (Dec. 3). The Cavs take on NCAA Division I Wofford College Tuesday, Dec. 6 in Spartanburg, South Carolina, as the first of three exhibition games against Division I opponents. The Terriers, from the Southern Conference, have made the coveted NCAA Division I Tournament four times since 2010 and were threepoints shy of the second round in the 2015 tournament. The Cavs will return to Wise for their lone home game in the month of December when they play NCAA Division III Berea College on Thursday, Dec. 8. Two days later UVa-Wise visits Spartanburg, South Carolina, once again, this time to take on Division I USC Upstate in the Cavs’ second

exhibition game of the season. Hailing from the Atlantic Sun Conference, the Spartans won 24 games two seasons ago and reached the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT) second round after an A-Sun Tournament title game appearance. UVa-Wise will have eight days off from competition before visiting rival King, Sunday, Dec. 18. The Tornado went 25-7 last year and reached the NCAA Tournament after winning the Conference Carolinas regular season and tournament titles. King was ranked as high as No. 7 by the NABC last season and received top-25 votes in the final poll. Following the Christmas holidays, the Cavs wrap up their non-conference slate with the final Division I exhibition game of the season on Wednesday, Dec. 28 at Eastern Kentucky University. The Colonels, from the Ohio Valley Conference, have made eight NCAA Division I Tournament appearances, most recently in 2014 after winning the OVC Tournament. A four-game homestand welcomes the Cavs in the new year as the remainder of the MEC schedule is played after New Year’s Day. UVa-Wise will play its final

home game in the month of January on Saturday, Jan. 21 against Charleston before a pair of road contests at Shepherd (Jan. 26) and Fairmont State (Jan. 28). The Cavs will host their second four-game homestand to begin February, welcoming Glenville State (Feb. 2), West Virginia Wesleyan (Feb. 4), Wheeling Jesuit (Feb. 9) and West Liberty (Feb. 11) to the Prior Center. UVa-Wise goes to Notre Dame College (Feb. 16), Urbana University (Feb. 18) and West Virginia State (Feb. 23) for its final road trip of the season. The regular season and home finale will take place Saturday, Feb. 25 with the Cavs facing Concord on senior day. The Cavs are looking to improve upon their four wins a season ago as head coach Blake Mellinger enters his fourth year at the helm of the program. UVaWise returns five letter winners from 2015-16, in addition to bringing back a pair of players who sat out last season. The Cavs also welcome seven newcomers to this year’s squad.

Women’s basketball

UVa-Wise announced its 2016-2017 women’s basketball schedule earlier this fall. The Cavaliers will play 13 games inside the Prior Center while appearing away from home 17 times. The away slate features contests at Shippensburg University and an appearance in a Puerto Rico Tournament where the Cavaliers will face the University of Puerto Rico and the University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon in mid-December. Last season, Head Coach Kristin Kunzman’s squad compiled a 9-5 record at the Prior Center and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Mountain East Conference Tournament. This season, the Cavs will open up play at Shippensburg University on Nov. 11 in a PSAC – MEC Conference Challenge. Less than 24 hours later, UVa-Wise will play its second Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference foe when the team squares off with Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The home portion of the year begins on Nov. 16 when Winston-Salem State University visits Wise. Last season, the Cavs knocked off the Rams 66-55 as part of a 2-0 start to the year. UVa-Wise will play a pair of league games in November as the team visits the University of Charleston on Nov. 19 and entertains West Virginia Wesleyan College on Nov. 30. The final league game of 2016 will take place on Dec. 3 when the team visits Glenville State College. The remainder of the early season schedule will take place away from Wise. UVa-Wise visits King University on Dec. 7 before traveling to Puerto Rico for two games on Dec. 17 and Dec. 18. Fans can celebrate New Year’s Eve inside the Prior Center when Lees-McRae College is in town for a noon tip to wrap up the non-conference portion of the schedule. The Lees-McRae game will be the first of five consecutive home games for Kunzman’s crew as the team begins a stretch of 18 consecutive conference games to wrap up the season. The 2017 MEC Conference Tournament is set for March 1 – 5 at the Charleston Civic Center. Ten of the league’s 12 teams will qualify for the event with the top six teams receiving a bye.

Class of 1956 and Class of 1966 Reunion The Class of 1956 and Class of 1966 participated in 60th reunion and 50th reunion weekend at the College on Friday, June 24 and Saturday, June 25. The weekend began with a reception at The Inn at Wise where old classmates quickly became reacquainted. The weekend continued Saturday morning with a brunch held at the Smith Dining Commons followed by the honoring of our veteran alumni. The day transitioned into a tour of Crockett Hall, the place they remember the most and some called home when they were students. Several alumni had not been on campus in years or since leaving school. They were surprised by the amazing changes and improvements done to the building. Tours of the campus as well as the new six floor library that opened in August were also a highlight. The alumni were astounded by how much it has changed in the last years and by the growth of the college. They finished the weekend at the Inn at Wise with a historic, memorable and fantastic dinner, and they shared their fondest memories of their time on campus. Chancellor Donna P. Henry and Alumni Board officials Sheila Cox Combs and Cathy Sandidge presented the Class of 1956 with their 60th ornaments and the Class of 1966 with their 50th medallions.

Sheila Cox Combs earned a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics with a certification to teach from Clinch Valley College in May, 1972. During her time at the College, she worked in the work study program as an assistant in the mathematics department where she graded papers, conducted study groups and filled in when an instructor needed her. She was a charter member of Sigma Zeta honor society and the first recipient of the Theo Gibson math award. Sheila began her professional career as a high school teacher at John Battle High School in Washington County, Virginia. Within a year, Sheila was offered a National Science Foundation fellowship to pursue a Master’s Degree in Education at Radford University while teaching. She completed the MS in Education with concentrations in mathematics (statistics) and counseling and was hired to work with the Student Support Services unit at Clinch Valley College in the spring of 1975. From there Sheila moved to director of financial aid in 1978. She continued teaching in the math department when possible but the majority of her time was consumed in directing student aid programs and veterans’ support programs. For the next 14 years, Sheila became an active member of VASFAA, SASFAA and NASFAA, the Virginia, Southern and National Associations of Financial Aid

and Admissions professionals. She held various offices in these associations. Her hard work, dedication and professionalism earned her a $1000 contribution to a scholarship of her choice. She chose the Alumni Miner’s Family Scholarship as a way to honor her father, James Cox, a lifelong coal miner from Southwest Virginia. From 1987 to 1995, Sheila was enrolled at Virginia Tech where she completed 26 graduate hours in higher education and math. During this time she continued as financial aid director and became active in the SACS accreditation process. In 1992, she married Michael Combs from Red Fox, Kentucky. She and Mike will celebrate their 25th anniversary during her year as Alumni President. Also during 1992, she was actively involved with the Pound Lions Club where she was elected the first woman president. The club’s national magazine did an article on her as a successful woman in a male-dominated organization. After 14 years she left the financial aid office to become registrar of the College. Here she started the automation of registration processes to improve access to student and faculty academic records. Her quest for excellence resulted in many improvements in computerized academic records and reporting. Throughout her career in the Registrar’s Office she taught classes, helped start the ROTC program, was actively involved in student athletic eligibility and supervised the Information Technology unit. By 1999, she had added assistant dean to her duties. From 1992 to 2010, Sheila was a contract grant reader for the U.S. Department of Education. This work involved reading proposals from educational institutions from the entire U.S., grading the application against the requirements for the grant, and final determination of the level of funding. After retiring from UVa-Wise in 2010, Sheila was employed as a grant manager for the Health Wagon. During her time at Clinch Valley College, Sheila commuted two years, lived in McCraray Hall one year and in

an apartment in Wise one year. She was a member of SNEA, Student National Education Association, attended school functions and supported many organizations. She states that the best memories of campus life revolved around the Jefferson Lounge. Sheila has remained active in the life of the College since retirement through her involvement in the UVaWise Alumni Association and the Twin Leaf Society. She has served on the Alumni Board of Directors for many years where she sits on several committees. She is currently an officer in the Twin Leaf Society. Sheila will focus her time as the alumni association president to aid, strengthen, and expand the alumni’s involvement with the growth of UVa-Wise. “After spending over half my life at the college I am dedicated to making sure others have the same opportunity,” she said. Sheila lives in Pound, Virginia with her husband. They have enjoyed traveling on their Honda Gold Wing trike until last year when health complications curtailed their riding. Sheila enjoys cooking, gardening, working in the Combs’ wood shop and she volunteers at the Raven Rock Dialysis Center. She and Mike recently became new grandparents when their daughter Nicole gave birth to Connor Michael Combs on September 9.
